  • Dan Aykroyd has introduced the world to many unforgettable characters, from Beldar Conehead and Elwood Blues to Ghostbuster Ray Stantz and Ray "the auto parts king" Zalinsky.
    As one of the original cast members of Saturday Night Live, the Kingston-born actor has cemented his status as a Canadian icon.
    Aykroyd was back home to celebrate another Canadian symbol, the Caesar, for "national Caesar day," which also happens to be the 50th anniversary of the drink. He joined q's Tom Power to take a trip down memory lane and look at a career that has spanned more than four decades.

    Everyone here saying how The Hip are done, because Gord is gone. I get that, but don’t forget that the other members of the band are all amazing as well. They deserve some recognition for the bands success.

    My parents had recorded that live performance from the Hip on SNL, life changing for me as a kid, we would watch it over and over. Gord is a legend and a brilliant lyricist, singer and passionate performer. This was obviously a shining moment for them, and they absolutely crushed it. Great to know that Dan was a fan and gave them the opportunity.

    Dan Aykroyd really is a true intellect. Some of the dialogue and monologues he has delivered over the years in his films, is truly exceptional. Definately under appreciated.

    I got the to see the tragically hip in Winnipeg and I seen them 4 times but the last time I had the luxury to see the hip and Gord Downy was dressed up in a glitter ball suit and was the awesome show that I was not missing. The tragically hip will always be my favorite band

    I love Dan’s suggestion for The Hip finding a new lead....but Gord is Gord...miss the hell outta Gord...Don’t ever change Dan...chilled out and talented. Empaths unite ❤️

      So, there will never be anyone like Gord. It is like Zep when they lost Bonham. Some people can not be replaced.

    • @j_freed
      @j_freed 3 роки тому +2

      If they got a mere sound alike to replace Gord it would be soulless and terrible… And if they got someone with his kooky wonderful soul, the person wouldn’t sound like anything recognizable... It’s a lose lose situation. Of course now they are working with Feist.

    • @markgnorthcott
      @markgnorthcott 3 роки тому +1

      He said it in just the right way. We shouldn't look to replace Gord... But we shouldn't let the music for, it should be allowed to be the poetry it is, interpreted and brought forward by others.

    • @gw593
      @gw593 2 роки тому +2

      Never ever, should they ever try to replace Gord, that’s like Rush trying to replace Geddy if he passed, don’t be silly.

      I want the rest of the band to play instrumental shows where the audience are the singers. Everyone knows the songs, they just need to play the music and we've got this.

      How attached are you to your best friend? If I lost my best friend I would honor him and his memory every opportunity. We're for real best friends though. Like, he has different parents but we are 100% brothers. Closer than brothers really. Alot of people aren't that close to their siblings.

    Gord's LEGACY does not need any tribute singer to keep it alive. Plenty of good HIP cover bands already and nobody gives a crap about Adam Lambert touring with Queen. Gord was all about artistic freedom and original creativity. If we want to honour him respectfully and properly, it would be more cool to create an annual music festival in his name, and celebrate new original artists so they can have a spotlight of their own to shine. Call it The Blow At High Dough (BAHD) Festival. Invite Robbie, Johnny, Paul and Gord (and Gord Downie's drummer son) to play a few EPIC jams near the end. Fans would LOVE it.

    • @realmusiklover
      @realmusiklover 4 роки тому +2

      Exactly. It was an ill-considered suggestion from Aykroyd and I'm more than a little surprised at him. Queen these days are a shadow of their former selves (I'm not interested in the numbers going to see them) and I'd hate to see that happen to the guys in the Hip. That he doesn't remember Freddie Mercury's name perhaps says it all. The Hip's legacy is strong and, for me, Gord is irreplaceable. It should be left alone.

    • @nursemarn
      @nursemarn 3 роки тому +1

      I’d go to that. There will never be a another Gord just as there will never be another Freddy. I hope they’re jamming together in the great beyond.

      I would be down for a BAHD music festival, do one in each province. They are the band that can help heal the nations people after all of this awful news about the Residential School tragedies.
      What is done is done, we can’t let it rip us apart and THE HIP, could loosen the grip on this thing called hate.

    Sure, they COULD find a singer who would be ablevto do a decent job. But, doubtful they'd find a canadian, we just don't have the population to choose from.
    If they were to do that, i think they should go with a female, and that would instantly stop people from making comparisons.

    I loved the Hip. LOVED. And if Aykroyd had a part in getting the band on SNL that’s awesome because they deserved to be there. But for some reason it never sat well with me that he had to go and introduce them instead of the host that night. I think it was John Goodman. I kind of felt like he was grandstanding doing that. Like he was saying he was the reason they were there.
