Backpack Sprayers - You won't get the best result without doing this
Вставка

- In this video I share an important tip for getting the most out of your backpack sprayer. It's something that most people overlook before using a sprayer to apply products to their lawn. In just a few minutes, you'll learn an easy to follow process that will save time and prevent issues with under and over application of lawn care products.
The tip I'm talking about is backpack sprayer calibration. I'll show you the process I use for back pack sprayer calibration helps me get a great result. Although Flowzone and Chapin backpack sprayers are shown, the techniques apply to all brands of battery powered backpack sprayers.
The first part of getting a great result when using a backpack sprayer is figuring out how long it takes your particular sprayer to output 1 gallon of water. Most products you apply to your lawn assume that you’ll be diluting them with 1 gallon of water before applying over 1000 square feet. Calibrating back pack sprayer is an important part of being able to do this.
So by figuring out how long it takes your sprayer to output 1 gallon of water, you’ll know how much time you’ll have to walk 1000 square feet.

Very informative in a short time, just what most of us here on UA-cam are looking for. Well done sir.
Appreciate it Larry! Thanks for watching
Takes me 130 seconds to spray 1 gallon of water out of my Ryobi 4 gal 18v sprayer. I walk REALLY SLOW… or normal speed and do a second pass. But mostly really slow lol. Great video
Good stuff
My 2gal pump sprayer only puts out 6-8oz with the fan tip that is on it. Can I still work with that? I have back issues and don't think I could carry a back pump. Is there another pump I can get that has a better fan tip that will put out more? The stream tip puts out 10oz but I don't think that will cover properly.
You should use the fan tip Donna. It can work well as long as you ensure you’re covering 2000 square feet with the 2 gallon product mix. Pretty much any sprayer can work as long as you’re applying the product at correct rates.

@@RonHenry thank you Ron. For some reason I cannot seem to get the calculations. I will keep watching until it clicks 😊
How did you get your pressure wand hooked up the hose line of the sprayer ?
It screws on and the wand has quick release fittings on it. You pull down on the fitting to release.
@@RonHenry could you find me a link . My sprayer wand is a female and having trouble piecing it together .
Find a link for what exactly. Do you have a Flowzone?
@@RonHenry no I gave a Petra 4000 I’m trying to convert the wand to a power washer handle . But having trouble
ok, I'm confused!
Watch it again. :-)
You can walk 1ksqft in 91s. Doubt it bro. Better to dilute to 4gallons and walk 1k in 6min. Same amount of product foes out and more time. Or decrease your pressure.
Dunno what to tell you. Been doing it this way for years. 1 gallon per 1000 square feet is what most products call for. 4 gallons per 1k would produce too much runoff. Foliar uptake products like Primo Maxx and most liquid fertilizer wouldn’t work properly. Appreciate you watching. 🙏😎
@RonHenry hey if you can walk/run 91 seconds in 1ksqft i think you have a olympic career ahead of you. Yes some products care about the concentration but most soil apps that need watering in dont...for these specifically you only care about the coverage so dilution doesnt matter.
I have a my4sons which has a variable pressure knob. At 120psi its 2.5m per 1k which is waay to fast for me. So i either dilute for soil apps or turn down knob for foliar/herbicide.
@apostlej2015 90% of the products I apply are designed for foliar uptake. Feel free to do what works best for you. 🙏 A man with experience is not at the mercy of a man with an opinion.
Great video! I also use a music metronome app to help maintain a consistent walk pace during calibration and spraying.
Good idea Redd Dogg. A couple other viewers have said they do something similar. Appreciate you watching.

this lawn care thing is getting overly and unnecessarily complicated, there is absolutely no need for all this math n precision, fill the tank and walk at a normal pace while spraying, if you get on empty fill it up n continue...
Your free to do it however you like certified30. You do get a better result by taking the time to calibrate your equipment though. Appreciate you watching.
I keep coming back to this video to calibrate my backpack sprayer each season, very helpful. Thank you!

