First off: DKR's use of nature, exploration, dinosaurs, adventure and racing was and is unmatched and so original it makes it one of the most memorable games of all time.
Why is there no other kart racer with an Adventure Mode?! The use of themes for groups of tracks, while making each unique, was brilliant. And the overworld was fun to just explore, with secrets to discover all over the place! And the use of different vehicles? Brilliant!
I remember when I wanted Mario Kart 64 for Christmas and my parents got me DKR instead because "The guy at the store said it was better". I was happy to get a new game and a present but disappointed at the same time as all my friends had Mario Kart. Once I popped the game in and started I was hooked on DKR and had a blast playing it! I had some friends try it and my friends all wanted DKR and were begging their parents for it. I don't know who you are but thank you random person for suggesting this game! You were definitely right!
One of the staples of my childhood was reading the extra plot details in the instruction booklets on the ride home from buying a new game. Still bummed that went away.
Omg I remember begging my parents to let me open my game so I could look at them and just read the manual and hold the game excitedly. I remember getting my gba and later my DS and being so excited I could *play* the game on the way home.

I want this guy to read this: Corneria, fourth planet of the Lylat system. The evil Andross turned this once thriving system into a wasteland of near extinction. General Pepper of the Cornerian army was successful in exiling this manical scientist to the barren, deserted planet Venom.
One of the best parts about the the 2 Player Adventure code on was when it came to Silver Coin Challenges you could designate somebody to get them and have another guy intentionally be an enforcer to take out conventionally stronger racers so you can mess with the pole positions to ensure you could win comfortably after getting all the coins. Greenwood Village was the bane of my existence but if you made sure racers like Diddy, Pipsy, or Tiptup didn't get close to first, it was a hell of a lot easier to manage. Speaking of co-op in a Rare game, Jet Force Gemini allowing 2nd player to play as Floyd once you put him together was good fun especially since it was never bad to have somebody who had unlimited ammo and couldn't exactly die.
That was such a great strategy. Me and my brother also played this way. Although me as the enforcer would simply park on the home straight or nearest red balloon collect 3 of them and then create carnage by firing 10 rockets into the oncoming pack stopping only to avoid hitting my brother. Given both of us were both young kids and not particularly fast against ultimate AI this was the only way we could win. I engineered some epic comebacks for him as his sniper team mate. Great memories
i thought this was a thing as well, but watching a playthrough of the game on here proved otherwise. it has to be one player getting them all for themselves
Loved this game as a kid! Timber was always my guy, partly because I adored tigers. And this is the first game I know of with transforming cars. Long before Sonic All-Stars did it. I think they went with hovercraft rather than boats just so you could still move it on land. And I always wondered if there was a ditched mechanic of racers being knocked out of their vehicles? I mean we see that several times in the opening where they are running back to their cars. And the deleted vehicle makes me wonder if they planned a new space vehicle for Wizpig's home tracks? I still would have loved to see the racers in tiny Arwings rather than the planes in the space levels.
Shame that Krunch was the only character that was flat out "bad". Because the DKR tracks prioritized tight turns more then straightaways, the lightweights always had a disproportionate advantage over the heavyweights. You didn't get enough of a chance to build up speed for higher top speeds to matter, so the Pipsy and Tiptup ended up having an unfair advantage with their fast acceleration and tight turning with car races, which were the most common. Their tight turns were almost a detriment in the hovercrafts, so that's when you'd want to use someone else. All the Medium weight cahracters were broadly the same: medium enough that they were all solid. Banjo was the Viable heavyweight, as while his steering and accelartion were poorer then the lighter characters, they were usable enough that you had a chance to make use of his higher max speed. Krunch's steering is SOOO bad you needed ot use the breaks to make any turns.... and having the worst acceleration meant you were constantly slowing down. So him having the best max speed out of the original roster just didn't get a chance ot play out. And by the time you're good enough to make use of him, you've unlocked Drumstick, who's the same character but even FASTER with slightly better steering: Drumstick's steering was still BAD but still better then Krunch's. I think the game would've benefitted from making Weight have more of an impact: Heavy Characters took less to time recovery from attacks, and could knock other carts out of the weay w/o losing speed on impact, ect.
I'm glad to hear that, it's always difficult with these kinds of videos when picking things to go into them. Diddy Kong racing was amazing. I look forward to doing more videos on it.
Diddy Kong Racing > Mario Kart. Rareware always went above and beyond on their projects and this game was no exception. It looks great, the soundtrack and effects sound great, it has infinite re-playability, and it still holds up to this day. Mario Kart is excellent but DKR just nails everything perfectly
The 'timetolose' code (harder AI) really does make a big difference. I timed the AI on a few courses with the code on vs off, and the AI finishes a whole 10 seconds faster on most courses with the code activated. It makes a big difference and is highly recommended if you're ever replaying this game.
Yeah all the magic codes fundamentally altered the gameplay. It's crazy to think that rare took this approach and not adding them directly into a features menu.
Freeforall is also a crazy code for the death match minigames, because you get access to the 10 rockets variant and with no cooldown time the AI will spam all 10 Rockets at once which if it hits is basically an instant kill
Diddy Kong Racing is my favorite "kart" racing game, I've replayed it more than any other. It's genuinely fun, engaging, challenging and has decent variety of vehicle types.
It’s funny to me that Nintendo felt the need to obtain the rights to Krunch due to him being part of the Kremling species which Nintendo owns, but then there’s someone like Boshi who’s literally a Yoshi but with shades, fangs and a collar, yet they didn’t bother to acquire him from Square.
The only thing unbelievable about these stories, is that Conker, the drunk, cursing, womanizing squirrel, would get a call from the friendly cute tiger to come help. I guarantee during half of the races, Conker was drunk driving 😂😂
This was way before Conker's Bad Fur Day. Conker was gonna be the star of a kid-friendly platformer for the Nintendo 64, but that game got cancelled because Rare was told that they were making too many video games for kids, so they turned Conker's Quest into the M-rated platformer we all know and love.
There’s rumours about another Diddy Kong Racing? Well I certainly hope that’s true. I would love Nintendo and Rare to get on board again making sequels to the now nostalgic games we played as kids. I know Microsoft owns rare, but I doubt neither of them would lose any money in this deal.

