All the new Tundras at my local dealership are sold before they hit the lot. Been trying for months and this is the closest I've been able to get to a test drive. Really strongly appreciate it.

It’s a totally different type of channel. It’s so in-depth and so critical whereas the ones a lot of casual viewers want are surface level and “fun” aka TheStraightPipes.
The grill looks bmw huge. Losing the reliable million mile v8 is not good. Twin turbos and complicated crap everywhere. White leather is stupid.. toyota must have no idea how trucks get used. I dont want to replace twin turbos on my wallet. The hoses everywhere look like children laid out the engine. I own a sequoia and i will buy a tahoe or suburban to stay flat floor and v8.
Toyota knows how buyers use trucks like these. Most of them haul a box full of air 90 percent of the time and a kid seat or two persistently. Don’t kid yourself.
@Steven Strain because for people the turbos have been the weak link and they are super expensive to replace. Cars get heat cycled way more often then trucks. Billy Bon starts his truck on a cold morning and just starts driving like they tell him to. The turbos heat up so fast and boom. Tons of west and tear. A lot of turbo engines run 0w-20 oil that (in my opinion) doesn’t provide the necessary protection for turbo bearings. And then just sloppy/ lack of maintenance consumer cars see
man, that reliability question and the complexity to work on it is just a huge bummer. I hope It turns out reliable. But a ton of the reliability name from Toyota came from the easy to work on, and easy to keep on the road... this takes that away...

I don't understand why the giant tablet in the center has to be symmetrical and face directly forward. For who? I'm the driver. I'm the one who needs to interact with it and see it. I want some cars to copy the "fighter jet cockpit" motif/style that cars like the Lincoln Mark series perfected decades ago. Everything tilted, catered to, and directed towards the driver for his comfort and convenience.
I have a 2015 Tundra 1794 Edition. 180,000 miles on it. I towed over 12,000lbs last week for nearly 70 miles in rural WV. I know I am way over the max towing #'s but I have went way over the recommended #'s since I bought the truck new and it towed like a champ then and it still tows like a champ nearly 8 years later.

Thr new sequoia already falls behind its rivals in space and it’s not even out yet. No sliding middle seats, tight third row, puny cargo space no independent rear suspension anymore

I like this truck overall but I agree that it probably needs 2-3 years of production to iron out any issues, especially that complex looking motor. They nailed the interior - looks very upscale.
Forget about fixing it yourself or even by your local mechanic after it is out of warranty. With late path of manufacturers to make sure that things do not last past the warranty period, this cool truck can be a money pit.
How regular ? I've never owned a turbo engine and not really sold on them. Toyota will address any problems and they will be resolved. I owned a GM vehicle once that was plagued with problems none of which were recalled. I was finally able to fix all of the problems myself. I traded the GM on a new Camry.
As someone who is 6'9", this Tundra was the ideal choice for cabin size being accommodating to my size while still having room for others. I got my 1794 edition Saturday, and drove 4 passengers around incredibly comfortably, even with my seat all the way back. Also nice on my trim level was a knee back extender, that although it doesnt quite hit my knees, it definitely would for someone shorther than myself. For my arm length, I have zero issue reaching any of the navigating functions of the infotainment system. Hope this is useful for my taller fellow drivers. LOVE THIS TRUCK!
They've pretty much ironed out any of the initial issues with the ecoboosts, even then they weren't that problematic. What is your experience "working" on them? The borg warner turbos on them aren't giving out at 50 miles like the Tundras are.
I still feel hybrid ice engines are going to be the future with hydrogen eventually replacing fossil fuels just because conversion is easier than widespread replacement of entire vehicles.
Cab off maintenance…….a gas version of the 6.0 Powerstroke, great idea. On another note I’ve always wondered why the big 3’s nomenclature for their light duty diesel segment sounds like some kind of Asian male enhancement pill
Correction, you don't need to removed the cab to get at the turbo to fix the waste gate issue. One person that had the waste gate issues with his truck, stated in his review that the dealership did not lift the cab off, they simple remove one of the front wheel and replace it.
Toyota makes the best hybrid system I think, as they have been able to refine it for years. It will be interesting if in a few years they'll have some kind of Lithium Ion pack for this truck, that could make a big difference in mileage / range and power. I'd like to get one of these, but no way in hell am I just going to order it. I'll wait for crazy town pandemic / supply chains to get back to normal... Even if that takes another few years, I'd rather wait it out. Thanks for the great video, my legs fell asleep while I was on the toilet.
They are both the same basic design with the Ford system helping with fuel economy a bit more on the EPA test cycle. However, for me getting the Ford is a no brainer due to the 7.2kWh plug in the bed. Great for camping or powering a job site. Ford is unmatched in this segment for practicality.

