that bit towards the end of summarizing the entire video backwards is the funniest and smartest bit of video essay writing style I have seen in a long time. honestly 10/10 video. love your style man, your scriptwriting is so good! Also I went to work half way through watching the video, had a full eight hour shift, came home, found out there is pizza in the fridge, popped off, sat down to my computer with pizza in hand and got Pizza Tower jumpscared. man really good thoughts on pizza tower sure was a lot of them that is for sure and nothing else in particular.
I don't know, I think Pizza Tower can be "Wario-like" while being it's own unique thing. I realize how reductive that kind of sounds, but people are going, subconsciously or not, to draw similarities of games they play to games they've previously played, whether that was the intent behind the game's design or not. Comparing games to each other is a good way of demonstrating how each of them work and I think that's a perfectly valid way to analysis something. That being said, I completely understand resisting the urge to do that, since people do default into saying something is a "rip-off" or "knock-off" of this or that game just because of its perceived similarities. In that respect, I also can understand the impulse to insist that Pizza Tower is its own unique thing and to completely divorce Wario Land from the discussion in order to try and avoid that, even though I kind of feel intellectually dishonest doing so. After all the blurb on Pizza Tower's own Steam page outright says "Pizza Tower is a fast paced 2D platformer inspired by the Wario Land series", and if the developer is okay with that comparison, I feel like other people should be to. I just started watching the video and I intend to watch the whole thing, but I thought I'd get that out of the way first. As much as I loved your Wario Land stuff, I'm looking forward to what kind of videos you'll make after this point. Edit: Wait... Oh... I think I see what's happening with this video.
It is genuinely amazing how this is both a complete meme but also genuinely, somehow, actually works it's way back into an analysis of Pizza Tower, in obvious and subtle ways. After the bit in the tutorial you'd think it's just complete nonsense but most of the major points brought up actually work back in, to the point where if you've spent 200 hours in the game like me, you keep hearing things that sound like they're segues right back into the game. Hi-Fi Rush has annoying tutorials and struggles with a half-hearted presentation that has passion, but no real substance? Pizza Tower has a perfect tutorial and wears its influences while still being it's own complete self, it doesn't just slap the skin of a cartoon on it and runs with it, it IS the cartoon with gameplay that matches the manic energy of one. While you can mark it's influence in 90s cartoons, nobody can directly point to one as inspiration, unlike Hi-Fi where you can tell the exact market it's appealing to. Peppino, Pepperman, The Noise, Mr. Stick, these guys have ZERO words but their personalities stick out greater than the annoying dialogue that Hi-Fi assaults you with like a needle into a toddler Stephen King's ear. (That's a joke for my REAL literary kings.) Pizza Tower knows what it is, it is inspired by Wario Land and wears it upfront, but it ascends that comparison, and the only reason people compare it to Sonic is that we haven't really gotten a 2D platformer like this. You know what I'd ACTUALLY compare it to? Mario 64. That game only requires you to really understand Mario's basic moveset, and there's a ton of unnecessary tertiary abilities that only exist to make traversing the environment more comfortable, just like in Pizza Tower, just with the speed cranked up and in a more linear setting. Your first time playing either Mario 64 or Pizza Tower is going to be vastly different compared to your second, fifth, tenth, moreso than most games because there's so much to master. However there are SOME comparisons to Sonic, and that's demonstrated perfectly in the segments talking about his control. Pizza Tower doesn't have a boost button or a spin dash, the closest it has is an advanced technique that requires you to grab, then crouch, and hold the Dash button in order to get to Mach Speed quicker, which even then requires skill to use and understand where it's best utilized, similar to Sonic's toolkit in Adventure 2. Speedrunning Pizza Tower has a lot of moments similar to the Final Rush skip, where using your moveset right can let you blaze through a stage that most first timers would bump through like a confused blind dog. The rail grinding even follows the no automated rule, you can't speed up while on a rail, you have to carry your momentum to it. And even later in the video, "Extra Design" is prevalent