    My Star Trek Journey.
    I discovered Gene Roddenberry’s Star Trek The Original Series in 1972 and fell in love with it even though I was only 8 years old. In 1973, Star Trek The Animated Series premiered on NBC Saturday Morning Cartoons, and kept me entertained until it finished its run in 1974.
    Like many other Star Trek fans, I waited and waited as the powers that be kept saying we would get Star Trek Planet of The Titans, then Star Trek Phase 2, until finally premiering Star Trek The Motion Picture in 1979.
    As the Harve Bennett movies of the 1980’s began, I was at the theatre on opening night for Nicholas Meyer’s Star Trek II : The Wrath of Khan, Leonard Nimoy’s Star Trek III : The Search for Spock & Star Trek IV : The Voyage Home, William Shatner’s Star Trek V : The Final Frontier, and Star Trek VI : The Undiscovered Country.
    Before the decade ended, we got Star Trek : The Next Generation. Which, among other things, introduced us to the three letter Star Trek designations with the introduction of TOS for The Original Series, TAS for The Animated Series, and TNG for The Next Generation. We also were introduced to Rick Berman, who went on to give us Star Trek : Deep Space Nine ( DS9 ), Star Trek : Voyager ( VOY ), and Star Trek : Enterprise ( ENT ).
    Berman also finished out the second run of Star Trek movies beginning with Star Trek Generation, Jonathan Frake’s Star Trek First Contact, Star Trek Insurrection, and Star Trek Nemesis.
    Shortly afterward, the star of the new millennium, JJ Abrams rebooted the movies with Star Trek using a new cast for the actors playing the TOS characters. Taken on its own, this movie; along with Star Trek Into Darkness and Star Trek Beyond were responsible for a completely new Alex Kurtzman Star Trek resurgence. Although many older fans didn’t like Star Trek Discovery ( DIS ), Star Trek Picard ( PIC ), or Star Trek Strange New World’s ( SNW )
    Oddly enough, brand new Star Trek animated shows have enjoyed a far greater success amongst the fan base with Star Trek Lower Decks ( SLD), and Star Trek Prodigy ( PRO ).

    When these figures first came out, I asked my mother can I get one.She said no, and was kind of disappointed, until later that Christmas that not only got me Kirk and crew, but also the Klingon,Balok and the Enterprise bridge set! To this day, I always remember it.😊❤

    As a kid in the 70's Santa gave me the Enterprise play set and Captain Kirk, Spock and Scottie.
    Recently I have been collecting the figures again. 🖖🖖

    In 1974, my Mom found all the Star Trek Mego Figure & Aliens in an obscure Dept. Store called Towers. Back then, the entire set was hard to find in Toronto.

    I still have my originals. The bridge playset is long gone. I did buy the entire set back in 2000 ish when they were rereleased along with the bridge set and all the new figures they did

    I was four in 1974 when I first saw Star Trek, the live action series. Loved it. Watched every episode. Saw the animated series after that, and it was OK. So as a kid, I preferred the live action series. Had Mego Kirk in the 70s. Now I’ve collected the majority of the TOS characters from the new Mego.

    Remember also that there were two type 1 releases. The very first release had the 5 figures with pink lips. The second type 1 release were without it. I had the original 5 as a kid in Australia and they all had pink lips. Kirk and Spock for Christmas 1974. Scotty a few days later, and McCoy and Klingon two weeks after that. At 5 dollars each they were very expensive. Even as a six year old I knew that because the Mego Superheroes were only a two dollar note plus a 50 cent coin.
    Over about the last 5 years I have managed to reacquire all original type 1 figures still carded. Not exactly in mint condition but close to it. Cost me an arm and a leg. I got Kirk, Spock and McCoy at the same time from the same seller. 3 years of waiting and watching for a Scotty. I resigned myself to the fact that I'd probably never find an original Klingon but then he appeared. But when I bought him I was pretty drunk. It was one of those 'screw the expense' moments.
    The trouble was, although the Klingon was on a 5-face card, It was a type 2 figure. Apart from not having metal rivets in the wrists, the Mego logo is absent. Two things I should have picked up on. But I'm just happy to have him. Bought from a seller in the UK, I just figured it must have been licensed under another company. But a type 2 figure on a 5-face card seems strange to me...

      I'm jealous! So happy you still have them. They are a key part of your childhood and as such, their value goes so much more than just dollars.

    My dad was a Trek fan in the 70’s, I got these for Xmas for a couple years. I think he wanted them more than I did, I barely knew what Trek was. But, I still have them. :-)

    I always thought it was so lazy of Mego to just make a red Federation Phaser, and communicator for the Klingon Figure. Now granted, we didn't see any Klingon Communicators in the series, but we did see the disruptor pistols.

    Another reason to leave your Wave 1 figure on the card is that the Type 1 Mego body was kind of terrible. Difficult to pose, and prone to joint breakage. The Type 2 was a dramatic improvement both in appearance and playability.

    • @jimgpayne
      @jimgpayne Рік тому +2

      Hi Thor K, welcome to our community! I agree, keeping Wave 1 figures on the card is a good idea, especially considering the limitations of the Type 1 Mego body. It was challenging to pose and susceptible to joint breakage. However, the Type 2 body showed significant improvements in both aesthetics and playability, making it a better choice for display and interaction.

    Who would have thought that an expansion for the bridge to "dematerialize" the figures would have been as much fun then that silly assed transporter...

    The Klingon doll is based on the animation series.

    • @TREK-WORLD
      @TREK-WORLD  7 місяців тому +1

      Actually, it appears that they used the Animated series as a reference for quite a few things in their action figure line. There was never any solid confirmation on that; but the evidence is pretty clear to see.

    My ears hurt everytime you referred to them as "dolls".

    • @jimgpayne
      @jimgpayne Рік тому +1

      lol.Yeah, it's a hard habit to break that's for sure. Ironically, the very next video to come next Friday actually has a large section within it explaining how and why the term "Action Figure" was coined. The action figure term is now used with pretty much any item that will be sold to boys, whereas the doll word applies to items sold for girls. A lot of people just make the assumption that if the item in question is male, you would call it an action figure. But that is not actually true. Which is why we still have "Barbie Dolls" and "Ken Dolls". Within the actual manufacturing world, they are still referred to as dolls because the term action figure has 4 syllables while dolls has only 1. But in marketing hype, the PR will always use action figure.

    • @robertkees6048
      @robertkees6048 8 місяців тому

      That's why I wouldn't get the "Uhura" doll. I don't play with dolls. I got the Klingon instead and made Scotty do double duty on the phones.
