    My Star Trek Journey.
    I discovered Gene Roddenberry’s Star Trek The Original Series in 1972 and fell in love with it even though I was only 8 years old. In 1973, Star Trek The Animated Series premiered on NBC Saturday Morning Cartoons, and kept me entertained until it finished its run in 1974.
    Like many other Star Trek fans, I waited and waited as the powers that be kept saying we would get Star Trek Planet of The Titans, then Star Trek Phase 2, until finally premiering Star Trek The Motion Picture in 1979.
    As the Harve Bennett movies of the 1980’s began, I was at the theatre on opening night for Nicholas Meyer’s Star Trek II : The Wrath of Khan, Leonard Nimoy’s Star Trek III : The Search for Spock & Star Trek IV : The Voyage Home, William Shatner’s Star Trek V : The Final Frontier, and Star Trek VI : The Undiscovered Country.
    Before the decade ended, we got Star Trek : The Next Generation. Which, among other things, introduced us to the three letter Star Trek designations with the introduction of TOS for The Original Series, TAS for The Animated Series, and TNG for The Next Generation. We also were introduced to Rick Berman, who went on to give us Star Trek : Deep Space Nine ( DS9 ), Star Trek : Voyager ( VOY ), and Star Trek : Enterprise ( ENT ).
    Berman also finished out the second run of Star Trek movies beginning with Star Trek Generation, Jonathan Frake’s Star Trek First Contact, Star Trek Insurrection, and Star Trek Nemesis.
    Shortly afterward, the star of the new millennium, JJ Abrams rebooted the movies with Star Trek using a new cast for the actors playing the TOS characters. Taken on its own, this movie; along with Star Trek Into Darkness and Star Trek Beyond were responsible for a completely new Alex Kurtzman Star Trek resurgence. Although many older fans didn’t like Star Trek Discovery ( DIS ), Star Trek Picard ( PIC ), or Star Trek Strange New World’s ( SNW )
    Oddly enough, brand new Star Trek animated shows have enjoyed a far greater success amongst the fan base with Star Trek Lower Decks ( SLD), and Star Trek Prodigy ( PRO ).

    Having family in various print industries, and myself having the grandest career in the aerospace industry I can say; Blueprints, white lines from a background of blue ink are used mostly for buildings because they'll be used in bright sun, and white paper dazzles the users. Bluelines, or simply prints, blue lines on white paper are used for indoor made engineering.

    A resident of Huntington Beach at the time, I was one of the attendees of the exhibition where the 11-footer was displayed at Golden West College. In a preview of the role it would fill at the Smithsonian, the Enterprise was meant to be a fantasy counterpoint to a real space capsule and other NASA paraphernalia, but of course wound up being the star of the show. I used to have a black and white Polariod of the model as it appeared then, minus the deflector dish and nacelle caps, but like Jeffries’ four-inch balsa model it has sadly been lost to time.
    The model and I reunited at the Smithsonian gift shop in 2009. We had both seen better days - her nacelles were out of true, and there was that notorious paint job, but there was some satisfaction to be had that we were both, against all odds, still here at all. Now, after her total refurbishment (would that I could get the same!) I’m looking forward to our third reunion, hopefully sometime in the near future.

    At 14:00 to 18:00 This is what I talked about in your earlier video. People had asked the right question all the way back in the mid-1970s, but that question and the answer were lost to time and to people who, unfortunately, got caught up in their own self-importance and created a horrible doctrine rather than admit they were wrong. This kind of thinking lead to the awful 1991 "restoration" with the ugly green color with thick lines (which Datin blasted at the time as completely wrong) which lead to lots of inaccurate paint jobs and detailing on models that fans made in that time period and into the early 2000s.
    That fanzine article I told you about in the comment section of the other video did tell about the 11 foot model being originally delivered with the port side finished or nearly so, but was then destroyed to run the cables for the lights into the model since it hadn't originally been built in the first place with lights of any kind in mind. It even had an incredibly rare photo of the model from the port side, but like a lot of such things back then, they kept popping up at conventions by the boatload and then disappear as people grabbed them up. I'm convinced that those photos, like the one Doug Drexler sent you, are out there, but they'll probably only pop up again at an estate sale or something like that, assuming they and their negatives haven't been destroyed.
    I'm just glad that after all these many years and dealing with blind sheeple telling me I was wrong to finally be proven right. Richard Datin's own comment and that photo from Doug finally set the record straight.

