As a owner of this sprayer I have to say I haven’t had the pump issue. However, I hate the fact that once the liquid gets under a certain amount it doesn’t pump out anything. Leaving me with about 6-8 oz of product still to get out. 🤬

Good job. I've been using these daily for the past couple years and can echo everything you said here, the other issue I've had multiple times is the hose getting brittle either up by the wand or down not the tank base and spraying everywhere. Just recently I had one where the wand fell off in my hand. That was awesome
I bought the 40 volt model...the only problem that I have ever had was the cap being hard to get on and as you mentioned rinsing it out is a pain.I partially solved the screw cap problem by putting a little grease on the grooves...works much smoother
I have had two of these the motor runs good the problem with these is the design the metal housing where the hose comes from the bottom is sharp and cuts the hose over a period of time ...I use the alientabi now and no problems
I had pump issue once. I clean it thoroughly after each use and run the pump through with clean water. Haven’t had the issue again. I do hate that it’ll leave some goodies at the bottom of the tank though.
Just bought one today, first thing I did was using 1000wt silicone oil to the threads and o-ring on the lid, could use silicone grease just as easy. Top goes on fast & quick once it gets some lube that won't wash off.
I've had the same problem with my sprayer too, but I have found a solution to it and now it emptys all the liquid from the container. When I get a chance I'll upload a quick video explaining the problem.
I usually use the larger battery for it or if it looses pressure I usually twist the knob the opposite way from high to low while still holding down the trigger
I just bought (5/29/24) the Ryobi P2806 backpack sprayer. Right off the bat, that cap is worthless. I took it off to look inside the tank when I tried to put it back on, it cross treaded...! I'll be using it for the first time, tomorrow. We'll see how it goes.
Hey everyone, just commenting in regards to the pump issue.. I’ve had this issue on the 15l and 7.5l.. it is due to the filters clogging. Simply need to clean them out. For the 15l one it is at the bottom of the container, it pulls out easily and then just needs to be cleaned out (looks similar to a dish washing filter) for the smaller unit, the line that feeds the chemical through has the filter on the end of it, at the tip. It simply Pulls off however this filter is a very small metal grate, so be careful not to lose it. Once washed all will run perfectly fine again.
I just switched to this unit from the Milwaukee M18 backpack. I am a Milwaukee fan boy, but they dropped the ball in a major way with the backpack sprayer. I've had 4 stop working and finally gave up! One would expect more for a $300 sprayer. So far, I'm liking the Ryobi, especially getting it for $69 on a Father's Day special. A funny comparison, I see several comments complaining about this sprayer having 6 ounces or so left in the tank and not spraying. Me and my wife were thrilled when we saw "how empty" the tank got in comparison. The Milwaukee would often have 1/3 a gallon or so left. I learned the hard way, don't try too hard to tilt the tank or get it to spray the remaining portion or the motor would burn up in no time, ridiculous.
@@TheLawnMentor me neither, I wrote them my concerns. Of course, they have no desire to respond to a customer; they'll just keep pumping out the defective product. I couldn't even guess how many thousands I have invested in Milwaukee tools, very didappointing.

I seen a guy do a write up on a forum that was having pump issues, he pulled it apart and found the hose to goes from tank to pump had a kink in it as it does a 90 degree bend into the pump. So I'll fix it and keep on spraying.

Good review, thanks! I’ve had the same sprayer for about a year and a half and have had no pump priming issues. The rubber covering on the hose where it connects to the backpack split but didn’t leak. I used some epoxy, wire loom and a few zip ties to fix it and give it a little more support. Apart from that, no issues so far. I agree about the lid, it does t screw on easily and it tends to leak out of the top vent of you move too much. I also agree that cleaning out the tank is a pain because of the shape and the flat tops. Apart from that, I like it and use it every few weeks.
You didn't say if you had the 18 volt model or the 40 volt model?? Well, I don't want any pump issues so should I go with the DeWalt four gallon backpack sprayer for $300 at Home Depot? I just need a backpack sprayer that will work four to five times without any issues because I'm trying to kill the creeping bent grass in my front lawn using "Tenacity".

