Great vid! I had a 1990 XJ, 1998 5.9 ZJ, and now have a 1997 TJ 4.0. We can all agree that the 90's were the best years for Jeep! My mom has an '01 60th Anniversary XJ. 1 owner, in great shape. She won't give it up and she's 66 years old.
YES! - my list:#1 REAR wheel drive toss able on fire roads - you can steer them with your right foot, #2 Versatile even in stock form - go anywhere in style truck, #3 Salt of the earth drivetrain will take you there and bring you back - again and again, #4 Perfect size, #5 You can personalize one to hop boulders or just get you down a dirt road to a trail-head - options are endless and relatively inexpensive.
I love my xj! its a 94 cherokee and I got lucky enough to get a xj with the aw4 trans and Chrysler 8.25 rear end with the rare turquoise paint! 233k on it and still runs like a champ!
I have a zj with the 4.0, not sure what transmission but I'm at 290k and still running like a champ, no transmission issues, still wheeling and daily driving. No major problems.
better late than never I guess. I had an automatic go on my 94 Cherokee Country. I prefer manual transmissions and for some of you chuckle heads out there (see this all the time on Craig's list) A manual trans or stick shift will have 3 pedals, Manual doesn't mean the the T-handle you can manually shift or the 4WD shifter next to it, It means you have to push in the clutch to shift. If you Jeep doesn't have 3 pedals. it's an automatic. (sorry Ronnie, didn't mean to rant)
well, the 2000 will have an airbag and the 88 will not. but maybe you can install it without the airbag, but you will not be able to use the airbag . i have seen people make the switch the other way around and put old style steering wheel into newer style xj... matt has a bleepinjeep video that shows how to install a 88 steering wheel into a 98 xj ua-cam.com/video/qLoQwjOjVkI/v-deo.html
If its the old style with no cap on the rad check for small leaks if the system inst sealed replace the plastic bottle and cap too. This solved my problem. Make sure the fans running as well
Who remembers Cash For Clunkers ? There were morons destroying these engines to trade them in with less than 200K on the odometer. Many of these great trucks were retired early because they were in the wrong hands of morons who don't know Cherokee Jeeps reliability. RIP to those great trucks that lost their lives in that scam.
I should hope to think that they were sadly rotted northern vehicles, where at that time they were only worth a couple thou on the market rotted with a couple hund. Got your point though fully. Duct tape and keep on trucking. Years and years left on the legendary powertrain. Sad. There are custom Jeep places that have XJ's decked out for sale for 30,000. I have a couple and watched them increase handsomely. No doubt thanks to the community organizer! They are 2 doors to boot. A lot rarer. Great examples of these beware of selling. The collectors are circling above.
we have a 96 xj with a 4.0l high output automatic. we love this thing. the only thing we had to replace in the time that we had it was a headlight, battery and a starter.
I live in Australia and I bought a bone stock Jeep Cherokee limited 1996 thing goes hard on the homemade track we have out here and I’ve only had a problem when the radiator cap was left off then we went up a hill and all the coolant tipped out on the hot engine. I thought I blew it but I got out super quick and popped the bonnet to find the radiator cap was off 😂 thank god because when that happened it was a week after I bought it. It’s got a lot of rust at the front of the roof but we fixed that with tape and a bit of diamond plate the we screwed on which stopped the leaking. We also put a roof rack on it and removed the rear seats. Brand new tyres on it but my only issue is the cooling sucks. When I’m out in the bush 4 wheel driving it gets really hot and I’m not sure if it’s the radiator that needs a flush or if the hood needs some vents or so.
Great vid man! I agree with ya. I have owned 5 XJ's ( 91, 93, 96, 00, 01) The only thing that put mine down (91, 93, 96) is road salt because of my terrible New York winters. The engine of the 91 is still going strong in its new home a 1949 M37. I swapped the instrument cluster into the M37 just to keep track of how long this 4.0 will last with good care. So far, 406K miles and counting. I have the engines of the 93 and 96 as well waiting for new homes. They will all probably live on longer than me. lol
I've owned a lot of vehicles in my life, but I love my '99 XJ more than any other due to its reliability, great performance, and ease of repair when I need to make my baby feel better. I treat it like a woman .. buy her stuff when I can, and she pays me back with lots of loving. Long may she run.
