Hi Mike !! Well, you didnt let us down. That is a great idea and a lovely effect. Woodturning is certainly evolving, so many new ideas. Thanks for sharing. All the best.............Andy.
The bowl looks great Mike, that's a good effect. When you mentioned using colour that made me think, you could put one colour on first, then the hot glue and spray over the top like you did with this one. Then when you peel off the glue you would have a different colour showing through.
+Andrew Stevens Thanks Andrew, the method you describe is exactly what I am going to play around with, and see what evolves. Thanks for watching and commenting Take care Mike
A very nice piece Mike, it uses the same basic ideas as say etch resist and the use of masking fluid in watercolour art. A lovely result.Cheers for now.Johnny
+John Cornell hi John, there are many, many ways to achieve the same result, this was just one possibility, that happened to be quite effective. Thanks for watching and commenting. Take care Mike
+Paul Haggett Lol....you may well be right Paul....but...he is much more arty farty than I'll ever be, and I mean that in a nice way :) Thanks for the kind words, on a serious note, I really appreciate them mate. Take care Mike
Super video Mike. The piece looks amazing. I paid to see a woodturning demo recently and it wasn't good to say the least. The guy hardly spoke, he turned something quite simple and gave no explanation of his technique etc. Basically it was just sat watching some guy doing some turning for two hours. I don't want to knock him really, but when you, and all the other fantastic woodturners on UA-cam share things like this for free. We are very lucky.
Thank you Mike for a great decorating idea As it's springtime I hope you remember the old Welsh saying: The time it soon arrives, to sow row upon row of lovely chives. Best wishes, Alan.
+Alan Simpson My pleasure Alan, and thank you, as always, for watching and supporting my channel. I am thinking of starting up a new channel given over to cultivating prize chives, what do you think ;) Take care mate Mike
We used this technique back in the 70s using rubber cement on paper or canvas with inks and paints. It's interesting to see the "new" techniques coming back and being applied to different media. Looks great! Try red on the whole surface-could be a dye- before the glue, then the glue, then the black (or any other combination of colors in pairs, or repeat the process for multi-colored string effects. The options and effects are endless. Thanks for sharing, --Joe
+Joseph Scarborough Hi Joe, I always think that things come full circle....then we start at the beginning again. This idea is not mine originally of course, but it's great fun, and very effective. The colours you mentioned are exactly what I'm going to try, and see how the base colour stands up to the glue heat, I think it will work out just fine.....hopefully. Take care, and thanks for watching Mike
+Mike Waldt If you're going to use a surface finish, try a test piece first to see if the hot glue pulls the base finish off. A dye would not come off for sure and would let some of the grain show through. Just a thought. Hope you'll share the results of your next experiment. Cheers, --Joe
Hi Mike! It reminds me of the work of Jackson Pollock! Really nice and artistic effect and very clever use of the hot glue as a mask! Thanks for sharing my friend! Cheers! Daniel
+Daniel Vilarino Hi Daniel....I don't think Mr Pollack would be happy with me being compared to him, but I thank you anyway ;) Take care my friend Mike
That's a sharp looking bowl Mike . I did that once , but didn't much like picking at the tiny bits of glue , so now I melt wax in the micro . and for me easier to remove then the glue . Just a thought .
A stunning beauty! Belongs in a gallery for sure. I wonder what type of undercoat might stand up to the heat and adhesion of the glue such that there could be a complimentary color rather than the natural wood color in the swirls...two varieties, so to speak.
+Mats Turnings Thanks Mat, we old 'uns need you young 'uns to carry on the craft into the future mate, never forget that :) Thanks for watching, and commenting. Take care Mike
+Erik Anderson It's a fun and effective method Erik, as you say with practice(which I need a lot of), the possibilities are huge. Thanks also for going over to support Alex. Take care my friend Mike
Brilliant Mike, the bowl come out beautiful, I must admit I had my doubts when you first started applying the glue, but yes another great method, I will definitely have a go at this later on this year, Thanks for sharing. Best wishes Harry
+The Little Garden Shed Workshop Thanks Harry, regarding the doubts - you and me both mate ;) Quite pleased with the outcome, and looking forward to playing around with it. Take care Mike
Wow kept us in suspense for so long, really worth the wait. The more I look at it the more it grows on you. I think the final side profile image you have makes the piece look really stunning. Glad you didn't do the inside as it would have been an over kill. Just one extra option, you could use this process to create more of a wide border on the outside rather than the whole base.Great work and thanks for the video. Well done!
+Paul Lockwood Lol Paul - glad you liked the end result. This was just to show a very basic and easy way to use the glue to create an effect. There are limitless possibilities that can be explored, it just gives the idea so people can go away and spread hot glue to their hearts content, knowing that something acceptable will result :) Thanks for watching and commenting mate, appreciate it. Take care Mike
+Tom Stratton Thanks Tom, it's great fun, and not too messy, and above all simple, and you know I love "simple"....lol Thanks for watching mate Take care Mike