@@trp2413 maybe so. But I think the gains in fuel economy would still be very noticeable, enough to at least give us the option. In the recent fuel economy tests on TFL, it got beat I believe by the ram 5.7 with a nine speed.
Guys, I'm confused. I watched your Sequoia vid yesterday and you pretty much hated the seats/interior. In this truck, you really like the interior and comfort. Are the seats different? I'm really interested in a Sequoia but honestly I'm holding off because I need a long distance tourer/hauler (no family), and trying to see if this Tundra or the Sequoia might work better. Tundra is sooooo overrated. I get it a Toyota and will last well over 180k miles. But tye hybrid still does come short. If it did 24/ highway and 20 city it be so WOW! It does 2 miles better than regular.
Five foot truck box that will make me the man at home depot. Loading up half size sheet rock like a alpha male . The hybrid shows that I sit down to see like a gentleman
JBL and Levinson are just different heads on the Harman Audio hydra, and in the non-automotive space Levinson is positioned way more as a high end amplifier company while JBL is speakers-at all price points and with a big “value” presence but their JBL Synthesis line is $$$$ for proper high end/installation rich-people home theater stuff. Which is a long-winded and confusing way of me saying that it wouldn’t surprise me if the same team at Harman worked on the audio for both cars, and/or if a lot of the underlying tech and equipment is largely the same minus the “JBL” or “Mark Levinson” on the speaker grilles.
I got a powerboost f150, the hybridization seems very similar. There was initially some funkyness with the trans shifting into third initially but after 1k miles it kind of just went away. I assume the shift tables needed time to calibrate. Anyways this toyota seems decent, F150 definitely has better details and refinement in terms of WORK stuff. Toyota looks like it has better attention to detail though. Ford just leaves random zipties and shit from manufacturing all over the truck and is just like ok here you go bud. But overall I think the f150 is winning right now, you can't deny the billions that ford put into it.
A year ago I got a '16 RAV4 hybrid used. While it's ultimately a boring SUV for errands and commuting, I do love the instant torque off the line, although it runs out of steam pretty quick. It's basically FWD, the rears are a separate electric motor with pitiful power, only really good for low speed launch or slippage. It also uses a nickel hydride battery, but the EV mode doesn't have any real speed or range. I really wanted a RAV4 prime but since I will be living in an apartment with no charger, I'm glad this hybrid tech is going into larger vehicles. Here's hoping for a highlander or 4runner with some serious power/torque and fuel efficiency.
Amazing how hard it seems to get screens right. They're all either too small, too big, not intuitive, has too many functions like HVAC, etc. Though I get it; the look is "aesthetically pleasing" to keep it symmetrical and not tilt it towards the driver.
I really, really like the Audis and a few other luxury vehicles that have "screens go away now" folding buttons or whatever. Another failure point long term, but sure makes the interior better when the screens arent required.
none of the screens look aesthetically pleasing, every single vehicle interior with a screen will be dated by that screen. quality switch gear/knobs/dials will always be superior in use to a touch screen for functions like HVAC.