all over Pizza Tower. There are a ton of little touches like Vigilante getting annoyed if you wait too long to pick up the gun, the Pizza Tower Guy hidden in all of the levels as a bonus for going fast, hell using Lap 2 to go back down to a pit you couldn't cross to find a drunk Pizza Tower Guy, clicking Peppino to attack him on the main menu, the Bacon Room, there's so much love packed into the game and there was literally no reason for half the additions. The escape sequence bit...I mean do I have to explain it? It's kinda spelt out, although (and this is completely insane speculation now) the way that you skip through certain games and take new routes, adding in a talk about Bomb Rush Cyberfunk actually mirrors the escape sequences of Pizza Tower, how they open up new passageways and close off old ones, it's not a linear back to front. The final point of the video, the one that was touched on earlier but went through backwards again in the escape sequence, mirroring the retracing your steps of Pizza Tower, is once again the difference between inspiration and imitation. Pizza Tower is a love letter to Wario Land, but it goes past the appeal of those games by taking the core DNA and injecting it with something entirely new. In core moveset, the only things taken from Wario Land are the Mach Dash, which behaves extremely differently from the dash in Wario Land 4, the ground pound, which is fairly similar but feels very different to use, and the ability to pick up and throw things, which again behaves extremely differently. They didn't need to incorporate the shoulder bash into the core moveset (there's like one place it's used and it's in a completely different context, it's used as a way to stop a Super Jump early and turn into a Mach Dash.) There isn't a point where Peppino puts a yellow cap on and goes "Erm, no, that's not working out" and then throws it aside and turns on his terrible 80s pop playlist that's just a randomly picked Rick Astley song that isn't Never Gonna Give You Up, Everybody Wants To Rule The World 5 times and the 80s rock song that was made for the Teen Titans GO! episode 40%, 40%, 20%. The game just is what it is. I love it. And through a completely ass-backwards way, you made me remember why I do. This is a great and hilarious video. Sub god damn earned.

Honestly great pizza tower vid. Most of the comments are like “haha click baited but it was great anyways” but most of the things you talked about in the other games apply to pizza tower as well . Like it hit me while you were talking about how bad sonic feels to control in frontiers is a direct contrast to how intentionally designed pizza towers movement system was to make it feel as good as it is. Most of the people who saw the wario retrospective probably has either played or watched someone play pizza tower and see how good it is for themselves so going in depth about how other games can fail at what pizza tower gets right is a much more fun and engaging look at it.
I really enjoyed this video much more than I expected! You ended up talking about so many things in the gaming industry/design that I think many people take for granted. Also there was such a big variety of things that you talked about, but you managed to transition to everything cohesively and make it all interesting. Keep this up! I think you recognize the value of a lot of games and pieces of media that people tend to overlook
The fact you still had your own style while also completely playing off Running Shine is hilarious. This video is a hell of a trip, amazing work. You deserve so much more attention.
People keep saying he's like Running Shine but I don't see it. To begin with, RS doesn't even particularly stand out among the many other laid back informal style game review and retrospective channels so I'm not sure what the big deal is. His sub count is on the low side too so it's not like he's the top dog in this genre.
to me it's just because he was the first one I found, so every joke that sounds like one he'd make sounds like his joke, even if he didn't come up with it first
@@Diwashoyeah, what’s up with people constantly comparing this style of review to running shine? He didn’t pioneer it, he just happened to make them a bit before the more popular ones like Lute. All these guys are really different in their presentation and personality (Lute is personal and emotional, AP is aggressive and passionate, etc etc) and putting them all under the umbrella of “the guy who did it ‘first’ probably” just feels disingenuous
Ohhhhh, I get it. The point is that to reduce Pizza Tower down to “Wario but more” Is to ignore all the thought and effort that goes into a work that builds on everything that came before it. One single game isn’t going to be the source of all the ideas in another, even if it really was a spiritual successor.
