This song was the official start of the '90s decade, released March 27, 1990, a watershed moment in American popular music as nothing would ever be quite the same ever again. All that came before it suddenly became part of the past. BV (before Vogue) and AV (after Vogue) is how it defined the music scene, not just in the US, but around the world. As such, it very much deserves to be among the greatest American popular music milestones of the XXth Century. I would also add that the song itself represents the continuing legacy of how minorities continue to shape the poplar culture in this country. In this case, African-American and Gay cultures. In fact, the intense subversive vibe the song carries has elevated it to the level of an anthem of defiance and empowerment.