I agree with everybody. Of our 2 cars, 1 is new and has a screen, the other is old and does not have one. I don't feel like I'm missing anything by not having a screen, other than the 'convenience' of android auto

I understand the need to turbo everything, but who are we kidding, it won't even matter in ten years as everything with be EV. I have driven Toyotas since 1983 and currently own a 2021 Tacoma TRD OR. I agree with you on the V6. I'm a little sketchy on a turbo 4 cylinder but I am interested in a hybrid Tacoma .I wish they would make a Tacoma Prime minus a turbo.
the interior design in the tundra may look better but the features and offroad capabilities on the LC300 and LX600 are better because both types are indeed the off-road capabilities that are highlighted, even the LC300 besides full time 4WD also gets rear and front div lock + crawl and special suspension, while the tundra gets a hybrid but not a full time 4wd and at least only gets a rear div lock.
@@lightshunshine3861 you don't need full time 4wd to go offroad. Youre better off with a selectable 4Low. And I'm sure the tundra has other trims (TRD?) that have at least a rear locking diff.
@@wigletron2846 I think I made the wrong comment (not quite right), I made a mistake that the 4x4 LX 600 and Lc300 systems are actually superior to the tundra/sequioa especially when off-road (Low Gear, high gear are also included), and I've also said that the tundra also has technology the one on the LC300 but not as good as the LC300 especially for off-road capabilities, and it looks like the tundra and sequioa also have a solid axle at the rear suspension (hence the 3rd row is narrower and taller). Maybe some people say that why the Lx600/LC300 which is categorized as a full size suv is narrow, because they use a solid axle and a fairly short wheelbase to support their offroad capabilities.
You should be sitting closer to the steering wheel....moving your seat back further than what you should be at and complaining about having to reach for stuff is asinine.
Hey great review as always guys. Next time you review a Toyota, try to get in contact with The Car Care Nut on UA-cam. He's a master technician at a Toyota dealership in your area. He's very knowledgeable. I think you guys could work really well together.
Toyota and Lexus are very intelligent. They let their whole lineup get ALMOST to the point where they look so outdated that people start to second guess buying them. Then they use all the data and info over the past years of what has worked and hasn't worked for the other manufacturers and use that information to redesign their vehicles. It is definitely a winning strategy in my book. As a consumer, I never feel like if I buy a new toyota or lexus vehicle, then it will be outdated looking in a year or two because they've released 15 new models and redesigns like some other car manufacturers (**cough** KIA\Hyundai). I just can't afford to upgrade that fast. When I buy a new vehicle, I want it to look new (as in not look like an older model) as long as possible. Otherwise I would just buy used. I just REALLY hope that Toyota doesn't look at Kia\Hyundai's success and start adopting these rapid refreshes edesigns.
I don’t like that Toyota only allows people to option the hybrid in the upper trim levels. I’m sure there’s plenty of people who would like more torque for towing, but don’t want a “luxury” truck. They also dropped the ball by not matching ford with a better onboard power system with their hybrid. 400W max. I think even their minivan has 1500W? And I’m beating a dead horse, but I still can’t get over the fact they finally gave people a locking diff but took away recovery hooks. Amongst some other issues, like not offering front bench seats or making the cab smaller, it just goes to show the truck was an afterthought when they designed this land cruiser platform.
I did a ride and drive at the Philly auto show. I got there early before traffic got nuts and the rep I was with told me to send it. It’s a total understatement saying IT MOVES. Friggin thing chirped 2nd and 3rd. I was thrilled with it overall
Had a 15 Tundra. Took a break with a jag..... i want to go back tundra, but i can't help but leaning towards maverick especially if they release an ST like rumored, or even the new canyon of our comes out good. Or i think there's arguments for basic ram being better. Granted i don't tow, need more of a commuter/ utility vehicle. Bed for light landscaping/ appliances.