I just got mine. When I turn the dial to lower PSI, it makes that Eeeeeeee sound non stop. Once I turn the PSI all the way up or to a certain point at a higher PSI, the Eeeeeee sound stops. Does yours do that or did I get me a lemon?
The spraying/pumping issue could be due to the fact it accumulates dirt in the bottom of the unit? Mine sat down for a few weeks with solutions in it. The solutions calcified and formed tiny debris that clogged the small removable filter in the bottom of the unit. The unit started to pump fine again once i popped out the unit and cleaned it.
My handle cracked. I don' like the nozzle. I found out you can replace the handle with Chapin red handle and use Chapin nozzle which works much better. I thiink the problem with last half gallon doesn't pump is placement of intake is too high. Sometimes I have to tilt a little and let it pump to put more out. But I'm still left with 8 oz or so. I pour it out into a gallon sprayer to finish up.
I have been having pump issue! It needs to be prime! I would check liquid is coming, then hold it up high, then go thru a few cycle. I keep doing it until it start flowing. It is a big headache. Bad design!
That is the one item I still haven't invested in yet. Thanks for the honest review. Something I will consider for this season. I have used the Ortho and even the Pro Ap sprayer but the coverage is not as precise as a pump sprayer.
I only have pressure drop issues if I don't clean out my tank and the filter. If I clean those after every use I never have pressure drop and it always sprays the entire tank. Leaving behind just a few drops in the bottom that I just drain out. If you don't fill the tank through the grate filter at the top of the tank you can get dirty and grass in the pump causing issues as well. As long as you clean and maintenance the tank it works fine in my experience. I use it commercially spraying around 400-600 gallons per season (800-1200 gallons a year). Been using it for 3 years now. Always run clean water through the pump before you store it to clean out residual chems in the line and pump housing.
I bought two of these a year ago. One worked for 2 minutes then the pump quit. Home Depot rep got Ryobi rep on the phone. No help from Ryobi but Home Depot refunded the money for the first one. The second one died one year later. Same problem, pump just dies. When it worked it was great but just can’t keep it running. Do you know what type fitting it uses on the screws. It’s difficult to tell, could be star, could be hex? Very disappointing.
I have a brand new 40v ryobi backpack sprayer. Right out of the box, it’s having the pumping issue and I cannot get it to prime. I’ll have to keep messing with it based on your video and some of these comments.
I have about 6 of these. Much better than the older version. BUT, trying to Change the hose at the machine side is an issue. First, you need a star tip driver, that is NOT just a tip from a ratchet set because the adapter is too big to fit in the groove. THEN you need another star tip with the hole in the center just to get the hose off the pump. The house has a metal clamp which is crimped on, so you can't just cut the hose, where it will WILL leak or tear.
Yes, terrible that they designed it to not be able to replace the poor quality hose it comes with , my hose lasted less than 5 months .Why would they design it that way, so mad...
@@TheLawnMentor Are they all like that? That's dangerous, when i bent over to get under my areca palms to spray the weeds like a cup of DXLR8 and FusiladeII spilled on my back. I hope they make one air tight. ty sir
I’m looking for something that can help me spray my large backyard because it’s full of weeds and the little hand pump I have is just too tiring. I have a company taking care of pesticides and ants so I only want to use this for weed killing, am I on the right product or should I look at something else?
I've been using this sprayer for about 2 years now, and I added a proper T-Jet nozzle last year. At its max setting, I think this sprayer outputs the water pretty slowly compared to some of the better sprayers I've seen others use on UA-cam. For my 3000 sq ft plot, I need to take these little 1/2 foot steps very slowly and then return back in the next row at about a shoulder width from where I was. If I do that, I spray about 3 gallons over the 3000 sq ft space, but it just seems like I'm moving pretty slow to accomplish the spray, where as everyone else looks like they get to walk a regular pace. Just something to keep in mind.
