Everything you said in this video rings true with me. I lived and worked in Shanghai for 5 years during your early years in Shenzhen. I met my wife there as well (mainland Chinese, but not Shanghainese). I was moved with my job to Hong Kong 13 years ago, but regularly visit Shenzhen (day trips, so I don’t have to register with the police, which I also hate) and trips back to my wife’s family. I could never live in China again (and my wife even more so) and, with the new Security Law in Hong Kong, we are now counting down our time in Hong Kong. I love the vibrancy here too. I first came to Hong Kong in 1988 and was immediately smitten by the place, back when Shenzhen was the factory expansion outlet for Hong Kong toy companies and other low-end products. Honestly, I dread having to leave in many ways, but I value personal freedom too much to risk being here when Hong Kong becomes too much like the mainland. The gap is closing fast now.

@@serenityyang750 No he doesn't have all videos targeting China. I didn't watched this channel for a long time (few years), and from watching his videos, I really was curious and wanted to visit it. And since I'm socialist I wanted to see, something more about country that call itself communist. Winston seems to keep it real. As any intelligent person could describe good and bad in any country. I'm not fan of US driven, and visible propaganda against China, in the last few years. China is threat to capitalist dominance of US, that's reality. US like they like to do, they attacks in a way of labelling that China bad because it's communist. China is a fascist state. Communism means freedom. The end goal of communist society is borderless state, with decentralised power, means of production controlled by workers not some fucking party elites. Nationalism, any hate against any group (maybe except the rich) is forbidden (nationality/race/gender/orientation/religion). And by the way fuck the US too. China and US are both bad with their ideology of supremacy. Some strategics of control and influence on the global scale, sometimes are very different and sometimes nearly the same. If you want present better your regime, do better job, because this comment was so weak is just sad.

    • @arhael1
      @arhael1 3 роки тому +21

@@serenityyang750 I know China isn't communist/socialist. Again is more of a fascist state. Most people don't understand that word, and many in the West keep saying it's overused. That's because most people when they hear fascist have image of Hitler, and death camps, and holocaust. But that's just extreme example. Modern day Republicans in US are fascists, and I would argue those before too. Any government that's allows or praise nationalism, discriminate against foreigners, have or aim to have total control of it's citizens, deny any wrongdoing is fascistic.
I don't know much about Winston travelling to HK, but him living for over a decade in China, having wife and family, should give him absolute right to going back mainland China. Same with being able to work. So those are not even any reasonable arguments for me.
And yeah he can even collaborate with US intelligence currently, seeing all tittles lately. But he doesn't seem to make stuff up, I don't see hate from him. I can see anti China propaganda everyday, and they don't try to make any sense, since most people don't know anything about this country, just say hey they're bad because communism, and there's no freedom and the holocaust. Winston doesn't fit the profile at all. China just like US are countries with the biggest potential for being example of good progress for humanity, yet both choose to play imperial dominance game. That's sad, and everybody on the planet will pay price for this. All of this is too big and complicated topic, so I will finish here. Have a good day.

@Soulwalker Young Your taking what I said a bit too literally. I don't mean that I ''completely'' understand a country by watching Serpentza's videos. Rather, they give me some insight to Chinese culture from a ''westerners'' or ''foreigners' point of view. Keep in mind, he's lived in China for about 14 and a half years. That's quite a bit of time for someone living in a foreign country and he has hundreds of videos talking about the culture, customs, foods, places, etc. Personally, I've learned more about China through his videos as compared to my parents who grew up in mainland China. Through his videos, I was able to understand a bit more clearly about the cultural differences between China and the West, and why my parents are the way they are. On a side note, I don't think anybody can fully ''understand'' a country, even if they lived there for their entire lives.

Great Wall wake up . Riots do happen in the U. S. and in China . Americans can know and see these things because we have press freedom and citizen activists not afraid to seek out and speak truth and protect one another . Hong Kong people want to keep their own democracy . Mainland Chinese don't know there are riots in China happening all the time because the CCP controls all the news and the police . Chinese people want peace so they don't question anything . They accept displacement and loss of rights and property if not they demonstrate. In America we question everything . We have that right we have citizen demonstrations big and small wherever and whenever. Unlike in China, American police do not routinely beat and drag off demonstrators , beat old women, destroy shops, yank people off their e-bikes, and club people randomly. Some American police have been brutal but there are consequences unlike Chinese brutality because the CCP protects and defends inorder to maintain control. Who profits ? That should be your concern . Peace ..

I made sure to take my Chinese-Filipina wife to Hiroshima (where I'd had such a wonderful time on that first trip), and we both loved the city and the welcoming, friendly attitude of all whom we dealt with. It's time when it is time. I left permanently for a different reason after 8 years of living in China. I unknowingly worked for a business owner and Solar Manufacturer, wanted by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. I was on the inside of a real cloak and dagger story that was fraught with murder, missing persons and embezzlement. I was questioned by the RCMP and by the Chinese equivalent of the FBI about my boss and then approached by my boss' partner. It got to be frightening and I left China after cooperating with both Law Enforcement agencies. It was insane. within two months after I left, the Chinese government deported by boss and his family and took over the company. I saw the writing on the wall and got the hell out.