Quite often when you see the "new model" pull up next to you, you are like "so cool, gotta go to the dealership and check it out...... Yesterday a 2022 was next to me and my 2019, and I felt no desire....It's bloated, over-styled, dated-looking. Now if it were a standard hybrid and/or on-board generator, I could get past it's looks (I think), put I still prefer my 2019 Platinum.
You just don't like the design. The old tundra looks outdated because it's looked how it's looked for almost 10 years. Toyota is clear they aim for polarizing designs.

One thing thats interesting is as improvements come, they used to take longer. Then they get easier and integrated. But one thing is for sure, there is a lot more to evolve.

I want some cars to copy the "fighter jet cockpit" motif/style that cars like the Lincoln Mark series perfected decades ago. Everything tilted, catered to, and directed towards the driver for his comfort and convenience.

I have a 2015 Tundra 1794 Edition. 180,000 miles on it. I towed over 12,000lbs last week for nearly 70 miles in rural WV. I know I am way over the max towing #'s but I have went way over the recommended #'s since I bought the truck new and it towed like a champ then and it still tows like a champ nearly 8 years later.

Thr new sequoia already falls behind its rivals in space and it’s not even out yet. No sliding middle seats, tight third row, puny cargo space no independent rear suspension anymore

I like this truck overall but I agree that it probably needs 2-3 years of production to iron out any issues, especially that complex looking motor. They nailed the interior - looks very upscale.
This is Toyota, they generally wait a loooooong time before releasing new tech so they have the reliability down.
Lots of QC issues going on at the moment. Not a great start for this generation. Reliability issues as well

What kind of problems off the top of your head?
Forget about fixing it yourself or even by your local mechanic after it is out of warranty. With late path of manufacturers to make sure that things do not last past the warranty period, this cool truck can be a money pit.
Except the turbos are currently eating themselves on the regular.
How regular ? I've never owned a turbo engine and not really sold on them. Toyota will address any problems and they will be resolved. I owned a GM vehicle once that was plagued with problems none of which were recalled. I was finally able to fix all of the problems myself. I traded the GM on a new Camry.
As someone who is 6'9", this Tundra was the ideal choice for cabin size being accommodating to my size while still having room for others. I got my 1794 edition Saturday, and drove 4 passengers around incredibly comfortably, even with my seat all the way back. Also nice on my trim level was a knee back extender, that although it doesnt quite hit my knees, it definitely would for someone shorther than myself. For my arm length, I have zero issue reaching any of the navigating functions of the infotainment system. Hope this is useful for my taller fellow drivers. LOVE THIS TRUCK!

Most of todays V8s with cylinder deactivation are garbage absolute garbage.
They've pretty much ironed out any of the initial issues with the ecoboosts, even then they weren't that problematic. What is your experience "working" on them? The borg warner turbos on them aren't giving out at 50 miles like the Tundras are.

The platinum and 1794 trims are equally as nice as this capstone trim,no need for this capstone trim to exist

May or may not be bulletproof, but it's more useable than the last Toyota infotainment system, which was awful.

Correction, you don't need to removed the cab to get at the turbo to fix the waste gate issue. One person that had the waste gate issues with his truck, stated in his review that the dealership did not lift the cab off, they simple remove one of the front wheel and replace it.
Toyota makes the best hybrid system I think, as they have been able to refine it for years. It will be interesting if in a few years they'll have some kind of Lithium Ion pack for this truck, that could make a big difference in mileage / range and power. I'd like to get one of these, but no way in hell am I just going to order it. I'll wait for crazy town pandemic / supply chains to get back to normal... Even if that takes another few years, I'd rather wait it out. Thanks for the great video, my legs fell asleep while I was on the toilet.

Would love to hear your analysis of the Ford vs Toyota hybrids.
They are both the same basic design with the Ford system helping with fuel economy a bit more on the EPA test cycle. However, for me getting the Ford is a no brainer due to the 7.2kWh plug in the bed. Great for camping or powering a job site. Ford is unmatched in this segment for practicality.

