The Pipistrel Virus truly is a true form of performance and efficiency. Being one of Pipistrel’s earliest model, this line of aircraft have now developed into a true modern day speed machine.
The Virus is built off of the Pipistrel Sinus. They have practically the same design/airframe and fuselage. Also share the same cabin space. The main difference comes in the size of the engine and the performance of the aircraft.
The Virus unlike its predecessor uses the standard 100 HP Rotax engine. This boosts the performance of the aircraft to cruise over 140 knots, 147 knots to be exact. All while burning only 5 gallons of fuel per hour. This aircraft can average up to 50 mpg. This makes it one of the most efficient single engine aircraft ever built. And because the performance is beyond 120 kts, this puts the aircraft in the experimental category.
Pipistrel Virus Specs
Engine - Rotax 100 HP
Range - 680 NM
Cruise Speed - 121 knots
Fuel burn - 2.5 GPH

Real world numbers are more like 120-130 kts on a typical day on 5 usg.
The wing tips usually curve down on high wing aircraft and up on low wing. Aerodynamically its not a big difference, the idea is to reduce wing tip vortices and thus drag.
The ailerons and flaps are combined into... flaperons.
On the top of the wing are the air brakes/ spoilers. You could not see them, they were retracted.
Baggage is 25 kg around 55 lbs.
And yes, I fly Virus and Alpha Trainer.
Oops- wish I had looked at prior posts more carefully. You covered it more eloquently than I did!
I would love this plane geez. It would be great to finish getting my license flying it. Great video Mike keep up the good work and thank you.
Pipistrel is Italian for bat, and the reason for this name is that when it was established in 1989 (although its already informally established a few years earlier) , there are legal restrictions imposed by then-Yugoslavian government. Due to these restrictions, the company's first aircraft, essentially powered hang gliders, flew in the hours between dusk and dark. This, together with the triangular shape of the hang gliders style wing gave those initial planes the nickname "bats" among enthusiasts and locals, which was adopted by the company, naming themselves after the Italian word for bat. Last April, the company was acquired by Textron Aviation, as it will be the core brand of its eAviation division.
Great walk-around, many thanks!
Your videos are great, very informative and you are very knowledgeable. Keep up the great work!
That Virus is nothing to sneeze at.
Haha!
Great video MojoGrip!👍👍😁
That’s a really nice little cruiser.
Someday when I grow up, I'm going to get one of these. Tomorrow if I can find one used at a decent price! Thanks for the video!
That airplane is sick.
I just learned of the private pilot glider rating with no medical. You can get the full rating and this allows you to fly the sinus to 17999 feet as long as you don't get the light sport add on. That is worth it to me just to have the ability to fly above 10000 ft as a light sport pilot. I am heading down to Florida in September 2020 to get my rating, even though I do have the light sport certification. 10 hours and 20 flights. Pass the FAA private pilot glider written exam, checkride( oral amd practical) with examiner and your done.
More like the Mazda MX-5 of the skies. Good performance and economical.
Pipistrel makes some beautiful 'planes but they really do need help with naming. Reminds me of when GM tried to sell the Nova in Spanish-speaking countries.
I’ll be googling that immediately 😆
Edit: After this video
Ford Pinto had a name change too in Latin America (it means penis in spanish and portuguese).
Dylan Baxter I heard the same thing about Nova in school, but I learned recently that the Nova story is an urban legend - the Nova sold quite well in Spanish speaking countries. The word means the same in Spanish as in English - all in the pronunciation. Kind of like “notable furniture” in English, we wouldn’t think this means “no table furniture” because of how it’s said.
@@ashsmitty2244 No va - "doesn't go" lol
If we're doing names that didn't go well in Spanish.. Don't forget the Mitsubishi Pajero.. lol.
The "edge" on the top of the wings are adjustable spoilers, actuated during the landing pattern to maintain glide-slope.
