Sorry bud, but "16bit" and "8bit" are worthless descriptors. Almost no pixel art games actually use a colour palette/pixel density comparable to the 8/16bit era.
The art in this game is orders of magnitude more intricate than the 16bit machines could do.
The snes could only do 256 colours on screen, and i believe the NES could only do 54.
So 99% of what people describe as "16bit" or "8bit" is still infinitely more complex than that.

I love this series and there really is a power in just being to the point. I will never cease to be amazed at how you all say everything needed in 3 minutes ish whilst others can spin out 15+ minute reviews. Great review and very excited for this game- my brain totally remembers Golden Sun looking like this (it doesn't but kid me thought it was incredible)

    • @theescapist

Most reviews should be this long if you cut out all the fluff telling players “how” to play the game, listing out all the customization options and being overly spoiled.
Always treated 3MR like a series that you’re just recommending a game to a friend. Most friends won’t listen to you ramble on for 10 min about a game lol.

@@theescapist It's the perfect length! Many YT channels don't respect the viewers' time pad things out unnecessarily, either intentionally (for monetization reasons) or unintentionally. I love channels that cut out all the fluff and get straight to the point, respecting viewers' time and not wasting it.

In 1998, aged seven, I played Chrono Trigger for the first time. I couldn't play well yet because I was too young and didn't understand English but the experience left an impression on me: the Millennial Fair games, the fight against the robot Gato (this is my kindest memory), the dramatic problem involving Lucca's teleportation machine, the battle system and beautiful graphics. That style of game became a passion, and then I learned it had a name: "RPG". Around the same time, I also discovered Super Mario RPG at a local videogame store, and that was another game which really marked my childhood.
Sea of Stars comes as a great celebration of this style that marked an era and consecrated itself as immortal. It's great to see that there is a community that still appreciates it and that there are talented people drawing inspiration from it and developing new games. Da Vinci is to Renaissance art what Square is to RPG, and Sabotage Studio proves itself as a virtuous new team following the steps of the Masters.

Writing is definitely one of Sabotage Studios’ strong points, and Rainbowdragoneyes is probably the best chiptune musician on this or any other planet. Yasunori Mitsuda’s involvement just adds a cherry on top of that. I didn’t realize that this actually shared a world the The Messenger. I hope there’s some kind of cheeky references in there. The reviewer mentions backtracking being a chore because of the combat style but you're able to run by most mobs without issue something older games had a much smaller window for. The game provides various quality of life options as well in the form of amulets you buy at shops on the cheap to change gameplay and make it easier from ignoring the defense buffs , auto heal after every battle, increase the window of counters and extra hit or auto does it for you. You simply toggle them on or off. Basically curating the game to play your style.

This is one game that I consider mediocre across the board. It's not the kind of game that I just can't put down, but it's good enough that even though I very frequently do put it down, I'm still inclined to pick it back up again. From the constant turn based battles to the dialogue and innumerable cut scenes (none of which you have any input on) to the very linear progression of the story and upgrades that doesn't give you choices to suit your playstyle. There are so many things that could have been better which ultimately fell flat for me. The most engaging part of the game was the mini-game, "wheels" which I had lots of fun with at first, but once I had all the figures, I used a particular combo that left me unbeatable and I easily won the last few bouts of the game. All in all, this game is OK. Not great, but not bad. I'll finish it but will never replay it or even think about it once I'm done.

I can't believe I get to play this game. Someone finally made that game. It's so fun. 10/10 doesn't really do it justice.

You have to make me care for the characters before forcing me through a flashback training montage for an hour. Beautiful game plagued by amateur writing and horrible pacing.

It's always a nice surprise when a game you got behind on Kickstarter manages to escape the usual space of mediocre to good enough and manages to be a genuinely good game.

On some level I do *know* it's a good game, but I don't feel it at all. After several hours the story seems as repetitive, predictable and linear as in the first 10 minutes, the heroes are rather dull and perfectly one dimensional. I don't feel emotionally invested in anything they're doing and hate their bright and plastic dialogues like from a children's book. They are basically young brainwashed conscripts with no real personalities. The closed world and levels that always feel small and tight, make it basically a platformer game - as linear as the story.
There's no real mystery to solve, no stakes to feel, no people to relate to, no game loop to get hooked. It's not that I don't like it at all. Without a nostalgic factor I just couldn't become interested in the game.

@thesmitty467 absolutely adored messenger and already loving this game too. Not every game is for everyone, but that's fine you didn't care for it. Enough people like their stuff to be successful so that those of us that do enjoy it can look forward to more.
