I LOVED ALL OF THEM! But I will say that my favorite is the 2nd and 3rd ones that you did because the colors just popped and spoke to me more~ Beautiful work😁🖌🎨💛
I like the female drawing more only because the way you drew her facial features she almost looks like the type of female you'd see in a Renaissance painting and I love that.
Its ok if your sponsored, don't work for Free Bestie! Not only should they have sent you the products to review but also payed you for your time to film and edit this video. You can still give an honest opinion because this is a review after all. Don't let them get free promo and make money off you it says a lot about a company that does this. We love you and your craft!!
Im im a completely different genre of art than you. But I find your color choices and the smoothness and shapes you have in your drawings to be totally study worthy. I am obsessed. Ive used oil pastels before but what youre able to do with them is so impressive.
This. As I was reading your comment it was almost exactly what I wanted to say. I use different mediums, the genre and my style are vastly different. But his work is incredible. I honestly think doing a study of his work would do me A LOT of good. To get outside my comfort zone, be more loose and expressive, and play with unexpected colors. I actually bought this set of pastels a while ago, so I'll take this as my sign.
I personally believe that someone’s art style really comes from the artists personality. And I think that really shows with you! Your personality is fun and unexpected and so is your art style!
I like these, but not for a whole picture. Because yes, these are STICKY, that is exactly what I thought when I first used them, my goodness are they ever sticky. I also find them quite inconsistent. Many of the colors are nice and creamy and opaque, and then you get some inbetween that are transparent and feel like a glue stick. I like them, and I would buy them again for what they cost, I think they are a really good value, but I do not want to use them just on their own. My favorite oil pastels are Mungyo Soft and Neopastel, which I find very similar to eachother. I like that smooth even type of creaminess. This sticky thing about the Paul Rubens does make things difficult for me. And man, I am glad that someone else has finally mentioned it, because with all these positive reviews, I was feeling like I am the only one who finds that an issue. I like to start out with a harder pastel and then take the Paul Rubens to add the final layer, I think that works really great, but I have not enjoyed doing the full work with the Paul Rubens.
I want you to be aware of the fact that you are the only opinion I trust when it comes to reviews on oil pastels 😂 I'm trying to find a set for my travel sketchbook, and you are the first and only name that comes to mind when it comes to oil pastels. Much love Bean 💙💙💙
I need a print of all three of these because these are too beautiful and cool to not make prints of! I love the colors you use and I really love your imagination to your art! Its so inspirational to me, my channel, and my style~🖌🎨❤😁
I clicked sooooo fast. These were the first oil pastels I ever used and bought. I commented once or twice wanting you to review them because I was undecided. The crumbles were frustrating for me too! but I found if i left the crumbs on for a day or two they seemed to dry out and lose the stickiness so I could brush the piece carefully. With the shiny finish of each piece it just made me more aware of how my fingers were being used so any prints on the piece were done purposefully. Also a q-tip enabled me to smudge in finer detail and some areas honestly I found were best not being smudged AT ALL. I’m AGAIN so glad you reviewed these. The first piece you did was my favourite and the fixident really helped the colours to POP.
Interesting that they could be a dupe for sennelier, might have to try them since that would save me some coin. As always I love your reviews, content, art and personality! ❤
They’re really nothing like sennelier IMO. Sennelier is creamy and these are more sticky, and I actually don’t think they layer well unless you blend them out with your hand or something first like he does in the video
Caroline, Don't bother. I ruined several pictures using them. Literally you finger gets stuck to them, they peel off, flake and aren't worth the 25 they cost.
Can i just say i really appreciate this non sponsored, honest review? I have absolutely no problem with artists accepting sponsorships or products, but it is also refreshing to hear some more open opinions :D
As a non professional it’s so interesting to see the pieces that “don’t work out” because every time you put pen to paper it just blows my mind how talented you are. But I trust your expertise
I really like that last drawing! the blue highlight you put in the underneath of people's noses in your drawings is so satisfying and makes the faces really "pop" to me
Thank you! I've always loved pastels and just getting back into art as an outlet period. Thank you for reviewing all these different pastels so I can pick what's best for me!!! 💖
Genuinely glad I caught this. I've got watercolors from Paul Rubens and I definitely know the feeling of having to just play with them and get used to them. I love them though and I've been curious about oil pastels after getting a Faber Castell set in an art box. Im glad to hear basically the same thing that I heard about their watercolors: mid-ish quality at a good price. Putting these on my amazon wish list right now. P.s. my fave was the flat top boy.
