This story sounds so familiar to me, it happened to my family in 2012. My mom, my sister and her 3 year old son (at the time). I was at my matriculates farewell (prom)when it all happened.
I've met white South Africans who say things have happened to their families but don't go into the details. Thank you and your mom so much for sharing--more from you and your dad soon. Your mom did all the right things.
Yes, I heard a dreadful story which I won't repeat the details because they are too graphic. But I met an older couple who fled South Africa and moved to New Zealand, who were raising their Grandchildren after their daughter and her husband were murdered.
My brothers substitute teacher in middle school lived in Africa for a time, can't remember for what. Might have been some sort of Christian thing, ya know. Anyway, she told a story once where she was at her home there and she saw some locals chase a guy down and wail on him with a machete until he died, then they picked the killer up on their shoulders in a group and paraded him around cheering. She left shortly after. I don't get it. I've seen a lot of videos of these sorts of things, it's how I found out about necklacing, the practice of putting a tire around someones neck and setting it on fire so it melts around them. I never would have imagined such a heinous death sentence.

My father ‘s uncle died protecting his family on their property in South Africa in the last century. My grandmother cried about this well into her last years. Glad your family survived.

I've also had a similar experience in South Africa down to the "now I'm going to kill you white bitch" comment. The whole thing lasted 6 and a half hours of being tied up with attempted rape. They lost all the papers for rape and attempted murder when it went to trial 4 years later. Thanks for sharing this story. You are not alone.
Thanks for sharing. I am a South African living in Durban. People don’t really understand the realities of life in SA. It remains a beautiful country but with huge personal safety issues. And the unrest of a few weeks ago was bizarre and surreal - I felt like I was in a movie.

As a fellow South African, and a woman, I thank you and the members of your communities, who stood up to protect the lives of innocent people, even when the state commanded that you return to your homes, allowing for further attacks. You are the fathers, brothers and men who not only protect us but also teach us to protect ourselves and to stand up for others who can't. Doing what is right, no matter how the media and the rest of the world tries to portray it. So incredibly proud that we have such amazing and strong men and women.

As much as I disagree with apartheid people actually never asked why they wanted such a system in the first place and then created Bantustans which were literally sovereign states for Black peoples, they weren't trying to keep their own people in like Socialists, they were trying to keep others out.
While I disapprove of African people wanting "Black free areas" they could have had a mostly African country with a Black minority if they had strict immigration laws.
Wow you’re mum is so amazingly brave! I worked with a (white) guy from SA who left for the UK to escape the violence just as you’re mum described. His experience of a car jacking situation was the final straw that made him give up and start a new life elsewhere.
Hope he didn't settle in London.
Almost every South African I've met (in New Zealand) came here because their farm got burnt down, had a member of their family shot or had their things stolen.

I am South African still living in SA. This story is not only true, but common place in SA. We've just got use to it. My own son's have experienced being attacked & robbed as well as near high jacking. My cousin, who was like a brother to me, was shot outside a shopping center for a few bucks. The stories go on.... I live in Australia and many of my best mates are Saffa’s. Lots of Saffas in Western Australia. I had the opportunity to go to Cape Town in 2014. Absolutely stunning country, but it’s clear to see why people leave.
I was offered a job in SA in 2000. I turned it down because the BMW station chief was murdered when they stole his car. Also, moving to a country where they build the security wall before they start building the house didn't sound appealing.
They have to build the security walls before the house or the bricks and building supplies vanish the day they are delivered

This is horrendous, I'm really sorry for what your parents especially what your Mum and Wendy went through. I've heard of lots of experiences like this happening in South Africa. I went to South Africa about 15 years ago on holiday and I had my bank card skimmed at a cash machine in a shopping centre and had thousands of £ stolen from my account. It was heartbreaking as I didn't earn much in my job and it was money I'd worked to save by working lots of overtime.

This was the most disturbing part of the video to me. Its one thing if a stranger would attempt to steal, rape and murder. But to have someone you know do that to your family? That is a whole new level of despicable.

