I too can confirm engine swap. I have a 1995 obd1 xj. I bought a used motor from a 1998 obd2 xj took all the sensors from the 1995 and swapped them onto the 1998 motor. Works great. The only thing I had to do was drill and tap the thermostat sensor into the thermostat housing. The 1995 and down heads used 2 thermostat sensors and the 1996 and up used 1 sensor. So if you put a newer engine in an older xj then you’ll have to do that or you just won’t have a temp reading on your guage.
I'm in FL... pushing 100s in summer. 4.0 with stock 195 thermostat and factory 2 row radiator, all cooling parts pretty new and working. Sitting in traffic with AC on (of course) Mine sits only at 210. I tow my 2 jet skis at 65+ mph and it rides about 225-230. Slow down under 20 and it'll cool back down to 215ish. Sitting and idling it'll work it's way back down to about 200. This engine is tough. It's probably been over 230 several times over the years. Barely ever have to do anything to a 4.0. They just work.
Great vid sir and like that shirt ;). I would like to add there is more to 'swapping 4.0's'. Specifically the 2000 with CAFE emissions and all 2001 XJ's. These will have the 0331 head which has smaller exhaust ports. You will need an adapter plate, aftermarket 0331 header (which is good for all three HO heads), or do what I did and just get a header for the 0630/7120 and weld in the O2 bungs.
This guy probably knows more about jeep cherokees than anyone on this planet. New friend here. I have a super rusty 93 Cherokee I refuse to give up on.
Any Xj door will work as long as you use the same door striker the door used. For example I’ve got 97 doors on my 92 Cherokee but I had to use 97+ striker
I HAVE A QUESTION.........I HAVE A HARD TIME DRIVING MY JEEP BECAUSE ITS STANDARD AND I HAVE ONE HAND ON THE STEERING WHEEL AND A BEER IN MY OTHER HAND.. I HAVE A HARD TIME SHIFTING .....SHOULD I JUST TRADE IT IN FOR AN AUTOMATIC ???????
When it comes to the fuel pumps on the XJ I have a 96 XJ and I recently found out that there's only one year of fuel pump that fits that 96 it is a 96. 95 won't work cuz it has two fuel lines going back to the tank and a 97 and up I think the plugs are different.
NICE GARAGE BROTHER . where do you live ? I would love to gain access to your garage . . Playin with you . I am sick of working on mine out in front of the appt till 330 in the morning .
I just recently drove my 93 Cherokee from Chicago to southern Florida. I noticed the center counsel was getting really hot from the transmission. Still shifted smoothly when I would pull off to refuel. Should I worry about the heat issue? The Jeep has 135k miles. Thanks!
My brother in-law; has a 96 Chevy Tahoe . I guess my question is , what kind of rear end & front end is it ? And will it fit on my 96 Cherokee? He is going to part the Tahoe out.
I have a few questions. Can you put an old front header panel and bumper onto a 97 and up? Also for 2001 Jeeps(newer emission set up), can the exhaust manifold be swapped for a header without causing a CEL or 02 sensor problem?
I would rather have an older 4.0 that has plugs and wires . versus the newer coil pack . In fact I would like to go retro in the drive train . To avoid a lot of modern problem . Is this a good idea with jeep or am I better off with my original 2000 model drivetrain as it came .
For adding 4x4 is it possible the extra load would be too much for an engine (I6) that's been running rwd only for like 30 years? What should you be looking out for after the swap?
I can say what was not easy to find last night . I had just painted and old file cabnet with bedliner and trim for a tool box for the rear cargo area . well There is nothing out there saying where one can drill without hitting the gas tank . THERE IS A RUBBER PLUG UNDER THE TUCK IN THE SPARE TIRE MOUNT AREA . I pulled it out and stuck a screw driver through the carpet from below . From here I could base a measurement . 2.5 IN FROM THE HOLE IS SAFE . I still had to drop the tank 3 or 4 in to push through the bolts for the other bracket it came out about the middle of the tank . I couldn't find on video wherein someone installed a rear cargo rack self by drilling . I did find on a forum that you had better drop the tank . Although it didn't go into any specs .
have issues with my 97 Cherokee. wants to stall when cold, or back fire threw intake. when hot runs great. replaced tps, and idel control motor. where to look next
Great job bro. Have one very important questioni I bought a straight 6 inlineheadengine cylinder head, but I didn't notice that it didn't have a coolant temperature sensor on the back by firewall, will it be ok without it or is it possible to drill a hole. What would I do?
My drive shaft is super rusted. It looks like the u joints havnt been replaced in forever I have a vibration at 55 plus miles an hour. It feels like a u joint and my tires are new. Thoughts?
I have had a 98 Cherokee and it got 15 miles to a gallon. This 2000 struggles to get that. I did a fuel injector upgrade and put a new coil pack in it and new plugs and it didn't help! Its a 6 cyl. Any ideas?
Hey Ronnie if the rear of my unibody is rusted out behind the rear wheel where the tow hitch mounts is it still a possibility to lift my jeep or is it dangerous at that point?
