Amazing conversation. Such a high level of intimacy - and yet they've invited us into the conversation. And let us not forget that, when this was recorded, Carly was 78 . . . and Dan was 90! How many younger people long for this kind of dialog and wind up TikTok-ing about food or eyelashes instead. Thanks for posting this!

Carly relates so well about her relationship with James Taylor. The sense of messiness, misunderstanding, confusion, needs/desires, failures, stubbornness, regrets. It’s very much too bad addictions interfered with their lives, undoubtedly their children’s lives as well. And time passes, people move on and that time together is history. They both gave us such wonderful music, together and separately, grateful for that.

Not sure if she is honest with herself. Having been in a similar situation, I knew that alcohol gave my husband more joy than I could. I kind of looked at alcohol as his mistress. Carly liked James when he was drinking, but it was the alcohol that changed his mood, not his love for Carly. How I wished that my husband looked forward to seeing me after work as much as he anticipated that first drink. We talked about it and he recognized it, he once asked me “ do you think I like being like this?” I answered “yes “.

It was 2007 in Miami after a small benefit concert. I had flown from California thinking this was my last chance to see her in concert, as I had been always too busy and she rarely performed.
I hung around till after the benefit party was over and when she was leaving, she greeted me with a hug! And a signature on her set list AND a picture posed with her, taken by my daughter who had come with me.

I read her book a while back and saw this complete interview. Heart on her sleeve like me. I remember when they married, it was a big deal. When her marriage was failing with James, she wrote about the moment she was to confront his mistress at his other apartment. My heart broke for her and I know exactly how it feels to love someone who doesn't love you back the same and cheats. (All the things they should give you go to someone else). I can relate to Carly and having that feeling of needing to be connected to people in that way. She even felt bad for Joni later after James left her and was with Carly. I have been with two men who are alcoholics and they are impossible to be with. I am myself a recovered alcoholic for well over 3 decades now. But it still doesn't make the journey with an alcoholic any easier, knowing all about being there. It is sad that he won't relent and just get over it and visit her and their son.

In the bar the couple offered to play in exchange for a place to stay and a meal. The owner didn’t recognize them and said he’d have to hear them play first to see if they were any good. The two walked out. My friend informed her boss who had just walked out. The look on his face was priceless by her account.

I was about 12-13 when I began listening to her on the radio and watching her televised performances. Dan surprised me here by how well he conducted this interview. He very gracefully invited her to "go there" despite not really wanting to at first. I was very surprised hearing at the end of this clip that she still loves him... and that was painful or me to see and hear.
I have not read any biographical books on her or Taylor. But somehow I thought she'd gone on to remarry. They are both music gods in my book. And these kinds of creative couples, I mean real musicians and songwriters, not today's hip hop formulaic crap, just often meet this fate where tangled spirits and energies end up not meshing. Musically, James Taylor's music to me goes way back in time, is timebound, nostalgiac, and for me never provokes new thoughts or emotions; just recalling how I experienced them when initially released. . I still throw an edge to Carly because her songs were ambitious, mysterious, always so beautifully produced and from a new point of view. So for me more interesting musically. I also feel that her catalogue is less timebound by era, and I can re-experience her songs as fresh, as though recorded last week.

Interesting point about JT‘s music being time bound and hers being more ambitious and still fresh over time. It does feel like in some ways that so much of his power was about honestly and simply expressing some of the dark sides of life and hers more about potential and possibility. Thanks for helping me to recognize that consciously, very interesting. And I can also see that as one of the underlying dynamics that could be pretty hard to reconcile. Perhaps she wanted to move forward in relationship and in life, and he really needed to just be where he was.

    • @quicksite

@@DanielBarberMusic Your thoughts are equally stimulating:
"JT honestly and simply expressing some of the dark sides of life and hers more about potential and possibility." That's a completely separate paradigm and fascinating to contemplate.
"Pretty hard to reconcile: perhaps she wanted to move forward in relationship and in life, and he really needed to just be where he was." ... You're getting at levels that are beyond my knowledge of the two of them. I don't have any idea how self-actualized or comfortable with therapy James has been or is - maybe quite a lot and I just have no info on that. Carly has always seemed like someone constantly aware of her feelings and personal growth.

So many can relate to this interview, myself included, having been in the same situation When you are an empath involved with someone who has a addiction, the addiction becomes their relationship as they withdraw from intimacy. You try to make it work, but once outside the relationship, realize it's their story, and you can't fix it, or expect they can change.

I absolutely understand this kind of love. True love never dies, it really doesn't, my true love has been gone 20 years this year and I love him just as much as I did the day he died💕 Its's beautiful but so unfair because I have never been able to move on, I will never be with someone else.

Honestly, please don't write off what I;m saying, it's not platitude or escape: What a blessing that you had such a love. But God your Good Dad would love to bring more love and beauty in your life. If you would become willing to trust Him with it all, and by Him I mean Jesus, He will bring you to a new promised land. Might take a long time, but the journey is worth it. When Jesus said, "I AM the Way the Truth, and the Life," that was God speaking. Jesus has to be our life, not a person. No person has the capacity to be the lifesource for another. Only the creator can handle that. (God is a Trinity - Father, Son and Holy Spirit, but Jesus is included. When you see Him as He truly is, God in the flesh, it opens your eyes.)

When James was asked to talk about their marriage, he simply said he was too young to have married then. And I. Was thinking, well you DID get married and had two beautiful children, and you threw it all away because you couldn’t emotionally connect with her because your drug habit was more important. God, what an idiot he was. And he married a bunch more times and none of them worked out either....so you cannot blame Carly...she always loved you and you threw it away...disgusting, is it any wonder I don’t trust men?

People rarely acknowledge when folks have harmful, belittling views on males, yet are all worked up about misogyny. There isn’t really even a term for bias against the male gender…in common parlance.
It’s frightening to ponder how many folks so inclined, are raising sons.

I worked at the movie studio that released Working Girl. Carly Simon did the theme song for that movie. Anyway, I was talking to her on the phone one day and I said, "You know, that theme song is just so great. I love it!" And she goes, "Really??" lol Like a little kid who was really shocked. I had to laugh and I said that of course it was and it fit the movie perfectly--that it's an anthem. She was so humble and so genuinely appreciative. I'll always love her.

She reminds me of one of my aunts. When I was 10-11 years old when her song, "That's the Way I Always Heard it Would Be", came out was easy for me to visualize in my mind. It made me feel so melancholy, but I love it every time I hear it. I am a book nerd. When I found out her father was the Simon of Simon and Schuster it was more fascinating for me as a child.

Or as I always point out -- there was a time in your life that you had never ever heard of this person, who you now speciously claim "you can't live without." But you have -- you have existed in blissful unawareness of her/his existence -- and you can again.

    • @jasonhurd4379

@@BJones-yw4dd What you say is true to a certain extent. However, your contention takes no account of the fact that meeting a new love could possibly effect such a profound transformation in a man's psyche that he becomes an essentially different person than he was previously, a person so interconnected with the object of affection that it is, at least in theory, impossible to 'live' without them, if one defines 'living' as 'continued and prolonged existence in a state of mental and emotional equilibrium'. Of course, if one defines 'living' merely as 'existence', with no thought for the quality and value of said life, then your contention is correct, albeit a rather dry and prosaic one.