Fantastic Mike.. I Like..
Flapperon. 👍 when you said Prius. I thought it was a hybrid 😩🤣
sameee
the Panthera is my dream aircraft please do an INNNN DEPTHHHHHH review of one while you're there.
same
its not there and not available for reviews yet
I had a sinus virus once
Crit Fish
very funny, man.
Best PIP comment ever! Aeronautical comedy is born.
Hahaha
lmao.....ohhhh...my goodness!!!
Crit Fish very good
The ailerons are flaperons and act as passively set flaps in a way aswell as that cut out in the top is the air brakes which has two-three stages like a glider, after all it is based off of a motor glider
“If I had to ask the price; then, I can’t afford it” 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭👍🏼😂❤️❤️😂😂
Wow nice .. best outback planes imo .. bush wheels version that is
Mike, Nice to see you covering this plane. I think it is an amazing aircraft with incredible performance and high build quality. It’s a shame that our FAA has stuck it in the Experimental “penalty box”. Maybe one day we’ll catch up to the Europeans. We used to be the world leaders but bureaucracy has killed that. Keep up the good work!!
Not bureaucracy. It's odd outdated traditions and fear from all the participants of GA (pilot-owners, aircraft manufacturers, engine manufacturers, regulators) to try new stuff.
Just look at Lycoming & Comtinental engines - they are old as shit! The design goes back to 1930s-1940s.
Rotax is way more advanced, economic and reliable. But unfortunately they don't build 6-cylinder powerful engines. Nor 4-cylinder powerful engines.
I thing somebody in USA "insistently asked" Rotax (or the BRP) NOT to built such engines.
Americans understand this and now and then try to install modern car engines on their planes, thus going experimental only.
However, modern, say, Ford V6 3.5 Biturbo from F-150 Raptor is a very yammy spice on an airplane! Powerful, electronically controlled, lightweight, liquid cooled, economical...
Americans try to save money by retaining old familiar technologies.
Europeans have less money and substantially higher prices on fuel, so they try to save money by going into new design decisions.
For instance Dimond DA-42 and DA-62. Both have Austro engines, which in fact are modernized Mercedes-Benz 2.0 liter in line four turbo diesel engines.
One hole cylinder block, liquid cooling, electronic control, always turbo, of course fuel injected and!.. They use the jet fuel which is cheaper than the avgas.
@@aleksandrnestrato It's not outdated traditions or bureaucracy, it's the shitty nature of families of a couple idiots who died in aircrafts to start suing the manufacturer. A new Cessna 170 when they came out in the 1950's adjusted for inflation in 2021 only costs about $87,000. In the 70's and 80's, some idiots started dying and their families filed lawsuits that crippled the aviation manufacturers like Cessna who did not have large reserves due to private aviation at the time being a low margin industry. Those families also petitioned the FAA to heavily regulate private aviation to the point where most of the cost of a private aviation plane is now just testing of parts for FAA certification, and added buffer margin to protect companies from going under due to litigation. Cost of materials and assembly of a plane does not cost much at all. Honestly, just buy a reputable experimental plane kit, like those from Van's and register it as a amateur homemade plane by assembling it yourself so you can get around all the BS regulations. If you can't do it yourself, just find a experienced auto motive welder and a good auto mechanic to assemble it for you, not that hard to have a good reliable new plane with modern avionics nowadays for the same price as in the 1950's when adjusted for inflation. Might be a good idea to do it before the FAA closes this loophole for good in the future.
When I saw the title I thought maybe Pipistrel had used their electric airplane technology to create a hybrid by using a petrol engine with a battery pack, but no, the Toyota Prius reference was just referring to the fuel economy...