What a great video! The way you talk about everything that went into it's design made so intriguing, that I think this is what's gonna get me to actually play Pizza Tower
I have never seen it's pizza time adapted so well, and I wasn't expecting it after clicking your channel from lute only to find what I thought was a dead channel, earned a sub
I just knew that in my second guessing heart that this is how I would of picture Automatic Pause would do a Pizza Tower Retrospect, and honestly I kinda like it. I mean this is got to be his clickbaitiest works and put the game to the "Wario Land 3" treatment (which I've beat and is my new favorite wario land game) and rambles off about game like High Fi Rush, Jet Set Radio, Sonic Frontiers, Resident Evil 4, and Devil May Cry, it shows that he can catch people like me attention for games that I didn't even know or play, and dumps on the shits that he suppose to talk about. Like in the Wario Land Retrospect he did it too like multiple times and I really enjoyed that because it like a little break for all of the criticism and shit like that. But in a whole it doesn't set it back to say that this is a great video and I'm really hoping that what else you put out for us!
i enjoyed this video but it has that subtle stench of an out of season april fool's joke but hey, it's more automaticpause goodness so i don't think i should complain that hard edit: AP talks about pizza tower at 50:00 if you're impatient and don't care about a good content creator (just watch the whole video and pretend it's not titled after pizza tower please i beg)
You’re style of editing and just talking in general in the Wario Land Series Retrospective was something I really enjoyed, so I’m excited to watch this video and hope you garner more attention overtime

this video somehow makes for a great pizza tower review despite barely talking about the game itself. if you pay attention, you can find that each topic in the video ties back into pizza tower without ever saying the name.
I watched this expecting to get a pizza tower review, instead i got a tear down of Hi-Fi Rush out of nowhere. I honestly don't know what to expect from you now.
I just wanna say i think this video is fucking genius. the way you rambled on about shit you like or dont like in other games, only to wrap it all back around to actually talking about Pizza Tower is fucking brilliant imo. im leaving it intentionally vague so i dont ruin it for others who havent finished the video but the way you brought it full circle in the format of the video is soooo fucking good. so far you have yet to miss, AutomaticPause
This vid really goes in depth about pizza tower, many of the things mentioned never even crossed my mind while playing. Not a second in this video isn’t talking about pizza tower, very worth while 👍🏻
What do you mean? He talks about it quite a bit! At least 50 minutes of it and a few other things. I am forgetting what those other things are to be honest. It kinda reminds me of Ghost Trick, Phantom Detective, actually. Game was made by the series director for the Ace Attorney series and you can really just feel it. About this bizarre little guy, immediately off the bat there, damn, boom, dead. Rather odd fellow! Have to go throughout this world saving people to eventually figure out who you are because you also somehow forgot everything in the process. Best puzzle game in the last 20 years bar none. Peak fiction. You know, who don't more pieces of media start off with odd ball guys that are just dead right off the bat anyway? Kinda reminds me of this little show called Columbo, real old one, from the 60s --
he actually does, it’s just that he’s essentially comparing and contrasting design elements of pizza tower through talking about other games. for instance, hi fi rush has bad tutorials and fake style? pizza tower has a great tutorial and is full of style.
Wow I'm surprised! Automatic pause is a Pikmin 4 truther I did not expect that. This video is a great retrospective on Pikmin and yes I do agree 3 and 1 for life and 2 does have good characters.
This was a genuinely fantastic video. I love that you managed to talk about so many games whilst managing to stay on subject. The time limit near the end actually got me stressed out!
I enjoyed the video thanks. Taught me some aspects of games I didn't realize plus the free natured style made it cool not knowing what point was gonna be made next. :)).
You know, while im generally never that upset with these "Bait n Switch" type videos, i just kinda end up leaving immediately after i realize what is going on. Yet somehow you managed to retain me for 50+ minutes. that's impressive.
I find them quite annoying to be honest, if he wanted to talked about Hi Fi rush that should have been the title, retrospective on hi fi rush, we don’t even get thoughts on the game.
@@radiokunio3738 I don’t think it’s really that refreshing honestly, if he wanted to talk about it then he should have put hi fi rush on the title and thumbnail, it just doesn’t feel great.