I love seeing both your background art and the art you make for videos. Just your whole vibe is so comforting and encouraging. (I got back into my weird little sculptures after watching one of your shorts; you're really inspiring.)
I'm on my second box of the Paul Rueben oil pastels. I started with Sennelier but I'm a new artist and Sennelier is really pricey. I love Sennelier bc they're like lipstick and the colors are amazing. I'm a big fan of the uber soft oil pastels. I agree Paul Rueben OP's are a decent Sennelier knock-off which is why I use them. I love the blendability of PR. And I do love the colors, however you're right, there is some inconsistencies with creaminess and they do tend to be a little shiney. Neither of those things stop me from using them.
Thanks for reviewing these, it’s good to know about the inconsistency with the texture issue. But, WOW these two drawings are wonderful!! So gorgeous when you added the texture of the scratchy-scratch on the last one. (Bummed it was a frustrating process because of the stickiness) Personally, I 😍love😍 the Chi-Chi hair inspo close up piece, the character is rather androgynous and I love the composition of the figure being partially cropped. Gorgeous work as usual. 💗
if you want creamier blues (because i had the problem in which the blues didn’t apply very opaque and soft) roll them in ur hand and heat them up. it will look more like the others if that texture is what ur going for. for some reason the blues just need to be heated
This was an EXCELLENT review. You gave all the pros and cons. I like creamy but with sticky crumbles the side of my hand will mush them around. Still I might try them. I always learn so much from you- I like that you pointed out the values were less dark when you blended- but it looked a lot better with the fixative. Anyway, you’re truly the best and love watching you do op. I would watch a whole op painting in real time without skipped parts or speeded up if you posed that.
The emotional build-up and the expressions in general got me entertained. We love an honest review, I like them both! I'm anticipating if you'll gonna be using them next time, I'm invested in your reaction and the birth of drama.
Absolutely love the second portrait! As to recommendations of pastels to check out - van Gogh oil pastels! They are pretty cheap I think and maybe a bit less creamy but they are fun to use (their white seems to be better for blending because it is not that opaque tho)
AND I love your style!!! The colors and blending are really beautiful and I enjoy the exaggerated features of your subjects very much. I like the scratching away of material too! So glad I found your channel! 💜🧡
one thing that was very illuminating for me was that you don't like all of your drawings and that you started over. every time I make mistakes or something that is just meh, I get so discouraged. to know that even professional artist do this is really inspiring. yeah, "failure" can be inspirational. thank you for all you do. love your content.
Finally! I found another Left Handed pastel artist! I am retraining myself to use my left hand, since my right isn't working right anymore, so I search for leftys that I enjoy watching and whose art is truly inspiring! Thanks, Teresa
I guess the second lady is my favorite, since I can watch your hand work better, I am shopping for pastels now and have two of these sets on order right now!
HI out there. Another fun video to explore your reviews and talent. I'm always impressed by your use of wicked skin tone rhythms. I love both portraits, so I dunno which one I like more! Aahhhhh! Take care out there in this crazy existence. TTFN.
Both drawings are bomb, but I gotta go with the second one as well. The flat top with the funky scratches just looks so good! I might not be someone requesting these reviews, since I don't work in oil pastels myself, but I sure do love them :)
I love your videos and reviews! Your happy personality radiates, thank you. I'm just starting out with oil pastels - currently have the Sennelier 48, waiting for my Munguyo 48 and also have several less expensive ones from Daiso and some VanGogh.
I think the difference may be with creamer oil pastels, it gets deeper into the paper, which means the white of the paper isn't showing through, making the colors look dull. The creaminess would make the blending easier and the two colors become muddy when combined because the pigments would mix together more than with a dryer pastel.
I just wanna say thank you again for being an absolute ray of sunshine! I LOVE watching your videos, and I look forward to each and every one of them. They're an absolute joy!
Your portraits are gorgeous! I often use oil pastel just for my backgrounds, making something loose and rough to contrast with a smoother coloring style on the subject of my piece. But it's been a while since I used all pastel and tried to make them look, you know, good. 😂 I got this brand for Christmas recently and loved the texture, you've definitely got me inspired to pull them out and experiment again!