It sure gets better gas mileage than a Prius that's going 150mph lol
now that makes sense..one presenter kept calling it pepper strole and now i see pipestrel .so anyways keep going
Mike, love that powered glider your reviewing, but what I'm interested in is that yellow giro-copter job behind you, that we're getting glimpse of, Oh Baby! Thanks, Tim
the yellow one is a ranger AR by silverlight aviation. mike has done videos on these before
I had a Mitsubishi Pajero for years before a Spanish guy told me what it translates to for them xD
Waiting to fly this Pipistrel Virus.
What a name.
Contagious Flying.
I want this! And a P51D. My birthday's coming (hint, hint!)!!!
Whats the lastest on the Pipistrel Panthera, can you review one? Thanks in advance..
10:36, if you buy it you can most certainly train it if the CFI is willing and the aircraft itself meets the basic requirements of an aircraft for that rating. LSA only needed if it's the instructor's aircraft
Yeah, and most people get training before buying an aircraft. I've got my PPL but still ways off from buying an airplane. Sure as hell ain't gonna get a Cessna or any of the other dinosaurs.
Flown a DA-40, 3 times. Night and day compared to the C-172 or 182
A pilot at my local flying club owns this airplane. A fast and beautiful bird! It’s not cheap though
May i ask the cost/price per hour ?
I don‘t know the cost per hour. The price of the plane is > 100.000€
I mean, name a 2-seater that is cheaper? Brand new, no 50 y/o C-152, plz
Pipistrelle bats are one of the more common cave bats in the US as well. They must be common in Slovenia as well.
Looks sweet. Beautiful airframe but the seats look like they wouldn't be comfortable for any length of time.
In fact, they are very comfortable. (I fly a Virus every week)
I did the math. At 147 knots or 169 mph with a 5 gallon per hour fuel burn the mpg equals 33.81 mpg. At 121 knots or 139 mph a 2.5 gph burn as the specs listed equals out to a staggering 55.66 mpg. But I think like the car commercials always say, your mileage will vary. I'd love to make my Seattle to Bend hop on that little fuel at that speed.
It gets 120-125kt at 5gph. But, still very impressive
At least it's not the coronavirus
I wonder if there would be a improvement in efficiency, weight, maintenance costs, noise and reliability if this plane was converted into a series hybrid.
are these available for purchase in us?
is this more efficient than your sling tsi, seems like it?
I wanted to fully see this video but that harsh grinding noise was too much to bear.
The curve down winglet gives u 10% better lift than a upwards winglet, most use a upwards one as it provides better stability especially commercial airlines that cruise a lot faster
Where did you read that??
@@ammerudgrenda didn't read it I'm a aircraft engineer with 20yrs experience and that fact is one of the things iv learnt over the years
Curious about what the fuel capacity/range on these are?
Carl Turner could have looked it up faster than writing that comment.
I didn't know Toyota made aircrafts
Obviously there are many limitations with batteries and even though training seems to be the immediate marketplace I think it will all boil down to how many recycles you can charge the batteries. More recycles mean lower cost and that is what will spell success or failure.
Why would they have the grinding going on when your showcasing their plane? Do they know you have a following? Nothing like angle grinder sounds when manufacturing a plane?!? lol
I kinda like it
I see a lot of Trikes there.
Hello Mike, do they have a lower wing version of this plane?
No, but he's been flying a Sling TSI which is the next best thing.
@@thisismagacountry1318 Yup. Also trained in a Sling-2 and loved them. Pipersport SportCruiser are also good. But, both cruise at only like 100 TAS. Virus would do 120 TAS. the 150 they boast is an exaggeration as much as the 120 TAS is for Sling-2.
Mike, I believe you can actually train in this plane for a glider private license.
Does this take MOGAS?
Pilot at Bar "Hey Baby I'm a pilot and have a plane .. you want for a ride in my virus"... it's 145kt (166mph) cruise at 5 gph.... That is 29kt/gal or 33 mpg. No way it is getting 40 to 50 miles per gallon. I don't believe thier advertised specs... anyone in USA certify?