Just an FYI. The link doesn't work.
@@Methodical2 thanks sir. I fixed the link. Appreciate the heads up.

Takes longer and less precise
Top quality content my friend. Your videos are so enjoyable to watch. I really appreciate how you explain everything in an easy way. Keep it up brother. Watching your channel from london Ontario Canada
Thanks so much for watching paradoxd. I really appreciate it.
Ron how do you effectively clean out chemicals from YM BP sprayer? Keep adding water until you spray out chemicals? I ask since you can damage your pump when tank go empty. Last ? What’s your size and measuring cup you use ? I looked it up on Amazon and the oz not clear per increment of how much to fill. I like a handle with funnel to poor. Prefer 32 or 64 oz container Thanks.
I run it until it's pretty much empty and then run water through it to clean out the pump and lines
@@RonHenry ok so keep adding water after initially using as much chemicals as possible. then spray it out until it’s clear water. Thanks
Knowing your equipment calibration will save you time and money. Two thumbs up 👍🏼 👍🏼 Ron.
Most definitely Brandon. Appreciate you watching sir.
Great stuff. Will be ordering a couple of those measuring pitchers.
Was surprised the 115 psi setting didn't quite put out one gallon, per minute. Haven't calibrated my new Typhoon 2.5, yet. Suppose that nozzle selection has much to do with this.
Also, it was a real shock to find out how difficult it is to mount 4 gallons of liquid onto my 67-year old back. Could have used a hoist.
It also depends on the nozzle trappn. My particular unit does not flow 1 gallon minute. 4 gallons is pretty heavy. I tend to put it on a table and use a bench to mount it so I'm not hoisting that much weight from the floor. Appreciate you watching!
OR skip the math and just fill the pitcher to a gal
Difficult to do precisely where you stop right at 1 gallon. The math isn't hard. Thanks for watching. 😎
neither is 20-21 ounces x 6...you could be off by 6 ounces in the end or stop close to a gallon and be off by an ounce. Yes the math is easy but its math
@@devin7224*shrug* not sure what to tell you then. If the math around calibrating a sprayer is too complicated, heaven help you when you need to calculate application rates. I think we'll have to agree to disagree. Appreciate you watching. 🙏😎

The green tip the sprayer comes with. You should calibrate based on the spray tip you're using. For foliar applications, this is the one I'd recommend: Foliar Tip: amzn.to/3DUCTk3
What nozzle are you using in the beginning of the video?

good video, I really like the editing. however, i think people put way to much into these things. Unless you have a crazy spray nozzle, its prob pretty uniform and consistent. Fill the pack up, make sure you have a well charged battery and take your time to walk the yard uniform and even. don't run, or linger around, just walk at normal pace back and forth and keep the nozzle around your knee height to maintain that max coverage. may your yard be green and your weeds be few. have a great day.
Appreciate you watching Michael! Thanks for the feedback.
I agree with you, most spraying I've done has been professional and it's a square patch here, a narrow strip there, then there was a litre still in the sprayer before I moved to the next property etc etc - It just wouldn't be practical to try to monitor every aspect. As long as I'm putting enough down, without spraying money onto the ground then I'm happy :)
Taking nothing away from the video! I understand that this is the 'proper' way to do it (and how I was taught when I had to pass a backpack spraying course for work).

Can also do the 18.5 ft by 18.5 ft method to figure out how much gallons per acre your sprayer puts out and adjust the herbicide amount based on your nozzle
Could you just spray out a gallon of water and time it?
You could but it's often tough to know when you've reached 1 gallon when the sprayer is running flat out.
How much do I need to use for a 4000 sq ft doing a split application
I don't like trying to figure out how fast to walk, so I bought a tow behind sprayer. Just to lazy, plus 31 gallon tow behind wasn't much more than the battery powered backpack sprayer and I don't have to hurt my back picking up the sprayer and putting it on my back/
The FlowZone pressure can be adjusted from 8psi to 115psi…where did you set your dial for this test?
The range of 8-115 psi is for the 2.5 version. I have the 2.0 version. It only has 2 settings. 70 psi or 115 psi.
@@RonHenry Ahh, got it. So, I assume you used the 70psi setting.

