    To sum up:
    84-86 = Bad (6 cylinder)
86-90 = Decent years, but sensors
    91-95 = Best years
    96 = "Bastard" transition year
97 = Big changes, terrible wiring problems
98-99 = Best years of the newer styles, still not as good as the older style
    00-01 = Head cracks

2001 the last year is the best Cherokee. All the bugs have been worked out. They will give you a minimum of 200,000 miles of trouble free driving. Mine has 306,000 miles.

I've got a 1996 XJ sport. I specifically bought a 96 for the exact reason he said not to buy one. In 96 it still has the older squarish interior, but is now equipped with OBDII. Even though it can be confusing to source correct parts, to me it's worth it because it's the better interior with the ability to read codes. And honestly, it's not even that bad because so many parts actually are interchangeable. In my opinion, the 1996 bastard XJ's are the best year. But that's just my opinion.

Another benefit of the newer Cherokees (98-01 I believe?) Is the stronger 29 spline 8.25 rear axle over the 27 spline or weaker Dana 35. And I believe it's the 99's that had the bad heads on them. My father has had Cherokees for years and the best one he has now is a 2000 on 35s. They're great, cheap trucks

My 1999 runs like a champ. It must have been made in the middle of the week when everyone was in sync in toledo, because it is solid, just had to overcome the usual 4.0L coolant probs. I just absolutely loved it. I agree completely the 1998 and 1999 seem like the solid late model years for the XJ. Plus from what I have seen, High Pinion D30 was removed in the 2000 and 2001 years.

I had a 92 laredo with the 5sp. I believe 92 is the first year of the good manual trans. No abs too so it had good brakes instead of crappy early year abs. very driveable vehicle. very quick too. ran a 16.1 in the 1/4 mile. drove it until about 170k then sold for 2k.... bad decision.

Hola de Bogota Colombia amigos. XJ Jeep Cherokee 87-01 made in Venezuela at the Valencia plant all came with factory stock Dana 44s front and rear. Choice of 5 speed manual or 4 speed autos. If you want an XJ with Dana 44's look for the first number in the VIN to be 8.

97 & 98 are similar , the new body style was 99. Alot of wiring problems are poor solder joints in the headlight switch unit and the command display unit. I pulled these out and resoldered all the solder joints and fixed most of the weird problems.

I'm thinking my '97 XJ is in the 50% range of not having any wiring problems (thank God) and knock on wood. Both of my XJ's the '96 and '97 have been good ones. Now my '96 was built late in the year and has all '97 parts. No real big problems out of them and has been the most dependable vehicle's I've ever owned. Love them to death. The other Jeep I used to have was a 1981 Jeep CJ-10 was another good one to have. Thanks for another awesome video. Keep on keeping on bro. OlllllllO

Good info! However, I did hear that the new front end on the 97-01's had slightly different fenders with even less space under the fender well. Which, for off-road use, requires trimming the fender opening for anything larger then a 9.5 x 30 tire (235/75 r16). Obviously, sway-bar disconnects will aggravate this problem with larger tires: 245/75 r16 and up.

Thanks for into. My very first car was 1994 Cherokee Sport in Red w/ pinstripe and bullet rims. It was a great car and the AC made a weird noise and smoked a little at red light but it was always dependable. Even though it smoked a little i dont recall it burning oil especially compared to my VW Eos i have now. I loved my Jeep it had wonderful power and got really good gas mileage. The only issues i had was there was no cup holders and manual windows. I also loved the wood grain dash, my Nokia bar phone i had in high school had matching wood grain faceplate. I want to rebuy some of my fave cars i regret letting go now that they are cheaper including my jeep and my 01 Stratus R/T Coupe. I want a newer model and now now 98/99 is my goal cause i do want cupholders airbags and power windows my 94 did not have.

I junked the motor (4 cyl), tranny (flimsy 5 speed) , AC, computer, air bag, and a lot of other unnecessary crap. Now it has a Chevy 327 originally in a '69 Camaro with a Borg Warner Super T-10 four speed. And yes the 327 was rebuilt and all the usual performance goodies equiped. Interior was totally redone too. Now that's the ultimate driving machine.

91-92 are my favorite years really 91-93. My old snapon mt2500 can connect to the renix jeeps and get live data and fault codes. Same with obd1 chrysler 91-95 the renix uses different diagnostic equipment but I have everything to read both and I also have the TCM diagnostic plug for 91-95 with the aw4. I haven't looked to see if the renix years have a TCM diagnostic port though. I've had a lot of cherokees I still have my first one I doubt I'll ever get rid of it and I have a few cherokees out back then my wife dailys a cherokee. I like some older renix interior parts like little doodads and such that are different. I have a big stash of all my favorite interior parts that I snag from the wrecking yards. I've owned a lot of different year cherokees but now I just stick to 91-92, 93 is pretty close to the same too. I'm really picky and like to make things really nice so I've taken apart a lot of cherokees and fixed them up over the years and there's a lot of little differences between years I have a lot of fun working on cherokees. I've worked on a lot of cherokees at various shops I've worked at too. After a while we had a lot of people bringing jeeps in to the shop for me to work on at my last job some people thought we only did jeeps my boss had to make a new sign listing different makes.
We lost a lot of cherokees to that cash for clunkers program years ago which is too bad. I see cherokees are starting to get expensive too and nice examples are getting hard to find which will only drive up the price. I'm not seeing many in my local wrecking yards like I used to either.

Hey Ronnie, loving the videos. They have a lot of great information on them i do enjoy. I have an '01 myself that has ovee 300k on in. I remember in the video you said that the '00s and the '01s had the same casting number. If im not mistaken which I could be wrong I believe the later '01s such as mine had a different cast number than that, which fixed the cracking in between 3 and 4.

An update, they are the same cast number but the cracking was fixed mid 2001.

So, everything is interchangeable. Everything is the same but you don’t like the newer (20yr old) front end. The 00,01 are too luxurious. Is that because they went away from plaid seats?

I was a mechanic in the 80s and any jeep with the v6 run away from it. 96 was a carry over from 95 because they were working on the all new line up for 97. I brought a 97 tj what a pos that was first year it spent a 100 day in the dealership . Say what you want about the 96 Cherokee i love mine and if i need parts i order 95 year parts. I havent tried this for engine parts but my Cherokee is a early 96 and the axels t case breaks are 95 model year.

Hey Ronnie - I really appreciate all of your advice online. Just bought a '96 XJ 6 cyl. w/105k miles. Should I switch to a full synthetic oil?
Do you recommend a certain brand and filter, whether they be synthetic or regular oil?
Last question: tranny seems to shift fine. Should I change fluid? And if so, what brand and type do you recommend?
    Thanks.

Agreed! I have 1999 and love it, I don't mind the pre-1997 models look, but the curves of the 1997-2001 are modern enough to keep it stylish long into the future, but it still has "that classic look".

95 xj owner here. Best. Jeep. Ever. 276k miles and still barging. Bought it as a stangnant yard car for $450.. Just drove it from Washington state to Ohio a few months ago. Recently the starter went out and jumped it over at the column with a paperclip and scavenged speaker wire to get it home. It's an amazing vehicle. My battle wagon is lord of the american wasteland. I'mma get half a million miles outta her without a ton of hassle and wrenching. It's crazy easy to work on.

I'm not sure if it's because of the camera's perspective, but the American flag in the background is improperly displayed. The union is supposed to be on the left side, not the right when hung vertically. Not makin a big deal out of it or anything but thought you should know! :)