121 Legacy was the first certified.
Mike question, I want to get my pilot's license experimental glider motorized glider one problem I don't have a driver's license can I still Learn to Fly?
Don't think that you need a license. I am a sport pilot and I am heading to florida to get my PPGR. No medical, flight to 17999, fly internationally and at night.
Cool aircraft, I like it and can just about afford the fuel for it, but not buy it!
MojoGrip:
Words virus and sinus in Slovenian language has the same meaning as in english more or less sinus are nasal cavities or function in trigonometry and virus is....a virus
I have no clue why pipistrel chose this names maybe virus as a small plane and sinus as something cool from trigonometry or just for fun to be something special easy to remember ?
I gotta get rich so that I can get one of there airplanes!
I mean... It's a catchy name..
Pipistral means bat and the type is virus??? Pipistral makes up their names because they can predict the future.
Anyone know if the Virus can be registered as a motor glider? I know the Sinus can.
Yes
MIKE... MIKE... MIKE! Come to your senses. Get one of these instead of building the Sling.
Right! Or a pipistrel virus. Wonder why he chose the sling??? They prolly gave him a fattt discount to promote it on his channel.
Thought this was the flight design video
@@Iseejas I'll bet you are right about the discount.
@@Iseejas Apples and oranges comparison. The Sling TSI he is building is a 4 place cruiser and stable IFR platform. The Virus is a highly efficient 2 seater which can almost serve as a motor glider.
@@Tharkunify yeah been researching lately and see the advantages a sling tsi has to offer compared to the flight design and pipistrel. Guess I was being biased with my own future plane mission goals.
So it's my understanding that a person can fly this plane at the higher speeds with a glider rating, no medical no ppl no light sport rating. Is this correct? Can someone confirm this for me, I was pretty sure I wanted to go lsa but this seems like the way to go
I think if you modify the LSA version to add key features like the variable pitch prop, it becomes an experimental in the USA. BUT it can be registered as an experimental powered glider in which case you can still fly it without a 3rd class medical.
@@Tharkunify A person can get the private pilot glider rating with the powered glider sign off and the light sport rules do no apply concerning 10000 ft limit. Can fly it to 17999
Looks like a carbon fiber propeller and a liquid-cooled engine
did you mention fuel capacity???
Standard is 100 liters or 26 US gallons.
@@MarkRose1337 Thank you
In hindsight that turned out to be an unfortunate choice of name !
Flaperons?
Flaps + alerons in one
What is that LSA airplane or sailplane called, that has extendable wing sizes? (ie. the wingspan can be changed or extra lift and distance) Beautiful Airplane, would like to see it compared to other airplanes of a similar design. Thanks!
Flex
Sinus is very nice. I've few hours with it.
Virus SW seems to be very good to travel a lot.
A good plane you can park outside for a while if you don't find a hangar place.
I prefer old instruments than glass cockpit.
This isn't the Toyota Prius of the sky, although it can achieve 33.8 MPG if converting knots to MPG. The Sinus Flex would be the more appropriate Prius comparison, due to its multi wing configuration ability (Motor glider & cross country machine). The end of the wing has a winglet, allowing for a slightly longer lift surface, and the flaperons (both flaps & aerilons) along the wings trailing edge and the integrated air brake was the break in the upper wing surface which was demonstrated when you flew with Rand Vollmer. A few minutes of prep would've paid off I think. Just saying- no meanness intended!
Those virus wheels look way too wimpy for me!
They don’t cruise at 147 knots. I own one, have owned two of them and have known many with this aircraft. The most I have ever seen come out of a virus sw is 135knots true airspeed, not indicated. Max indicated is more like 115-120knots at 75% throttle. I have no idea how pipistrel came up with this stat as no one gets it. The trike version gets even worse then the tailwheel so I’m guessing this one gets around 115knots indicated 125 true. Good review of the virus, you just followed what pipistrel states, but sadly it isn’t true. Also Pipistrel changed the cowl now so on new aircraft ordered today you have even less forward speed due to higher drag from the cowl. They increase size and openings for better 912iS engine cooling. But it is an incredible plane despite the speed lies
Can it be flown with just a glider rating?
