  • In this new series, we cover a bands entire discography and give you an idea good places to start listening, places that are worth checking out later, and occasionally, places to avoid.
On this debut episode we take a look at one of my favorite bands of all time... The Tragically Hip.
    RIP Gord.

Just a heads up. At beginning where I say "longer vids are going away", I mean the "Full Episode" format videos. The videos with all the skits and sketches and stuff. Longer vids like Catch-Up QUickies and Best/Worst of the year lists, those aren't going anywhere. I promise. It's just the MEGASODES that are going away.
Forgive me if I wasn't clear about that in the initial video.
    Cheers!

@@kylehegedus5498 Luckily the Hip draw less heavily on the sound of the Byrds. And the quirkiness of Gord's lyrics are less on the surface than Stipe's can be. With the Hip, once you get your head inside the song, it all makes sense and you're immersed.

As an American I was SO lucky to live on Lake Erie across from Ontario. In Conneaut Ohio, the upper right hand corner of the state, I was able to listen to FM 96 out of London Ontario. It was a Twofer Tuesday in 1989 or 1990 when I first heard the Hip. The second I heard Gord's voice I was hooked. Hell, I don't think Road Apples had been released yet, so I was discovering the Hip around the same time as everyone in Canada.
I had to wait over a year for Sam Goody in Erie PA to get the cassette in. I think they got tired of me asking for it.
When Gord died I had been a fan of this amazing group of superstars for close to 30 years. Since I was 15 years old, actually. I was 43 years old and I cried like a baby. For days. My wife, who liked the Hip (didn't absolutely love them the way I did) just let me cry. I still feel it to this day.
    RIP, Gordie.
Oh, and for money, Scared is a brilliant track, and Day for Night is my favorite album.
And, I LOVED the first EP. Last American Exit will be the name of my band if I ever start one. And don't get me started on how great I'm a Werewolf Baby is. That song is brilliance personified.

Just over a decade ago, I, on a whim and at the young age of seventeen or so, picked up two Hip albums. Being Canadian, I had obviously known about the Hip for some time; I was just getting into music seriously and wanted to give them more of a chance than I had heard on the radio.
The first album I purchased was their newest one from 2009 - We Are The Same. I also bought Fully Completely.
Those two albums made me into one of the biggest fans of the Hip ever. When they came to my city in 2013, I made sure to see them. I have all their studio albums. I will always miss Gord.

