Studio layering and mix techniques put a ton of pressure on him to perform live. The super high harmonies on the records were done by Brad also. Who in the band is going to that live? The guy is only human. Awesome job.
and isnt it amazing how this song gives you that feeling that this song itself is talking about! the number one thing i constantly am telling people i feel is missing from modern rock music is harmonizing.
Oh you lucky bastard lol 😁 I was pretty sad when Brad died too. I was in my last year of high school, and I realized I'd never get to see my favorite band perform live together (I mean as they were). It's crazy though, somehow it hits even harder now than it did at the time. RIP Brad 💐
For not being young anymore, Brad sounded really good. It's a shame more of the older concerts weren't like this; they did so many of them Brand's voice strained pretty badly. In this, you can tell his throat isn't exhausted.
Listen to the Long Beach shows from 1977, or any other shows from that year. He sounds pretty damn smooth in those shows, and he isn't usually going for parts that sound like they're out of his range.
people have said that Brad couldn't hit those high notes live than he could in the studio. Those guys need to shut up and listen at 2:33. Brad has pipes of gold, and he can hit those notes just as good as live as he can in the studio!
Very true. The many times he didn't when they played live was because they did a crazy amount of concerts and his voice wasn't getting any rest. This was very solid and is pure proof of what Brad was capable of.
So true. I saw Boston live just a couple of years before Brad passed. They were incredible and his vocals were fantastic. I now watch the music videos of Boston without Brad and they are nowhere near as good as the Boston I saw live.
He cant. its a combination of mixed register and falsetto. at 2:33 as well as the end high note he doesnt use pure head voice as he did in the studio version
on their first US tour, I met Brad and Tom on the second-to-last night. I spent about 2 hours with them, and Brad wasn't even tired, let alone hoarse. It was like he just got off work from the office. Yes, he could hit those notes live! But, like everyone else (including me) he hit notes in the studio on records that he would have to sing into middle age and beyond.... Cut the guy some slack, please.
CAUGHT A BOSTON SHOE IN THE WINTER OF 79'. SOME OF THEIR GEAR DIDN'T MAKE IT, BUT THEY PLAYED THE GIG AND THAT'S WHEN I KNEW THESE GUYS WERE REAL MUSICIANS. NOT LIKE THESE 2 CHORD,CAN'T SING BANDS OF TODAY............BOSTON LIVES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Saw the original tour live at the time in the UK, playing at Stafford bingley hall basically a big cattle shed. Saw the Eagles hotel California tour at the same place. Didn't know I was living at the very peak of "popular" music and bands would rarely if ever be as good again.
Is it my imagination, or was Boston's guitar sound just better than everyone else who came along? I am including the all-time great guitar bands and performers...you can name them. But there was just something about Boston's guitar sound that stood out from all the rest. It's like they combined hard core rock with an ethereal type of sound....like having a synthesizer within the guitar. I am no musical expert. All I know is that is sounded incredible and unique.
To anyone complaining of Brad's pitch or whatever - yes he is a little flat in spots. But this is before in-ear monitors and he's up against unbelievable sound pressures onstage which change your perception of pitch. Just being able to do it at all - falsetto at that volume/power - is super-human. Listen to how long he can hold a note at 4:40 - he had epic, super-human control of his voice. For a live rock show this is an amazing performance. R.I.P.
I use to listen to Boston growing up then years later I went with a friend to see this cover band called strawberryfields forever I believe but it was Brad singing Beatles tuens hit it perfect so amazing after got to meet him and hang out funny we didn't talk music like most do we talked TV shows and whats happin around these days and how gowing up was easier for us than at the time my son would have it as he was a little brat child oh that's right still is but lived in Franklin back then went into Boston for the night checked it out met Brad and we kept in touch well till his death which hit me kind of hard such a real guy and great musician
i've never heard of Boston before but i hear this on the radio from time to time and i love the chorus riff. and the penguins listen to this in Madagascar 2 while hijacking the safari trucks :D
Was at this Hamilton show in '88. Totally recall Tom wearing that leg brace at the time. The quality of this audio doesn't do it justice. The sound was phenomenal for this large venue (Copps Coliseum) 👍
Lol, if you look at 2017 videos, Tom Scholz, doesn't look sick of playing it, and neither does Jeff Neal (been in the band almost 1/2 decades, Curly Smith (in it on and off for 2 decades), or Gary Pihl (in it for 3 decades).
at last! a live recording of my all-time favourite band with good quality audio. Boston was the first live band that i saw some 32 years ago in Finsbury north London. Still love 'em.
I'm a big fan of all the great rock singers - Delp, Mercury, Bono, etc. And ALL of them can be a bit off from time to time. In the studio, they can re-record a flat note. In concert, you have to go with it and keep on going. All of these great singers adjust for how their voices are doing on a particular day. Delp is great here! Sadly, we've lost Delp and Mercury and U2's time is probably coming to an end soon. I don't hear any new artist with this great style or voice. Sigh...