Hey bud Paul Rebens has reformulated their oil pastels. They are called "Haiya" oil pastels by Paul Rubens. They are considered a sennelier dupe. Let me know what you think. I have them and I think they are intact very close. Thanks for all your reviews!❤
OMG you made me scare my cats with an outburst of a hag cackle!🤣 "I was so excited I put on lotion, it might not look like it...shut up!"👏🤣😂 The world needs your energy, your humor.....🥰 New to your channel and binging your videos right now, what is your favorite paper and pastels? Also if you’re looking for recommendations for future videos- I’d love to see you try like an a strictly black and white oil pastel drawing or a monochromatic portrait with just various shades of purples or blues for example. I absolutely adore all of your art and your art is so inspirational to me with my art :’)
Oh I absolutely love the dark haired woman, she really stands out to me, it’s cool to see you take your style in a different direction that’s still true to you.
Thank you for posting. It's so nice to see someone else work with these oil pastel. I personally adore this set and recommend them to folks. I really adore how the second face came out truly. :) Best wishes. 💛
Would love a review of the Paul Rubens Haiya pastels...most reviews consider them very close to Sennelier, but also WAY superior to this line of PR you just tested. Love your art!
Oil pastels are my favorite medium. I use Paul Rubens too. I just received the Morandi set in the mail yesterday. I have been waiting for YOU to review them. I have pastel storage but still have the lovely boxes in my closet.
I almost ordered that set...would love to know what you think about the colors and if they lived up to your expectations. I opted to purchase their 2 macaron color sets and love them. I use them ailing side my mungyo gallery set.
@@stephanie_smith I expected a muted palette but still find the pastels very colorful. They are creamy like other Paul Rubens oil pastels with some inconsistent texture between colors as some reviewers of the other sets have pointed out. I like them all very much but I still use my other pastels too.
@@eBookHoarder thank you for responding!! Its sounds like you are enjoying them as a beautiful addition. I love both drawings, the colors and facial expressions are amazing, and the background of flat top boy/ scratchy scratches really accentuate it💕🔥 Paul Rubens are on my wishlist; want them even more after seeing this video!
I just found you and Wow! You're so funny and you articulate the characteristics of your media so well. I love your art style too. I like the flat-top painting the best because of the scratching. I have never seen this technique before. It really adds to the overall feel of the painting. You did such a nice review. One thing I'd like to see you try is the pallet knife technique. I liked and subscribed so I can see more of your inspitational work. Love 😘
I don't know if you like arts and crafts, but I love the videos where you bring you artistic style to craft type things. I enjoy seeing you tackle different media. I love your Caroline doll , the Halloween reef , and that time you made that "Little shop of horrors " plant. All great videos. Oh yeah, that rug was also pretty cool.
I just want to say thank you! I've been in a pretty bad place lately and thanks to you , your art , and your personality , I'm starting to come round to a better place You make me smile with your AMAZING personality and the more a person smiles and laughs the harder it is to be sad. and your art inspires me in my own art journey. So again thank you for being you!
Question: have ever tried the pan pastels? I know they’re a lot different than oil pastels but was wondering if you would ever consider trying them 😁 (also, I have not tried them either lol)
I am glad to have happened across this review. It is as honest as it gets IMO and it covers a lot of areas that were of interest to me. After seeing the review, however, I believe mungyo and sennelier will stay as my favorites.
Oh and I wanted to add I went into the base of Paul Rubens oil pastels and was able to color on it with the Caran D’Ache Neocolor I crayons so that was really fun too.
Which drawing is your favorite? Also Have you used these? Or will you?
All of them. And no, never used oil pastel but maybe i will
I LOVED ALL OF THEM! But I will say that my favorite is the 2nd and 3rd ones that you did because the colors just popped and spoke to me more~ Beautiful work😁🖌🎨💛

I love both drawings, the colors and facial expressions are amazing, and the background of flat top boy/ scratchy scratches really accentuate it💕🔥 Paul Rubens are on my wishlist; want them even more after seeing this video!
I NEED a print of that portrait of the girl (the 90s-ish one) I hope you release one!! and make it biiiiiiiig
I love Paul rubens oil pastels. Also, your videos inspired me to even get into oil pastels!! Thank you😊🌟✋️
I’ve been waiting for a post so yay
I love how colorful she came out with that darker hair. Man I can watch you work all day.
I've been in a pretty bad place lately and thanks to you , your art , and your personality , I'm starting to come round to a better place
You make me smile with your AMAZING personality and the more a person smiles and laughs the harder it is to be sad. and your art inspires me in my own art journey. So again thank you for being you!
Question: have ever tried the pan pastels? I know they’re a lot different than oil pastels but was wondering if you would ever consider trying them 😁 (also, I have not tried them either lol)
Liking it? LIKING IT?!! How about ABSOLUTELY LOVING IT, you danged perfectionist!!! It’s GORGEOUS. STOP JUST LIKING YOUR ART. LOVE IT.
