      They didn't learn their lesson from last year. Got the best talent in the league but their batting lineup clearly doesn't believe in analytics. Hitting Schwarber in the leadoff is asinine. A .200 hitter with no speed in the leadoff spot is comical yet the Phillies continue to roll out this lineup. They have so much talent they can get away with it in regular season but in the playoffs where games are nip and tuck it shows its ugly head. Losing to Arizona, a team with half the Phillies talent, was just terrible. Phillies lack of analytics department will cost them again. Analytically sound lineup would be :
      1) Turner
      2) Harper
      3) Realmuto
      4) Bohm
      5) Schwarber

      _The broken bat made this an extremely unique triple play_
      Surprisingly, that's not correct. There have been exactly _six_ 1-3-5 triple plays in the modern era of MLB, and all but one (a 1-3-5 by the Chicago Cubs against the Boston Beaneaters, in 1905) have involved a broken bat of one type or another.

  • @meyerdave4

    Serious question - what would happen here if the Phillies defense hadn't noticed that the runner on 3rd left early? Would that "run" count if they just accepted a double play and resumed pitching to the next batter?

    • @torchmark66
      @torchmark66 9 днів тому +4

      Yes. They have to throw to third to complete it. If not, the game goes on...

    • @mikecumbo7531
      @mikecumbo7531 9 днів тому +3

      If the pitcher took the ball after the double play and stepped off the pitching rubber and threw the ball to third base, an appeal play, then the baserunner who had been on third would have been out because he left his base early. (Didn’t tag up).
      As long as the Phillies didn’t pitch the ball, they should have been able to appeal to third.

    Fascinating. I has one question but did find an answer then. Rule 506b1 says since you have to reverse the bases in order to avoid being doubled up, if there had been a wild throw here and the runner had crossed home plate, he could have retouched home plate and gone back to third to avoid being doubled up? Which would be funny to see him heading to the dugout and then do that.

      I can’t give probability because I’m terrible with math but I’ll give all that needs to be considered (that I can currently think of): The exact way the batter hit it, right to the mound for the pitcher to catch without touching the ground, the runner on first running too far off first so the pitcher can get him out on first, and I think most importantly the runner on third not getting back to the base so that they can get the runner back on third. Though I don’t think you need any of this to consider the probability as it not having happened for almost a century is a pretty good metric to show how often, or in this case how rare this specific play is

    • @buffgarfield5250

    • @ATR1830
      @ATR1830 9 днів тому +1

      @@buffgarfield5250 That’s very true. It’s a weird thing where sometimes the more rare play in baseball is the easier play. An unassisted triple play is also a pretty rare play, but that doesn’t necessarily mean it’s hard. In fact unassisted triple plays are usually pretty routine and you were just in the right place at the right time to make it. This play is very similar in that case. Very routine, but due to the runner on third’s poor base running it turned from a routine if albeit not often seen double play into a once in a century triple play

      Runner at third didn't tag before the ball was caught by the pitcher. Similar to a sac fly when the runner is on base and tags after an outfielder catches it they can then run. The throw to third was then a force out because the runner was supposed to be on base and the ball was thrown back to the base before they could go back.

      Have you seen them? With runners at 2nd and 3rd, no one out, and the infield back, there was a ball hit up the middle on Saturday by Greene, the shortstop with momentum going towards first base, barely gets to the ball and then throws him out, and Verling is still standing on 3rd base after! Then the next batter dribbles one to 3rd , Verling scores, as the third basemen throws the batter out at first, and then Colt Keith is still standing on 2nd base after that! Unreal! They're not just bad, they play fundamental baseball like toddlers playing t-ball.
