Just watched the Dave Grohl interview from a couple months ago... When he said as a child he could hear how Carly and Mick's voices combined made a "chord" when he heard this song on the radio, I said to myself... "They must have played a different "duet" version in his radio market, because as far I was concerned, Carly was the only person singing on this song." Of course now it became incredibly obvious why some people succeed very well with music and others struggle. The fact that he could hear that when he was 7 or 8 years old in his mother's Maverick completley blows me away, because those cars (like most in the 70's) were mono and had one crappy speaker in the dashboard... Simply amazing.
Like any other skill or language, ear training can be learned. You didn't hear Mick's voice because you did not expect to hear it. If you expect to hear Nagger "ghosting" the chorus on this song, I bet you will hear it. I will say that we all have different brains that give us a natural affinity for certain disciplines.
My lady loves to do Sudoku. She reads Calculus textbooks for fun! 😑 She has a "Math" brain. I have a mental block against Mathematics. If I am forced to do it, I can do it on the 2nd or 3rd try as I did in college when I took Algebra & Trigonometry 3 x! I think my mental block to math started with my math teacher, Mr. Caspari, in 7th grade.
Mick’s name is in the credits on the album as backup vocals and as well as Paul and Linda McCartney and other people mentioned as backups on various songs in the No Secrets album. Remember ?
I can only discern Mick's voice in the chorus, and that was because I was consciously trying to hear it. If no one told me that Mick Jagger sang on this track, I would have gone to my grave not knowing that, and that would've been fine with me. He is so buried in the mix they could've gotten anyone to sing it and it would still be a great song. It's all Carly! 😍
Just heard this song for the first time a few days ago. As soon as I heard it I was hooked. As a Stones fan, as soon as I heard the chorus, I knew that was Mick’s voice. His vocal timbre is so unique, I’ve never heard someone with a sound even close to his. So cool to hear how well they blend in isolation. Their voices really complimented each other.
I can hear the differences in their delivery. Carly ends each line smoothly sliding to the finish, dragging out the note a bit. Mick delivers his line staccato, with a sharp attack and sudden ending like a machine gun.😎
Another song you can listen to to hear vocal "ghosting," is The Doors song "Riders On The Storm." If you listen carefully to the chorus, you will hear Jim ghosting himself. He clearly sings "Riders on the storm," and then he "whispers," "riders on the storm." That's another one where once you hear it, you will never "unhear" it. 😉
The whispering you hear on Riders on the Storm was Jim Morrison's last recording with The Doors. His overlay was his last track. He died a few weeks later in Paris. Once you hear it, you can't unhear it. Incredible song.
I thought Carly wrote this song about Mick Jagger. I didnt know he actually sang on it. Even the isolated vocals have a lot of bleed through from the violins and other noise. Its like they didnt record her in an iso booth. I remember an interview where Carly said Mick used to call her up and say wotyu doin
This was played all the time on AM radio (there was no FM yet) when I was a kid. That's right no internet, no cell phones, no pushbutton phones And no FM. My son thinks I'm joking. 🤔
There was always FM, but most of the pop stations were AM. FM stations started popping up in the late 1960s as music started to break from the template of songs 3 minutes or less.
What is that sound at 1:22? Sounds like a disgusted 'ugh'. "When you said we were such a pretty pair, UGH, never leave." 🙀 Absolutely never heard that sound in the song before. I love it MORE now 😻🤣😻🤣
Could someone please put the timestamps, on when Mick’s voice actually comes in background. From what I can determine, its only a very very small fraction of the song. I think the song would’ve been number one with or without Mick’s very faint background singing.
What’s even more interesting is how Carly once explained in an interview that she found herself falling into singing “you’re so vine” as opposed to ”you’re so vain” due to being influenced by Mick’s verbal twang while they were singing….
And to think the night before her wedding to James Taylor, Bianca Jagger called to let James know that her husband and Carly were having an affair. The most shocking thing in that story to me is that Bianca had James Taylors' phone number..lol
This is NOT Mick Jagger's "isolated vocal track". As such, this UA-cam vid is a SHAM. It is Carly Simon's vocal track, with Mick Jagger's voice buried deep down in the mix. Forget it.
The title read, "Isolated vocal track: Mick Jagger singing on Carly Simon's "You're So Vain" (1972)" Notice the colon " : ". It is not the same as using the preposition " of ". The rest of your assessment is correct as one can barely discern Mick's voice. The video is not a sham, but your fake indignation is.