      Hi Mike! Good to see you again. I've been trying to identify the fanzine that you remembered. Right now, I suspect it was TREK. Unfortunately, I can't find any early issues at all. But I did literally just buy all 18 paperback "best of trek" books. Maybe I will be able to find it in there.
      I 100% believe that it told the same story I discovered. Simply because it was way too new for people to have already started simply repeating other people. Unfortunately, if it was a fanzine, theres a good chance that it has been lost.
      I just find it frustrating when folks who should know better present themselves as an authority on the subject. NONE of us are authorities on this subject. The only true authorities are now log since passed. And if people don't wake up and start questioning things - then they will 100% be lost to time.

      In fairness to Ed Miarecki, he had the right idea, but went about it in the wrong way. The 11 footer did have a grey-green paint job, but not the way he decided to do it. And at the time, while there was no internet to go look stuff up on, he still has no excuse for not being able to get in contact with Matt Jefferies and more importantly, Richard Datin, both of whom were alive at the time. It wouldn't have been all that hard to get in touch with them given the contacts and resources Miarecki had at his disposal.
      And yes, Datin did (rightly) roast the Smithsonian and Miarecki for botching the job.

      @@TREK-WORLD Best of Trek had some absolutely amazing covers, but they were only peripherally anything Star Trek-like in subject. One cover had two Y-wing-esque ships attacking a big green greebled up ship. What that had to to with Star Trek, I've no clue.
      It's kind of the same with the James Blish TOS episode adaptation books. Some of the art on that is much more recognizable as looking properly Trek, but the departures are real interesting and make for interesting reimaginings of the look for TOS. Star Trek 10 was interestingly very prophetic by showing the Enterprise firing on a Klingon D7, blasting a chunk out of it with a green phaser beam, and each ship has very Star Wars-like detailing: hull paneling, greeblings, and the Enterprise has a wedge shaped piece on the engineering hull right where the Phase II and TMP refit Enterprise would have their photon torpedo bay at! I wonder if this cover was seen by Jefferies or Andrew Probert....
      These covers might make for a fun video subject. Just sayin'.

    Wow, those shots from the college at the end are amazing. Don't think I've ever seen such clear color shots of the original paint job before. And the interior lights are far warmer and yellower than I expected too.

    • @mikedicenso2778
      @mikedicenso2778 Рік тому +2

      If you had never seen the model in the 1970s or 80s, you'd see that the old incandescent bulbs used tended to be warmer and yellower for the windows and some of the running lights as well as the domes. We'll never know for sure exactly how the nacelle dome lights looked, but if you're old enough to remember the old incandescent Christmas tree light bulbs, you'll have an idea since that's what they used to help create the effect.
      The look would change over time as the model got covered in dust and grime or the plastics dulled out due to the heat of the lights, or the lights got closer to the end of their life.
      The studio tried to avoid filming the model, except when absolutely necessary because the combined heat of the studio 5 k lights and the models own internal lights risked overheating the model and damaging it.
      The 2016 restoration with LED bulbs is very nice, but still falls somewhat short of the proper look, but at least it reduced the risk of fire and heat damage in general. It's just a miracle that the model was so well built that it withstood decades at the Smithsonian with the older incandescent bulbs going full on nearly every day!

    The first British HMS Enterprise was captured May 1705 from the French navy. It's Construction times being what they were it's conceivable, though not documented, the keel could have been laid in 1701. That gives 3 to 4 years from keel to capture. That could be the source of the 1701 registry number.

I have always been fascinated by the more production side of it and I wanted to get into visual effects after becoming interested in how they filmed the miniature. I have always read everything I could about this. But when I saw the 1701A written here from 1965, that blew me away. WOW, all the way back then they thought of this. One question I have. Do you mean that after Space Seed the model was pushed to the side and never used again? No new shots for 2nd and 3rd season of the 11 foot model? Because in the picture at 32:17 it shows it with the Botany Bay.

    Fun fact:
    The Polar Lights kit, with its stated scale of 1:1000, is just over eleven inches long. The filming miniature is just over eleven feet long, giving the kit model a real-world scale of 1: 12. Set up a couple of six-inch action figures next to it to give you a sense of the size of the miniature.
    And the Polar Lights kit, with its stated scale of 1:350, is almost exactly the same size as the original thirty-three-inch maquette...no action figures required.

Though I was a preteen while watching the reruns at the start of the 1970's I often noticed how the Enterprise's appearance kept changing from one episode to the next. It was much later in life that I found out how they had shot a lot of stock footage that was resused. The same tactic used on ST:TNG. It's still on my bucket list to visit the Smithsonian for the sole purpose of seeing this amazing model (which is almost as old as I am and in much better condition! LOL).

Primarily because you can see a shadow on the nacelle from the stage lights as they turned the model. Whenever this happened, they had to take the shot a again. If they didn't catch it in time, then they would replace it with a similar shot they had previously taken.

