- Dan Aykroyd has introduced the world to many unforgettable characters, from Beldar Conehead and Elwood Blues to Ghostbuster Ray Stantz and Ray "the auto parts king" Zalinsky.
As one of the original cast members of Saturday Night Live, the Kingston-born actor has cemented his status as a Canadian icon.
Aykroyd was back home to celebrate another Canadian symbol, the Caesar, for "national Caesar day," which also happens to be the 50th anniversary of the drink. He joined q's Tom Power to take a trip down memory lane and look at a career that has spanned more than four decades.

Everyone here saying how The Hip are done, because Gord is gone. I get that, but don’t forget that the other members of the band are all amazing as well. They deserve some recognition for the bands success.
My parents had recorded that live performance from the Hip on SNL, life changing for me as a kid, we would watch it over and over. Gord is a legend and a brilliant lyricist, singer and passionate performer. This was obviously a shining moment for them, and they absolutely crushed it. Great to know that Dan was a fan and gave them the opportunity.
I love how he still has a connection to John. Such a kickass friendship. I just love that.
Dan Aykroyd really is a true intellect. Some of the dialogue and monologues he has delivered over the years in his films, is truly exceptional. Definately under appreciated.
100% agree, mr aykroyd been a hero of mine since the 80s when i was a kid, im happy that of all the people i could hav picked to be my hero back then i got a hero who truly lives life to the most in so many different professions
Very true👍
Wayne550 yes, check out his interview with Joe Rogan. Excellent !
@@deniseinsocaldeniseinsocal9510 Thanks, I will👍
Dan, my brother in Asperger’s.
I’d listen too this absolute Canadian LEGEND song the blues all day every day
Never heard this interviewer before. Kid, you’re great. Love your interest and enthusiasm.
Man. I could listen to this for hours.
I love Dan's Kingston Police Force hat. Greatest city in Canada.
Great chill dudes. I adore Dan Ackroyd and Bill Murray, They are so amazing!! Soulful Roots music mixed with jazz and gospel, is our history. Great ballads, melodies, harmonies, story telling and poetry beats.
A genuine pleasure to watch this. So pure.
I got the to see the tragically hip in Winnipeg and I seen them 4 times but the last time I had the luxury to see the hip and Gord Downy was dressed up in a glitter ball suit and was the awesome show that I was not missing. The tragically hip will always be my favorite band
I love Dan’s suggestion for The Hip finding a new lead....but Gord is Gord...miss the hell outta Gord...Don’t ever change Dan...chilled out and talented. Empaths unite ❤️
So, there will never be anyone like Gord. It is like Zep when they lost Bonham. Some people can not be replaced.
If they got a mere sound alike to replace Gord it would be soulless and terrible… And if they got someone with his kooky wonderful soul, the person wouldn’t sound like anything recognizable... It’s a lose lose situation. Of course now they are working with Feist.
He said it in just the right way. We shouldn't look to replace Gord... But we shouldn't let the music for, it should be allowed to be the poetry it is, interpreted and brought forward by others.
Never ever, should they ever try to replace Gord, that’s like Rush trying to replace Geddy if he passed, don’t be silly.
I want the rest of the band to play instrumental shows where the audience are the singers. Everyone knows the songs, they just need to play the music and we've got this.
What a genuine great man. Great Canadian
Loved that John impression ahaha. It's sweet how attached Dan still is to him. I guess it's true, no one's ever really gone. Wonderful interview. Time to go buy his dad's book.
How attached are you to your best friend? If I lost my best friend I would honor him and his memory every opportunity. We're for real best friends though. Like, he has different parents but we are 100% brothers. Closer than brothers really. Alot of people aren't that close to their siblings.
Tom Power, I love you!!!!!
I owned “Briefcase Full of Blues” on vinyl in the early 80’s when I was a teenager, I was into Zeppelin, Sabbath, etc., but you guys really got me started in the blues.
Exact same thing for me too, my teenage boys love the movie and the music.
Gord's LEGACY does not need any tribute singer to keep it alive. Plenty of good HIP cover bands already and nobody gives a crap about Adam Lambert touring with Queen. Gord was all about artistic freedom and original creativity. If we want to honour him respectfully and properly, it would be more cool to create an annual music festival in his name, and celebrate new original artists so they can have a spotlight of their own to shine. Call it The Blow At High Dough (BAHD) Festival. Invite Robbie, Johnny, Paul and Gord (and Gord Downie's drummer son) to play a few EPIC jams near the end. Fans would LOVE it.
