He did not destroy his voice, whoever said that doesnt know what they are talking about. Hes still touring an sounds great. He did however, stop sounding so good for a while, but Id be willing to bet it was on purpose since it was right around the time he had all that drama with the band and then left. Their breakup was like a bad toxic divorce.
I dont know who made the comment that he destroyed his voice....smh, absolutely not true. Eyes of a Stranger came out in '88. The man is older now and doesn't sing in that register anymore. But if you watch some of his latest live videos you'll see that he can still belt. Maybe half a step lower but still powerful 🙂
Exactly! I talked about this during the livestream! At a certain age, any voice, including professionally trained classical singers can start to lose facility in their voices.
His voice isn't destroyed. He had vocal training at a young age and he just laid off some off the exercising into his 60's now. He has been actually sounding pretty good this year.
This is the first song of theirs I heard then saw Operation: Mindcrime and Empire tours, then the 20th anniversary of mindcrime then Geoff solo this year. He's still phenomenal
There's some misinformation about Geoff Tate. He was a smoker but gave it up years ago. His voice did deteriorate in the late 1990s/early 2000s but he has recovered most of his voice in recent years. Yes, he's in his 60s and can't quite hit the higher notes the way he did in his 20s and 30s, but he still sounds amazing live. The man has a great natural voice and excellent technique. By comparison, the man who replaced him in what remains of Queensryche can hit the high notes but doesn't sound nearly as good at anything else.
Actually, Geoff was dropping the highest note on the "all" syllable of the line "No happy ending like they've always promised" by the time I saw the band live during the "Building Empires" tour in 19990. However, he does hit a high Gb5 preety full on during the encore performance of "Walk in the Shadows" on the DVD "Mindcrime at the Moore" which I'm sure is a lot higher and at least a decade later! Todd la Torre singing "Dilent Lucidity" is woeful!
He was classically trained and he didn't really destroy his voice because he still has chops today. Touring for decades eventually gets all the singers that's that powerful
And let's have a LOT of love for Eddie (bass) and Scott (drums), who are quite possibly one of the finest rhythm sections in music. The way they hold down this and so many other songs is phenomenal!
Eddie is also a fantastic singer. You can really hear him in Queensÿche's Live Evolution concert. The audio is much better than in Operation:Livecrime. I got to see Queensÿche 3 times. What a treat!
Yes. It’s hard to take any of the songs on this album out of context…it’s a concept album that tells a whole story, and still sounds amazing. Worst part for me is that they were never really the same after Chris DeGarmo left (the guitarist in the hat, in this particular video).
@@chrys0130 So glad parents are sharing this amazing, epic, f'ing rocking group with their progeny. My cells are made up of 10% QR. This album was on a loop. 🤘😠🤘💜

Another Queensryche song to check out is " Gonna get Close to you" off the Rage for Order, album.... His voice changes quite a bit in that one!!!! It was originally recorded by Canadian artist Lisa DalBello...👍👍👍
this entire album is awesome, literally a modern rock opera that tells a story, both in the lyrics, and in the sound clips between songs. The live version Operation Livecrime dvd/blue-ray is a must havefor any serious rock/prog rock lover.
Operation mind crime is one of the best concept albums ever. GT had voice issues in the past but he is back touring/singing and he sounds better than ever.
queensryche music is from washington state its progressive metal and the range that geoff tate has is unbelievable another fantastic heavy metal singer
His voice isn't destroyed. Ive seen him 2 times in the last 3 years. About to see him again soon. He still has his great voice. He sang for 3 hours last concert and kicked butt. Maybe some people are in need of hearing assistance? Geoff is opera trained so you should recognize it. He has a 4 and 1/2 octave voice. He is a true master of his instrument! Greatest rock voice ever! And he does announce his words extremely well. It was just voice inflection, selling us the story thats unfolding.
Really fun watching someone professionally trained react to Geoff. The whole Operation MindCrime was a concept album and the tour was incredibly theatrical. I think you might really like Suite Sister Mary for many rreasons.