Yeah well you using a sprayer that's not designed to spray 3,000 square-foot it's designed to spray around the house to some crack and crevice and spa treatment broadcast on some flower beds and some eaves around doors and window frames if you do that with it it'll hold up and it'll treat just fine you'll use about four gallons for every house should do which is sufficient you're trying to do agricultural Pest Control you need to step up and get a better sprayer
Spraying the tank isn't going to do anything for that type of sprayer you ought to know that it's suction pads similar to gravity fed you know you don't build up pressure so you don't spray back into the tank he just wants it starts siphoning properly it's going to work spraying the tank won't help with pressure at all but it will mix the pesticide or whatever you are using
Thanks for this comment. I’ve had this sprayer for almost 3 seasons now and nobody says anything about the output rate. I thought I was the only person walking like a zombie to get the correct amount out lol. I figured maybe these UA-camrs are speeding up the video. Still an awesome tank, just gotta walk REALLY slow.
I use several Ryobi sprayers. Mostly I like them. But the sprayer does not use all the chemical in the tank. There is always about a half gallon left! So you have to carry the extra weight but you can’t use it. Very annoying. The hoses eventually fail and are very difficult to change as they require a special screwdriver! So far I’ve just temporarily retired those sprayers until I get the tools. Apparently also the hose is not a common diameter so you have to use one from Ryobi.
My hose sprung a leak where it enters the unit. I fixed that by removing the steel crimp clamp and cutting the hose and reusing the female nut. Now, my issue: where the hose connects to the wand, this is leaking. I am pretty sure after removing the wand, I may have a missing piece. I do have the rubber washer and the little insert that fits into the hose, but the hose just seems to be coming out of the nut and spraying all over the place...can you help?
Could it be that your container is just dirty and it clogs your hose up? Looking at the cap it has a lot of debris and the inside of the container looks dirty. A hand sprayer gets clogged the same way so will a pump sprayer.
Ryobi makes two different ones of the 4 gallons and I think another smaller one, I own both of the 4 gallons versions, they both do lose pressure when the liquid is low, otherwise they both work perfect for me, I use one strictly for weed killer and the other one for no chemicals like neem oil. My only complain with both is their hose, with some of my fruit trees are near 20ft tall there's no way to reach the top branches with their 15" hose & I don't want to try something that is not made for it, I wish Ryobi or Home Depot do something about it.
That's why I bought it, because I already have a line of tools from Ryobi... I'm actually a Milwaukee guy, but price wise and my budget said the Ryobi on this one...
I had the Ryobi that's the one just before that one with 18 volt battery I use it for professional Pest Control been using it for about three years it's been great all the sudden though I was out doing a job with it and just stopped so I don't know if it's a battery or if it's the motor I'm looking into that right now but prior to that at work great the hose I did have to replace the hose and the chips and The lawns that's just because of professional use I preferred having more versatility with the type of spray pattern that I was using that what then what came with it but other than that it ran great and I used two or three different backpacks battery-operated before that that would only hold up about six months those were the ones with the normal like motorcycle size battery don't don't bother with those type
I’ve never used the SprayMate myself but I have several friends who like their SprayMate. Alternatively, I’ve been using the petra backpack sprayer and enjoying it. No issues to report. Use code THELAWNMENTOR at checkout with petra to get some money off!
I have this sprayer and it is a tank, it sprays everything all year last year with no issues whatsoever , I dont take the time to clean it probably as good as I should but it just always works until.... this season putting out some certainty to get rid of some poa. I guess im going to have to take it a part a little and see what's going on but it sounds like it wants to pump and it makes like two attempts and then just stops. I had to go back to my manual Chapin backpack sprayer and it really made me appreciate the Ryobi. I dont have the issue of it losing pressure when its low, it always just sprayed everything. It's not easy to clean which is probably why I dont do it as often. but I guess it's time to take it apart for a deep clean. I hope the pump starts working again, not sure if that is the same issue you were having or not.