Exactly. It was an ill-considered suggestion from Aykroyd and I'm more than a little surprised at him. Queen these days are a shadow of their former selves (I'm not interested in the numbers going to see them) and I'd hate to see that happen to the guys in the Hip. That he doesn't remember Freddie Mercury's name perhaps says it all. The Hip's legacy is strong and, for me, Gord is irreplaceable. It should be left alone.
I’d go to that. There will never be a another Gord just as there will never be another Freddy. I hope they’re jamming together in the great beyond.
There is always a chance Sammy Hagar will join the band…
I would be down for a BAHD music festival, do one in each province. They are the band that can help heal the nations people after all of this awful news about the Residential School tragedies.
What is done is done, we can’t let it rip us apart and THE HIP, could loosen the grip on this thing called hate.
Lost it again when they started talking about Gord. God, that one still hurts so much.
Such an effortless transition into a blues number! Wonderful! I wasn't expecting that 👏👏 Down Child is great, I listened to them a lot growing up.
I saw downchild 2 years ago it was great. Lots of fun.
From Ireland we love you Mr Aykroyd, happy holidays sir
I'd love to see Michael Stipe tour with The Hip.
I gotta say, this short performance was, musically speaking, a raft of notches above Elwood! Great job! Of course Elwood was just a kid. Blues Brothers Rock!!
Just watched the blues brothers and it is awesome!
It is eternal
Most movies I watch once, maybe twice. But there are a select few I never get tired of. The Blues Brothers is one of them. Always crank it up for the music! It was also my last chance to see musicians that have since passed on.
Omg Sarah Harmer and Hip in Sin Jawns at MUN. I was there with ya bro! 😛
All the audio gear on their table INSTANTLY became Ghostbusters gear in my brain as soon as they brought up the supernatural
Dan your a class act great interview awesome guitar playing also :-)
Amazing 😻 ❤️🇨🇦❤️✌️🤘🙏🏼
Love the hip, Danny and the occult
I've mentioned this a few times. Steven Page (ex-Barenaked Ladies) singer, is a goofy guy too and can hit the same vocal ranges. He would be perfect to fill the Gord Downie slot................but for a one night only gig. I would love to see that!
I adore you dan aykroyd
I admire the Hip putting it down, its the Greatest Salute to the Greatest Front Man that ever was.....G.E. Downie the ONLY
Puttin down. Great song
Why do we love Tom Power???? there is just no reason why not............Camellia from Manitoba loves you by the way
Dan is a great Canadian boy🇨🇦
back side of RMC? LOL, they played at a Copper Penny Christmas Party 1989 while i'm deciding on whisky or beer.
So Ghostbusters was based on ideas from his family in Kingston, my town.
Dan Aykroyd!
Awesome 👌🆒️🙌
Ottawa!!!. My little corner of the world too!
He is a fellow resident of South Frontenac Ontario....Sydenham actually
Aykroyd’s dad always comes to the Kingston car shows…
Pretty good singing
Agreed. Loved the impromptu song.
At 3:06 he says something most people would miss: "The Hock", the only singer for Downchild Blues Band that ever mattered, at least as far as I'm concerned. Every shouter that followed (when the Hock left the band) was just treading water:

My MOTHER FROM CAN VANCOUVER
Us Canadians eh....!...gimme a beer
sorry to be rude i dont mean to be but i thought it was Akroid, not Aykroid.
Sure, they COULD find a singer who would be ablevto do a decent job. But, doubtful they'd find a canadian, we just don't have the population to choose from.
If they were to do that, i think they should go with a female, and that would instantly stop people from making comparisons.

He can sing too?
I loved the Hip. LOVED. And if Aykroyd had a part in getting the band on SNL that’s awesome because they deserved to be there. But for some reason it never sat well with me that he had to go and introduce them instead of the host that night. I think it was John Goodman. I kind of felt like he was grandstanding doing that. Like he was saying he was the reason they were there.
How IS UR WIFE.
..
DR D. LOVE U
A wish sandwich
Rubber Biscuit
Not the same without gord 😢
Love Dan, but no one can write Canada, sing Canada, get Canada like Gord. Sorry Dan, no.
I agree with Dan, but not Feist. Never. He's right, though, I'd like to see someone, an artist, maybe Colin from the Trews. But someone...who loved and loves The Hip and Gord.