I find it harder to calibrate this way; it's hard to change someone's natural walking speed. I calibrate the sprayer to my natural walking pace, and if I need to change the spray volume, I will adjust the spray tips to get to where I need to be. This was an excellent video.

Excellent. I guess the nozzle and flowzone setting can be used to speed up or slow down the time I have? Do you agree? Thanks willie
Yes, absolutely Willie. Different nozzles have varying flow rates. I’d pick a setting on the flowzone and do your calibration. If you change the nozzle or pressure, the calibration changes.
Duuu. After applying my brain before opening my mouth, I can see where adjusting my dilution rate with more or less water is best. I want 6.9 oz of product per 1000, so my walk speed likes 2.1 gallons + product for 205 seconds
@@williechaffin387 That works too Willie!
Hey Ron in the beginning of the video what tip are you using???
So powerful and well made video Ron!! Thank-you sir!!
Thanks Popo and Son. I appreciate you watching.
got 1.875 would that be 1 minute with 87 seconds ?
I'll do it today .
Good deal.
This is why I worry about putting down some of the specialty weed killers like Tenacity (24D) or the others. How much wiggle room do I have between taking out clover, wild carrot, and crabgrass versus wiping out my yard because I got it on too heavy (even if my mixture is correct) ?
I am just getting my blue grass going from last fall, have a ton of clover and wild carrot. I want to wipe that out now so I have a cleaner yard to overseed come late August as I do have plenty of bare spots.
The same goes for adding liquid iron that requires 'x ' amount for 1000 sq foot. Can I get that on too thick or is there foregiveness on over doing it ?
If you follow the process shown in this video and label rates, you should be able to apply liquid products with confidence wildpony. You don’t have to be absolutely perfect, but you also can’t apply at double the rate without consequences.
Your videos are great. Question. Citric acid. 1 pound per 1000 square feet.
How much of the product do I add to sprayer per gallon of water?
Label doesn’t say.
Hi Andrew. If you're applying 1 lb of 1000 square feet, you'd mix 1 lb with a gallon of water.
Just a fyi there are free apps available that measure your lawn for you now. Gps pulls up your house and you can click and drag for measurements across the lawn
Yep. Great time to be in lawn care with m the tech we have available. 😎
Once your calibration/cadence are set and ready to blanket spray, do you still mark off 1000 sq. ft. sections in your lawn or do you just walk for the 91 seconds until you run out and then repeat? Also, are you filling out 1 gal per application or do you fill the entire 4 gallons in the sprayer and then walk for (0.91 sec X 4) to cover 4,000 sq. ft. ? Thanks for doing these videos - you and some others have really helped out so much.
Once the sprayer is calibrated, I just walk until I run out of product and then resume from there once I refill the sprayer.
Great video! What psi are you running for applying post emergent vs pre emergent herbicide? Higher psi like 100+ for that flow rate seems really high for either application type, atleast with a fan nozzle, as the droplet size is really misty and blows extremely easily.
Currently using the Milwaukee m18 switchtank, for reference.
Thoughts?
I run the sprayer at the lower pressure level. The one I have only has 2 positions. I use the low. Your Milwaukee can work great as long as you calibrate it.
Okay Ron 👌 that will help me out alot... great info 👍