How to Get Into Coheed And Cambria (IMO):
    The Must Hears-
Good Apollo I Am Burning Star IV Vol. 1: From Fear Through The Eyes Of Madness
(Them at their absolute best. Compositionally, it encompasses their whole spectrum of sound without any awkward or out of place transitions. Claudio and Travis finally introduce guitar solos, and the story proves a heady and almost meta experience with songs from the perspective of the writer. This is the album with Welcome Home on it, undoubtedly the band's most famous song, but it also has catchier tunes like Ten Speed (Of God's Blood And Burial) and The Suffering, as well as prog trips like Apollo I: The Writing Writer and The Willing Well quadrilogy. Honestly, there's not a bad song on this album. Not only is this my favorite Coheed album, this is my favorite album of all time. If nothing else, check this one out)
In Keeping Secrets Of Silent Earth 3
(The one that put them on the map. They took the sound of their first release, and expanded upon it. The addition of ambitious new song structures, gelling more as an ensemble, and the sheer majesty of the tracks like the title track and The Crowing juxtaposed with poppier songs like Blood Red Summer and Favor House Atlantic warrant a listen)
    No World For Tomorrow
(The closest thing Coheed has to a straight-up Hard-Rock record. They're once again able to give us a lot of range in their sound, while also making themselves a little more palatable to the casual rock fan than on previous releases. The title track and Gravemakers and Gunslingers are both exciting and heavy (by Coheed standards), while songs like Feathers and Running Free sound like they could be on the radio, and the final five songs bring us back in Coheed's familiar proggy goodness. Not to mention, Mother Superior is GORGEOUS, and an essential listen for ANY Coheed fan)
    Next Steps-
    Second Stage Turbine Blade
(The one that started it all. The band is still trying to find their sound here, and maybe were trying to sound a little too much like At The Drive In at points, but overall has a sincere and raw aesthetic from a new band looking for their footing. Excluding the instrumental opener, the first four tracks are all excellent and classics for this band (I LOVE Time Consumer. Easily in my top 5 songs from this band. Maybe even top 3. It's damn good) And while there's a noticeable dip in the middle of the album, Junesong Proivison, Neverender, and God Send Conspirator close this album on a really strong note)
    Afterman: Ascension
(They took some chances with this release, especially when they made the 8-minute Domino the Destitute their lead-off single. But this album presents more of an ethereal sound with tracks like Mothers of Men and Evagria the Faithful, while maintaining their intensity with Holly Wood the Cracked and Vic The Butcher, and even incorporating their softer and more vulnerable sides with The Afterman and Subtraction. While not perfect, this album is great, and I don't care what anybody says)
    Color Before The Sun
(The only album to date that doesn't follow the concept, and easily Coheed's most palatable. This album is the softest album in Coheed's discography, and addresses more personal topics. This was a polarizing choice among some fans, and while I've grown to love it, it is a terrible representation for what the rest of the band's catalogue sounds like (That's why I put it under "Next Steps" instead of it being a "Must Hear") I usually skip Young Love and The Audience when I listen to it, but I would say this album as a whole is definitely worth your time)
    Deep Cuts-
    Afterman: Descension
(They did a lot of experimenting and tried out some new sounds, with varying degrees of success. It opens really weak with Pretelethal, and while Sentry The Defiant and The Hard Sell are both decent tracks, they struggle to pick up the energy. Number City is a cool experiment that payed off really well, and the final four songs foreshadow the softness of Color before the sun, and while I like these tracks, it causes the tone of the album to be pretty lopsided. But I'll be damned if Gravity's Union isn't phenomenal!)
    Year Of The Black Rainbow
(There are some gems on here: The Broken, Here We Are Juggernaut, All That I Am (Made Out Of Nothing), and World of Lines are all definitely worth your time. But I still find myself reaching for the skip button more than once. The guitar tone is fuzzy and all over the place, and they tried to experiment on tracks like Far and This Shattered Symphony, and I really don't think they payed off. There are some excellent pieces to this album, but the whole just isn't there)
    Skip and/or Proceed With Caution-
    Anything from their Shabutie days
(Weird even by Coheed standards, and the low-fi sound isn't doing them many favors here. Only diehards need apply)

I like the idea for this series. With how many bands and artists who released so many albums throughout their carriers, it can be kind of hard to start somewhere, and asking an expert what the best way to get into these bands is probably the best way to do so. Some bands that come into my mind when thinking who needs an episode for this series include Rush, The Offspring, Anti-Flag, Fu Manchu, and Ween.

At Transformation is an album dedicated to his wife and Man Machine Poem is my favorite album they have and is extremely tired, and that is what makes it amazing. He wrote it when literally dying. He knew he was dying and made an album to document it. It's a beautiful look into Gord's experience.

This was the first episode of this series that you made on a band I actually hadn't heard beforehand, so this was the first time I was watching the show as it was meant to be: introducing a band to a viewer. And I must admit, the Hip is a pretty great band. They remind me a lot of R.E.M., which is a great thing since they're on my top 5 favorite bands of all time. My ranking of this band would be:
    1. Phantom Power
    2. Road Apples
    3. Fully Completely
    4. Trouble At The Henhouse
    5. World Container (My personal favorite, although not the one I consider the best)
    6. In Between Evolution
    7. We Are The Same
    8. Music At Work
    9. Day For Night
    10. In Violet Light
    11. Man Machine Poem
    12. Now For Plan A
    13. Up To Here
I know you're probably not gonna read this comment, but if you do, I just wanted to say thank you for being such a great content creator, and I'm especially a big fan of this series as it helps a lot of people get into bands they want to start listening, but don't know where to start. Keep up the great work.

Great idea for a video series. Approaching a new artist for the first time can be daunting, especially if your experience with an artist is so limited, so I enjoyed getting your personal take on this band that isn't a household name (at least not here in the States), but you feel deserves our time. As for not doing movie length Megasodes anymore, it's no issue. You have to do what's best for yourself. Keep up the great work!