To point 1; they are absolutely bulletproof. I have an XJ and a WJ, both with the 4.0, AW4, and SelecTrac t-case. You wouldn't believe how many of my friends thought I was stupid for not getting the V8 because it would be a "dog". Well, at least it will be an old dog someday and I absolutely beat the hell out of it and the XJ. Back when I first bought my XJ it was a to be a back up pizza delivery vehicle to my Civic and a weekend recreational vehicle. It has had a very demanding life under me. I almost back flipped it once bumping a rock on an uphill climb but another rock stopped it by hitting the back bumper hard which required a bit of hammering later to get the tailgate open. My XJ is my Vicky Valencourt; all kinds of messed up but I love her and she loves me back. Back when I only had my TJ I used to say these things weren't real Jeeps, but I suppose you don't know what you don't know.
Awesome video! I've been driving my jeep for 7 years. It was first car when I was 16. I subbed you knowing I'll enjoy your videos. Anyways with the later model xjs (a few years of 97 to 01) the engine and transmission both where built by Toyota as jeep just contracted those parts out to them.
My 96 Cherokee had the trans cooler line smashed closed and it did 4x4 donuts till it boiled the coolant after that I trailed it for 2 years before I sunk it to the dashboard in mud. Ran all the till then
Badass. Love it man. You're right....the aftermarket world is endless. I have an 03 grand Cherokee 4x4. Built like a tank. They were built to be beaten. Tough as nails. The crank shaft sensor replacement is hell to remove on 99 thru 04
My AW4 burnt out last Sunday. I checked the fluid a month ago and it was pink. Checked it today out of curiosity, and it was black. No idea what the hell happened but I'll find out when it's pulled this weekend. Plus I only have 198k miles
I've got 6 of them I'm working on. I've seen some xj's in the pull-a-part junk yard with 3 and 4 hundred thousand miles on the oddometer. Very simple vehicle to repair. !987 to 2001 is the years I look out for to buy.
I had a bad transmission in my automatic 1992 cherokee laredo, I think it didn't get much if any maintenance from the last two owners and the only thing I know about the original owner before them was that they were towing it around behind a RV or something. It lasted a while before finally giving out, it was showing signs of problems for years such as slipping when accelerating too hard and by too hard I mean accelerating to pass in traffic. I have since replaced it and it runs pretty sweet. Sometimes I hate my cherokee, but in the end I always come back to fucking loving it, if I ever tried to sell it I would have a very hard time parting with it and honestly I have had way more problems with mine than anyone else seems to have with theirs so I can only imagine how much they appreciate theirs.
my 93 xj has 198,000. original water pump, t stat, radiator. lol. I'm serious. drained trans every 60k. no issues with it. motor runs great. thanks 😁 for video.
I had a transmission begin to go (I believe that was the issue) on my 1995 Cherokee Sport. When the issues began it had 420,000 kms, and from my knowledge the transmission was bone stock (unsure of any fluid changes from previous owners - I did a tranny flush when the issues started but it didn’t help). As an automatic, it wouldn’t shift out of first unless I moved the gear selector manually from D down to 1-2 and then back up into D, sometimes multiple times before it would begin to shift. It would also downshift really hard if I was too heavy on the throttle. Motor still pulled incredibly well with 420,000kms, would have kept it if I had the money to fix her.
Sweet video and info thanks! I just got my first XJ and I freaking love it, 203,456 miles runs like a champ no check engine light, just need to get the driver door to open, the inside handle is broken and the outside handle won’t open it.. but has a 4” lift and 31” good year wrangler duratac tires...? I think that’s the name! but wheels pretty good!
I did my header last week. I used zero lube on the bolts first. None broke or stripped or even gave me problems. No rust. Was the first time ever I had that happen..but this only jeep I garage kept.this includes the two bolts at the doughnut..they had surface rust . That's all. Came right apart.
'97 ZJ with 275,000 plus miles and amused by the transmission comment. As with any vehicle, maintenance and not beating them up goes a long ways. Girlfriends selling her '97 ZJ and we'll be building her '89 XJ. ;) But it's always nice to see perspectives on Jeep regardless of year and model.
cherokee ronnie you can replace them but it was when I was 16 and didn't have any idea how an automatic transmission functioned. And since they rarely go bad you can get one already pulled out of a wrecker for 200 bucks and less than 100000 miles from the junkyard where I'm at. it was a no brainer to me.
great pic on the front end swap. I love the older style much better than the newer one. most people ruin the old ones when they swap the front end with the new ones. nice xj man
My automatic transmission slips some times but it's still lasting. Lmfao going to modify my jeep to 4x4 soon. So much bashing on that but had this beast since high-school
I had a 1990 I bought new with the 5 speed manual transmission. 30miles/imp. gallon. I sold it 17 years later, with 375,000km. running like a top. I found a 1992 with 197,000 km on it in pretty much mint condition with automatic.