Owned it for a few years .. sometimes a lil slow to prime, the cap is not just you .. The threads are horrible.. also can't seem to get the straps adjusted right and my left shoulder gets rubbed form the top of the tank .. but for what I paid .. @@TheLawnMentor Oh hey I meant to mention to you a product called Gallery 75DF (Isoxaben 75%) it's a dry flowable pre emergent .. 1st it's expensive ..BUT .. It is the tool you were always missing .. Where Prodiamine & Dithiopyr are for grassy weeds this is for broadleaf's. I Have a 2nd lot beside my main lot.. It had become overgrown into almost a field. Well the dreaded Dog Fennel & (and far as I knew there was no pre emergent that would control it) decided to live there in the field and went to seed going all into my beautiful Bermuda. It was everywhere.. so I sprayed with SpeedZone early spring and moved over to 3 way into the mid spring.. I could not keep up with it.. and it was driving me crazy 😥😥 ... you know the feeling. Anyway I sprayed it in mid March as soon as I received the Gallery, and of course I expected more that had already germinated but was hoping it would prevent new ones from germinating. So I went to hand pulling for a few weeks and lo and behold around mid April there was no more Dog Fennel !! .. It was nothing short of a miracle. I just wanted to share this with you so you could check it out if not familiar with it .. oh & Dandy's and other broadleaf's .. NONE!! as an extra bonus I always get Chamber Bitter along the edges of the property .. NONE ! It also covers Spurge and a handful of others. Sorry to write a book but hopefully this will come in handy for you as well as your UA-cam followers. Have a great day ..
after working flawlessly for 2 years, mine decided today that it wasn't going to work. It won't even make the audible sound. NOTHING. I know it's not the batter since I tried it in a new sprayer that worked fine. It appears these things have a short life span, which is actually what I was expecting.
My sprayer stopped working after about a year. Dont have the receipt from Home Depot, so they washed their hands off. Called Ryobi and they said I have talk to home depot. So basically will have to buy another one. Very disappointed
It sounds like you are getting too much of a negative pressure inside the tank causing your loss of priming. So much so that air is coming into the pump through the wand, and un-priming it.
@@TheLawnMentor k, I just watched your first video. On the lid there might be a flap or a rubber washer that acts as an air inlet valve. As the pump is running it should create enough of a negative pressure to pull that valve down and let air into the top of the tank. Maybe play with that and make sure the hole is large enough to let air in. If it looks like there are moving parts or a spring in with that valve, add a touch of vegetable oil to act as a lubricant.
@@TheLawnMentor I agree with @patthemaniaful. I would only recommend now if you buy the HD warranty... Sucks to do, but taking it to a service center is a mess. Not worth the drive or the cost to mail.
I am not usually a warranty guy but this unit has been really problematic. I also have a PetraTools backpack sprayer and it has been much much more reliable.
@@TheLawnMentorI bought 1 and waiting for another sale for second. I'm thinking the hose inside is crimped, because there was no 90° installed on the Ryobi 18v. Just a manufacturer defect, but easy to fix
@@TheLawnMentor Well, I have to report that my second sprayer came down with the same issue!!! ARGH....., but it's not what I thought. The surfactant I was previously using coagulated with the product being sprayed. So I switched surfactants and this showed no signs of coagulation until I mixed in another "stinger" product. It then coagulated like crazy!!! Both filters were clogged solid (1 after only 1 gallon sprayed! ) and there was stringy and globular debris in both tanks. So it was case of incompatibility as far as I can tell. Unless the tank itself is "melting" from the the products used, all will be well, I hope! LOL
No one ever wants a product to not work so they have to take it back to the store. Duh! Shit happens because life isn't perfect. The important thing is that a company line of products work a very high percentage of the time, and WHEN shit happens, they respond in a meaningful and fair way.

Yeah I mean the 40v is still a 4 gallon tank, so…
I bought two of these a year ago.
I can’t believe how many people have issues with this sprayer!
I have a brand new 40v ryobi backpack sprayer. Right out of the box, it’s having the pumping issue and I cannot get it to prime. I’ll have to keep messing with it based on your video and some of these comments.
