Ok, I'm a retired hardwood floor guy. This video is giving EXCELLENT advice, but he needs to qualify a few things. First, he's talking about no-wax floors which is about 98% of all hardwood (and prefinished and engineered) floors. Second, the Bona product is for WATER-based finishes. I may react with OIL-based finishes. Third, vinegar is an acidic, which is why you only use very little in that big bucket of water. The acid in the vinegar can dull the sheen over time. Using soap can leave a film (like on windows) but it will wipe off. The vinegar or soap should only be used occasionally. Normally (the majority of times) just use water in a spritz bottle, spritz on the floor and wipe off with the microfiber dry mop. And PLEASE, don't use any other products on your hardwood floors. Products like Murphy's cause finishes to delaminate from the wood.
Thank you, I will just spritz water to clean my wood floors , so many opinions on UA-cam and peeps saying vinegar , no vinegar on wood,, just on my vinyl floors with Dawn soap , I was using Mr Clean on vinyl floor
I'm so fucking confuse no Dawn no vinegar no water tell people the right thing because I have the old fashion hard wool floors just shut up you got me confused
Thanks Duffy! I have the Bona kit and just wanted to verify that this was the best way. Your video was almost like watching This Old House, you just need Kevin O'Conner to ask you questions. 😂👍
Well thank you Mr Duffy floors.... You covered so many areas. I'm going on 60. Everything that was taught to me about cleaning and waxing floors was completely wrong. I just moved. My floors are beautiful. I want to keep them that way. For the life of me I couldn't understand why they weren't getting the look they should have. Well after watching this I see where I was going wrong. They use of Pledge, mop and glo, the type of mop I was using. Down to the direction I was mopping in. It all was wrong.
I use thieves oil diluted with water in a spray bottle. I spray my flat mop, never the floor directly. I go with the grain. It dries in seconds. Leaves my house smelling great too.
I have dark hardwood floors and have used those products and it looks good for like an hour when wet but when dry it’s like I never cleaned them very dull looking.
I just watched another video about cleaning the floors and they recommended spraying on the Bona liquid and washing an area and then putting down some paper towels under the Bona mophead and wiping up the Bona while it's still wet because that will lift everything up and your floors stay shiny and clean. Sounds like a great idea to me so that's what I'm going to do. Hope it helps you.
I use bona with spray bottle that's on the new floors but I notice some houses have a more dry old looking wood floors for those I use murphys oil soap with warm water I use the same moping cloth from the bona moping kit I just rinse a lot always taking most of the murphys water out. is a lot of work but those floors look nice when I'm done. If you read on back of murphys oil cleaner it doesnt contains oil this is what works for me
Thank you Chris. With the invention of spin mops now, they wring out so much more; even better than hand wringing, would you recommend one of them for the hardwood? Glenn
I moved from a house with wood floors that we damaged terribly by using one of those floor finish refreshers (Rejuvinate) pushed on TV. It made a mess of my wood kitchen floor and we could not get it off. When I asked I was told it is almost impossible to remove without sanding. I moved and in my new house I am using only Bona floor cleaner with a terry cloth flat headed mop. It works fine and my floors have stayed as they were when we moved in. Stay with Bona or it's equivelant.
Help! Just bought a house with cherry wood floors and used the bona high gloss hardwood floor polish and it looks terrible. It's streaky and I'm worried I may have ruined the wood. Is there a way to remove the product from the wood? Many thanks!
I was using vinegar/water mixture sprayed on my wooden floors with my O'Cedar mop & thought it was recommended but now l read NO WAY bc it's dulling & smeary looking!! That's why my floors look like that now, switching to Bona or something else! Just used plain water spray with my terry cloth O'Cedar & works for now, needs to shine again tho.
Hi. Great tips! Thanks! Wish I would have seen this before I mopped my wood floors (for the last 3 years). 😬 Question: do you recommend the Bona Polish also? Will this product help to rejuvenate the floor without having to buff and reapply polyurethane? Thanks again!
You can use pledge product on the floor just not pledge multisuface cleaner for furniture on the floor . But you can certainly use pledge floor multisurface cleaner since it does not leave a build up like bona does . After using bona floor cleaners it does leave a buildup it has been proven in floor testing. Im.not saying bona isn't any good on floors I just wouldn't use it every time since it does leave a build up after a while. I think it's good to use the correct pledge floor cleaner for your particular floor. And switch back ans forth between the 2 or on natural wood floors using the wood soap for floor that actually clean the floor leaving almost no sent .I also think Murphys oil for floors works well too when you use the correct amount as with any product following the manufacturer guide lines makes for a good job on floors .I see this often wee the home owner thinks the more the better when it's not so... Harming the floor even more.