@@trp2413 maybe so. But I think the gains in fuel economy would still be very noticeable, enough to at least give us the option. In the recent fuel economy tests on TFL, it got beat I believe by the ram 5.7 with a nine speed.
Guys, I'm confused. I watched your Sequoia vid yesterday and you pretty much hated the seats/interior. In this truck, you really like the interior and comfort. Are the seats different? I'm really interested in a Sequoia but honestly I'm holding off because I need a long distance tourer/hauler (no family), and trying to see if this Tundra or the Sequoia might work better. Tundra is sooooo overrated. I get it a Toyota and will last well over 180k miles. But tye hybrid still does come short. If it did 24/ highway and 20 city it be so WOW! It does 2 miles better than regular.
Five foot truck box that will make me the man at home depot. Loading up half size sheet rock like a alpha male . The hybrid shows that I sit down to see like a gentleman
JBL and Levinson are just different heads on the Harman Audio hydra, and in the non-automotive space Levinson is positioned way more as a high end amplifier company while JBL is speakers-at all price points and with a big “value” presence but their JBL Synthesis line is $$$$ for proper high end/installation rich-people home theater stuff. Which is a long-winded and confusing way of me saying that it wouldn’t surprise me if the same team at Harman worked on the audio for both cars, and/or if a lot of the underlying tech and equipment is largely the same minus the “JBL” or “Mark Levinson” on the speaker grilles.
I got a powerboost f150, the hybridization seems very similar. There was initially some funkyness with the trans shifting into third initially but after 1k miles it kind of just went away. I assume the shift tables needed time to calibrate. Anyways this toyota seems decent, F150 definitely has better details and refinement in terms of WORK stuff. Toyota looks like it has better attention to detail though. Ford just leaves random zipties and shit from manufacturing all over the truck and is just like ok here you go bud. But overall I think the f150 is winning right now, you can't deny the billions that ford put into it.

A year ago I got a '16 RAV4 hybrid used. While it's ultimately a boring SUV for errands and commuting, I do love the instant torque off the line, although it runs out of steam pretty quick. It's basically FWD, the rears are a separate electric motor with pitiful power, only really good for low speed launch or slippage. It also uses a nickel hydride battery, but the EV mode doesn't have any real speed or range.
I really wanted a RAV4 prime but since I will be living in an apartment with no charger, I'm glad this hybrid tech is going into larger vehicles. Here's hoping for a highlander or 4runner with some serious power/torque and fuel efficiency.

Amazing how hard it seems to get screens right. They're all either too small, too big, not intuitive, has too many functions like HVAC, etc.
Though I get it; the look is "aesthetically pleasing" to keep it symmetrical and not tilt it towards the driver.
I really, really like the Audis and a few other luxury vehicles that have "screens go away now" folding buttons or whatever. Another failure point long term, but sure makes the interior better when the screens arent required.

quality switch gear/knobs/dials will always be superior in use to a touch screen for functions like HVAC.

I agree with everybody. Of our 2 cars, 1 is new and has a screen, the other is old and does not have one. I don't feel like I'm missing anything by not having a screen, other than the 'convenience' of android auto

Not all of them are as tough to work on as this one, and they've been around for years now without many problems.

I understand the need to turbo everything, but who are we kidding, it won't even matter in ten years as everything with be EV. I have driven Toyotas since 1983 and currently own a 2021 Tacoma TRD OR. I agree with you on the V6. I'm a little sketchy on a turbo 4 cylinder but I am interested in a hybrid Tacoma .I wish they would make a Tacoma Prime minus a turbo.