+Earl Rumble Hi Earl, it would be a boring old world if we all liked the same things, but thanks for taking the time to watch and comment, I appreciate that my friend. Take care Mike
I really like the possibilities of this technique.....the spray can you used, is that an actual stain? I wonder how this would do with an iron acetate solution (on a suitably reactive wood species)......definately going to have to try something along this line!
+Tim Hyatt Thanks Tim, as yet this is the only method I've tried, but more "messing about" is on the horizon. one thing I have already learned is that paint does lift when the glue is applied and cured, this info is thanks to a comment below. One less thing needed to be tried out :) Take care and thanks for watching Mike
when I saw you drizzling hot glue on such a nice piece I though you were crazy, when I figured out what you were doing whebbyou were painting it I thought it might be ok, when I saw the end results I think you are a genius! I am going to try this myself. very nice idea

Thanks for the heads up on Alex's Channel. Subscribed. Nice method for masking! Have you tried using something like lace fabric or something along those lines?
+AnkleBiter Woodworks Pleasure Alex deserves it. Great idea about the lace, and thanks for watching. My wifes prized lace hankies had better watch out! Cheers Mike
That is just a lovely idea!! I was sure from the picture that you've sprayed the bowl black then used a colored hot glue (which I have some of, including some with glitter in them), but never did it occur to me to use the hot glue as a masking material, I am going to use that and play with it, you do know that :) Thank you for sharing this neat idea with us Mike!! :) Yuval.
+Yuval Lahav Woodturning Thanks Yuval, half the fun is experimenting, I would be interested to know what you come up with - as you are firmly in my list of "arty farty" - and that my friend I assure you is a compliment :) Take care Mike
Hi mike fantastic job as usual I'm slowly watching all your uploads just a question what do you take your pics with and do you have a light box for taking your stills with ? and thanks for sharing keep up the amazing uploads .
Hi Clive and thank you. I use a Canon HC-VX980 for shooting the video, and a Lavalier mic attached for the intros. My trusty Samsung Galaxy mobile phone has been used for the stills since the S6 came out a few years ago about 5 or so I think, now I have the S10 and it is ideal for stills. Take care Mike
Great video Mike! Looks awesome! Surprised to hear that you live so close to me! Where a outs are you? And also you mentioned a local woodturning club? Sounds very interesting.
Thank you Reece, I live in a village just South of Bedford, and Colin had been to Bedford Saw & Tool in Bedford, that have a turning club every Saturday morning. I must add I don't attend, for no other reason than lack of time :). I'll PM you with my mobile, and maybe we can arrange to meet one day soon :) Take care Mike
Nice effect. There must be other batik processes that could be used to good effect on turned wood. Working on fabric you usually use an iron and brown paper to remove the wax - though this could be difficult on a curved piece of wood (!)
+Richard Ball I'm sure there are Richard, this is a fairly "crude" method, but quite effective....and above all great fun! Thanks for watching and commenting. Take care Mike
+Turntastic Wood Designs Thank you. The spray I used is by Chestnut Products here in the UK, I'm not sure if they can ship it overseas, but I would imagine a similar product could be found over your side of the pond :) Take care Mike
+Turntastic Wood Designs Not on this side of the pond, but it is a matte acrylic lacquer if that helps in your search. An automotive store may have that kind of spray. Translating UK products to US is tough sometimes. You can get a can from Amazon(UK) if you're willing to spend £60 ($87) a can to get it here. --Joe
great video man got a new subscriber coming from peter browns channel. if you want the hot glue to come off easier in the future pop the piece in the freezer the hot glue will loose its adhesion.
Mike, I put this in your channel comments as well, but I'm asking for help from anyone ... I cannot find the Chestnut Ebonising spray in the U.S. and it can't be shipped from the U.K. in spray form. Please, what other products will work for this technique that I might be able to use? Is there a colored lacquer or will spray paint work? I LOVE this technique!!! And it's simple enough that even I can do it!!! Thanks!
LilyBean I know it’s a little late and don’t know why he didn’t answer but if your still wondering I would use any surface paint system you care to. It’s just a top coat.
+Tom Murphy I didn't get that with the glue Tom, might be the lacquer, or the light rubbing with the Scotch pad that smoothed it before I noticed . i will check for it next time I do it. Thanks for watching and commenting my friend, you've got me wondering now :) Cheers Mike
That is fantastic Mike, just the sort of thing I like. Thanks for sharing, all the best, Jim. P.S. The Milliput finial turned out a bit rubbish, so probably won't post that video, but have a good one coming.
+Jimson's Stuff Thanks Jim...not an area I venture into much, as you have no doubt seen me say a few times, I don't consider myself to be too arty! Looking forward to your next video too mate :) Take care Mike

