I know this is naive but out of all games that could release this year, nothing current gen could compare to the excitement I'd have playing a second SM 64. I love the Nintendo 64 and Gamecube era and somehow having more new games from that time would be beyond amazing. I wouldn't need more power ups or big changes, I'd be beyond happy just to have more of the Mario 64 world to explore. I know this won't happen but I would love to have new retro console games being made. Forget having to come up with big new gimmicks, just give me more of what I fell in love with. I think the mindset that "every game must have a new concept or gimmick" really hurt Nintendo as they missed SO many opportunities to expand the amazing worlds they made IMO.
This channel is underrated. Just found it last week and I'm surprised it has some decent content. The channel started out a month ago and still going strong. Good luck with your UA-cam career, Quest Gamer ^-^
As far as my research into the topic showed, nintendo believed galaxy 2 was significantly different than 1. At some point I will probably cover it, but I wanted to give the topic a bit more breathing room before I revisit.
I remember there was a lot of hype around Mario 128, but in the end it was just a tech demo, the decision of keeping it like that makes a lot of sense in corporate level, but hype will still be hype
Excellent job finding all of these facts and interview points. I really appreciate your level of scholarship, my friend, I hope success continues for you!
We may not have gotten a proper sequel to Mario 64 (although Mario Sunshine certainly feels like a spiritual successor), we can enjoy the next closest thing, Mario 64 ROM hacks, which offers a whole new experience on the same engine.
I spent quite a bit of time on old Nintendo forums around the time that came out and this was discussed a lot. It seemed the general opinion was that 64 DS was good and satisfied everyones craving for 3D Mario, but we all still expected Mario 128 any day. Knowing more about the industry now, I would've guessed 64 DS would be the final nail in the coffin for 128, given the time, resources and effort I don't imagine they'd put into making such similar games at the same time. I wouldn't be surprised if some ideas planned for 128 went into 64 DS instead.
Hmm it always feels like Nintendo is out of touch with the fans. It is mentioned that sunshine was too similar to sm64 and the next game should be different…and it gave us the galaxy games. Which are great games and a lot of people love but the movement can’t hold a candle to sm64. I feel like they got it perfect the first time. There is a reason sm64 is the most speedran game of all time. The smash bros community went through the same thing with melee and brawl.
Unfortunately it never came to be. No other official Mario game plays like it, no Mario game came close to it, no Mario game felt like it, it's really a shame. Not even the remake plays like it. It's very sad.
7:05 funny because I recently got a Gamecube and I was playing Smash Melee last night and came across Super Mario 128, and I used the exact same strat in this video to beat it! What are the odds I see it the very next day here? lol
And people complained about Duke Nukem forever's development time. 😲😲 At least that eventually appeared, how Miyamoto didn't seem to connect people expecting mario 128 to be a sequel to 64 is a bit baffling.

I'm currently tidying up the last stages of editing on a development video right now, that should be released fingers crossed in the next 24ish hours if I'm being optimistic. For paper Mario, I have looked at it for the 64 and quickly realized, that I'm going to need to find time to replay through the whole game. Otherwise, I can't realistically do the video well. When I get time, I will absolutely be exploring the title, I can promise that. I have very fond memories of the series, and I do want to get around to it. But its a similar issue with games like Zelda, I need to set aside a sizeable amount of time to go through the game, make notes etc, then begin research and eventually that morphs into a video. Thanks for stopping by and I'm glad you like the content!
that aspect is speculation. Sorry for not making that clear. It was my assumption given how Nintendo's design principles are. I could of course be very wrong.
Super MArio 64 2 should've been released on either a 16MB(128MBit) cartridge; or a 32MB(256MBit) cartridge instead. I understand Nintendo wanted to take advantage of the extra Zip Disk storage at the time, but they should've just followed what Rareware, Konami, 3DO, and Ubisoft were doing and just focused on cartridge development if they couldn't keep their promise in tact. Especially considering the fact that 2nd and 3rd Parties didn't want to keep delaying releases of the games that would come to the console; only to be held back by constant delays of the add-on!
It always disappointed me that Nintendo never gave us a true mario 64 sequel. Every game after had something that made it feel too different and could never completely satisfy what fans of SM64 loved about it.
Seriously, i'm not even think that 128 was full game. I always think that thing was a demo, no more. How did in different side of world people expect it to be full game
I wish the had 8mb of ram and the expansion was 8mb as well because I seen it could indeed run 16mb so only getting 8mb of ram all together was a huge miss I think if they went for 16mb of ram from the get go they could have easily ran it til 2002 and released a lot of these sequels
I’ll never understand this. People CLEARLY wanted a follow-up but Miyamoto preferred to explore other “creative” ideas that ended up being inferior versions of the game people actually wanted. It is very similar to where COD is right now. Give the people want they want. How can you not find gratification in that? It would been better to just walk away completely instead of Constantine teasing it.
Maybe it's for the better we never got Mario 64 2. I love Zelda, that franchise means a lot to me but I don't care for Majora's Mask. Super Mario 64 2, Metroid 64, and Resident Evil 1.5 were my most anticipated games of the late 90's.
The closest thing to Mario 64 2 we have is Mario 64 DS