This record and talent just isnt really seen or heard today.....the talent alone, the originality of writing these songs and with a deep story line in it....just awesome. I remember discovering this record in 88, I was blown away as a young teen. I dont hear anything to this caliber today in rock....not even close.
Thank you for very young persons analysis of song but most comments and what not are interesting too. That said please don't think too hard about this or compare it to 2024 as this was released 36 years ago and that's a long long time ago
Guy is in his 60s and still sings amazing!! Don’t listen to the haters! The only thing that changed is his tone a bit and his range a slight bit because he’s an old man now!
Geoff did not destroy his voice. He is still singing and has a great voice! He got older and the voice changes but you still see live performances and he is amazing!
I’ve heard him lately and he still sounds pretty darn good. He still does some Queensryche stuff but he tours under his own name Geoff Tate: you can look at some of his stuff from this year here on UA-cam. He definitely didn’t destroy his voice. It may not be what it was but it’s still good.
I saw him live in concert this spring and he sounded awesome. The only difference is, as he said in an interview, that he sings some of the classic songs in lower keys due to his age
Awesome! Thank you Chase, and Maggie! so glad you did more off this historical LP, and pray you do more of it, and continue the story from it. Seeing them perform this entire LP live is the BEST concert experience I have ever had, and trust me, I have been to hundreds of live shows in my 5 decades of concert going life. 🤘😎🤘
Thanks! I was glad to sponsor it, and I'm so glad you liked it. She was going to react to Eyes of a Stranger, and I was like, "Please do the Empty Room intro into it!! It really helps set the other song up." Luckily, she more than willing to do so! I threw in the backstory of what had happened in the album for context so she could grasp what was happening. She has since reacted to Suite Sister Mary on her Twitch Livestream. I think it will be uploaded here on UA-cam before too long. For what its worth... Maggie is very interested in reacting to the entire album, so that might be something that happens sometime in the near future.
@@chasestreet8082 That's fantastic! I have seen her other QR reactions when she did them. I suggested to do the entire LP, and she replied with a thanks for the idea. We shall see if it happens or not.
I got to see them in 92 which was their last Mindcrime tour at the time. I'm a huge Ryche fan for years now. Geoff was the best singer in metal in my opinion. He was great at adding in emotional detail. He did wear out his voice and tgen between smoking and time away he seemed to stuggle there for a bit, but I believe he's pretty much back now. He is in his 60s. Listen to Queen of the Ryche...you can understand how he wore down a bit after touring
He did not destroy his voice and still sings to this day.. Also, the diction you referred to is off base. He was always one of the cleanest vocals around. What you heard was bad audio of a concert. Having been to 6 of their concerts from 80's to 90's I can say they are still the one band that sounded so much like their albums it was crazy. Under rated and SO MUCH more that you need to listen to of theirs
Being a trained vocalist like yourself, you would truly appreciate the Queensryche catalog. You should listen to the album Rage for Order and the whole Operation Mindcrime album. Just to follow the EPIC story the whole way through. Thanks for listening to a band of my entire youth.
A lot is made (and rightfully so) of Geoff's vocals, but not near enough of his bandmates and their contributions. Every one of them is a master at their craft. Former guitarist Chris DeGarmo, in addition to being a monster guitarist, was also an incredible vocalist in his own right, singing the same notes as Geoff and often singing higher harmonies. Almost everybody in that band also sang backup in addition to their instruments. Great reaction as always.
Queesnsryche was a go to for me in the 80's and 90's and still enjoy today .. If you will check out the songs ' Anybody listening' and 'Someone Else' . Those two songs really show Geoff Tates more diverse vocal Skills ..
He did Eyes of a Stranger acoustic version a couple of years back (Geoff Tate "Eyes of a Stranger" Acoustic in San Antonio at The Eagle 106.7). it is worth a listen, I got to see him live in 2019 his range is not like in the early years but he knows how to use what he still has.
It funny that you are doing this reation today. This album debuted May 2nd in 1988. Walk in the shadows is one of my favorite songs. The man was unbelievable.
