Your videos are great. Question. Citric acid. 1 pound per 1000 square feet. How much of the product do I add to sprayer per gallon of water? Label doesn’t say.
I’m glad I watched this, I’ve never even considered timing it out. Fortunately my lawn is basically split into a 1000 and 2000 sqft section, so I just do the front and back separate.
Hi, and good afternoon. On several of your videos I think I saw you using a spray nozzle that had an angled attachment. If I'm correct would you share where I can get them. Thanks
Heya Archie. You can get them here: TeeJet AIXR11004VP: amzn.to/3fIexOD TeeJet XR11004VS: amzn.to/3iAG06O Here's a video that talks about them. ua-cam.com/video/xv3KatJ4Il4/v-deo.html
This is why I worry about putting down some of the specialty weed killers like Tenacity (24D) or the others. How much wiggle room do I have between taking out clover, wild carrot, and crabgrass versus wiping out my yard because I got it on too heavy (even if my mixture is correct) ? I am just getting my blue grass going from last fall, have a ton of clover and wild carrot. I want to wipe that out now so I have a cleaner yard to overseed come late August as I do have plenty of bare spots. The same goes for adding liquid iron that requires 'x ' amount for 1000 sq foot. Can I get that on too thick or is there foregiveness on over doing it ?
If you follow the process shown in this video and label rates, you should be able to apply liquid products with confidence wildpony. You don’t have to be absolutely perfect, but you also can’t apply at double the rate without consequences.
Once your calibration/cadence are set and ready to blanket spray, do you still mark off 1000 sq. ft. sections in your lawn or do you just walk for the 91 seconds until you run out and then repeat? Also, are you filling out 1 gal per application or do you fill the entire 4 gallons in the sprayer and then walk for (0.91 sec X 4) to cover 4,000 sq. ft. ? Thanks for doing these videos - you and some others have really helped out so much.
Hi Ron, LOVE your presentations and appreciate your great work. QUESTION: Why not simply spray to a gallon and time that? Why all the formula? What am I missing? (I'm curious) Thanks! 2 minutes of afterthought later.....Because we're not pacing for a gallon. We're pacing for 1000 sf. (right?)....But shouldn't 1g = 1000sf when doing applications? Am I overthinking it?? [I'm a rookie. Please explain]
Heya Mr. M. You could do spray a gallon and time it. The issue is stopping at exactly 1 gallon when the sprayer is running flat out. Often times you'll put more than 1 gallon of water in or come up a bit short. simply spraying for 15 seconds and doing the math allows you to get it dead nuts perfect. Make sense?
@@RonHenry Yes Ron, thanks for replying. I went out Sunday and applied your method anyway, even after my initial response. My Petra HD4000, using a Flowzone fan nozzle that sprays at 9-10" wide timed at 87 seconds. Problem was my pace (too fast), so I have to get that down. Gonna take a lot of practice, which unfortunately looks to come at the price of a lot of backache.....I've got +23K sf. to cover, so I don't know how feasible monthly (or even twice monthly) apps are gonna work at my age and going forward. I'm considering using the 1/2 gallon per 1000 method to cover more area with less tank refills. Or, I will look into a 25g pull-behind sprayer attached to my garden tractor. Any suggestions on a good pull-behind that won't require too much maintainence? On another note: have you experienced, or heard of, issues using Prodiamine 65 WDG in a backpack sprayer? Salesman at Site One warned against using it because it clogs the sprayer - "even after vigorous mixing?" I asked. He said it requires continuous agitation to function thru a sprayer and residue will settle before I could empty the (4G) tank. Doesn't make sense to me given the agitation that comes from walking with the tank on my back. Your thoughts/experience/advice?
good video, I really like the editing. however, i think people put way to much into these things. Unless you have a crazy spray nozzle, its prob pretty uniform and consistent. Fill the pack up, make sure you have a well charged battery and take your time to walk the yard uniform and even. don't run, or linger around, just walk at normal pace back and forth and keep the nozzle around your knee height to maintain that max coverage. may your yard be green and your weeds be few. have a great day.
I agree with you, most spraying I've done has been professional and it's a square patch here, a narrow strip there, then there was a litre still in the sprayer before I moved to the next property etc etc - It just wouldn't be practical to try to monitor every aspect. As long as I'm putting enough down, without spraying money onto the ground then I'm happy :) Taking nothing away from the video! I understand that this is the 'proper' way to do it (and how I was taught when I had to pass a backpack spraying course for work).
@@RonHenry I hope it was taken ok bud :) I've enjoyed lots of videos on your channel and have a lot of respect for your work. (Bit of a guilty hangup that text doesn't always come across as intended!)
Can also do the 18.5 ft by 18.5 ft method to figure out how much gallons per acre your sprayer puts out and adjust the herbicide amount based on your nozzle
Ron how do you effectively clean out chemicals from YM BP sprayer? Keep adding water until you spray out chemicals? I ask since you can damage your pump when tank go empty. Last ? What’s your size and measuring cup you use ? I looked it up on Amazon and the oz not clear per increment of how much to fill. I like a handle with funnel to poor. Prefer 32 or 64 oz container Thanks.
Great video! What psi are you running for applying post emergent vs pre emergent herbicide? Higher psi like 100+ for that flow rate seems really high for either application type, atleast with a fan nozzle, as the droplet size is really misty and blows extremely easily. Currently using the Milwaukee m18 switchtank, for reference. Thoughts?
I run the sprayer at the lower pressure level. The one I have only has 2 positions. I use the low. Your Milwaukee can work great as long as you calibrate it.
Hi Jason. You'd just alter the dilution rate. So if the product you're applying can be diluted at .5 gallon per 1000 square feet, then you could effectively double the coverage and the amount of product added to the sprayer. I'd be concerned about being able to cover 1000 square feet with only half a gallon of water/product mix.
Great content...simple and easy to understand. Can you do a video on what to do when you have more square footage than gallons? I've got about 12,000 sq feet, so loading the sprayer up 3 times (4 gallons) is a lot of work. Can you "triple" the mixture and just spray the whole section...just know you have to walk 3X as fast?
