  • Paul Skenes has only thrown 4 starts and is already showing off his superstar talent. With the use of his own new pitch the splinker and amazing tunneling he has been dominating at all levels of baseball. He also throws stupid fast with pitches reaching 103 MPH throughout his collegiate career. He has a ridiculously high ceiling as a starter and that's what we talk about today.

We did make a mistake here, Paul Skenes did not invent the splinker however he did discover it on his own by mistake. Jhoan Duran was the first to throw it until Skenes came up with a similar pitch. Both pitches have very similar qualities Duran's being slightly faster with a little less movement (closer to a sinker) and Skenes' being the opposite (closer to a splitter).

He modeled it after Duran. Every guy who follows pitching closely knew about the splinker almost a full year before skenes threw it

Duran is also the all-time leader in 4SFB velo and splitter velo since PITCHf/x began tracking in '07 and over multiple seasons too. Let's tame our expectations with Skenes and his power. We've seen Strasburg, Syndergaard, deGrom, Snell, Sale, Severino, Eovaldi, etc. all ebb and flow with regards to performance and velo. Can't forget the adrenaline factor with someone so green to the atmosphere.

The most exciting thing about paul skenes for me is that his mechanics are SO good compared to a lot of the injured fireballers we've seen in the last 5-ish years. It's Verlander-esque, and I know he had TJ, but it took him a helluva lotta pitches to get that injury.

Paul left the AF Academy prior to the start of his Jr year due to the obligation to serve in the Air Force post graduation and once he knew he had a great chance of being drafted he knew he had to leave. The Air Force will generally allow members to go play professional sports but, if need be can call you back and Paul, understandably didn’t want that to happen. He’s also said he would like to serve at some point in his life.

It's way too early to be talking about Ryan.Ryan was a freak of nature. ...Luis Tiant threw in the 100 mph club before he blew out his arm for Cleveland..before surgery to fix it was available. Then he learned how to pitch by tricking and out thinking hitters. Throwing 100 is one thing ...doing without major injury is another.

Pretty impressive. Hope Pirates win a championship with him. I love their stadium and their fans deserve a championship. They have a number of years to build a team around him. We've seen this story before. Throwing consistently 100+ mph isn't good for anyone's arm. He's not superman. I thought what they said about Strasburg was BS and he'd be fine. Break all the records he wants, but it's going to shorten his MLB career. Hope his arm doesn't wear out by 2030. He'll then become a free agent and get his payday. Probably go to the Yankees, Dodgers, or Phillies $$$.

    Dude is already a BEAST.
I had an insane arm growing up, but was never clocked. Only randomly played at 13 and 16. At 13 I was part of a no hitter. I was wild, so the one game I pitched, the opposing coach MADE his entire team just stand there and not swing. I did walk in one run...but a 13 year old with zero experience making 16 year olds not even try is impressive in hindsight. At 16 I was unhittable in my league, still too wild though. IF I'd been developed who knows, I don't, but believe I could have made it. Did play softball when I was 21-22. We always played at night, so I don't really understand this, but when I'd throw the ball would look like it was tazing or jerking through the air. Threw my shoulder out one night, now I choose to toss things underhanded... I had even more batting potential however, so I wouldn't have chosen pitching. Life can be an amazing experience for some, while a form of torment to others...crazy.

I have never seen a picture at this age with this many pictures. Do what he’s doing since Doc Gooden. But he didn’t have this many pictures. If this kid stays healthy, it might be the greatest career we’ve ever seen. But we’ll see.