1:10 "I've played it 10 times over at this point and have started running the any% category, which has been a lot of fun." 49:43 "I dunno, I didn't even play it, I- I - like, turned it on once bcuz I borrowed off my friend on Steam but.... I didn't even beat the game... i dunno.... It looks cool? uuuhhh" One of these is a bold faced lie, while I'd assume the latter is false, I can't say 100% for certain. why does this guy fucking do exactly what i do whenever something that doesnt even closely relate to pizza tower is said but pizza tower is brought to mind because of the word 'noise' for example kinda like right here 10:15
Honestly being able to talk about a piece of media by talking about other media tangentily related to it is genuinely impressive. That and how it fits in with the general message regarding how shallow inspiration should be avoided and you should look deeper to iterate on work not only applies to pizza tower and it's many influences but also you. You parodying running shine's video essay rambling style to a ridiculous degree and spinning it into your own thing is really clever. Apolgies if i'm kinda explaning the joke but this is one the fascinating video i've seen in a long time.
gotta say i really do appreciate your side tangents in your videos, im so down to listen to you talk about whatever, whether that be picross or fuckin god hand or whatever
one of the funniest, most unhinged video essays i've watched in recent memory. i utterly adored it and had a dumb smile on my face almost the entire time. however, you lied about being gay so i am unfortunately forced to call this the worst video ive ever watched

You know, just because you *can* write the script drunk with ADHD and following every stray thought that comes to your head doesn't mean you *should,* especially when you spend nearly a quarter of that time complaining about Hi-Fi Rush having good UI and likeable characters as if that's a bad thing for some reason. And no, recognizing that Secret Rings and Black Knight are good games won't save the video. That's like putting a Band-Aid on an amputation.
Forgot this was a pizza tower vid and was genuinely addicted to the hifi review. Then i heard pizza tower for the first time in about an hour and realized how bamboozled i got
Finally someone who understands the Yakuza series isn't meant to be dark and serious, like the only game that has a serious and tense atmosphere is the first one, ever since Yakuza 2 they started making it more like a J-Drama
Dude, idk how the fuck you did this but I love the way you effortlessly talk about each topic, you don't come off as stilted or stammer about, you come off as if this is was on the fly but just as planned; I need to fucking know how you do it, god damn.
As someone who has seen entirely too many youtube videos about videogames (and had a constant itch to make my own) this video is downright fantastic. Tying every single one of these smaller vignettes back to Pizza Tower's design is as entertaining to watch as I'm sure it was fun to produce. Btw, what's your favorite Running Shine video?
This is such an underrated video as an editor for my school editing is hard af and this is rlly impressive Im halfway through and i odnt know where the Retrospective is Welp i finished the vid amd im questioning if im high heh probably but i have to say phenomenal vid this got me jokes aside sorry for the hate this video has been getting some ppl take jokes too seriously
Really excellent video. Would you call me gay if I said it's kinda avant garde. Probably. I'd call someone gay if they said something I made is avant garde. Also, I thought it was really funny how you opened the video talking about how annoying it is when people only talk about games in the context of similar games and then proceeded to do that for the whole video.
okay this video was unhinged but i loved it and prob will remember it in a few years but f you how dare you take a corner of my brain with memorable content
17:26 You might be the only other person saying this. Like there are so many projects nowadays that are "inspired" by Spider-Verse but are using cool techniques for the wrong reasons. Like that new Puss in Boots movie is fine but what is the point of making it look choppy at arbitrary moments? It doesn't make sense just because it's "cool" or was used well in another project
I think it didn't hurt the movie in any way. It gave fights certain impact, that was enjoyable to watch. To me, something being cool is a good enough reason to implement something (case sensitive ofc), a motive is a plus.
@@MatiasLikesGamesI would have welcomed it if it were like that for fight scenes in their entirety but they straight up turn it on and off almsot completely at random even in the middle of fights. I’m just wondering why not commit to it instead of flip flopping

It genuinely looks great when the motion is smooth but then it gets choppy without stylizing it

But in a whole it doesn't set it back to say that this is a great video and I'm really hoping that what else you put out for us!
i enjoyed this video but it has that subtle stench of an out of season april fool's joke
but hey, it's more automaticpause goodness so i don't think i should complain that hard
edit: AP talks about pizza tower at 50:00 if you're impatient and don't care about a good content creator (just watch the whole video and pretend it's not titled after pizza tower please i beg)
You’re style of editing and just talking in general in the Wario Land Series Retrospective was something I really enjoyed, so I’m excited to watch this video and hope you garner more attention overtime
17:52 digibro throwing a terror tantrum over anime adaption of golden wind's art style will never not be funny. You're a true man of culture to reference such a classic moment in youtube history.
I still remember the time where he was digibrony.