Jesus Christ that high note is just insane. What a singer... one complaint: this song is a masterwork. They should fucking strutting the stage like the heroes they are, Strut god damn it!!
I actually know Fran Cosmo personally me and my dad want to do some work for him back in 2007 cuz he lives right here and Utica New York outside of Deerfield New York because Fran Cosmo lives over on Woods road in Deerfield New York I was actually in his basement inside his recording studio
I'm not sure who the backing vocalist is here, but it sure doesn't look like it's the guy 2nd from right, who is pretending to be. Maybe i'm wrong and i hope i am, but @ 2:12 he is scrambling to get back to the mic stand, and almost makes it, but not quite. I just cant believe there wouldn't be a fade in as he was nearly a foot away from the mic when he was supposed to come in. Perhaps he has an incredibly loud voice and was able to project it for one and a half words before adjusting down as he reached the stand.
I love Boston R.I.P Brad but everything about Brad's voice was true until the famous 3-stage belt.,the multitracking in the studio kinda fucked it for Brad's live performance he just couldn't hit that note live.. The experts are figuring this out and now Brad's sadly not the extreme talent we thought. There is an 80's live version where he nailed it pretty good but I'M having a hard time finding it.He's still an awesome singer I just think he shoulda prepared himself a little better 4 their live shows.
im cosanostra so i dont give a fuck if they get in my way i just call a couple of cousins of mine and problem solved. (if you dont know what cosanostra are then you dont know anything about gangs)
For you to write that indicates you have no clue about music at all. Now, you may not like all of Bono's activism (although you should as he's helping 3rd World Nations more than any government ever did), but he is a great singer/songwriter. I love Boston, but to dismiss U2 is utter stupidity. Everything you ever write about music from here on out can be discounted.
most underrated singer in rock history
R.I.P.
Delp's voice was just incredible. Very few have that gift. Burton Cummings, Paul Rodgers, Steven Perry, Freddy Mercury come to mind.
Add Glen Burton to that list as well
A guitar model?
Brad god love him, isnt in the same league as any of those singers sorry .i mean look up his vocal range
Roxxane D'troyt Brad is in the league of Axl Rose
The lead singer of Skid Row also
Whether you're old or younger you cannot this classic. They don't make up this memorable anymore. Brad, you had a great an amazing voice
Top 10 rock songs of all time. Amazing.
Brad Delp had an incredible voice. I loved hearing this live, with the vocals and guitars with no "treatment". They were just this great!
Studio layering and mix techniques put a ton of pressure on him to perform live. The super high harmonies on the records were done by Brad also. Who in the band is going to that live? The guy is only human. Awesome job.
Brads voice was absolutely amazing here, the range he gets to in that song is staggering for a bloke!
and isnt it amazing how this song gives you that feeling that this song itself is talking about!
the number one thing i constantly am telling people i feel is missing from modern rock music is harmonizing.
I was at that show! I remember how sad I was when I heard Brad Delp had died, and was glad that I got the chance to hear him sing that classic live
Oh you lucky bastard lol 😁
I was pretty sad when Brad died too. I was in my last year of high school, and I realized I'd never get to see my favorite band perform live together (I mean as they were). It's crazy though, somehow it hits even harder now than it did at the time.
RIP Brad 💐
Absolutely awesome singer. Boston will live on forever
Brad Delp was a lonely soul. But at least he had one... Legendary performance!
RIP Brad. He really was unique.
This song makes me feel good and gives me chills. I feel like i'm on top of the world
35 Years ago tonight I saw this tour in Edmonton.. RIP Brad.😢
Brad Died BOSTON died. He was so Great, what a voice and band back then. Sad ending.
Goosebumps every time I hear this song. Every single time. Amazing.
I was at this show - thanks for posting - RIP Brad Delp
people have said that Brad couldn't hit those high notes live than he could in the studio. Those guys need to shut up and listen at 2:33. Brad has pipes of gold, and he can hit those notes just as good as live as he can in the studio!
+Delta 38 You are right!
the highest notes come at the end of the song and he cant sing that, only in the record
Very true. The many times he didn't when they played live was because they did a crazy amount of concerts and his voice wasn't getting any rest. This was very solid and is pure proof of what Brad was capable of.

IF I WAS STUCK ON AN ISLAND WITH ONLY 1 CD,IT WOULD BE THIS CD. BOSTON. THE BEST BAND EVER.THIS IS MY FAVORITE OF ALL TIME FOR ME.
on their first US tour, I met Brad and Tom on the second-to-last night. I spent about 2 hours with them, and Brad wasn't even tired, let alone hoarse. This is history. Timeless. A masterpiece. Incredible in every way.
Pure, real, clean sound.
his voice sounds great when he holds the last note for a long time.
Saw the original tour live at the time in the UK, playing at Stafford bingley hall basically a big cattle shed. Saw the Eagles hotel California tour at the same place. Didn't know I was living at the very peak of "popular" music and bands would rarely if ever be as good again.