What it runs perfect every once in awhile it throws a fit and backfires out the intake I put it in neutral rub it up a little bit back for a little bit and run fine
Nick Kostolnik i have a 93 with a new rad, water pump, and 160 thermostat and the old girl is doing great i will say this its oddseeing it run so cool after 400,473 miles ! No thats not a typo.
Hey man, I have a 99 cherokee sport. any idea why the last 8 or so digits of my vin number would be on every single window? did they ever do this from the factory or is this common for a tinting place to do?
Shows inspectors, insurance agencies, buyers and collectors the glass was factory with matching numbers. Only factory used the glass ID. If not present, they would be replacements regardless of dealer or glass house doing the work and would be obvious to anyone in the know including insurance agencies.
hi, i just become a xj fan, and bought a 1994 4x4, i want to do a rear brake disc conversion and install a limited speed differential, what would u recommend me to use? im kind a confused is front and rear differentials are going to be compatibles because of internal gear sizes.
My 2000 xj ... I change the safety neutral switch but check ingen light still on.. so I changed it again and still light it’s on.. and yes parts where new!! Plz a lil help
Good tips! Sounds a lot like '96 was a year where they tried to use up all the old (95) parts till they were gone, and then made the switch to all the new style parts that were used till the end of the XJ generation.
1996 JEEP CHEROKEE COUNTRY Runs good till motor gets warm then u stop /shut it off and after say 15 mins u start back up it dont want to run and sputters and dies. Wait 10 mins or so then it will start back and run fine till motor gets warm again the same problem. HELP
I heard 98 was problematic, 99 is good, 2000 has the 0331 cylinder head crack from overheat issue, they are all prone to the death wobble, I have a 2001, 4.0L I6 automatic sport, 2wd with 4x4 options and it is a total champ. 245k, motor still runs beautiful. Never went over 215 degreesF. You can check them out at carcomplaints.com, which generate analytics and comparisons of the various model years.
What parts are interchangeable from a 97 Grand V8 to a 96 Cherokee Sport 4.0? I need quite a few things and have a great opportunity to get the Grand for virtually free for a strut swap for the man with the Grand. He says it's basically the same just different trim/engine.
Hey thx for the great videos I have a 96 Cherokee I need several parts for it will are 99 parts interchangeable body parts drive train , suspension, interior and motor accessories.
Awesome Vid. you should also mention the different years that had 27 or 29 spline axles and what had high pinion Dana 30 and what had Low Pinion. I would say, but I'm not 100% sure, and I don't want to give bad information.
are wheel spacers good for a jeep xj? because i have a 3 1/2 inch lift with 31x10.5x15 wheels and i rub when i turn my wheel all the way either way. thinking about getting 2inch spacers so there wouldnt be an issue with that,
2 inch aint bad you hear people say spacers are bad for a jeep but they are running wide rims which have the same effect as wheel spacers it puts some wear and tear on your ball joints and wheel bearings but not like people say I been running mine for two years on road and off i put one wheel bearing on the driver side i aint had a problem with it when it rains it drives funny sometimes because of the water on the road but other than that i like mine
Question . What tires can I throw on my stock 15 inch wheel to gain an in to 1.5 in in height ? I finished my roof rack a couple weeks ago and with my tool boxes in the rear combined with the roof rack my rear is sagging on the 2000 xj . I just bought gabriel hijackers air shocks for the rear . To lift . I will be putting those on tomorrow although in the mean time I took most of the tools out and the spare . Which I plan on trowing on top after shocks . I was hoping I could get slightly higher tires to give me a little lift without a lift kit . I go down some dirt roads and go around traffic sometimes on the shoulder . Although I am not ROCK CLIMBING or MUDDIN . As I am getting old and I live in central fl . No mountains for rock climbing jeeps here anyway . LOL
timothy thomas i had sagging when adding weight in the back. i added a Zone short add-a-leaf (cost $40) to the bottom of the rear leaf pack. the added leaf stoped the pack sagging so much when adding the extra weight. shocks alone wont help support the weight.