@@Rubberman202he was banished quicker from the community then toonctitic was and that bastard was a pdf file. Digi was Too cringe for even the bronies to handle.
holy shit digibro is losing his mind over nothing, I thought part 5 had the best style
Oh boy, I love Pizza Tower! This will be a fun video! 🙂
i need more. this has opened my eyes.
this video somehow makes for a great pizza tower review despite barely talking about the game itself. if you pay attention, you can find that each topic in the video ties back into pizza tower without ever saying the name.
I watched this expecting to get a pizza tower review, instead i got a tear down of Hi-Fi Rush out of nowhere. I honestly don't know what to expect from you now.
took me 20 minutes before I realized this wasn't a Pizza Tower vi-
I mean uh, great Pizza Tower Retrospective AP, keep it up
this truly is one of the pizza tower retrospectives of all time
One of the most incredible retrospectives quite unlike any other I'd see on UA-cam
Not a second in this video isn’t talking about pizza tower, very worth while 👍🏻
>title video Pizza Tower Retrospective
>dont actually talk about Pizza Tower
Honestly not sure how i was surprised that you werent gonna talk about pizza tower in ur pizza tower video but great vid man
Wow I'm surprised!
@@TheodoreNoisesI don't know it refreshing in a masochistic way.
@@radiokunio3738 I don’t think it’s really that refreshing honestly, if he wanted to talk about it then he should have put hi fi rush on the title and thumbnail, it just doesn’t feel great.
@@TheodoreNoises Bend over we're talking about Hi Fi Rush, the safe word is Pizza Tower.
One of these days someone's going to make a "retrospective" for a game like a week after it comes out. I know it.
1:10 "I've played it 10 times over at this point and have started running the any% category, which has been a lot of fun."
49:43 "I dunno, I didn't even play it, I- I - like, turned it on once bcuz I borrowed off my friend on Steam but.... I didn't even beat the game... i dunno.... It looks cool? uuuhhh"
One of these is a bold faced lie, while I'd assume the latter is false, I can't say 100% for certain. For all I know, this really could be a total jebait.
great pizza tower video, im glad you talked about high five rush
I never thought I'd ever be so okay with being clickbaited.
why does this guy fucking do exactly what i do whenever something that doesnt even closely relate to pizza tower is said but pizza tower is brought to mind because of the word 'noise' for example kinda like right here 10:15
Best 50 minutes of watching a shitpost retrospective I've spent yet.
This was the best clickbait I have ever experienced.
This video has almost less pizza tower in it than automatic pause has teststerone in his blood.
That was actually shockingly cohesive. I really thought you were going to bring it back around by the end there and tie it all together.
this video has big "watch while youre high" energy, saved for later
Amazing video, cant wait to see even more from you!
This has to be the best pizza tower video ive ever seen, nice deep cuts btw!
YAYYYY NEW VIDEO
This vid is like 50% Matthewmatosis Mega Microvids and 50% 2007 4chan edgelord humor
I love John Pizza Tower.
9:00 you completely cooked Chai and licked the plate clean haha I love this
Bomb threat man, it has to be a bomb threat
Buddy ol pal, you've done it once again
I'm a man of my word.
gotta say i really do appreciate your side tangents in your videos, im so down to listen to you talk about whatever, whether that be picross or fuckin god hand or whatever
thank you for this very detailed and insightful pizza tower video
one of the funniest, most unhinged video essays i've watched in recent memory. i utterly adored it and had a dumb smile on my face almost the entire time.
however, you lied about being gay so i am unfortunately forced to call this the worst video ive ever watched
What makes you say I lied about being gay?
@@automaticpause after long deliberation i have come to the conclusion your content is chaotically gay enough that ill just let you have the title of "honorary gayass," the greatest honor i can bestow.
I have no intention of further questioning you, for I am not your enemy.
(Also the video still kicked ass)
im lute and i approve this messag e
Truly an enigma of a video. I got halfway through before realizing I hadn't absorbed nor understood a single word of it. Great Stuff
this is the greatest hi-fi rush retrospective ever made
You know, just because you *can* write the script drunk with ADHD and following every stray thought that comes to your head doesn't mean you *should,* especially when you spend nearly a quarter of that time complaining about Hi-Fi Rush having good UI and likeable characters as if that's a bad thing for some reason.