If I don't do this test.....Is it safe to say "roughly" 90 Seconds per 1,000 sq feet is reasonable? If not, is there a "general range?" ie, 80 to 100 seconds? (My Scotts Backpack sprayer is 4 gallons)
Nope. I would calibrate
Great video, I watch another video of a guy doing a video on flow zone. I can't remember his name but he mentioned lawn Ninja's a lot also he has a real long red beard. Lol. His backpack sprayer Flow zone is able to put out a gallon of water 🌊💦 in a minute. Just wanted to know is your different from the one he has. I know they have the 5 setting type flow zone now 👍 Thanks
Not sure which Flowzone he had Eric. The idea behind showing how I arrived at those numbers is so you can calibrate your spreader. There can be variance between units so always a good idea to verify the flow rates yourself.
Even though I'm a subscriber, I wish I had found this video two days ago. I can fully confirm this is so important and little did I know how wrong I would get it. My flow rate was way too strong (new Greenworks sprayer) and my spray nozzle was also wrong.
Happy you found it now Kent. Sprayer calibration is super important.
Great info. What backpack sprayer do you like or recommend? I'm looking at getting a battery powered sprayer price range up to $500. I have a pump backpack sprayer but arthritis is giving me a fit spraying 35000 square feet now for 2 years.

Great tips , def have to try the measuring now and once I get my battery sprayer upgrade , I have the Sprayers Plus 4 gallon battery sprayer and it never really held a charge properly , I got a new battery and still does not keep the charge they way other people who have it claim. Something about mine is defective. So I am just going to get a FlowZone or a Chapin soon. I know someone else mentioned on a recent vid of yours about you potentially doing a vid comparing your different battery sprayers and how you maintain and keep them in top working order. If that is still on the cards I also would be very interested in that sort of vid with me being in the market to buy a new sprayer soon.
It does make a difference Alex B. It may seem like an unnecessary step but it'll allow you to spray with more precision. Especially important when it comes to herbicide application. I'm still down to make the Flowzone vs. Chapin comparison. I've used the Flowzone for long enough now that I can point out the pros and cons.

Ron, I have a 4 gal Chapin hand pump model Backpack sprayer. I’ve installed a pressure gauge to ensure the tank is pressurized while spraying. I find it very challenging to maintain pressure and walking pace while covering the desired area. It’s kind of like the old saying of “walking and chewing gum and trying to whistle” at the same time. Is easier to be consistent with the battery model for sure Mr Scott

Hi Ron, LOVE your presentations and appreciate your great work. QUESTION: Why not simply spray to a gallon and time that? Why all the formula? What am I missing? (I'm curious) Thanks!
2 minutes of afterthought later.....Because we're not pacing for a gallon. We're pacing for 1000 sf. (right?)....But shouldn't 1g = 1000sf when doing applications?
Am I overthinking it??
[I'm a rookie. Please explain]
Heya Mr. M. You could do spray a gallon and time it. The issue is stopping at exactly 1 gallon when the sprayer is running flat out. Often times you'll put more than 1 gallon of water in or come up a bit short. simply spraying for 15 seconds and doing the math allows you to get it dead nuts perfect. Make sense?
@@RonHenry Yes Ron, thanks for replying. I went out Sunday and applied your method anyway, even after my initial response. My Petra HD4000, using a Flowzone fan nozzle that sprays at 9-10" wide timed at 87 seconds. Problem was my pace (too fast), so I have to get that down. Gonna take a lot of practice, which unfortunately looks to come at the price of a lot of backache.....I've got +23K sf. to cover, so I don't know how feasible monthly (or even twice monthly) apps are gonna work at my age and going forward.
I'm considering using the 1/2 gallon per 1000 method to cover more area with less tank refills. Or, I will look into a 25g pull-behind sprayer attached to my garden tractor. Any suggestions on a good pull-behind that won't require too much maintainence?
On another note: have you experienced, or heard of, issues using Prodiamine 65 WDG in a backpack sprayer? Salesman at Site One warned against using it because it clogs the sprayer - "even after vigorous mixing?" I asked. He said it requires continuous agitation to function thru a sprayer and residue will settle before I could empty the (4G) tank. Doesn't make sense to me given the agitation that comes from walking with the tank on my back. Your thoughts/experience/advice?
Very well made and informative video. Thank you.
Appreciate it Shane. Thanks for watching sir.
Great video. Thanks for this. Calibration of sprayer and walking is underrated.
I think that it is worth further mention that this technique needs to be applied to every tip and pressure, not one and done. This seems like the best way to apply a calibrated delivery, but there are several similar methods to allow uniform delivery of the required amount of product. This basic technique allies to manual pump sprayers as well as battery sprayers at various pressures, so long as the pressure is kept relatively constant over time, governed mainly by the tip nozzle.
I really like the idea of using a phone metronome app with Bluetooth ear buds to dial in a constant pace.
You're correct Larry. If you change the spray tip or change pressures then the calibration changes. It's one of the most important steps for getting a great result that most overlook. Thanks for chiming. Appreciate you watching.
As someone who recently took the leap to purchase a sprayer this will help me out with my calibration. Thanks!

