The entire OPERATION MINDCRIME album is a freaking classic. I was lucky enough to see them perform the entire album from start to finish during the Empire tour. Easily the best live concert I’ve seen in person.
100% I just watched the entire Operation Livecrime concert again after looking at several of these reaction videos. Such an epic album and am grateful that I got to see it live in its entirety back in 91.
I put it up there with "the Wall" but from a Metal side of things. I listened to Operation Mindcrime on repeat for the better part of a year and go back to it all the time.
The whole album is like a rock opera, kind of like Pink Floyd in that you need to listen to the entire album. Geoff Tate's voice is insane. Great reaction by the way.
Presuming you mean "kind of like Pink Floyd" in the sense that their music and ambitions during this time were a pale, hair-metal rehash of Pink Floyd's worst period _(The Wall,)_ where Waters killed the creative energy of the band with his navel-gazing and control issues . . .
Queensryche's "Operation Mindcrime" is one of my favorite albums. This album was especially important during my active duty military years when I was deployed. The human condition is not designed to be faced with war regularly. Queensryche helped me deal with and overcome some of the most difficult times in my military career and life and has also influenced me as a musician. Geoff Tate is the best. Keep on rockin' in a free world. Cheers!
Always loved Queesnryche and particularly Mindcrime... and oh man... this particular song hit so much harder when I came back from Iraq and Afghanistan. First time I listened to it post-depolyment it was a gut punch. Still is some days.
Operation mindcrime is probably my favourite album of all time. A true concept album that tells a page turner of a story through some absolute bangers.
Together with W.A.S.P.'s The Crimson Idol. I have seen Blackie performing this album completely twice, but unfortunately I have never seen Queensrÿche performing Operation Mindcrime totally.
From one reactor to another, do NOT miss out on Queensryches live in Tokyo song Take Hold of the Flame. It's a vocal clinic. Geoff Tate is the greatest progressive rock/metal vocalist in history and its not even debatable. Chris DeGarmo guitar solos are the best as well. They always fit the song perfect without being over the top shredding. To really appreciate their ability to draw emotion out of the audience check out Roads to Madness as well. That song still gives me goosebumps 35 years later. Keep up the great work!
All us Queensryche fans who know this song so well was just waiting for your reaction when that chorus kicked in. Best listened to with headphones, eyes closed, and in a relaxed state if you ask me.
Eddie Jackson on bass was one of my biggest influences. He was so great at being in sync with the drums. Saw them open for Metallica's Justice for All tour in support of this album Operation Mindcrime. One of the best concerts I ever went to...the entire album is classic!
Me too! I just watched a woman listen to Eyes Of a stranger for the first time, The look of surprised joy as the song kicked up. She's a life long fan now for sure! The sheer joy listening to Queensryche reminded me of my first time...Someone Else. Love all albums except Hear in the now whatever. That 1 sucks!!!
4:30 "...I have always known that the mirror never lies"! We all face the truth, or the truth faces us, one way or another; whether we choose to accept it, or not. Great song writing!
Also, from Unplugged, "The Killing Words". Geoff sings the verse right after the guitar solo a little differently from the studio version. It's really killer!
I saw these guys live in Tulsa a few years back.... Well ok 10yrs or more ago. LoL I also saw them years ago when I was in High School (late 80s). They still sound incredible after all these years
So glad you finally discovered the mighty Queensrÿche (and yes, you pronounced it correctly) ;-) The song you listened to today is from their concept album 'Operation Mindcrime' and it is considered one of the best concept albums ever produced. The song 'Eyes of a Stranger' is part of a story-line and if you get a chance, listen to the whole album, it's amazing! As you noticed, Geoff Tates vocals are impeccable and if you want to hear him perform live, I would highly recommend the video 'Take Hold Of The Flame - Live in Tokyo' ....his vocal range will blow you away!
Aileen, as is most genuine, your commentary is a joy! Queensryche has it all from ballad-type to hard-driving, well composed material with one of the best vocalists in Rock history. I saw them during their Mind Crimes tour with Type O Negative opening up for them - a band I knew nothing about at that time, but certainly became a fan thereafter! That's a group you should also review, whose lead singer plays the bass(right up your alley..) and has one of the deepest voices youll ever hear. RIP Peter Steele. Thanks Aileen.
Not really. He sounds kinda tired and flops in some instances. The studio version is way way better, sadly there aren't live versions from the late 80's.
Queensryche "Take Hold of the Flame" live in Tokyo is a staple for reaction channels, especially vocal teachers, as Geoff puts on a clinic in that performance.
Great reaction. His voice is pure power and control. Try “I don’t believe in love” and “Breaking the Silence” from the same album, epic songs. This will become one of your favourite metal albums of all time. The complexity (at the time, anyway) mixed with accessibility, the coolness of the riffs, the power and punch of the songs, Geoff’s voice, and the concept story throughout makes for a great experience.