I left Beijing over a year ago. Lived there for 8 years. Let me add this experience to Winston's video to give you guys an even broader picture.
    1) In the entirety of my time in China, the police visited my home a grand total of zero times... until Meng Wanzhou was arrested. Then they visited my home to check my documents FIVE times... in one month. They checked my passport, visa, residency permit, and housing contract each time looking for a problem. Did I mention that I'm Canadian? Must be a coincidence.
    2) This is the big one. China implemented a new law which enabled the government, at will, to investigate any foreign bank accounts over 5000 RMB (that's less than 1000 USD). They would freeze your assets and ask you for tax documents. If you were unable to provide it then they'd seize your entire bank account. Some people might read this and think "Well, I guess that's fair right? Nations have a right to tax those living in them." Fair enough, and I agree. Here's the problem:
You need to go to each and every single one of your previous companies to get those tax documents. Anyone who has worked in China immediately understands the problem. Chinese companies are often unprofessional, vindictive, and corrupt. This means that when you go to your previous company to ask for tax documents, you could be met with: "Well, you quit, so why should we help you?" or "You don't work here anymore so we don't have to give you anything."
Not only that, but some Chinese companies claim to be paying taxes on your salary, but are actually just deducting those taxes and pocketing them. Try explaining that to the Chinese government. They don't care. It's the foreigner's fault ALWAYS. Then there's my favorite: Gross incompetence. Some Chinese companies simply have no idea what they're doing, no idea how to get tax forms, no idea how to do tax forms, pretty much no idea about anything. They've just blundered along their entire existence.
China is hell. I left China for greener pastures. My new job pays me 70% less than China and I work literally twice as much and I'm 10x happier. Just wrap your mind around that.
EDIT: I wanted to add something to this because I always get angry Chinese nationalists saying exactly the same thing to me when they read things like this: "Well, if you hate it so much, then why don't you leave?!"
Let me tell you why. Because in my first year in China I adopted two kittens. I wanted to leave one year after that but China had a policy of one passport, one pet. So I wasn't allowed to leave with both cats. There was no way in hell that I'd leave one of my pets behind. Fast forward to a few years later, I got married. We were going to finish our contracts then leave, but we got drunk and accidentally rescued a dog from an abusive pet store. Now we needed three passports. Finally China changed the rule to 1 passport 2 pets.
EDIT 2: My wife isn't Chinese.

Truth eventually reveals itself because there are always brave people willing to pursue it even if it costs them their lives. If you want to live in a world where truth doesn't matter, that's your privilege. I don't. There will always be those who have their own agenda and in the pursuit of that agenda attempt to hide the truth. However, as much as they may try, they never succeed because there are always good people who won't allow a lie to live. I would give my life for the truth if the cause is a noble one and important enough to me. Others have given their livelihoods if not lives for it. This man has put his livelihood and life in harm's way for it. Without truth, decency and love, society devolves as it feeds on itself in a paroxysm of self-interest and self-dealing behavior.

For those who can get outta there, they're lucky; for those who can't, like Uyghurs, what they gonna do? Human rights are important, and stories have to be told so more people can realize how anti human rights China is and how much alike Nazi Germany and China are becoming. You think people like how more and more controlling China is? I'm from HK. I don't live there anymore but I still have lots of friends and family there. And I KNOW people are losing their freedom, getting arrested because they say stuff that China doesn't like, or claims terroristic. Just because YOU are okay with being suppressed doesn't mean everyone else is. Those who're suffering from the largest legit terrorist group NEED channels like this to expose what the real China is like.

Funny how Chinese people are generally healthier though than north Americans. The air is definitely clearer here, but we make up the difference with horrible food consumption. You shouldn't assume that your assumption is the absolute truth, especially over something you have no concrete experience of.

I feel the same way. I first went to China in 2007. Fell in love with the culture (the historical real Chinese culture) I met my wife in Shenzhen. We were planning to retire in China. But she says no to that idea now. Scary how the CCP is today. How they handled the virus is an example of what you said in this video.

I agree. My wife is currently stuck in HK because of the covid travel ban. And she sees daily what the ccp is doing to her home. She wants out but also wants to stay and help. The ccp is simply evil. Not the Chinese people, or the culture, the ccp.

China had its good times from 2007-2013. Once Xi took over it has been going downhill. Also how they handled coronavirus by covering up is no different than how they handled 2003 SARS. None of the lessons were learned. Only that Covid is much more damaging than SARS.

You are 100% right, China can not handle the virus as well as what the US are still doing. This is the reason why the US become the biggest home of the virus in the world but it even can not keep growing for a little bit longer time in China. So, take care of the virus baby better.