So the leaf helped ? I have heard that some of the add a leaf mod's don't hold to long . That within a year or so they wear out . Is the one you mentioned above zone short a good one and how long did it work or is it still working for you ? I am going to see if I can find one . The air shocks are for now keeping the back from going lower than the front . I am about even at this time. I have the weight from the roof rack . I had taken the two 34 in x 13.5 in ,old school plastic tool chests out after adding the rack . Since installing the Hi jacker air shocks . I instead added an vintage steel 2 draw file cabinet to the cargo area . It looks good as I painted it Black with Brown trim and added some treaded rubber edges across the Right and left top edges . And finnally wrapped the handles in leather . The rubber and leather I applied with a spry adhesive by 3m . Then After seeing all the organised cargo spaces on google pictures and pinterest .So if facing the rear cargo area from the back . The cabinet is bolted down on the left where about 3.5 to 4 in from the drivers side rear tire hump . I wanted a shelf back there so as I wouldn't be stacking stuff on stuff . I had found some wire shelving the rubber coated kind free . I plan to add steel tubing at some point . So coming off the open right facing side of the metal file cabinet I riveted in a Piece of angle iron . In this case some free bed frame steel . To the right facing side of the cabinet wall about 3/4 of the way up the cabinet . I then attached the wire shelving to the angle iron and it runs just below the very back passenger side cargo window . So I ended up replacing most of the tools I had in there . I may have cut some weight although not much . I also since I had it empty ran wire grate grid on the back and side cargo windows . This allows me to hang a some of the things I use the most . I really like it opposed to the way I had things before . I had the 2 lift top- wide boxes in the rear with stuff always on top of them and stuff stacked beside them as well . I had to take stuff out to find or get to what I needed and it was a major production putting things back . . This system is more efficient better looking and more secure . I say secure because anything I want to keep safe I can lock in the cabinet . And even if someone were to break in to the truck . With out a key to open the back door they would have to cut through the back of the cabinet with a sawzall or something similar . The reason being is there isn't enough room for to work with the back door shut .There isn't enough room to work on it. Thank You for the tip on the leaf . God Bless
timothy thomas i had put in a Rough Country 3in lift with new full leaf packs and their 2.0 shocks. it sat fine intill putting kids and gear in the back it would sag almost 2in. i changed the shocks to bilstines and added the zone 2-3in lift add-a-leaf under the Rough countrys leaf packs soo im not using the add-a-leaf to reshap old worn out leaf springs just to help reinforce the new leaf packs. now it doesnt sag and still rides good.
Cherokee Ronnie on my 1990 jeep xj it will start and idle fine and rev good. but as soon as u drive it starts to back fire out exhaust. dose the erg valve have to work on these?
Cherokee Ronnie my name is Gabriel from STL and my run t 170 with a stock flushed radiator and it runs up 210 for 5 min in traffic then it cools down again . is this a problem?
Ethan Copple Yes. But you’ll just run into tons of rubbing as the offset is wrong. Side note: you can fit 31’s with no lift. Just expect very little flex.
Thank you for the advice Ian Logan I am gonna loft it though in the future atleast 4 inches just enough I clear them don’t plan to do any major off roaring or anything but you know just enough to get some fun
Looking at a made 99,2000 cherokee. It's trans fluid is brown but it didn't smell burnt just old. Is that a bad sign? Gonna be doing a fluid and filter change with the owner I'm friends with. He says it shifts fine, thing looks like it hauls Ass. Might be the Ho 4.0.....only looken at it cause my 02 ram has a rear axle that's going out and I can't afford the almost 2k repair bill and wont be for long while. We were gonna a trade in return the owner would build anything I want for the jeep, rock sliders bumpers etc. Being he works at a metal fab shop. Frame is solid floor had a tiny bit of rust as well as some body rot not bad he cut most it out. I can get all the repair panels I need they are cheap I've seen. I'm just being sure I ain't gona have ain't trans die. I've already had that before with my ram and it's out of rebuild warranty now.
babar mirza it's the computer. The little soldered connections inside go bad. Trust me, I changed mine for a rebuilt unit. Hasn't pulled a code in almost a year now.
Brother I love wing windows . That is nice to have when ac goes out .
Amen on that one we also called that the smokers window or the fart snatcher LOL 60 mile an hour air conditioner Etc ahahahahah
i just bought a 98 cherokee and i'm lovin it!!
jan3019 I have had my 98 since 2003. I love it like an old friend. It’s getting a new engine right now an will be back on the trails soon.
I just got a 98 too! 4.5 on 32's
Vent windows are the best! Harvested some the boneyard for my old 86... they were such a great addition!

Does the 1994 Jeep Cherokee have a EGR valve and if so where is it located?
what about running a 160 degree thermostat? Would it help to run cooler?
Nick Kostolnik i have a 93 with a new rad, water pump, and 160 thermostat and the old girl is doing great i will say this its oddseeing it run so cool after 400,473 miles ! No thats not a typo.

timothy thomas i had put in a Rough Country 3in lift with new full leaf packs and their 2.0 shocks. it sat fine intill putting kids and gear in the back it would sag almost 2in. i changed the shocks to bilstines and added the zone 2-3in lift add-a-leaf under the Rough countrys leaf packs soo im not using the add-a-leaf to reshap old worn out leaf springs just to help reinforce the new leaf packs. now it doesnt sag and still rides good.
Cherokees should run near 210 or so
Can you put a v8 motor in a 2001 Cherokee sport
I have a question. can I swap a newer dash to an older jeep? I have a 89 and want a 97-01dash..
Anhuar Martinez I think you can but it requires trimming of the new dash. it's a little bigger that the older style if I remember correctly.

Ford Explorer wheels fit on a jeep too
Makes the steer harder tho
Thanks very helpful
Can I fit 31x10.50/15s on my stock wheels? Don’t wan to buy new wheels if I don’t have to
Ethan Copple Yes.
Should clear with a 2" lift. It's what I have on mine. But taller is always better!
Does it clear comfortably with a 2 inch? If so then 3 inch is the middle option I don’t know I’m confusing with this shot ha
Ethan Copple I’d go 3” just for piece of mind.
Great video.
Always wanted a jeep and this guy is willing to give me 500 cash as well including all the custom new work.

Check for a loose battery or alternator cable. Also corrosion in the battery cables