Hi Kyle. I have 12k square feet and I do 3 fill ups. The problem with making the concentration 3x stronger is you're highly unlikely to be able to walk fast enough to get 4 gallons over 12k square feet. Even if you could, the chances of you going a bit heavy in one spot and burning the lawn goes up quite a bit vs. simply doing 3 fill ups. I wouldn't attempt to spray 12k square feet with 4 gallons of product mix.
It took my lesco electric sprayer 8min and 15 seconds to fill up 1 gallon 😅😅😅. Is that too much or too slow? I have a little over 1100 sqft front yard.
Great info. What backpack sprayer do you like or recommend? I'm looking at getting a battery powered sprayer price range up to $500. I have a pump backpack sprayer but arthritis is giving me a fit spraying 35000 square feet now for 2 years.
Heya Scott. I'd go Flowzone Typhoon 2. They're tough to find in stock. You can check here: ron-henry.com/typhoon2 or on Amazon: amzn.to/39sUrVE Another good options is the Chapin 24V: amzn.to/2T22ekw The Typhoon really allows you to cover a lot of ground quickly though. Hope this helps. Thanks for watching.
Brother, I am going to keep commenting here how well done these are. Thank you. I appreciate you putting this knowledge out there. I will be making a point to continue through your video playlists. After a full reno with GCI Turf seed, I am need these babies to shine. Well done. Thank you. Keep up the good work. Background in turf management or just a hobby?
Glad you like them Stephen. I've worked really hard over the recent few years to improve them. Please feel free to share them with anyone that can benefit. It started out as a hobby and has turned into much more. My background is in technology field; information security specifically.
My 2gal pump sprayer only puts out 6-8oz with the fan tip that is on it. Can I still work with that? I have back issues and don't think I could carry a back pump. Is there another pump I can get that has a better fan tip that will put out more? The stream tip puts out 10oz but I don't think that will cover properly.
You should use the fan tip Donna. It can work well as long as you ensure you’re covering 2000 square feet with the 2 gallon product mix. Pretty much any sprayer can work as long as you’re applying the product at correct rates. To help with calibrating your sprayer, watch this video: ua-cam.com/video/hg9wKPsi2pY/v-deo.html
Thank you for the info Ron. I sprayed for clover in Mid May but still have some. Is it okay now for a second application? I live in TN and will be reseeding in Sept/Oct.
I don't like trying to figure out how fast to walk, so I bought a tow behind sprayer. Just to lazy, plus 31 gallon tow behind wasn't much more than the battery powered backpack sprayer and I don't have to hurt my back picking up the sprayer and putting it on my back/
Great video, I watch another video of a guy doing a video on flow zone. I can't remember his name but he mentioned lawn Ninja's a lot also he has a real long red beard. Lol. His backpack sprayer Flow zone is able to put out a gallon of water 🌊💦 in a minute. Just wanted to know is your different from the one he has. I know they have the 5 setting type flow zone now 👍 Thanks
Not sure which Flowzone he had Eric. The idea behind showing how I arrived at those numbers is so you can calibrate your spreader. There can be variance between units so always a good idea to verify the flow rates yourself.
I just purchased the flowzone cyclone v3. Is there a ideal flow speed/flow setting I should keep it at during the calibration and when spraying lets say liquid iron on a lawn? I see the control setting has 1-5.
Actually most sprayer equipment out puts TWO gallons per minute and that's the calibration flow chart info you read on pesticide labels. If you read further on you'll find mix rates for "spot spray" applications, that's the mix rate you use in backpack sprayers along with the instructions of: "wet leaf blade" that tells you, your eyes are the best tool to use for knowing/seeing the sheen of the product. Secondly, material type you are using you may want to alter your droplet size and use a larger output nozzle to prevent spray drift and particulate "floating" thirdly and most important, the square footage rate is only important if your putting down NPK that's the primary purpose for calibration to prevent nitrogen burning of your lawn. But you wouldn't use a backpack sprayer for that since the melted urea would be too abrasive for the pump to handle. You'd use a 200 gal poly tank with like a hydro d50, Honda motor and spray applicator gun with shower type nozzle.
I guess all my sprayers are broken then. Because none of them flow 2 gallons of water per minute with the spray tips I use for lawn products.. 🤷♂️ Appreciate you watching.
@@RonHenry that's my point. The backpack pumps won't handle 2 gpm to match the flow rate calibration of the chemical mix rate on the label. That's why we use the "spot spray" application instructions on the label instead
@@patriotmjb With all due respect, I don't think you know what you're talking about. I (and countless others) blanket spray at a 1 gallon per 1000 square feet dilution rate and have done so for years with excellent results. Most lawn care products specify a dilution rate of 1 gallon of water sprayed over 1000 square feet. Off the top of my head, I can only think of a fungicide and a 1 or 2 herbicides that call for 2 gallons of water as a carrier; and that's really only required if you're not planning to water them in after application. Fertilizers, 95% of herbicides, insecticides, growth regulator, and biostimulants all recommend dilution rates starting at 1 gallon over 1000 square feet. It works great. Now if you prefer to spray at 2 gallons per 1000, fine but it would be incorrect to say it's wrong to spray 1 gallon over 1000 square feet. It's literally what I (and countless others) do every 2 weeks when I blanket spray fertilizer, biostimulants and Primo Maxx.. Appreciate you watching the content.
That's easy to be critical but what you don't realize is I'm trying to be helpful. I own one of the largest fertilizer spray companies in the state of Indiana since 2012. You're welcome for the free help. With hundreds of thousands of acres covered and millions produced in revenue I think we know about mix rates
@@patriotmjb 🤷♂ Congratulations I guess? All I'm saying is it's incorrect to say that 2 gallons per 1000 is *required* when spraying liquid products. You can get great results with a lower dilution rates. Appreciate you watching.