Thank you for the info Ron. I sprayed for clover in Mid May but still have some. Is it okay now for a second application? I live in TN and will be reseeding in Sept/Oct.
Very welcome Fredrick. Appreciate you watching sir. If the herbicide you’re using doesn’t have temperature restrictions, then yes.
Check the label.
Way too complicated! Most backpack sprayers output around 0.4 to 0.5 gallons per minute, or 1/2 gallon, (64 ozs) per minute approximately. Take that measured container and spray into it for exactly 1 minute and you should have 64 oz of water at 0.5 gpm and 51.2 ozs at 0.4 gpm.
With a flow rate of 0.5, divide 128 by 64 and it will take 2 minutes to spray 1 gallon on 1000 sq.ft., which is the standard rate for herbicide application, but your product may differ so check before application.
If the flow rate is 0.4 gpm, divide 128 by 51.2 and it will take 2.5 minutes to spray 1 gallon on 1000 sq.ft.
Divide 128 by how ever many ozs you get in your container in 1 minute to get your total minutes/seconds to apply 1 gallon on 1000 sq ft of lawn and adjust your walking speed accordingly.
Sounds like you have it figured out!
@@RonHenry I should have added all tips flow differently so do a check for each one.
Assuming you keep the PSI constant?
Yes
I did the walking test on my 10’ wide driveway. I measured 100’ length and the tried the 00:01:31 test. I just had to walk forward since I was able to reach left and right with the wand and gun. Way too slow on the first attempt. Better on the second try. Almost no pause in the leg movement….. might update this comment later. I think 10’ wide is a good method and comfortable reach. Also, was able to see the pavement “wet out”.
Great info for me the newbie! Thanks!
Glad it was helpful!
Hey Ron! After a HOC do you think it’s safe to apply PGR right after?
If you mow today, I would apply PGR the following day.
@@RonHenry gotcha! Will do
Thank you Ron . Excellent teacher . ❤

What kind of tip do you use for your sprayer?
The green tip that it came with
Has anyone checked to see if the flowzone is compatible with makita batteries
I'm not sure on that Matt. I know the Flowzone and Yard Mastery sprayer batteries are interchangeable.
Great video and great information
Glad you enjoyed it!
Great explanation. Thank you
Glad it was helpful Papa Mows Low! Appreciate you watching
Great content...simple and easy to understand. Can you do a video on what to do when you have more square footage than gallons? I've got about 12,000 sq feet, so loading the sprayer up 3 times (4 gallons) is a lot of work. Can you "triple" the mixture and just spray the whole section...just know you have to walk 3X as fast?
Hi Kyle. I have 12k square feet and I do 3 fill ups. The problem with making the concentration 3x stronger is you're highly unlikely to be able to walk fast enough to get 4 gallons over 12k square feet. Even if you could, the chances of you going a bit heavy in one spot and burning the lawn goes up quite a bit vs. simply doing 3 fill ups. I wouldn't attempt to spray 12k square feet with 4 gallons of product mix.
@@RonHenry Thanks for the info!
Anytime Kyle!
Ron you cover everything 😂
I try!