I knew a few of these but overall this was fun. Honestly though one of my biggest surprises was finding out decades later that TT is playable. Went straight back to the game to unlock him
I was frustrated as hell as a kid when i finally unlocked him and drumstick only to realize they both kinda sucked... but i always favored the light nimble characters. Pipsy, and in mario kart: toad
@@chriso1373 wait what? TT is absolutely broken, having 5/5 acceleration and speed, with an okay 2.5 turning rating. This isn't as good as Pipsy sure, but his turning is still tied for 4th best in the game.

I realized he was playable years later after seeing a random video of DKR, went to the game again and tried but Jungle Falls and Fossil Canyon T.T's ghosts were pain to beat, learned the zipper trick and finally managed to get him

In the players guide for DKR, it lists all the cheats available, though it doesn’t list the codes you must enter to unlock them (you’re given a random code every time you win one of the Wizpig races). There’s a ‘high speed racing’ cheat, and to this day, no one knows how to unlock it. The game simply never gave the code for it.
@@thequestgamer Turns out the cheat would have to be unlocked using a cheating device. It would make the racers be at top speed (150 mph) all the time. That would’ve been a fun code, though it’d make unlocking T.T. easy (ace the time trials).
Most of the things i didnt knew as child. But one day we played it again on another level with A Button and drifts for months . I have alot of very strong times on my n64 console. If you can use A Button and drifts perfectly you can play a new perfect game. Its the best n64 game in my opinion.

@@ultimategamer8229 I meant MK8
…and Conker
This guy sounds like Aku-Aku from Crash bandicoot!😂 woudigaahh
This seems like a video Ai would have made.. love the topics though
Krunch was the worst character. Unplayable and only slightly faster than Banjo who controlled 10x better.
My favorite racing game ever
In the players guide for DKR, it lists all the cheats available, though it doesn’t list the codes you must enter to unlock them (you’re given a random code every time you win one of the Wizpig races). There’s a ‘high speed racing’ cheat, and to this day, no one knows how to unlock it. The game simply never gave the code for it.
Interesting. Would it not be the Free fruit cheat? To start with 10 banana's right away.
@@thequestgamer Not the same.
Hmm, Was a shot in the dark.
@@thequestgamer Turns out the cheat would have to be unlocked using a cheating device. It would make the racers be at top speed (150 mph) all the time. That would’ve been a fun code, though it’d make unlocking T.T. easy (ace the time trials).
Ah, That makes why they wouldn't include it then. Theres a video on the cheating devices planned, I'd hazard and say this month it'll come out.
Most of the things i didnt knew as child.
But one day we played it again on another level with A Button and drifts for months . I have alot of very strong times on my n64 console. If you can use A Button and drifts perfectly you can play a new perfect game. Its the best n64 game in my opinion.
Just a tip.. The red border on the thumbnail makes it look like I already watched this.
Oh, I used red to color code the things you didn't know series. Thank you for the insight, I'll have to adjust that.
4:10 wizpig on that powder
Already like your videos bro
So I wonder why Nintendo only removed Banjo and Conker for the DS version. Maybe that their names were in game titles?
Because they're Rare's characters, duh. Ask a stupider question, why don't ya?
Ouch.. new here.. the outro was too loud. But good interesting video
Thanks for the feedback, I'll keep that in mind for upcoming content.
Wow these were all thinks I actually didn't know.
What is that song used in the outro? I’ve heard it before but just can’t remember where.
I'd prefer a bad voice over the robot.
Wow, there are codes for co-op multiplayer? omg, i didn't know.
Yeah, rare put a lot of the games features behind magic codes. It was a strange approach, but also I guess was their way of trying to incentivize players to replay.
@@thequestgamer Yeah, i knew about a lot of them on Conker's Bad Fur Day, to unlock stuff in the multiplayer mode, but unlocking a whole new mode is just crazy. Rare have such a trick game design philosophy it just keeps surprising me.
In fact, I bought it on Release day
I remember playing my adult older brother in this and crushing him with Pipsy. He got so upset with this game, hahaha.
Waiting for it on eso... not holding my breathe
I have 2 brothers ...when I was a kid my dad took us to go buy a game each ....since we didn't know what games where bad or good ... my older bro got loz ocarina of time ..I got bomber man 64 ( smh game was shit)...n my lil bro got Diddy Kong racing...which is years better than Mario kart
seriously better than mario kart
Another AI voice 🙄
The videos are good and very interesting but the AI generated voice is uncanny
Great facts!
but i knew these things
why are youtube video titles so aggressive
Microsoft got ripped off badly tbh
8 things you Diddyn't know
