- In what appears to be the year of the dungeon crawler RPGs, I’m reviewing yet another one to close out the year! This time around, it’s Conception PLUS, a remake of a PSP game that never made it to the West. While many RPG fans will easily call this ecchi at best, it did make me wonder if this mislabeled the experience - or rather, if the experience was going to just be dominated by this flavor? Find out what I think about Conception PLUS in my review! And fair warning: there’s some hidden innuendo lodged deep within the video’s script ;)

I've heard about this game before and it's concept really made me distance myself from it, now seeing the gameplay it actually looks a lot of fun and seems to be well written to what I expected. Great review man!

What I have seen Conception + might be more lewd than II:nd one we got. There's no Chlotz and dungeons are shorter (good thing).
I haven’t played 2, but I’d imagine the number of dungeons (13) even out to about the same amount of time to clear as that game, I’d wager. But that’s a good point though. Yet another aspect of the game affected by early Sony portable design decisions!

honestly i love these games yeah they're not masterpieces or for everyone, but they are fun and the girls usually have nice storylines.
It’s been a while now but I do remember loving the stories for each of the girls!
"But there's something to be said about stories that fully embrace the absurdity that they wrote themselves into" engaging with irony into things that actually becomes unironical joy is my kind of jam!
I think there’s a place for games that explore that kind of storytelling! I certainly enjoyed my time with Conception because of it!
I couldn't help but laugh when I saw the literal army of children running around behind you at 2:41. And the random surprise trap you get hit by only added to the hilarity xD
Looks fun. Was eyeing it for the Steam Sale right now. Still on the fence (I got a huge backlog) but it does look like fun.
Definitely a fun and quirky game! Spent a lot of time trying to really arm my Star Children and unlocking the different classes! Do let me know if you wind up picking it up!

I played a bit of the second game and wanted to try this one since it’s an updated version and all. But uh, I’m sure many can agree the awkwardness of buying a game with Conception in the name

I played the original Conception on the PSP before. _ahem_ i mean "Conception - ore no kodomo o unde kure!" which was pretty much a string of weird ancient folklore words to the younger me back then. i had no idea what to read, everything was in japanese and it took so long for the game to even let me into the first "Gameplay" section, that i got tired of it and quit. years later, i found a copy of it on the bargain bin, and thought i'll purchase it for once, now that i had my own PSP and money to afford games on it. still the English fan-translation of the name really drove my guts to the drain, as i really REALLY want to be misunderstood on what types of games i liked. i liked Retro games anyways, it wasnt my cup of tea.
Oh boy was i wrong. fast forward 3 years later, with a limited knowledge of japanese, but now broke and having sold pretty much everything i had since i left home, i stuck to getting my gaming fix with Emulators and ROMS from online. and i... really, for real played Conception with an intent to really "Play" it for the first time. And what do you know, i had fun!
Granted i still didnt really get pretty much half of the words or sentences in the game, but the gameplay was FIRE! You put everything i felt about the game into a well written 14 min video, and i thank you for it. I first heard about the Remaster back when Spike was releasing it back in Nov last year, as well as Announcing the R;N DaSH Localization, and it got me going back and paying it all over again.
Given my busy schedule, i just again finished it today, and i can say i dont want to hesitate and buy the PLUS ver. when i get the chance (and when i get some extra spendable money for it of course). If the Remaster has everything of the original and more, "PLUS" Improved graphics and Jap Dubs, i cant see it not being a good Remaster. Spike is just reliable on these stuff, and i'm grateful.
Good to have found a great and objectively approached review of the game, that kept self opinions and extra details about the game to a minimum. although i think it should have been mentioned that it has a good learning curve, and that the game is not forgiving on the difficulty side as well, for which you need plenty of grinding early on in the game. i know i got my asses kicked when i rode straight down to the boss in the first labyrinth and found out the hard way to "NOT GO THROUGH THE DUNGEON IN JUST ONE GO"
Thanks for your comment! Those are certainly things I could've included in my review! My particular focus was on depicting the game from a perspective that tries to dispel a lot of the initial "first impressions" that the game can give people, so I admit that I was a bit blindsided by the other details you mentioned! Nonetheless, I'm happy that I struck a good chord withint you with my review and hope you enjoy the game whenever you decide to pick it up! Oh, and it does have Japanese dubs!
Also, thank you for sharing your story! I'm a bit impatient when it comes to learning new languages, so I applaud you for the effort!
i'm glad you have a video on this as i got it for Christmas and while i like my ecchi games a lot this has got me to push it up the backlog as it does seem pretty fun for what it is.