Weird how the interior of this 'truck' is miles ahead of their full sized luxury SUVs like the LX300 and LX600
the interior design in the tundra may look better but the features and offroad capabilities on the LC300 and LX600 are better because both types are indeed the off-road capabilities that are highlighted, even the LC300 besides full time 4WD also gets rear and front div lock + crawl and special suspension, while the tundra gets a hybrid but not a full time 4wd and at least only gets a rear div lock.
This is basically a Lexus pickup.
@@lightshunshine3861 you don't need full time 4wd to go offroad. Youre better off with a selectable 4Low. And I'm sure the tundra has other trims (TRD?) that have at least a rear locking diff.
@@wigletron2846 I think I made the wrong comment (not quite right), I made a mistake that the 4x4 LX 600 and Lc300 systems are actually superior to the tundra/sequioa especially when off-road (Low Gear, high gear are also included), and I've also said that the tundra also has technology the one on the LC300 but not as good as the LC300 especially for off-road capabilities, and it looks like the tundra and sequioa also have a solid axle at the rear suspension (hence the 3rd row is narrower and taller). Maybe some people say that why the Lx600/LC300 which is categorized as a full size suv is narrow, because they use a solid axle and a fairly short wheelbase to support their offroad capabilities.
You should be sitting closer to the steering wheel....moving your seat back further than what you should be at and complaining about having to reach for stuff is asinine.

Hey great review as always guys. Next time you review a Toyota, try to get in contact with The Car Care Nut on UA-cam. He's a master technician at a Toyota dealership in your area. He's very knowledgeable. I think you guys could work really well together.
Toyota and Lexus are very intelligent. They let their whole lineup get ALMOST to the point where they look so outdated that people start to second guess buying them. Then they use all the data and info over the past years of what has worked and hasn't worked for the other manufacturers and use that information to redesign their vehicles. It is definitely a winning strategy in my book. As a consumer, I never feel like if I buy a new toyota or lexus vehicle, then it will be outdated looking in a year or two because they've released 15 new models and redesigns like some other car manufacturers (**cough** KIA\Hyundai). I just can't afford to upgrade that fast. When I buy a new vehicle, I want it to look new (as in not look like an older model) as long as possible. Otherwise I would just buy used. I just REALLY hope that Toyota doesn't look at Kia\Hyundai's success and start adopting these rapid refreshes

Yes on any trim with the premium audio. Can be disabled by the dealer.
I don’t like that Toyota only allows people to option the hybrid in the upper trim levels. I’m sure there’s plenty of people who would like more torque for towing, but don’t want a “luxury” truck. They also dropped the ball by not matching ford with a better onboard power system with their hybrid. 400W max. I think even their minivan has 1500W?
And I’m beating a dead horse, but I still can’t get over the fact they finally gave people a locking diff but took away recovery hooks. Amongst some other issues, like not offering front bench seats or making the cab smaller, it just goes to show the truck was an afterthought when they designed this land cruiser platform.
Why compare a Tundra with a Ram or Ford?

Had a 15 Tundra. Took a break with a jag..... i want to go back tundra, but i can't help but leaning towards maverick especially if they release an ST like rumored, or even the new canyon of our comes out good. Or i think there's arguments for basic ram being better. Granted i don't tow, need more of a commuter/ utility vehicle. Bed for light landscaping/ appliances.

selling my 2022 Tundra Platinum😥. Rattles, no auto 4wd, wind noise is insane, cheap plastic interior, stupid remote start setup, etc. I miss my F150.

Yesterday a 2022 was next to me and my 2019, and I felt no desire....It's bloated, over-styled, dated-looking. Now if it were a standard hybrid and/or on-board generator, I could get past it's looks (I think), put I still prefer my 2019 Platinum.
You just don't like the design. The old tundra looks outdated because it's looked how it's looked for almost 10 years. Toyota is clear they aim for polarizing designs.

One thing thats interesting is as improvements come, they used to take longer. Then they get easier and integrated. But one thing is for sure, there is a lot more to evolve.
Second uglistest truck on the road only surpassed by the 2500 Silverado. So many different panels and looks so chunky like the sculpted it out of playdoh! Gonna be a nightmare to wash and wax since God knows no one uses these for real work anymore...
The hybrid system is perfect for towing, hope it's available on lower trims.

Somehow I keep thinking there will be a variation of the infamous "secondary air injection" failure. The first few years are never as reliable as the last ones.
Now its the passenger side headers cracking witch are are a pia to replace and even harder to find a new one.