How much of the product do I add to sprayer per gallon of water?
Label doesn’t say.
Hi Andrew. If you're applying 1 lb of 1000 square feet, you'd mix 1 lb with a gallon of water.
I’m glad I watched this, I’ve never even considered timing it out. Fortunately my lawn is basically split into a 1000 and 2000 sqft section, so I just do the front and back separate.
Glad it was helpful Jason. Thanks for watching.
Great video thank you.
Glad it helped James. Thanks for watching.
Hi, and good afternoon. On several of your videos I think I saw you using a spray nozzle that had an angled attachment. If I'm correct would you share where I can get them. Thanks
Heya Archie. You can get them here:

TeeJet XR11004VS: amzn.to/3iAG06O
Here's a video that talks about them. ua-cam.com/video/xv3KatJ4Il4/v-deo.html
This is really helpful, thanks!
Glad it was helpful critterdude311. Thanks for watching!
Excellent tutorial, thanks !
Glad it helped
Once your calibration/cadence are set and ready to blanket spray, do you still mark off 1000 sq. ft. sections in your lawn or do you just walk for the 91 seconds until you run out and then repeat? Also, are you filling out 1 gal per application or do you fill the entire 4 gallons in the sprayer and then walk for (0.91 sec X 4) to cover 4,000 sq. ft. ? Thanks for doing these videos - you and some others have really helped out so much.
Once the sprayer is calibrated, I just walk until I run out of product and then resume from there once I refill the sprayer.
Great tips. Thanks
Glad it was helpful!
Great tip. What tip size btw…0.5gpm?

