All you need to know about this game is that in an interview with the devs it was said that female animators hated Wario at the start for being gross but grew to love him for being "macho".

That say a lot of things and not all of it involves Wario.

14:12 Woolly World is definitely their best game. Every part of the game has a ton of effort and love put into it. The soundtrack is also amazing, with a new track in nearly every level. But then Crafted World came out and was the complete opposite. Such a weird studio

This is my favorite game of all time. I’m only like halfway through the video but I’m forcing myself to watch this so that I can face my nostalgia blindness but oh my god I need you to know how much I hate you LMAO
I actually had to put my face in my hands when you said the ost was forgettable
I will respect your opinions because you do have a lot of great points, but BOY does this hurt my soul. Great video

Yeah he's dead wrong about the soundtrack. I remember the game not being my favorite as far as platformers go but it's far from bad, and the visuals and soundtrack are probably its strongest aspects.

I don't know my dude... I've played most Wario Land games and Shake It! is one of my favourites IF NOT my favourite Wario Land game. I feel this guy is overtly harsh in this video

Incoming giant wall of text, FYI. It's about my thoughts on Wario Land: Shake It! and final thoughts on the state of Wario Land as a whole. For now I'll just say, I'm glad I discovered this channel, that someone who didn't grow up with Wario Land decided to do a deep dive into it and showcase it's qualities in a nuanced way, and I look forward to whatever other videos you make in the future. I hope your channel only gets bigger and more successful from here. Anyway...
It's weird, I loved Wario Land: Shake It! as much as the rest of the Wario Land games, and figured everyone else liked it too. Then, while watching one of PizzaTowerGuy's development streams, I noticed that he (and several other people in the stream) had a less than favorable opinion on it. It seemed that, among Wario Land fans, Shake It! was basically a watered-down Wario Land 4. It's because of that I revisited Wario Land: Shake It! earlier this year... I still liked it, had a fun time with it, and there's definitely a lot I like and appreciate about it, but I can definitely see where people are coming from with it. I feel like the decision to have all the characters and enemies be drawn by hand may have hampered it in this regard, both in terms of what the Wii can store and handle and what they were willing to draw and animate. The game feels a lot slower in comparison to its predecessor in terms of it's movement speed, which is particularly noticeable with the "race to the beginning of the level" segments; Wario has no dash in this game, it can only be gained if you go into a particular machine, and Wario's shoulder bash doesn't pick up that much speed and doesn't carry momentum, plus these "race against the clock" segments don't seem to have that same frantic feel Wario Land 4 has. And my GOD does Wario take his sweet-ass time climbing up those latters, SHEESH! This is where the animation really starts to hamper the game, they had to meticulously draw Wario stepping on to each individual step on that latter, which compared to how quick and snappy Wario was when climbing ladders in the previous games just makes me want to grab Wario by the overalls and go "YO HURRY THE FUCK UP! REMEMBER WHEN YOU SAID 'HURRY UP' IN THE PREVIOUS GAME? TAKE YOUR OWN ADVICE!!" The animation and design choice also result in Wario losing a lot of that cartoony feel he had in the previous game; this game only has around 4 transformations in this game, and aside from Flaming Wario and maybe Frozen Wario, none of them really show off the goofier side of him. Wario in general feels a bit stiff and rigid compared to how he was squashed, stretched, blown up, and everything in between in the previous games. I feel like this was not just a restriction of the animation, but also a deliberate design choice by the developers. There's this one interview a lot of Wario Land fans like to point to regarding Wario's characterization, particularly in contrast to how Wario has been reduced to little more than a fart joke in certain games, where Tadanori Tsukawaki wanted to make a "macho Wario" and have the animators emphasize his "manly traits". And yeah, sure, Wario being kind of a badass who bashes through enemies and takes down thugs twice or thrice his size, that's something I've missed from Wario games, particularly once Nintendo started focusing on WarioWare, but at the same time, while I never much cared for the toilet humor associated with Wario, I do feel like this game emphasizes one appeal of Wario at the expense of abandoning another core appeal of Wario. Part of what makes Wario appealing from Mario, or even Donkey Kong for that matter, is that he's allowed to be strange and weird in ways mainstream Mario or Donkey Kong games aren't and often can't be. Wario may be physically strong, but he's crude, sleazy and unsavory. I feel like that same interview also tapped into this aspect of him with Tsukawaki saying "he's so uncool that he ends up being extremely cool". Again, I feel like WarioWare really taps into this aspect of Wario, but the sad thing is that Wario Land used to be able to show off both aspects of Wario effectively. As it stands, Wario Land: Shake It! is a fun game with unique challenges to it, but it does feel "lacking" in comparison to the games that came before it.
Having said that, there are a lot of things I really love about Wario Land: Shake It! that, while it is subjective as to whether or not you like it or think it's appropriate for a Wario Land game, I just love regardless of any of that. I always associate Good-Feel with with incredible presentation when it comes to games, always having excellent visuals and equally excellent, if not moreso, music (at least up until Yoshi's Crafed World, anyway), and Wario Land: Shake It! is no exception. I love this game's soundtrack, all the songs are phenomenal, and I also kind of like how they managed to make a full song out of Wario's victory theme from Super Smash Bros. Brawl which didn't seem to be from anything in particular when Brawl came out. And yeah, while the animation is rather restrictive (particularly where Wario's concerned), I still appreciate the detail that went into animating everything by hand, and I still really like the animated cutscenes in this game. I also really love that Captain Syrup came back in this game, even if it's mostly in just a supportive role and ultimately gets the better of Wario in the end. Wario being completely uninterested in rescuing the ruler of this dimension and only being in it for the money is a detail I always loved and applied to Wario for a good long while, like he's "not distracted by the sexy" (something I realized wasn't completely true, given some of the endings to Virtual Boy Wario Land). The Shake King is kind of a boring villain, though at least we get more of him than we do the Golden Diva, and I actually think it's fascinating how he's basically an "evil counterpart" to Wario, having all of Wario's abilities but being bigger and more outright evil compared to Wario, which is ironic considering Wario was originally an evil counterpart to Mario.
All-in-all, it's a shame this had to be the last Wario Land game before the series went dormant, considering almost none of the people who created Wario or made the Wario Land series what it was were involved with this game, or if they were it was in a very limited capacity. It would have been nice to at least have the last game in the series be an embodiment of what worked best about it and why it and Wario in particular are so unique and fun. Instead it feels like a slight step backward from Wario Land 4 that only bothers to highlight one aspect of Wario instead of the full package. Worse yet, Nintendo seems so content to just have WarioWare be Wario's main outlet and otherwise too restrictive to really let loose and do something weird in the same vein as Wario Land 4 or the previous Wario Land games. It's also disappointing that they seem completely uninterested in the series otherwise, like how an indie dev pitched them a modern-day remake of Virtual Boy Wario Land and they rejected it. At the very least we can find solace in a number of indie devs taking inspiration from Wario Land to make their own games, in particular with Pizza Tower (which finally has a release date, Hell yeah) and Summitsphere with Antonball Deluxe and now ANTONBLAST, as well as games that clearly have Wario Land inspirations like Treasure Tech, Shovel Knight: King of Cards, Duke Dashington and Tembo the Badass Elephant. Sure, they might not all be great or even all that good, but it still makes me happy to see this big fat weirdo has also touched the lives of so many game developers. Even if we don't get another Wario Land game anytime soon, I still look forward to seeing more Wario and Wario-inspired goodness in the future.