Were you using straight water?
@@TheLawnMentor no. 12 oz triazicide mixed with 4 ga of water. Found how “easy” it was to pour out. Never even got a spurt or dribble out of the hose
Yikes! Never a fan of stuff that isn’t easy to work on….6? Why 6?
Yes, terrible that they designed it to not be able to replace the poor quality hose it comes with , my hose lasted less than 5 months .Why would they design it that way, so mad...
i think mine is defective, i cant lean over or the liquid spill from the top on to my back. or is this normal?
Liquid will come out of the rubber stopper in my lid, but not from the threads
@@TheLawnMentor Are they all like that? That's dangerous, when i bent over to get under my areca palms to spray the weeds like a cup of DXLR8 and FusiladeII spilled on my back. I hope they make one air tight. ty sir
@@kevindaniels4302 trust me I had leaking glyphosate on it and it freaked me out. Idk, but I think it’s a poor design
I want to stain my deck, do you think I can use stain with it? What type of liquids will it accept. Thanks
I believe so but check with the manufacturer
I’m looking for something that can help me spray my large backyard because it’s full of weeds and the little hand pump I have is just too tiring. I have a company taking care of pesticides and ants so I only want to use this for weed killing, am I on the right product or should I look at something else?
How big is your lawn?
Thanks for commenting’
Id take it back or call the place you bought it from. Thats terrible
Thanks for the update!
My pleasure Rich!
Could it be that your container is just dirty and it clogs your hose up? Looking at the cap it has a lot of debris and the inside of the container looks dirty. A hand sprayer gets clogged the same way so will a pump sprayer.
I think that’s just Humic acid stains. I always rinse my container out and mix fresh batches
Crazy to hear people are still having that issue of pressure loss. Thanks for sharing your experience
The first thing I noticed on mine was how difficult the lid is to screw on.
YES! Totally agree.
That's why I bought it, because I already have a line of tools from Ryobi...
I'm actually a Milwaukee guy, but price wise and my budget said the Ryobi on this one...
Hope it serves the purpose for you!
Ya, me to... The weeds get out of wack over here .. Especially this year were we had so much rain... So. Cal.
@@spencerladd2496 that’s what I’ve heard!
On my 3rd one. Typical ryobi junk
The dewalt sprayer is awesome
Never tried it! What do you like about it?
Just got one. excited to use it.
Let me know how you like it
I had the Ryobi that's the one just before that one with 18 volt battery I use it for professional Pest Control been using it for about three years it's been great all the sudden though I was out doing a job with it and just stopped so I don't know if it's a battery or if it's the motor I'm looking into that right now but prior to that at work great the hose I did have to replace the hose and the chips and The lawns that's just because of professional use I preferred having more versatility with the type of spray pattern that I was using that what then what came with it but other than that it ran great and I used two or three different backpacks battery-operated before that that would only hold up about six months those were the ones with the normal like motorcycle size battery don't don't bother with those type
The Ryobi has been a nightmare for me
Pump stopped working?
It has its days where it doesn’t want to keep pressure. I’ve dedicated this sprayer to glyphosate now
Great update Kyle 👍🏼
Thank you sir 😃
Great review 👍🏾
Thanks BYD!!
thanks for the information, good video
Try flowzone 2.5 typhoon one of the best
I’d like to try a flowzone - I hear they’re one of the best!
Just about to go to amazon and see if one exists. Then saw you RYOBI at the bottom of my search results.
😀😀
Mine leaks near the spray end... and always liquid sits in the end. Bad design!
The hose on my separated at the bottom. Callled Ryobi and they said that part had a 30 day warranty lol
Of course…its always something
Is the Milwaukee Backpack Sprayer Better?
I have never used it myself
Hi, how long does the battery last?