It wouldn't be the worst idea to watch a live video instead of the music videos. They were so great at the time there was barely any difference between studio and live and they used the big screen to project the video parts of the story. It really was a remarkable achievement. There's nothing like it in music.
Mindcrime is the definitive Queensryche album. This was Tate as his best as well. The whole band was at the top of their game here. This is also the greatest snare drum tone ever recorded. Scott Rockenfield's snare sounded like a gunshot.
Operation Mindcrime is a concept album that tells a story from start to finish. It is definitely worth your time to listen to the entire album in one sitting. Plus there is not a single song on the album that doesn't kick ass. 🤘 Also, the Rage For Order album is another ass kicker. 👍
For all you young bucks out there, those of us who grew up listening to Geoff and his contemporaries were just as stunned and blown away the first time we heard this as you are. Timeless music
If you really like Tate’s voice. do a reaction to “Take Hold of the Flame” live in Tokyo it will blow your mind. And if you want to get there early stuff “queen of the Reich” amazing song.

the look of shock on your face was priceless, Geoff was incredible on this album. never get sick of listening to this, you really have to listen to the entire album to appreciate the brilliance of Operation Mindcrime

So the thing I get out of this than other just a killer song. This lady was smiling and bopping through the whole thing. Thats a killer song no matter how you slice it!
I saw them 6 times, 4 times with the original lineup, from their first USA tour they were fire! Geoff Tate, a top 10 male vocalist in all of rock, from Elvis to Eddie Vedder, he belongs.
This song always hits me in the feels - I can remember where I was when I bought this CD and sat listening to it for the first time, totally loving each ebb and flow of the story. I love it even more now because 30 + yrs later and the album's message and ideas are even more relevant then when it initially came out !!! YOU MUST do a full album review Aileen.... it is a must !!! This band makes us proud up here in the PNW .... bravo Bellevue boys !!!
I’m not intentionally trying to create a dispute here, but I don’t like how Queensryche gets thrown into the mix of “hair” bands. I know they are sort of worked into that circuit commercially, and yeah Geoff Tate _visually_ had that sort of thing going on during this point of their career, but musically, they are leagues ahead of what hair bands are. What people think of as hair bands are more along the lines of Glam Metal and you could probably use both of those terms interchangeably. But the product you get with Queensryche is not the same product you get with Glam Metal and hair bands and all that. From the subject matter of the songs to the music itself. Everybody knows they categorized more as Prog Metal. And some of their early stuff you could arguably say they had a little bit of a Power Metal thing going on as well. And I’m saying this last because it’s just more of an observation than an actual point, but bringing back to what I said about them, Geoff especially, visually having a sort of hair band look going on; I think it’s ironic that them having made a beautiful ballad like Silent Lucidity is the type of thing that gets them grouped with hair bands, even though by that point, any visual resemblances to hair bands was already gone.
@@chucky9901 yeah but the context of it is in response with listening to and enjoying a Queensryche song. I mean you’re not gonna see someone enjoy a Queensryche song and then say something like “gotta respect someone who loves 1930’s Swing music” or something like that.
"Take Hold Of The Flame - Live in Tokyo '84" is a must see !! @AileenSenpai - one of the best live performances of all time I would say. There you can hear and see what Geoff Tate was able to do. Unbelievable good.
In 1983 I saw this unknown band, Queensryche, open for Twisted Sister at The Ritz in NYC, they were absolutely flawless. Geoff Tate at this era was like another Rob Halford. Brilliant.
If you like the power in those vocals, try out: QUEENSRYCHE, TAKE HOLD OF THE FLAME. It has an amazing vocal range and HUGE power.... It will blow you out of your seat!
One of THOSE albums. If you're of a certain age and a metalhead, there's almost no chance this won't be in your top 10. A band at the very peak of their powers, and live it was next level. Such great memories.
@@olivergambrell9763 you clearly moved in very different circles to me then. They were rapidly becoming huge with this album. Myself and all my metal friends were heavily into them.
@@olivergambrell9763 so am I in the UK. We had Kerrang! , Metal Hammer and a really strong social scene. Radio was limited to Tommy Vance on Friday and Fluff Freeman on Saturday.
I got to see them 3 times live in their hay day and met Geoff after the Operation Mindcrime show. He was smoking and had a cold and STILL put on a flawless performance!
@@scottallen6664 I hear you. Mike Starr and Mike Inez from alice in chains also played an ns4. I've owned a number of spectors myself. Currently have a euro 5 string in my arsenal of basses. Love it. I rarely play a 4 string anymore but wish i still had one of my older 4 string spectors.
Watched them live in the early 90s and I was floored at how tight they sounded and his vocals were freaking amazing! I could listen to him sing the phone book!
I jumped at the chance to see Geoff Tate when he was doing anniversary tours for Operation: Mindcrime and Rage for Order/Empire where he performed the albums in entirety. He still sounds amazing today.