    The long-range establishing shot, the standard-approach shot, the left to right shot, are all fabulous looking (or rather make the ship look fabulous) because our view is slightly underneath which makes the ship look bigger (like standing on a pier looking up at a giant cruise ship going by). But all the other shots, including the long-approach shot as the ship turns, are not good because now the ship is at a bad angle (seen from above) that reduces the size of the model (like flying high over a cruise ship in a helicopter, makes it looks small in perspective).

    • @TREK-WORLD
      @TREK-WORLD  Рік тому +1

      Hi there! Actually, the model builder didn't come up with the registry numbers. Richard Datin built the models and painted and detailed them. But the NCC-1701 was decided by Matt Jefferies and was noted in the Blueprints that Matt gave Richard. The house number rumor has been around for years. But no one has any proof other that a photo showing the wrong person standing a 1701.. If you search for the original story, you will see that people retell it with different persons; some say it was Datin, some say it was Roddenberry, some say it was Lynnwood Dunn, and some say it was Matt. However, the only person it could have been would be Matt. And he was very specific on where the NCC and 1701 numbers came from. Matt did address the NCC coincidence; but he was clear it was a coincidence. But it got worse when folks at Desilu started using the Curtis designation during the second season production.
      The number myths are amazingly varied. I could probably do a video on them alone. It may kind of be fun....
      For instance; there is a scene in Forbidden Planet where one of the crew call out the numbers 1701. And there's a whole boatload of folks who believe that's where it came from. But in the end; the man who actually chose them went on record that none of the above was even considered when he came up with the registry.

    Everyone talks about CGI and AI today, but Jefferies had nothing more than pencil, paper and paint and he managed to make something incredible. It's not the method, it's the idea that's important. No amount of CGI can make a bad design good. Look at the Enterprise model sitting on the street outside the model facility. The car (Ford?) looks incredibly out of date, the phone booth past the car is a fading memory today -- Enterprise still looks futuristic.

    Great video! Do you have any information about the parts of the Enterprise, like the "neck", that were supposedly painted light blue? I've read there is debate about this and in some photos I see it and in others I don't. It also seems to vary from pilot to production.

    • @TREK-WORLD
      @TREK-WORLD  6 місяців тому +1

      Thanks for the kind words! And yes, it was painted with a bluish paint. When they delivered the 11ft model for the first pilot, it was filmed against a black background. They made the decision to film against a bluescreen background beginning with the 2nd pilot. So they "toned down" the blue in the dorsal so that it wouldn't "bleed" into the background. After seeing the finished effects, then they "toned it down" again as there were still some issues with the tone that they had selected. And, by the time the model was used in production, the dorsal had no additional blue hues in it.

    But you skipped so much stuff. The most obvious is that they replaced the entire saucer with a slightly larger one with a less bulbous bridge. The second most obvious is they replaced the vents on the ends of the nacelles with globes. And finally the dish was resized to be smaller. These are all clear in your footage.

    • @willmfrank

      Kind of...It's hull color, the same as the rest of the nacelle, which is, in Richard Datin's own words, "a pale grey with a hint of green." But...it's a hemisphere, which doesn't catch the light the same way that the tapered cylinder does, so there's quite a bit of fall-off, making the pale grey fade out and the greenish tint appear darker.

    The model, as it appears in the Smithsonian, has what appears to be some sort of energy weapon (a phaser emitter?) on the bottom of the lower sensor dome. This isn't visible in the series, but the footage is too low resolution to tell. Is there evidence that this was actually part of the model when it was filmed?

    • @TREK-WORLD
      @TREK-WORLD  Рік тому +2

      Yup! The emitter has been a hot topic over the years. From the 70s to the early 90s they could find no photographic proof of the emitter. Which is why it had never been put onto the Enterprise when they did the previous restorations done in 1991 and earlier.
      However, since then, original B&W photos have surfaced. I'll include more info on this in the next Evolution video.

      Correct! I actually avoided the class designation when speaking over that particular slide. I figured that his notes would be confusing since his wording was a much simpler “cruiser design”. Actually, it get weirder than that (based on my research this morning).... Th early fan published copies of the Concordance referred to the Enterprise as "Constitution Class". But when Ballantine published the Concordance in 1976, it was referred to as the "Constellation Class".
      However, the first actual use of the "Constitution Class" by Star Trek was in the Next Generation Naked Now episode. However, much like the D7, the origins are lost to time. And Star Trek itself literally waited over a decade before using a name on screen..

      I've seen quite a few. I know that his "loan" to Roddenberry for the PH2/TMP designs was tricky. Landon insisted that he stay with the Little House team. But he was allowed to "consult" with the Star Trek team. That's why Landon kept tabs on Matt when he was with Roddenberry during that time.