You are wise. Have 2. My not for sale 97 4X4 Sport 2 dr auto with 89,000. And a solid and straight 96 4X2 2 dr manual with 160,000 I may convert. No smoke or drips, but if I convert, proly gonna go through and bump the power and upgrade where will need with the power. 2dr's are so rare and personally I think they are better looking. Hope one day on the trails I will see, Cherokee Ronnie.
Have a 2000 xj with an automatic, it's a azian transmission. It went after the radiator leaked coolant into the transmission fluid. The fluid looked like a strawberry milkshake.
Hey i just picked up a 98 XJ and its missing the starter relay fuel pump relay and something is missing near the air cleaner i think its a computer or something. Need help...it only has 44k miles i am the 2nd owner
Huge question??? The front differential breather connection and hose where in GOD's creation can I get a replacement. They're discontinued and I need to replacement my? Please HELP!
I have had a 98 cherokee sport 4x4 inline of course (delivered pizzas and the orlando sentinel for 140000 miles) it died with over 360 on the odometer. Then for 8 years had a 98 grand 4x4 inline, and put 180000 on it, doing similar jobs.. it died at 353k due to bad bearings and piston skirt breakage. But not until i over heated it like 15 times in the fl summers, and it drove with bad crankshaft bearings for 4 years (just kept a heavy oil in it to help offset my abuse). Im on my 2nd grand (im 6'6" so i needed something bigger than a cherokee) its a 97 4x4 inline(tho has a lot of yankee cancer on it :/ ) its only got 138k on it and sounds like its new. Im sure i can get 10 years and well over 350k on it before it may need a viking funeral.. especially since i dont deliver anything anymore.. thanks for the videos.
I just bought a 1998 2 door 2 wheel drive manual Cherokee and I'm curious will that manual transmission accept a transfer case? I would think that it would be an easy swap into four-wheel-drive with a parts vehicle but I want to keep the manual transmission. I don't usually see Cherokees with stick shifts in my area so I figured around my area it would be hard to find a manual and transfer case combination on a 4x4. Thanks for any information and I'm only asking because I cannot find the information online and I kind a need the answer. My neighbor wants to buy it. If I can't convert the 2 Wheel drive to four-wheel-drive with the manual I think I might sell it to him
7979kelly I highly doubt it, with most 2wd transmissions (if not all of them) they will not accept a transfercase, so to convert it youd need to put a new transmission in it and God knows what else
7979kelly I've done this conversion, you need to find a 4X4 transmission. The 2wd trans won't except a transfer case without some machine work. It's not worth it unless you work at a transmission shop and can do the work for cost.
You know you have a good transmission when you look to buy one at the salvage yards and they are numerous, even after 20 years, and selling for $75-$150.
Blue J 360 depends on how big you want to go and how much gearing you're willing to do, a friend of mine has an i4 with 36s he geared down to 4:80s in the rear top speed of 60 in 5th gear floored but she'll climb a wall no problem.
I've been getting great "random" parts from Amazon. Can look on ebay too. Quadratec I believe is a good site. You can find all kinds of parts for xj's on plenty sites. Just type in the parts you need in Google & you'll be able to find them.
I got a bad transmission on mine but I don't know if it's original, I bought the Jeep close to Mexico and I think it's all rigged with random junkyard parts, the axle doesn't even have any markings like an original axle they put on those Jeeps. that's gonna change soon though.. I love my Jeep, I have a 96 same front end of your Jeep, just all white. I got my heads rebuilt 2 years ago and the engine can last another 30 years my mechanic said.. but I've been contemplating to just go out and buy a 4x4 Jeep already because mine is 2wd. Idk if I'm capable of doing the 4x4 conversion myself.. I know alot but I'ma a newb at the same time
you usually see people swapping the front clip from the newer style on an old body, but +1 for doing the opposite. I highly prefer the older body style
Had 3 xj 2.5 man and the 4 litre but in the uk parts are so expensive BUT there the daddy I smashed the shit out of it never service and still allways worked there getting hard to get now because there so good off road
Yes! Parts are so cheep and never a lack of them. Plus it's such an easy vehical to work on, wide open spaces, you don't run into anything real goofy, it's straightforward.
I love my cherokee! Almost 300 thousand miles and still a beast!

I think that’s the name! but wheels pretty good!
It’s a 96’ not the 96.5 they made
I have a 95 XJ sport 5 speed, love it
I did my header last week. I used zero lube on the bolts first. None broke or stripped or even gave me problems. No rust. Was the first time ever I had that happen..but this only jeep I garage kept.this includes the two bolts at the doughnut..they had surface rust . That's all. Came right apart.

I had an AW4 go on me. Solenoids burned out and destroyed the clutch bands @ 110,000 miles. On my second one now, so far so good.
i heard you can replace them I'm not sure
cherokee ronnie you can replace them but it was when I was 16 and didn't have any idea how an automatic transmission functioned. By the Gods I love my 00 XJ.