You were strong in such a horrific situation! I remember the days when burglar bars hardly existed. Sleeping with open windows. Now every house have burglar bars, palisades, beams, security companies. When selling your property now it's a good feature!!

@@artygunnar Going to describe it as best as I can. It's electric/eletronic devices you mount to the fence or, like my brother did, against his house walls. These devices 'communicate' with each. If anything 'break' the communication of the devices the alarm would go off after a few seconds but it goes on immediately at the security company, giving them a few seconds quicker to get to your premises. If the intruders are still there it may cause a 'battle' but the intruders usually gets arrested. Usually the intruders will run away when your alarm goes off. It's a LOUD noise, waking everyone in your street.
@@gregb6469 Yes. Sometimes the young couples will settle in a flat (I think it's called an apartment in the US. When children are being born, more space is needed. Then the couple will start looking at houses - freestanding building in usually big garden - for the children to play. Townhouses are also popular. One entrance for couple of 'houses' Depending on area the houses and gardens are bigger and it can be very costly. The majority of our population stay in townships in very, very small houses. Or in squatter camps where the building material may be from corrugated sheets or tarpaulins or plastic (even road signs).

Brave lady your mum! I’m from the UK and growing up in the 80s we had a very simplistic viewpoint of what was happening in SA shaped by the media in particular. My house was burgled when I was 7 and I still have bad dreams about it, and I never even saw the robbers. It was that sense of violation alone that traumatized me. Your mom is incredible for living through that ordeal, and a great storyteller.
As a kid of about 5, someone stole my he-man collection from my parents car in the parking lot of a KC Royals game...way deep down that was traumatic to me for years. Also, what adult breaks into cars to steal kids stuff like that?

As someone who has been robbed and assaulted, I share that loss of innocence. Though not nearly as traumatic as what your mother went through.
I just spent $15000 buying security screens, gates, shutters, and guns just to never go through something like this again. My preoccupation with my home security is something that a lot of innocent people find unsettling, but I tell you what - I sleep well now. Some people are evil.

Where are you from? Just curious. I don't even lock my doors nowadays, but I do have some wifi cameras just for fun, and even that is seen as weird by my neighbors. I totally get that you would invest in security after having an terrible experience of course.
@@julius43461 I'm in Vegas, but was robbed walking on the street in Reno five years ago. You don't sleep well at night after these sorts of things occur.
Making my house a real pain in the ass to break into helps me sleep at night - you'll need power tools and to make a lot of noise.
As for walking alone on a street, I don't do that anymore unless it's a fairly safe area. I drive everywhere now.

@@Andytlp I wouldn’t go so far as to say it’s a fortress, just hard to break into. I could still be ambushed coming into or leaving the home. But it does definitely give me a solid control of my home having sensors on all doors and windows, plus having all the safety measures I’ve taken up.
If society goes mad max, being holed up in the middle of the desert with no supply lines is a bad idea. The home would be worthless. Probably best we get a grip on this global warming thing ASAP. It was 125f/50C at my home in June. The largest lake in the southwest, Lake Mead, is now looking feeble and pathetic. The biggest long term threat to my home over the next thirty years isn’t criminals, it’s the environment becoming uninhabitable and the supply disruptions from that causing massive instability.
@@SomeLazyDr Luckily, I haven’t been robbed or burgled so far. That’s why I’m taking these stories ever more so seriously than just as good advice. I don’t want to have my life involuntarily changed like that so drastically.
If you don’t mind my asking: How did the robbing envelop? Were you able to read some signs that something was about to go down? Or are you now able to do so?
What I find the most interesting is that many people who were robbed, never thought it could happen to them.
Also I’m convinced it’s wise to carry some sort of weapon on one’s person. Police in my country actually advise against that, speaking of false sense of security, failing to deescalate and so on - because according to them carrying a weapon makes one lose all care for their own safety. Funnily enough they instead recommend trusting your gut feeling to avoid getting in such situations in the first place.
I can relate to this i got hijacked near Sandton middle of the afternoon and at first they told me to f-off but they could not get the car started so they grab me and forced me to start the car and then put me in the back and drove me all the way to Soweto. The things that go through your mind i remember thinking that if i jump while the car is moving i might break a few bones but i got better chance of survival and i am not going to sit here and wait for them to shoot me, fortunately it did not come to that and i managed to talk them into letting me go - Glad i no longer live there anymore i dont miss looking over my shoulder every min of the day
When I was staying there, Sandton was considered a safe neighbourhood, in fact we (2 girls and 2 guys) happily walked around the area between our apartment and the bars and restaurants.
I used to go to the eat at the mall and watch a movie. Very sad