what a horrible idea that was mick was edited out in a lot of it, there is a few areas where you can make out micks voice, the guy is no soprano and could not harmonize with anybody that was the difference between the Beatles and The stones, the stones was flat out raunchy rock and roll, the beatles were about Harmony

Same! I’m like, huh?!?! Is he mistaken? Let me look this up lol
I hear layered harmony vocals. I wonder how often Dave hears three voices when there are only two?
I never had a problem to identify Mick Jagger's voice in the song.
It was a no brainer.

DEFINITELY, Unmistakenly, Mick in the background.
Especially every time he belts out, “Doan Chew, Doan Chew, Doann CHEWWWW..?”.
👍
.
Can't wait to share this to my X, he didn't believe me when I told him I heard Mick in this song.
Thx for the opportunity for a "told you so" moment.
Rise above it, allow the cream to come to the top!-)
..sometimes it's more fun to swallow the cream
Mick's voice and style is so distinctive
How could anyone not know it was Mick! Dang - her voice and performance sounds great.
Wonderful, Beautiful, Amazing 👏🏽 😍

Their voices surly did, Compliment one another. I loved this!❤
Mick's vocals takes this song to a higher level of ear-pleasure to me.
I'm a bigggg fan of Carly Simon and Mick J. The sound and
blended together sooo well. This is the 1st time I've heard this, I loved it!!!
Brilliant harmonized singing!!!!
I can hear the differences in their delivery. Carly ends each line smoothly sliding to the finish, dragging out the note a bit. Mick delivers his line staccato, with a sharp attack and sudden ending like a machine gun.😎
Just phantasmagorical !
I just watched Ms. Simon on a CBS morning show 2015, comment that it is indeed Mr. Jagger.
TY . i've always struggled to actually hear MJ's distinctive vocals , they shud've been placed more prominently in the audio mix .
I wonder if Mick, Carly and other celebrities go on UA-cam and watch videos of themselves?
I always thought that part was sung by James Taylor, but it's absolutely Jagger. Thanks for posting it.
I quickly recognized the vocal as being Mick Jagger when wearing headphones on first listen when the song and album were originally released. 🤷
Deffo Mick Jagger there !!
i heard his voice on a hunch and it led me here lol
Knowing that Mick sang on a track, i hear it right away!
Don't think Mick comes in until the 2nd chorus. You can hear him clearly - especially on headphones 🙂

I thought it was me. Damn
Jagger may have been there but Carly's voice soared right over his
She's an amazing singer but to be fair he was a back up singer. Back up singers shouldn't be the main focus of a song.
Of course it soared over his, he is the back up singer here...what did you expect?
Yes but ...
That's because it was mixed that way.
as it was supposed to.

I knew it! Lol
All UA-cam version of Micks voice are buried. In a car & on the radio Mick comes through. Radio taped Mono versions? Car speakers separate more?
I can't hear it for all the over dubbing of Carly Simon interfering
I could hear Mick Jagger better without the Isolated voice.
How did you isolate these voices from the recording?
splitter.ai/
The Reverb tail on Carly's voice in verse is abruptly short. Otherwise, ty 4 track.
Kann ich mir gut vorstellen, vdass Carly ins Beuteschema von Mick Jagger gepasst haette???

This is why so many people think the song is about him. It's not; it's about Warren Beatty.
Carly said it's about three men and just the second verse is about Warren.
I've heard it's about three guys -- Mick Jagger, Warren Beatty, and David Geffen.
Sounds like he's saying 'me' towards the end
I don't hear it, but it would have been clever of him.

I can’t really say that it amounts to much. It could be almost anyone singing there with her. Although CARLY SIMON can say that she out-sung MICK J.
Almost forget, THANKS for posting this. It has a certain NOSTALGIA value.
Not really that difficult. Mick never had a potent or resourceful voice, he made up for it by putting a lot of personality on his singing
It's called a backing vocal for a reason. It's backing. If it was two lead vocals, it would be a duet.