Love the outlaw plate
i put the 98 door mirrors on my 90 xj. looks a lot better, easier to see around the vehicle too.
beach bummin that's what I'm doing to mine!
Exactly !! Love them myself!
Have a 2000 xj with an automatic, it's a azian transmission. It went after the radiator leaked coolant into the transmission fluid. The fluid looked like a strawberry milkshake.

Im sure i can get 10 years and well over 350k on it before it may need a viking funeral.. especially since i dont deliver anything anymore.. thanks for the videos.
I’m about to go look at a 91 Cherokee with 130k miles for 1800 what kind of things should I look for problems wise ?
It's not worth it unless you work at a transmission shop and can do the work for cost.
dope outlaw plate!
With the 2000 or 2001 XJ how are those transmissions?
i have had 2 aw4s die on me then again i think 1 was the torque converter but heat is not a friend of that trans
+Ron Matheson I've never had one fail on me yet I'm pretty hard on the aw4
I live in the desert lol its 102 easily here in the summer
Ron Matheson dang! I think last year it got up to 98 here that's about as high as I've seen it
Gotta get yourself a transmission cooler!
had to replace the solenoids in mine
What backspacing is on those wheels? It adds a nice wide stance to your xj vs stock!
You know you have a good transmission when you look to buy one at the salvage yards and they are numerous, even after 20 years, and selling for $75-$150.
How do I fix vapor lock
where did you get that push bar
found it at a junk yard came off a s10
I subscribed
What kind of guard is that one im looking to buy one of those for my cherokee
Luis Cerva it's a s10 guard I made it fit
3 quick questions. 1. Where is a good website/place I can find xj parts? 2. Don't you get fender rub? 3. Will an I4 be ok for larger than stock tires?
Blue J 360 depends on how big you want to go and how much gearing you're willing to do, a friend of mine has an i4 with 36s he geared down to 4:80s in the rear top speed of 60 in 5th gear floored but she'll climb a wall no problem.
I've been getting great "random" parts from Amazon. Can look on ebay too. Quadratec I believe is a good site. You can find all kinds of parts for xj's on plenty sites. Just type in the parts you need in Google & you'll be able to find them.
328,000 miles, still Jeepin. Gonna paint the block yellow and the valve cover black. CAT FTW
I know alot but I'ma a newb at the same time
What year is this Jeep
Where can I get that push bar?
you usually see people swapping the front clip from the newer style on an old body, but +1 for doing the opposite. I highly prefer the older body style
thanks man I just cant get into the newer front clip I think they are ugly but that's just me lol
If they made these new I would still buy one. Looks better than the new stuff.
Lift size?
Tyre size?
286,000 on my 92 with the original AW4, shifts like butter
I want to buy a xj, but what year have a lsd rear dif?
Did you change your tailgate with newer year? How did you make it work with the hinges?
Thanks
It’s a 98 with a 94 front clip swap
@@cherokeeronnie 🤭 a nice looking Jeep
Hey man, my standard Advanced auto parts radiator cap keeps leaking under hot motor/pressure.
What radiator cap is that? Does she hold nice?
From Napa
I like the outlaw license plate😂😂
See you can get a reman engine for like 1300 (ATK) ... good motors ? Reman is quality ?

I've always wanted one, but can't find any for a decent price.
Are the axles off these cheap? Im considering doing a sas to my 94 2wd s10 and im sourcing out the parts and how much it may cost.
What is the low down on the 98 2 door 4wd?
I have one. 270,000 miles and going strong. Daily driver.
did he just say aftermarket tires?
Had 3 xj 2.5 man and the 4 litre but in the uk parts are so expensive BUT there the daddy I smashed the shit out of it never service and still allways worked there getting hard to get now because there so good off road
i beat the crap out of mine. i break stuff but it is all cheap to fix.
Texas Car Nerd that's why I want a jeep, cheap as hell to fix
Yes! Parts are so cheep and never a lack of them. Plus it's such an easy vehical to work on, wide open spaces, you don't run into anything real goofy, it's straightforward.
how much dose a 1999 one go for
3,500 USD
I just bought a clean ass 96 Cherokee for 700 with a blown aw4 lol but I'm replacing it with one with 192k it's gonna run for ever
I subbed anyways I know they stopped making them in 2001 but I think they will be around for a long time don’t you ?
I love your cherokee
When I bought mine we put a 4 1/2 inch lift and big tires and went rock climbing and then jumped it if you want to see the footage go to jeep squad

I've had 5. I've never been able to part ways with my 1st. 99 with 210k. Runs like a sewing machine after all the hell I give it