Wow...simply incredible!!!! I wish I could have seen Boston in their day.....none of the music now even comes close!!!! Truly amazing!!!!!
Watching and hearing this video, I'm extremely grateful that I was able to see Boston live twice in the 1980's.
I was on my way to Hamilton, ON in a snowstorm the first time I heard this song in 1976.
Is it my imagination, or was Boston's guitar sound just better than everyone else who came along? I am including the all-time great guitar bands and performers...you can name them. But there was just something about Boston's guitar sound that stood out from all the rest. Def Leppard took this sound to make the Hysteria album.

Boston is very underrated my opinion brad delp top5 singer of all time
Love the jam session in this video! Best band there ever was. Sure do miss Brad Delp.
that's the brad we all know and love
Incredible in concert...and that was 1982!! Buffalo...RIP Brad...
I saw them on this Tour in Dallas,Texas and they were "Superb". Great stuff ,Thanks.
Such a stellar performance. It makes your jaw drop.
That sound!! Wow!!
A special band, one of the best ever.
Thank you thank you thank you!! Brad was the best.
ALL RIGHT!!! That's the way you do the solo!!!
My throat would tear itself out and die if I tried to do that.
Was at this Hamilton show in '88. Totally recall Tom wearing that leg brace at the time. The quality of this audio doesn't do it justice. The sound was phenomenal for this large venue (Copps Coliseum) 👍
Thanks so much for sharing this. Makes me feel young again!
What an amazing voice ...
his voice is fucking powerful.
One of the all-time great pop-rock songs, but I can't even imagine how sick they were of playing it by '88, let alone now.
joynthis you are an idiot if you call this pop it's classic rock to me
Lol, if you look at 2017 videos, Tom Scholz, doesn't look sick of playing it, and neither does Jeff Neal (been in the band almost 1/2 decades, Curly Smith (in it on and off for 2 decades), or Gary Pihl (in it for 3 decades).
GREAT MINDS THINK ALIKE. sure wish they would make some more music. i sure miss them alot. there was nobody better imo.
Apparently back in 1988 they hadn't yet discovered that you shouldn't cover the camera lense in a bucket of vasoline
Great song
Woaooohhhh what a voice!!!
awesome band in playing in my hometown
havent been in hamilton for almost 4 years i moved to BC
Great song!
at last! a live recording of my all-time favourite band with good quality audio. Boston was the first live band that i saw some 32 years ago in Finsbury north London. Still love 'em.
Couldn't agree with you more!
Who is the bass player doing the backing vocals! Sounds great!
David Sikes. ...he played with them for years. Great singer and bassist :-)
Rod Reagan agreed... the backing sounded like the record, even more than Brad... and I thought he kicked arse.
@@JulesFox Indeed. He sounds great here. So much better than he does in recordings from the previous year.
wow in my home town
Amen.

As I've heard since I was young they were never that good in concert but sounded good in there records. A great song thou, maybe one of the best...
Awesome
It's not your imagination. It's Tom Sholtz. Super electronics.
Well said sir
Holy shit I live in Hamilton!
デルプさん素晴らしい以外言葉無い。何故早く亡くってしまった…😭😭😭
I actually know Fran Cosmo personally me and my dad want to do some work for him back in 2007 cuz he lives right here and Utica New York outside of Deerfield New York because Fran Cosmo lives over on Woods road in Deerfield New York I was actually in his basement inside his recording studio
True dat
Come to San Juan PR, please
amazing range at 2:40
Man, it sucks he couldn't hit that one note @ 3:50, but still....God.
why are there no live Boston cds released?
Nombre de la melodía que inicia casi a los 5 minutos Por favor
@docrw They were great live:)
11 people must check her hearing again
@Macebeard risking to sound, kind of like i know what im talking about,... I agree
Lucky bastard.
Did the drummer throw one of his drumsticks?
this alway happens when you are at concert
is he playing a jackson?????
I'm not sure who the backing vocalist is here, but it sure doesn't look like it's the guy 2nd from right, who is pretending to be. It has to be him no one else was near a mic
@@Cook9698 Doug Huffman, the drummer, had a mic and was also regularly singing.
He was singing the low part probably, which does fade in, while Doug Huffman, the drummer, was singing the louder high part. Just a guess.
saw them in 76 this was ok
Brad is awesome but the guitar msn s so too
Men who stare at goats
How the hell does he do..........any of it. Haha!
I love Boston R.I.P Brad but everything about Brad's voice was true until the famous 3-stage belt.,the multitracking in the studio kinda fucked it for Brad's live performance he just couldn't hit that note live.. @Nigelxman1
Why can't he think of Boston as the best band there ever was?
You don't have to agree with him, but no need for replys like that either.
How can you have a person killed when you can't even spell? lol
Not quite the same as the album
im cosanostra so i dont give a fuck if they get in my way i just call a couple of cousins of mine and problem solved. (if you dont know what cosanostra are then you dont know anything about gangs)

@rostrom7
no
no one cares for them anymore