"Bat Virus" is a fine plane. Their goal is a pandemic. LOL.
Well you’ve completely lost me on this one. The Toyota Prius is a Hybrid car, that is, gas engine and electric. To my knowledge we don’t yet have a workable hybrid aircraft. So what the hell are you talking about??
I think he is comparing the fuel economy. 50 MPG in the Virus, around the same for a Prius. So hybrid-like economy in an aircraft.
You can purchase pure electric version but he was talking more about efficiency of this plane
Considering what an uninspiring and awful drive a Prius is, it's a bad analogy. You're not driving like this in a Prius: ua-cam.com/video/vPep1MHJX3s/v-deo.html
I know more about nuclear fission than this dude knows about Aeroplanes.
I honestly think the FAA should expand the part 103. Really, it shouldn't cost 10,000 + to get into these types of planes. Really. 5galons of fuel limit. Come on. No body said no training but that could be done at the manufacturer or dealer. The problem is that aviation is closed to most of the middle class because of money and time, the very people who would be better at flying because they have mechanical knowledge. The rich just buy their way in. The ultralight class is way to restricted. So much safety could be incorporated to these planes but then you would exceed the stupidly low weight limit. I know pilot are not going to like what I just said but it is true. The FAA demand way to much. Now a beechcraft g36, yeah, maybe you need to get a license. As far as commercial, that is a different story.
This plane makes the Cessna 152 a joke
This thing is a whole lot better than a Toyota. Really cool plane...the antithesis of mediocrity.
The Virus is a great plane! Why do you call it a Prius? It's offensive.
This looks like a plan-copter
The name only gets worse. Pipistrel is a breed of bat. 😂😂😂
Mike, is it called virus or virrus. It’s an easy question and important. You can’t rename planes because you talk that way
Scott must live in "Barthelona"? who cares how you pronounce it. Pronounce it "Virus", scott just hates that pronunciation cause it reminds him of his STDs
paige c I live in the south of England. I just don’t understand how a presenter can not know how to pronounce the name of the plane he is reviewing. If I can’t trust him to get the name right why should I believe anything else he says. PS childish reference to STDs .
i get where you're coming from, i was joking anyways. cheers.
"I see a cutting edge there and not sure what that is" - MMmmm, could it be to do with that air brake lever in the cockpit? C'mon dude, do your job right! The spoiler on this aircraft was worthy of a lot more focus and commentary(A bit more than none at least!) Was getting worried for a minute you were gonna tell us the model decal was green. If you flew in the Sinus how could you not know about the spoiler and if you don't know then why don't you do some research before you film and ask some one. Also I am not sure why the wing tips are turned down yet think it is because a top wing has less dihedral but because you did not ask I still don't know either. Not impressed today...
Virus 🦠
Много болтаешь больше показывай
Emotionally I detest the Toyota Prius... I am a Physicist and put up with 'Sheldons' with their damn Prius-i (Plural), including my brother-in-law. Next vid, compare the Virus to a Kestrel or a BMW, anything but a Puke-Prius. That said, your videos have convinced me to consider buying a Pipistrel.
Come ooon man.. Its an empennage... em-pen-nage.. NOT aumpannage. You ordered a kit... know your product
It is a French word and that is, more or less, how it is pronounced.
@@garthly yeah was having a bad day.. He called things out wrong many times in the past don't know why it bugs me so much.. But like I said was having a bad day so I couldn't keep my mouth shut this time
Will you get covid if you fly this plane? I doubt it as covid is a scam.
I am a helicopter pilot. I know any aircraft above 200 knots considers high performance, but switching from rotor blade to fix wing, 170 vs 100mph is not that impressive.
Epic name fail...