Hey after mopping with a bona spray mop the floor won’t stay shine. It will shine while cleaning but after the floor drys the floor won’t stay shiny. Will that mean the floor should be burnished or refinished?
I would recommend you have a flooring contractor take a look at your floors. Sounds like they may need t be refinished. Really need to see the floors to better asses what may be needed in your case
Walking on our floors without shoes is disgusting. That's why I'm here, to find out how to clean a badly neglected floor. Looks like what I really need is some TNT.
I've watched several videos on cleaning this type flooring. Everyone seems to have a different opinion, of what and what not to do and use. So my conclusion is don't watch these videos. Ask a flooring company in your area what to do. Especially if you had the floors installed in your home. Ask the installer. In my case I bought a home with this type flooring. So I don't know who installed them. I'm just going to ask a local flooring company what they recommend. I've had enough of the videos with tons of conflicting info .
hello, i have a maple floor in my 1900 kitchen. its under 60 years of linoleum. the problem is that there is tar paper between wood and floor covering. how can i remove that. thank you.
Eric, Do not use the pledge orange oil as it contains a silicon wax base which will be detrimental to future maintenance coatings. Try the Bona Hardwood floor cleaner, or warm water with a small amount of vinegar or mild dish-washing soap with a damp rag, no standing water on the floors.
No wax finishes come in satin (almost no shine), semi-gloss (somewhat shiny) and gloss (very shiny). The bona cleaner isn't really going to add a shine to your floors. However, if you want shinier floors, ask you flooring guy to go to a higher sheen (like from satin to semi-gloss) the next time you get a maintenance coat. You can call him to do that tomorrow if you can't wait.
Suggestion- spray the flat "mop" head not the floor. DO NOT launder the mop head in fabric softener. *shouldn't use that junk anyway, waste of $ , bad for health & clothes (14+ yrs cleaning business owner)🌝
if you have gout, heel spurs, foot fungus, and arch issues, likely you're not going to want to take your shoes off. Nor, frankly, should the homeowner want you go.
Melinda, If your floors look dry then perhaps you would need a buffing and re-coating of polyurethane to add another layer of protection and to revitalize the shine.
I use tennis balls on the table & chair legs.. They do the same EXACT thing, plus they're MUCH cheaper. Just make a slit in the ball, NOT too large and they last for years, plus you can wash them in the washer if they get too dirty. MUCH cheaper !!
Hi, I have the type of floor that is not made with that chemical that keeps that glossy smooth feel of the wood, which means to clean it has become very hard, we used to use oil based cleaning solutions but as it turned out the cleaning solution built up and our floor now smudges like crazy! It looks quite awful to be frank and all I want is an effective solution to keep the floor looking clean and normal. I have been looking all over the internet and many tell to clean it in different ways, some say just use a damp cloth, while others say to use vinegar and water, while others recommend mixing oil based products with water, and I just don't know what the proper solution is. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE someone respond telling me an effective solution to how I can clean these floors!
I make little felt booties for the feet of chairs. They look kinda stupid, but they don't leave glue residue or make nail or screw gouges in the floor. And they are easy to replace at home. Cut a felt circle, cup over the foot of the chair, secure with a rubber band. Voila. If you match the color felt to your chair legs it's less obvious.
Mr. Washington: right. That's why I put the little felt booties on the chair feet. The day I find really good commercial ones that will stay on the furniture I own, I'll use those. I have a few now in the kitchen, but they won't fit my other chair legs.
No, Do not use Murphy's oil soap for cleaning wood floors as it has a wax additive in it. This makes it hard to get the correct bonding of the finish when we are re-coating your wood floors.
A dance studio floor does take a lot of abuse. I would recommend a yearly maintenance of a buffing and re-coating to add another layer of polyurethane for protection. Depending on the wearing of the floor you may need to have the re-coating done more frequently.
Soooo WEIRD ... now the other guy that calls himself a hardwood floor Expert said NEVER USE vinegar on the floors.... then this guy used some... n the other guy used just WATER on a terry cloth rag on a flat mop

What is the best way to remove wax build up from hardwood floors???
At Duffy Floors we use a product called Renovator to loosen the old wax by buffing with steel wool. Then we can apply a new coat of wax to the floors.
What about Pine-sol with vinegar? Is it too harsh a cleaner?
Having mats outside and a floor rug inside is a great idea. So is taking off your shoes. Walking in without taking off your shoes is disgusting.
