I saw them as opening acts a couple of times in the mid 80s. He played with such power i was amazed at how he kept from breaking heads back then. It looked like he was taking full power swings at the snare each time.

I got to see Queensryche in ‘91 from the third row at the Wheeling, WV Civic Center. They played Mindcrime from start to finish and just about all of Empire with a lot of Rage for Order thrown in. As a young drummer, it was mesmerizing to see Scott’s massive white Tama kit from Empire up close and the sound of the entire band was just incredible. I swear it was like listening to them on CD the whole night. The coolest thing was seeing how he played the groove in Della Brown. There was zero overdubbing on that song, that’s for sure, and I ended up practicing that hi-hat/ride cymbal pattern for hours to get it nailed down. It’s too bad that the band was never quite the same not long after, even though Promised Land and Hear in the Now Frontier had some quality tracks. I wish I could’ve gotten into Tribe, Q2K, and Mindcrime II, but it just never clicked for me.

I read about this in some mixing magazine. He sound replaces his snare in the FOH mix using a ProTools interface and mic input triggering. So he’s got it tuned high just for feel as the top Beta 57 is not going to FOH mix. But they do use the bottom snare mic in real time just to get some snare buzz and ghost notes. Peace.

I think one of the reasons why he’s so underrated is that people tend to evaluate drummers on the difficulty level or speed etc and many fail to see just how much feel and tension-release this guy creates behind the kit. My eyes really opened to just how tasty his playing is in -99 when I saw the band live. That was pre UA-cam era so it was the first time I SAW them play and was blown away.

Thanks for sharing this video. Scott is one my drumming influences. There are some notable differences from his earlier approach / sound. His snare is much tighter pitched / tuned than the Empire tour. He does some ad-lib fills, something most drummers do after playing a song after many years. He plays the ride cymbal part on the bow of the cymbal, instead of the bell. He is using a washier sounding Sound Formula ride, instead of the Paiste Signature Dry Ride (I use the same ride on rock gigs) which has more focused ping and a clear bell sound. One thing that stays the same is his solid pocket, which he is known for.