What I love about true artists is that you can’t fit them into one clear box. I love when people discover that the same group that brought you Into the Eyes of a Stranger also can switch it up entirely and level you with Silent Lucidity. That’s the power and palette of an incredible artist such as Queensryche and the vocal performance of Geoff Tate in particular! Enjoy!
The album as a whole is superb. I am a sucker for Suite sister Mary. The part with the female vocals... The live version is a piece of theatre as well. Highly recommended.
The one phrase that I used say about a band like Queensrÿche, would be “controlled chaos”. Is powerful enough to destroy the world, but it’s so smooth and well tempered at the same exact time.
Saw them for the first time in 1983 with Quiet Riot, Saxon and Axe as the opening act I was blown away and went out the next day to buy their EP. Geoff state was one of the only singers who could sing the recorded tracks 100% in concert. Damn I’m old.
First time I ever heard them is when I saw them open for Metallica on the Justice tour. This was the album they were on tour for and they sound just as great live.
Geoff Tate is easily one of the greatest vocalists in rock history. Make sure to take a look at Take Hold Of The Flame - Live in Tokyo,
Him pulling of that song on that concert gets me every time

And I’m saying this last because it’s just more of an observation than an actual point, but bringing back to what I said about them, Geoff especially, visually having a sort of hair band look going on; I think it’s ironic that them having made a beautiful ballad like Silent Lucidity is the type of thing that gets them grouped with hair bands, even though by that point, any visual resemblances to hair bands was already gone.
@@PotawatomiThunderNew It was a generalization about her musical taste..... Not about this particular band lulz :p Rock On !!!
@@chucky9901 yeah but the context of it is in response with listening to and enjoying a Queensryche song. I mean you’re not gonna see someone enjoy a Queensryche song and then say something like “gotta respect someone who loves 1930’s Swing music” or something like that.
Absolutely one of the greatest singers of all time!
"Take Hold Of The Flame - Live in Tokyo '84" is a must see !! @AileenSenpai - one of the best live performances of all time I would say. There you can hear and see what Geoff Tate was able to do. Unbelievable good.
One of their best, in my opinion
Saw them open for Metallica in 88, then again as headliner in 91. Best sound quality of any large venue show I've ever seen.
same here!
"what a fucking voice!" Love that comment
Yes!! Please do more Queensryche!! Operation Mindcrime is one of they're greatest albums!
In 1983 I saw this unknown band, Queensryche, open for Twisted Sister at The Ritz in NYC, they were absolutely flawless. Geoff Tate at this era was like another Rob Halford. Brilliant.
Very underrated band......damn we had some good music in the 80's and 90's.
Queensryche live in Tokyo. Take hold of the flame. 🔥🤘😝🤘
Silent Lucidity live at MTV awards. Geoffs voice is amazing ❤
I was at school in this era and no-one was into them. There were loads of metalheads in my year. This is the first song of theirs I've heard.
@@olivergambrell9763 you clearly moved in very different circles to me then. They were rapidly becoming huge with this album. Myself and all my metal friends were heavily into them.
@@dmanton300 I'm in the uk. We didn't have rock radio stations so hearing new stuff was more difficult.
Oh please please please go down the operation mindcrime rabbit hole! The entire concept album is something to experience!
"That bass". 1990's Spector ns-4 with emg pickups and a hazlab preamp. That tone is unmistakable.
Eddie Jackson was the reason I bought and still have a Spector NS4 bass. I love his tone. Especially on Operation Mindcrime and Empire albums.

I hear you.
So happy to see your review of one of my favorite bands. TY so much.
Can relate to this song ❤
Your reaction is SO authentic, whereby your facial expressions say it all. Subbed.
Geoff was just as impressive in concert. LONG BEFORE backing tracks…. They had to bring the goods. Glad I was there.
Truly recommend Take Hold of the Flame - live in Tokyo. It's an amazing performance.
Enjoy!
One of the best reactions to Queensryche and Geoff Tate I've seen. The pure joy on your face while listening was awesome!
The only man that can bring tears to my eyes. Good stuff, makes me feel 16 again.
The album as a whole is superb. I am a sucker for Suite sister Mary. The part with the female vocals... The live version is a piece of theatre as well. Highly recommended.
The female always gives me cold chills on that song
More Queensryche 😊!!!
If you thought this song was great, listen to the whole album... it's soulful and driven. One of THE best albums ever produced
Guys........we made it to our 50's! Good work brothers, i knew you could do it.
Take hold of the flame live in Tokyo will blow your mind if you really want to see how much range Geoff Tate has
The one phrase that I used say about a band like Queensrÿche, would be “controlled chaos”.
You have got to listen to queensryche live in 84 "Take hold of the flame" it's an amazing live performance like none other...
I saw this band twice when Geoff was in the group and damn he’s good live. Gives me chills.
First time I ever heard them is when I saw them open for Metallica on the Justice tour. This was the album they were on tour for and they sound just as great live.