Thanks. Same parameters on floodjet type?
Appreciate you watching Michael! Thanks for the feedback.
I agree with you, most spraying I've done has been professional and it's a square patch here, a narrow strip there, then there was a litre still in the sprayer before I moved to the next property etc etc - It just wouldn't be practical to try to monitor every aspect. As long as I'm putting enough down, without spraying money onto the ground then I'm happy :)
Taking nothing away from the video! I understand that this is the 'proper' way to do it (and how I was taught when I had to pass a backpack spraying course for work).
@@williammorris7895 Thanks for the feedback William.
I run it until it's pretty much empty and then run water through it to clean out the pump and lines
@@RonHenry ok so keep adding water after initially using as much chemicals as possible. then spray it out until it’s clear water. Thanks
Hey Ron in the beginning of the video what tip are you using???
Can you do a follow up video on calibrating backpack sprayer to spray more sq footage with the same 4 gal sprayer?
Good info
Thanks Brian
@@RonHenry Thanks for the info!
Anytime Kyle!
Hey, how do you deal with different nozzles? My fan tip and flood jet tip have different rates.
Use these tips.
Foliar Tip: amzn.to/3DUCTk3
TeeJet FloodJet Tip: amzn.to/377gMJE
I'll do it today .
Good deal.

@@RonHenry thank you Ron. For some reason I cannot seem to get the calculations. I will keep watching until it clicks 😊
Thank you for the info Ron. I sprayed for clover in Mid May but still have some. Is it okay now for a second application? I live in TN and will be reseeding in Sept/Oct.
Very welcome Fredrick. Appreciate you watching sir. If the herbicide you’re using doesn’t have temperature restrictions, then yes.
Check the label.

I don't like trying to figure out how fast to walk, so I bought a tow behind sprayer. Just to lazy, plus 31 gallon tow behind wasn't much more than the battery powered backpack sprayer and I don't have to hurt my back picking up the sprayer and putting it on my back/
The FlowZone pressure can be adjusted from 8psi to 115psi…where did you set your dial for this test?
The range of 8-115 psi is for the 2.5 version. I have the 2.0 version. It only has 2 settings. 70 psi or 115 psi.
@@RonHenry Ahh, got it. So, I assume you used the 70psi setting.
@@Methodical2 Nope. The numbers in the video are for the 115 psi setting
I use a metronome to measure my steps per minute it is a great tool for steps per 1000 sq feet.
That's definitely one method Roderick. First time hearing that one!
I just purchased the flowzone cyclone v3. Is there a ideal flow speed/flow setting I should keep it at during the calibration and when spraying lets say liquid iron on a lawn? I see the control setting has 1-5.
I would start with a lower setting.
Thanks for the 1000 sqft calculation formula 20*50
Anytime. Happy to help!
Is the Flow zone 4 gal backpack sprayer still available ?
It is John G. It's just pretty much out of stock all the time. Do My Own sometimes has it. You have to just keep checking: ron-henry.com/typhoon2

How did you get your pressure wand hooked up the hose line of the sprayer ?
It screws on and the wand has quick release fittings on it. You pull down on the fitting to release.

Any time! Thanks for watching
Why not fill the container up to the 1 gallon mark and time how long that takes?
Takes longer and less precise