And no, recognizing that Secret Rings and Black Knight are good games won't save the video. That's like putting a Band-Aid on an amputation.
Ive been following this game since February 2022, it was so exciting finally seeing it come out
been waiting for more of your work bro i love the feel of the early youtube video game reviewer you bring, keep it up man i love this.
Forgot this was a pizza tower vid and was genuinely addicted to the hifi review. Then i heard pizza tower for the first time in about an hour and realized how bamboozled i got
Didn't expect this to become a Running Shine styled microvideos video
Finally someone who understands the Yakuza series isn't meant to be dark and serious, like the only game that has a serious and tense atmosphere is the first one, ever since Yakuza 2 they started making it more like a J-Drama
Dude, idk how the fuck you did this but I love the way you effortlessly talk about each topic, you don't come off as stilted or stammer about, you come off as if this is was on the fly but just as planned; I need to fucking know how you do it, god damn.
Is this going to "WOW IT WENT FULL CIRCLE"
Mister Pause really committed to the idea to make it so NOONE can comment about Wario.
The is the best chain of tangents on youtube
This Video is probably a great Representation how it must feel to talk to me about Videogames i enjoy
Not good enough. Make a 10 hour retrospective on Rusty's real deal baseball
Peak bait actually liked what talked about here
Love my dollar store Ruinning Shine youtuber. Very cool video love the game and your review 👍
This is one of the best clickbait videos I’ve seen
This video goes in circles, like a pizza, tower
As someone who has seen entirely too many youtube videos about videogames (and had a constant itch to make my own) this video is downright fantastic. Tying every single one of these smaller vignettes back to Pizza Tower's design is as entertaining to watch as I'm sure it was fun to produce. Btw, what's your favorite Running Shine video?
Either THUG or Sonic Adventure. Thank you btw!
This is such an underrated video as an editor for my school editing is hard af and this is rlly impressive
Im halfway through and i odnt know where the Retrospective is
Welp i finished the vid amd im questioning if im high heh probably but i have to say phenomenal vid this got me jokes aside sorry for the hate this video has been getting some ppl take jokes too seriously
Came for pizza tower, and then realized it’s a Hi Fi rush review.
And a re4 vid and a sonic adventure 2 vid and...... a sonic frontiers vid
Super happy we got some fresh content from you, keep it up homie
“Oh they just…keep going… no no im enjoying this actually hold on… oh okay this is sick actually”
Not sure how to feel about a video that references Minus8, Mr Anime and Grandma's kisses all in one go
I feel like I watched an indie art film, as in I think I get it, but not really.
Really excellent video. Would you call me gay if I said it's kinda avant garde. Probably. I'd call someone gay if they said something I made is avant garde.
Also, I thought it was really funny how you opened the video talking about how annoying it is when people only talk about games in the context of similar games and then proceeded to do that for the whole video.
this pizza tower video is my favorite sega company retrospective
okay this video was unhinged but i loved it and prob will remember it in a few years but f you how dare you take a corner of my brain with memorable content
Looks like shit whenever the style is "on" too.
@@automaticpause Like there was one scene where a bunch of goons were charging into battle and they straight up had like YIIK walk cycles it just looked unfinished. I kinda feel like a bit of an asshole when I point that out specifically but it was clearly done on purpose and it's just like, why? It genuinely looks great when the motion is smooth but then it gets choppy without stylizing it
art
This is certainly a video about pizza tower
This is the longest fifty minute video ive ever seen and you knownexactly why. But i cant stop watching.
This video made me hate myself and question life decisions, and for that I thank you
i made sure to play all of pizza tower before watching this
So you have went full running shine
I appreciate it
The Most Pizza Tower Retrospective
25:53 I don’t know if it’s because I’m tired, but the words “ ANTI-MASTURBATION CROSS” is the funniest thing I have ever heard
I can't believe it took me 11 minutes to figure it out.
bro i totally agree with you regarding all of hi fi rush but i also strong disagree when it comes to "judging pizza tower on its own merits" like gen alpha isnt already doing that. you are allowed to reference pizza tower, like that one time you referenced the level names in wario land 4
i take that back BRO I SHOWED THIS TO MY FRIEND STOP WHY DID YOU MAKE A SANDY HOOK JOKE