Even the largest and most hostile dog can be subdued without any tools or weapons.
You will most likely be badly injured in extremities but will survive if you learn how to take bad injuries like crushed hands while still keep fighting.
One huge dog can be subdued but 2dogs or one wolf is a loosing fight.
Give one hand to save yours throat is beneficial but giving both hands makes you dinner.
Survival 1.0.1 is to never surrender.

But that doesn't stop it from also being the kind of place where you can get hijacked or suffer a home invasion ... etc. No crime-blighted part of the world is up at the danger level of the Somme, or even some more moderately dangerous war zone like Iraq ( -- and right after the invasion of that country you'd find that the more prosperous areas of Baghdad were safe on 95 days out of a 100, too), but there are more places on Earth where a hijacking that ends with a bullet in your head, as you kneel down in a sugar cane field (or whatever) is just unthinkable. It's not going to happen. Lightning doesn't strike there. But it does strike, sometimes, in e.g. Sandton. It strikes relatively often, there. Not as often as shells flew in on the Somme, but much more frequently than house invaders get to destroy lives in Edinburgh.
I can relate to your mom mentioning her calmness during the robbery. I was hi jacked in my parents driveway. My mom and 7 week old daughter was with me. There was also a crazy one running up and down demanding and acting erratically. In retrospect he was probably high on something. My daughter was on my moms lap because we had just come back from grocery shopping and my car (a little Citroen C2) was full. So she couldn’t sit in her car seat. Again in retrospect thank heavens for that because I’m sure they would have just driven off with her! They demanded we get out of the car, which I did but my mom was battling to with my daughter in her arms. The crazy one grabbed my baby’s arm roughly and she began to cry, he looked like he was just going to throw her on the ground like a piece of dirt, so I dove back into the car and grabbed her from him. The other calmer guy that was on my side dug a 9mm gun into my ribs at my sudden movement. I stood back up with my arms crisscross over my daughter on my chest and looked him in the eye and said, “You can take everything, I don’t care, but don’t hurt my baby or mother…” He nodded and I planted my gaze back onto his chest, still with the 9mm in my ribs and they proceeded to take our jewelry and handbags etc. Sometime during all this my Dad came out of the garage with all the commotion and the crazy one waived his gun at him and my Dad jumped behind his car, which was also in the driveway. I am forever grateful that they were just after my car and didn’t force us into the house. They eventually left.
This all happened in Edenvale in the Avenues. The Police station is literally 500m from the house but it took the police over 2 hours to come and take our statements! Their excuse was there was no vehicle for them to drive as all of them were broken…. All 8 broken at the same time? Yeah right!!!!
Anyway, I’m shaking typing this as the memory floods back. The experience changed me. My daughter is now 13years old and yes we are still living in SA. Perhaps you think us stupid for staying but we were one of those families that just could not afford to leave. We could now I suppose but my husband and I are in our mid to late 40’s and we are pretty much over the age limit for most countries. We plan to retire in the next 10years abroad. We just have to survive until then…..