Thank you for sharing Mike, I'm going to give it a try on my next bowl.
Hi Jack, it's a fun technique, and the possibilities are endless.

I'll PM you with my mobile, and maybe we can arrange to meet one day soon :)
Take care
Mike

Really like that technique Mike.
Question(perhaps dumb): What are you calling ebonizing spray. It looks like flat or satin black paint. Thanks. JimE
+Jim E
Hi Jim, and thank you. I'm not sure off hand what the ingrdients are, but it's a product from Chestnut here in the UK.

Mike
Nice effect. There must be other batik processes that could be used to good effect on turned wood. Working on fabric you usually use an iron and brown paper to remove the wax - though this could be difficult on a curved piece of wood (!)
+Richard Ball
I'm sure there are Richard, this is a fairly "crude" method, but quite effective....and above all great fun!
Thanks for watching and commenting.

Mike
Very nice. Where can I get that ebonizing lacquer spray?
+Turntastic Wood Designs
Thank you. The spray I used is by Chestnut Products here in the UK, I'm not sure if they can ship it overseas, but I would imagine a similar product could be found over your side of the pond :)
Take care
Mike
+Turntastic Wood Designs Not on this side of the pond, but it is a matte acrylic lacquer if that helps in your search. An automotive store may have that kind of spray. Translating UK products to US is tough sometimes.
You can get a can from Amazon(UK) if you're willing to spend £60 ($87) a can to get it here.

Very nice Mike very nice indeed first time I've seen anything like that kind regards.
+M. Stratton
Thanks Mick.. sorry for the very late response mate.

great video man got a new subscriber coming from peter browns channel. if you want the hot glue to come off easier in the future pop the piece in the freezer the hot glue will loose its adhesion.
+Travis Braxton
Thanks Travis much appreciated, and thanks for the tip too.

Mike i found a distinctive edge between then black laquer and the mask (in my case a stencil)... did you and did you solve it?
+Tom Murphy
I didn't get that with the glue Tom, might be the lacquer, or the light rubbing with the Scotch pad that smoothed it before I noticed .
i will check for it next time I do it. Thanks for watching and commenting my friend, you've got me wondering now :)
Cheers
Mike
That is fantastic Mike, just the sort of thing I like. Thanks for sharing, all the best, Jim.
P.S. The Milliput finial turned out a bit rubbish, so probably won't post that video, but have a good one coming.
+Jimson's Stuff
Thanks Jim...not an area I venture into much, as you have no doubt seen me say a few times, I don't consider myself to be too arty!
Looking forward to your next video too mate :)