I found the dialog and story cringe. Do you read ecchi manga for the story? The battle system was interesting and I'm just a slave to the grind.
On one side, we've got Death Stranding and on the other, we've got Conception. What a good thing.

I loved the Conception II game on PS Vita. I was curious about this one but i was worried it would be neutered beyond belief because of Sony's prudish censorship policies recently.
I may check this out when it goes on sale.
Despite any alterations Spike Chunsoft did, I feel that my comment about committing to a gag or a bit still stands, and that’s not because of any censorship either.

I don’t recall seeing a New Game+ when I beat it. But it did have a clear save data! I haven’t loaded that file yet though!

Thanks for your patience! I can confirm there’s a New Game Plus, and a lot of things - including Star Maiden standings - do carry over! You have a choice of two ways to play: Starting at the Prologue, or before the last boss. Hope this helps!

Conception 2 is one of my all time favorite RPGs and I never imagined the original would get remade. I'd buy this if I had the console, but I'm just happy that the series isn't completely dead.
I’m hoping that Conception 2 follows suit! I really have fond memories of this game, and I still keep thinking about its battle system!
@@BacklogBattle I feel the same way, although I hope the Conception 2 remake gets released for the Switch like how the original was on the 3DS. But I don't know if my heart can handle seeing HD Mark and Alec.
One thing I really hate from Conception is the all baby making thing, It is kind of a nuisance to me . I used to play Conception II on VIta a while ago, and everything is fantastic except the baby making thing and maybe even the gameplay ( but still I hate the baby making thing) . I dont understand what is the concept behind this and why they decide to do this instead of just letting the hero and heroine fight only. ?? Everything about this series was so good except the baby making thing that stop me from buying the game , Do you think I should still buy it ? I drop Conception II a while ago when I lost my Vita so now i am trying to play both the conception again on steam
I've always seen the baby making thing as just a veneer that gives context to all the character creation that happens, so it really didn't bother me much. That said, if you really, really don't like this idea, then this game will not change your mind towards that!

The whole series is built around this gameplay though. That said, the girls are well developed (pun?) and I really enjoyed getting to know as many of them as I could in the time I played it! That's the saving grace for me with this game.

Tbh the only premise of this game is just trying to see the ending of the main character with the girls you like . That is the only thing pushing me trying to complete the game

I just beat this game for the first time. It was just as much of a wonderful experience as Conception II. It was a lot of fun, even if bonding with all the girls felt a bit tedious at times. Here's hoping the second one gets remastered too, or even better, a Conception III.

I am a weeb so I really liked this game :D And while I cant say the story is anything impressive, the characters really are surprisingly well written :) Its never gonna get a fair shot in the mainstream because of the "creepy" relationships (as many todays totally unbiased reviewers would say) I had a great time :)

I personally did not look at a single thing about this game until I played a good majority of it. And even then, it's more along the lines of looking at its legacy and history, which is represented in the video. As a general rule, I try and avoid any coverage for games I wish to review because I'm fully aware of my proclivity to be influenced by hype, marketing, and conversations about the game. This is something that you might want to remember, as there will be opinions that I express are often outside of the norm! I don't do this on purpose, it's just the way that I personally view games through my literal and figurative lens!
When I heard about how "naughty" Conception Plus was, I wanted to see for myself if this was as bad as people said it was. The video reflects what I found, but it goes to show that evaluations differ from person to person. Heck, my wife - who generally dislikes innuendo in games - fell in love with many of the girls in the game! It's why I think hearing different perspectives are important, which is why I always try to read and reply to as many comments as I can!
How the hell did this game get an English dub but not the MHA video games.
First of all, they’re different publishers. The MHA games were published by Bandai Namco, and this one is published by Spike Chunsoft, who, for the most part, dubs a majority of their games. Second, budget. Maybe they didn’t have the money to do it? And finally, if they did English dubs, do they hire the same people from the anime to do the dubs (more money) or different people (less money)? Lots to factor in!

@@BacklogBattle i think the game took itself alot more seriously. The innuendos were alot more subtle aside from the whole classmating mechanic. I felt the dating sim aspect was pretty strong. There is no re:zero esque outlandish plot like in + everything was self-contained in that games world.
I could be wrong about the innuendoes haven't played that game in a while so i don't remember much but aside from boob shots and cliche scenes and some sexual dialogue you can make your character say it wasnt that in your face.
(Probably because mana doesn't exist in that game)
What I don't like in this franchise is that you are not giving the option of staying with just one girl. I'm not a fan of harem, but you have to intercourse with all girls.