@@Rubberman202What you said explains why Wario will always be overshadowed by Metroid despite the latter lagging behind in terms of number of games released. Also, Nintendo ruined the Wario Land series thanks to allowing a shovelware company to do an original Wario platformer on the DS.

Similar feelings here. I completely understand the dislike for shake it after playing wl1, even if I still like the game. Alot of that crunchy personality the previous games had in every regard is for the most part nonexistant here, in place of whatever goodfeel thought would feelgood.
Imo, your opinion on this game sorta relates to how you view warioland as a series. If you just found this game and have no attachment to warioland or otherwise don't care about how much subsequent games abandon mechanics and stuff, it's a fun hidden gem that'll make you wonder why nintnedo didn't continue the series. I don't think thats a bad mentality either, I'm in the same camp after all. But if your a big fan of the series and formulated your thoughts on each game, appreciating every feature they had to offer, and then you play this game...you get something similar to this video.

This game is so underrated while it not as weird as other wario land games it still has some weird things to it and if wario land 1 can be loved without reactions than I don’t see how this game is any different while I don’t agree with your opinion it was still a great video dude. Keep it up.

good vid, but i disagree with what you said about Land 4's ost, i dont think its forgettable at all alot of tracks i can still remember and the way they constantly mess with the sound design i think really helps it stand out

I don't disagree, when I was excited for Wario Land: Shake It! I was coming off of playing Wario Land 4, and it feels like a more watered down Wario Land, like instead of taking a step forwards, it took more steps back in what really defined the Wario Land games. I felt the other Wario Lands like 2 and 3, when I got to try them for the first time had more charm to them compared to Shake It!

I think my biggest disagreement with this review is that the soundtrack is unremarkable. It isn't a cream of the crop soundtrack that you'll be listening to for years to come like Pizza Tower, Freedom Planet 1 & 2, Gravity Circuit, many Sonic games, etc. but it's a great one.
Not every track is a banger, but the majority of the soundtrack is great. Just off the top of my head Stonecarving City, Just Plains, Mt. Lava Lava, Savannah Valley, Stonetooth Cave, Its All Mine, Glitter Town and Windbreak Bay are all bops. They aren't samey either, they range from Jazzy to Funk to Rock.

I really liked all your wario land stuff. Very funny and informative, but doesn't feel pretentious or just a massive cope for enjoying a shitty game. Also not too bloated, I swear half of these video essays are like an hour then I stop at 20 minutes and realize I should do something else with my time besides watch some dude repeat his point 50 times talking about castlevania.