I can’t recall exactly but I want to say I’ve gotten at least 4 tanks out of it with a 1.5aH battery - though I think it comes with a 2aH
‘A beginner getting into backpack spraying ‘ 😆
Is the spraymate better then this
I’ve never used the SprayMate myself but I have several friends who like their SprayMate. Alternatively, I’ve been using the petra backpack sprayer and enjoying it. No issues to report. Use code THELAWNMENTOR at checkout with petra to get some money off!
I cant get mine to spray out of the box I hear the pump going but nothing will spray I also dont like the lid
I’d take it back
I have this sprayer and it is a tank, it sprays everything all year last year with no issues whatsoever , I dont take the time to clean it probably as good as I should but it just always works until.... this season putting out some certainty to get rid of some poa.
I, unfortunately, have heard many people had issues. Thanks for sharing your experience with everyone
Owned it for a few years .. sometimes a lil slow to prime, the cap is not just you .. The threads are horrible.. also can't seem to get the straps adjusted right and my left shoulder gets rubbed form the top of the tank .. but for what I paid .. I love it .. life is much easier with it than a can or backpack with pump handle .. I use it for weed killer and all my pre emergent apps .. overall a solid buy
If you’re ready for a change ever, check out the Petra hd4000!

😔😔
I took mine out today to spray some pre emergent, it does not spray it just makes noise when I turn on the button thats all..
It seems like you either get a dud with this one or a good one. Might want to take it back to Home Depot
@@TheLawnMentorits about year old, it worked fine for me last year and this spring.
@@AJ-ds9xq maybe the pump went bad or the wand is clogged
@@AJ-ds9xqany update? You fix it?
@@Kylewraps Yes it was the pump but it was still under warranty so I called Ryobi, they replaced it with new one.
try using a high performance battery.
I have tried every battery I own for these tools and it does the same thing with the pump 🤔
Thanks😊
My sprayer stopped working after about a year. Dont have the receipt from Home Depot, so they washed their hands off. Called Ryobi and they said I have talk to home depot. So basically will have to buy another one. Very disappointed
Buy something else!
It sounds like you are getting too much of a negative pressure inside the tank causing your loss of priming. So much so that air is coming into the pump through the wand, and un-priming it.
Might be the case but I have no idea what would cause that. I’ve had it happen with like 2.5 gals in the tank still
@@TheLawnMentor are you over filling it at all?
Never. My lawn requires 3.5 gallons of water
I’ll have to give it a shot
I like my ryobi backpack sprayer. Key to success…Buy the warranty and run the crap out of the sprayer. If it breaks the warranty has it covered
It got the job done!
Have you tried the Ryobi 40v backpack sprayer?? It has a 90psi spray. Also it holds a longer charge. Tell me what you think.
I haven’t because I heard people had the same issues. I’m happy with the PetraTools one I have
@@TheLawnMentorI bought 1 and waiting for another sale for second. I'm thinking the hose inside is crimped, because there was no 90° installed on the Ryobi 18v. Just a manufacturer defect, but easy to fix

Still under warranty?
I have the issue and why I'm here. It just stopped building pressure.
Wow hey another issue reported! I’m shocked at how many people have this issue
Here I am again after fixing it AGAIN! Going back to HD.
Terrible…
LOL
@@tobylou8 yikes!!!!
When spraying, you should start are furthest end and walk backwards while spraying, so not to walk into the grass you just sprayed.
Put butter or ghee around the lid mouth and inside the lid and it will screw unscrew very easily!!
I don’t want to waste the ghee on that and not have it for my aloo parathas! 😉
anyone ever done a hose replacement
I haven’t seen it done
So the pump issue its just a nirmal issue my boss though i broke it and he got piss to this he still calls me to cuz me out lol
It’s so annoying!!!!
No one ever wants a product to not work so they have to take it back to the store. Duh! Shit happens because life isn't perfect. The important thing is that a company line of products work a very high percentage of the time, and WHEN shit happens, they respond in a meaningful and fair way.
So you don’t like the tank design, the lid, the loss of pressure while spraying - but otherwise great. 😂 thanks for the follow up video.
There’s a lot more to think about when buying…batteries, straps, tips, leaking fittings, hose, comfort,….