I'm actually kinda glad the super longform videos are going away, the time between is massive and the time commitment to watching one reaches curated stream levels of time sink. Not to say they weren't good, I've learned more about bands than I ever would have without them. However, I see the idea of shorter episodes as more easily digestible and it gives me a lot more crash to watch in the long term. Plus I want more bad album covers....they are like my favorite show alongside the best and worst lists.

Crash thanks for this amazing video. It has touched me deeply to watch someone who's so compassionate about the tragically hip and Gord. I grew up listening to them and still can't believe we will never get anything else from them again. Did you listen to Gord's last album, Introduce yourself? Man I still can't get through it all. It's too emotional for me. Also, thanks for the shout out to Canadian music!
I will end this comment with my top three favorite songs (which is very hard to narrow down): 1. Nautical disaster 2. Bobcaygon 3. Ahead by a century

Hard to express what the Hip mean to Canadians of a certain vintage -- this was the band that was omnipresent in many of our lives for 30 years.
There are very few days gone by where I haven't listened to Depression Suite and It's a Good Life if You Don't Weaken -- my favourite songs they ever wrote. An exceptional live band that was able to grasp the moment and lay it bare on stage for the rest of us to enjoy.

So... that being said, how long will we get to see a How to Get Into: Rush? And one I have an interest in, an ILTS for your favorite Rush song. (Mine is either Time Stands Still or Sub-divisions)

I'll try something with one of my favorite bands, The Mountain Goats. Another band that never really got their proper dues:
    Start with:
    Tallahassee
    The Sunset Tree
    We Shall All Be Healed
    Transcendental Youth
    Beat The Champ
    Then move on to:
    All Hail West Texas
    Get Lonely
    Heretic Pride
Life of The World To Come
    All Eternal's Deck
    Goths
    Deep Dive:
Any of their post-studio albums. I'd say start with either The Coroner's Gambit or Zilopite Machine, but other than that just throw a dart at the board and see where it lands.

    • @CasualAlbiniAppreciator
      @CasualAlbiniAppreciator 6 років тому +1

BTC over Goths? I'd flip that, imo Goths is (while undeniably different), a milestone for Goats, John's songwriting taking a massive leap of faith and god did he stick the shit out of that landing.. Plus it's an album that might appeal to those generally turned off by the 'typical' Goats sound. Also I'd put All Eternals above We Shall All Be Healed, though that's just a matter of preference I guess.
Oh, and to start with - let's just make people listen to You Were Cool, for a simple acoustic song, I feel it underlines everything John does right with his style

Damn, now you'll have to deal with us spamming you with even more suggestions :D For me, something cool would be a lesser known punk band, or something out of UK. Like Chumbawamba (no, seriously, their catalogue is impressive, if idiosyncratically diverse af), The Levellers (folk rock/punk in the early days that isn't based on Irish melodies, which is somewhat rare, think you might like it if you dive into Levelling The Land or Letters From The Underground) or Propagandhi (though they don't have that many albums out, I feel that would be brilliant since they are one of the more important political bands in the punk scene, also you'd have less work ;) ). Or hell, something like NOFX or The Offspring if we all want to get nostalgic and miss old Epi/Fat releases.

The only thing I can come up with is the gatekeepers have put forth a great deal of effort to divide the world and the hip was in direct contrast... once you get the hip your already a better person for it... Really, when it comes to that format, it’s more a matter of trimming out the fat. The skits, the sketches, the long jokes. The show just needs to be a little more lean and mean. Vids like that just take so much energy they can be a real huge drain. Plus, people are generally more responsive to the shorter stuff, so it just makes sense.
We’ll still be going there. We’re just gonna be taking a less scenic route. If that makes any sense.
      Cheers!

As another one of those other Americans who listened to The Hip in a metaphorical vacuum and can take you where I flat out cried when ABAC ended in Kingston, it absolutely tripped me why they never caught on here. Or anywhere else. I once read that Gord was Canada’s Springsteen, and yes, there’s some truth there. I feel like Gord goes deeper than that. I feel like Gord captures the Canadian experience as a whole better than Springsteen does the American.