I saw Geoff last summer. His voice is still amazing. It isn't destroyed. My favorite band ever! Seen them 11 times and Geoff twice! His voice is second to none. Im enjoying your channel
I saw Queensryche twice. A tighter band you will never find. I used to work at the old Cleveland Coliseum. I've seen hundreds of shows. They crushed it.
At 11:55: no, he didn’t destroy his voice. He’s 63 now and can still belt out those notes like he’s ordering takeout. He’s done some work with a band called Sweet Oblivion which kinda proves he’s still got the chops.
Best concert I've ever seen. Should have done the Livecrime version of Eyes too... ending is extended with some great guitar work. I was at the Madison, WI show where most of the live footage was taken and can see me and my friends a few times under the boom camera that was swinging over the crowd on the floor.
Someone who is coming out of sedation doesn't have much diction .... it's slurred with blurry vision. Epic Album ... you can feel what the character is feeling.
he loved every minute he sang, I saw him live twice. Amazing,. And Chris De Garmo was a guitar and songwrighting gem, thank you Maggie for recognizing the guitar work
He didn't destroy his voice. People just don't want their heroes to age and evolve... Geoff still kicks major tale! These songs are labor intensive and he's still outsinging his replacement. The band lineup changed and he adjusted down to the lower vibrations that were left.... people don't understand how emotional singing can be when you're vibing within a nucleus as opposed to fighting the vibe.
Back again. If I post something too long, it won't post, so now to YOUR REACTION: I LOVE how you hear and point out little details about not just the singing, but other elements of the music and musicianship! It's very satisfying how enthusiastic you are too,! I hope you'll consider doing more Queensryche! "ROADS TO MADNESS" is an early song of their's that's rather epic too. It's about 10" long, and the very last line ( don't sneak ahead and listen to it out of sequence), but Geoff is the most EXPRESSIVE I've ever heard him on this song. Also the lyrical concept is intriguing. Think about the movie: "FLATLINERS". Another song that was done on MTV Unplugged 1992, which is stripped down acoustic is "THE KILLING WORDS." Geoff alters one line in his delivery from the studio version. Very powerful. He's a fearless singer. Which I guess you know something about! CONGRATULATIONS on your recent opera competition win!! You have a beautiful voice yourself!!
Mindcrime is one of the greatest albums Queensryche ever made, I know the combos were put on Mindcrime 2, I decided to listen to it tonight, it has to be at least a #2, thanks for the suggestion.
I love seeing professional singers, especially opera, react to this band. Especially this song. A side note on the “clean harmonization” on the guitars, mike Wilton and Chris DeGarmo were UNMATCHED on their ability. I’ll say this, mike stone, the guitarist currently playing in Chris’s place with mike Wilton is very VERY GOOD. This song live, especially on that part, freakin goosebumps 🤘🤘🤘
this is like pink floyd's the wall, hard to take one song out of the entire story line. All the songs are great including "I Don't Believe in Love" You need to listen to the entire album front to back to get the feeling to these songs.

Thank you so much! Hope to see you tonight?
Mindcrime is one of the greatest albums Queensryche ever made, I know the combos were put on Mindcrime 2, I decided to listen to it tonight, it has to be at least a #2, thanks for the suggestion.
Yes he is in his 60's he is still the goat but time waits for no one
I love seeing professional singers, especially opera, react to this band. Especially this song. A side note on the “clean harmonization” on the guitars, mike Wilton and Chris DeGarmo were UNMATCHED on their ability. I’ll say this, mike stone, the guitarist currently playing in Chris’s place with mike Wilton is very VERY GOOD. This song live, especially on that part, freakin goosebumps 🤘🤘🤘
Suite Sister Mary - from the same album. Epic!
Operation: Mindcrime is one of the greatest, if not THE greatest Rock Opera ever made.
this is like pink floyd's the wall, hard to take one song out of the entire story line. All the songs are great including "I Don't Believe in Love" You need to listen to the entire album front to back to get the feeling to these songs.