I taught in Taiwan with a Girl from CapeTown. at the end of her teaching contract, she collected her salary and Bonus money and was heading home.. I was totally baffled as to why she would want to return to a place where women are such targets... I pleaded and warned her to go elsewhere.. "Home is home" so she left and shortly after arrival we heard that she was robbed outside the airport and lost all of her money and possessions and narrowly avoided a kidnapping. - The fact that we "called it" and it all happened was extremely disturbing. - Education is badly needing an overhaul there.

Reminds me of a creepy story I was told at a young age. My mother had to use the bathroom but my grandma told her to stay down still cuz a criminal was looking through the window. They hand to duck and keep it dark for few hours it was creepy. Not surprisingly there was crime and theft at the time being in a poor place.

Here's a story when I lived in SA: I'll keep this super short. I was a kid sleeping at night when my house was surrounded by a couple of armed bandits. By sheer luck, one person in the house awoke and alarmed my father who also called the neighbors. When the neighbors said they were ready, they opened up on them. Two of the trogs got hit, one died on the way to the hospital, the other lost some brain matter to the gutter and then expired. There are many more stories to be told from benign to one's like that the gardener's son was hung on a telephone cord. This guy had nothing, yet the trogs still murdered his boy. All the black women I knew were molested or raped at some point in their lives by such trogs. Saw a dude blow bloody bubbles with his nose after getting stabbed up. I'm sure there's stuff that I repress.
Anyway, about the video - this story was close to my heart because my mother was held at gunpoint too and a trog attempted to murder her. Winston is super gentle, however; and escaped the jungle with no jungle in his heart. I, on the other hand, was only taught WAR by the "rainbow nation". Joseph I used to work with a lot of South Africans on the oil rigs and I can confirm they are probably the toughest people I’ve ever come across. Nothing phases the South Africans they keep their cool when I used to go to bits when we had a emergency breakdown. I just finished watching a documentary called “The Killing Fields” about the farm murders in SA and your video showed up on my notifications. Your mom was really lucky and brave to survive this ordeal. This is never reported on in the West. It appears no Western countries are offering asylum to these people who are living in fear. What a shame. Glad your Mom is OK.
Depending on the generation, some people will be eligible for right of return to the Netherlands. But not everyone, and not nearly enough. You are absolutely right there should be asylum for people fleeing violence because of their skin color in South Africa

When I was in college in the late 90's, I had a professor who had emigrated here to the US from South Africa after he had lost his wife in an attempted theft. A shame what is happening over there.

Having lived in Durban for a spell, I experienced this outlandish reality vicariously. I had a domestic worker who's brother was murdered for a cellphone and this was taken as a run of the mill event by everyone. I didn't stay long there after.

Although it's true that no place is 100% safe (that is just impossible in the imperfect world we live in) there are many places where you feel perfectly safe (for instance, my own country, Portugal) walking the streets at night, using your cell phone in public, etc - and there are others where you would not even DREAM of doing such things for JUSTIFIED fear of your life.
PERCEPTION is everything. Even if no place is 100% safe, it just needs to be 'safe enough' for you to be able to enjoy life without fear. No guns necessary.

We had a south African man stay with us in a very small rural town in Australia. He was over for a field day selling warthog knife sharpeners. With nothing but a plastic bag and boxes of sharpeners. Every night he would go and lock all the windows and doors. And said we don't understand. And hearing stories like this make me see why he was so paranoid.

I visited SA last year and was stuck there when covid hit. I’d been living in Europe for 3 years. Me and my 83 years old father had guns pointed at us in an attempted robbery at a traffic light. I’ll never set foot in that place again and my father is out of there too

I felt weird giving this a like but its a story that needs to be told.
There are hundreds of thousands of these stories in South Africa all my white friends have stories likes this.
The truth is that all south Africans experience these traumatic experiences. In the high-density townships and shantytowns, this is their daily life.
Its just crime, its not about black or white just poverty and desperation.
There is never an excuse for the violence, but so much more could have been done by both the apartheid and ANC governments to move the poverty experienced by so many to be reduced.
