- Steve Dangle walks you through one of the most complicated trade trees in NHL history. It begins back in 2009 when the Toronto Maple Leafs acquired Phil Kessel from the Boston Bruins. Find out how that deal is still shaping the future of three teams today.

This is even crazier with the Kasperi Kapenen trade back to the Pens
Now the mccan bit too
I feel like I just watched a conspiracy theory video
Lmao!
So Steve helped the Bruins draft Dougie Hamilton?
Taking a call from a 19 year old at a bar is exactly how I'd imagine Pete Chiarelli making decisions.
@@Jobother I would too. Chiarelli is napalm and salt, He will burn your team to ash and as long as he is there nothing will grow. Ask Edmonton.
jonah hoff That would explain a lot about some of his decisions.
That’s what I’m hearing here lol
jonah hoff as an oilers fan I agree 100%
The leafs are so kind helping other teams make the Stanley Cup Final (sarcasm)
Bingo! You nailed it with that comment!
@@bareknuckles2u yea so kind that we got Matthews and Andersen back
worked out for both teams
Rooz - still no cup, but at least the leafs are finally contending to be contenders
A year later in 2021 and you might actually be onto something...
"We've put enough time into this trade tree, so let's put a bow on it."
Leafs & Penguins: Not so fast.
I was just about to comment this 😂
Galchenyuk is a Senator
@@truehockeyfan1179 Kapenen for a first
Leafs & Penguins again before the expansion draft: Not so fast.
"Thank you Phil Kessel?" Sounds like such a Seggy thing to say LOL
After Seguin scored his first goal (in Boston, and against Toronto), Bruins fans started chanting “Thank you, Kessel” lol.
As a Pens fan, it was well worth trading for him. We ended up with 2 cups out of the deal and a cult hero
And kaps is back! LOL
what we traded him for was just awful though
@@MichaelHallerandAssociates how did that go
You forgot to mention a crucial point. Trading away Kessel not only landed us Freddie but allowed the Leafs to tank hard enough to win the lottery and draft Matthews. Along with Marner and Nylander, the core pieces was gathered and now we have our team
Yes, now they have the team led by a guy with the personality of drywall, a pair of nostrils that disappears anytime he gets touched, and a goalie who psyches himself out in game 7 situations.
CaptainMazda not a leafs fan but freddy has always played good in playoffs including game 7s it’s his defence that lets him down
A team .... you mean a first round exit team , they will never win anything with 50% of the cap in 4 forwards, one of those need to go .. it’s not the Centers , it’s not Nylander where his contract is actually fair .. gotta be Marner .. home town boy who demanded 11 mil , buy bye
Canadian Pride they will win a cup
@@Hunter-fd3eg no they wont, my dads been waiting for 58 years
I'd say Kessel is the clear winner of that whole thing. Traded twice already, goes to Penguins gets two Stanley Cups!! Honestly out of all these teams, at the time, not sure he could have or would have gotten 2 Cups with either of the other teams. Think he found the right team eventually, even if it did take a few tries.
Man, this tree needs to add the Kapanen trade back to Pittsburgh.
sooooooooo steve drafted dougie hamilton for his rivalry team?
So now we have a another person that doesn't exist "intern Tom"
I think u need to fix this since Kapenan got traded
I love these trade trees. Keep up the good work!
'Nice guy, tries hard, loves the game' - Phil the thrill!!!
I think the next one you gotta do is the Matt Duchene catastro- I mean saga.
Due to covid-19, I can't share a hotdog with Phil Kessel.
you sound like my mom explaining my relation to a distant relative at a family function
Gonna need an update on this one, Steve -- with Kapanen going back to Pittsburgh and Toronto getting some picks back, this story isn't over yet ...
These trade trees are amazing! It's nice to look back on parts I remember but also the finer details that go under reported.
You should examine the Stevens-Shannahan-Pronger situation with the St Louis Blues. I heard that way down the line and many years later that one of the related draft picks turned out to be Jordan Binnington
Great video! I love digging through the spider webs of trades and seeing how teams evolve!
Please show past teams that had AMAZING ROOKIES! And how the teams changed... leafs are one prime example in the mid 80s... but check out the 1999-2000 flames team! Insane
This is a good example of SN destroying TSN right now. Thanks for the vid.
We all know where our loyalties lie
I love Steve`s videos here and he's the reason I'm coming back to sportsnet as often as I do but Bardown by TSN is pure hockey gold
The tree involving Glencross to WSH mentioned Hamilton's CAR trade.
I laughed out loud so hard when you told the Tyler Seguin story at the bar where he tapped you on the shoulder saying "thank you Phil Kessel?" After using the leafs pick to select Dougie 😂 that's an all timer, and that's a dang it
Just had to put the dagger in my heart at the end with Zucker huh
Also imagine getting tapped on the shoulder, ya know just casually, by Tyler Seguin 😂
Love these trade trees thanks Steve
As a Stars fan, I’ll thank Toronto for Seguin ending up here. Great job everyone 👍
I’d actually thank Nathan Horton’s wife for Seguin
And we thank you for jason spezza
Steve Dangle = LIVING LEGEND
So, not only did the Leafs help the Bruins win a cup with this trade, they then helped BOTH teams get to the Cup final in '16 (not mentioning that they also traded Reimer to the Sharks in a separate deal that same deadline). Also that Seguin story is fantastic.
lol I got a hot dog ad when I clicked on this video
Steve Dangle is best part of Sportsnet coverage for me, always enjoy him as he's a regular sports fan!
Sucks that he's a leaf fan
Just Random but i witnessed Lauzons first career goal against Vegas
These are sooooo good keep it up
Sam steel is gonna be really good he led the chl in points with Regina
Love the trade trees!!
Steve, awesome job man for you and your team!
thank you for this series Steve as it made me start looking back thru how some trades have evolved for my favorite team the Anaheim Ducks and there is a trade that parallels and overlaps with this trade tree that I think would be interesting to look at because there is reason to say that at least 5 teams have won this trade and branches of it are still evolving today for teams that got something from it. The trade I was looking at is the 2011 trade that sent Tomas Kaberle to the Boston Bruins
Zucker's first game with the Pens was against the Lightning... As a Bolt fan, living in MN, I got to see Zucker play and knew he was missing SOMETHING. My God, seeing him play next to Crosby was insane. Absolutely a whole new level with those two. They just gave Crosby a new, younger weapon, and the sky is the limit with those two.
We'll see how Kessel's run with Arizona/beyond goes. I don't see things going well down south for him, but hey, crazier things have happened.
On point my friend on bloody point!!!!!!!
@Sportsnet
I think one that would be interesting is the Craig Rivet one from MTL to SJ ! That was a monster of a trade for Montreal that ended up including Pacioretty, Subban, Gorges and more after that (and basically the only good move Gainey did as a GM.. remember Gomez?)
Anyway, thanks for these Steve and keep em coming !
I should also add that these videos are awesome and you should make a bunch more. I think their just as great to watch as dang its and hat picks. (Also my dad and uncle coached spaling in AAA in waterloo before he grew and my uncle was friends with the kitchener rangers scout and showed him spalings super tall parents and helped him get drafted:) )
Even with the cup win, it's hard as a Boston fan to look at this trade without thinking how badly they botched it. Eriksson was a disappointment, Smith wasn't ready and then they traded Smith and got an even bigger disappointment in Jimmy Hayes.
It's funny how Chiarelli traded both Hall and Seguin who were fighting to be first overall, lost both of those trades IMO
@@Roller11111 Not to mention, he traded Seguin because he didn't fit their team...imagine if they would of had him against the Blues. Perhaps the Leafs would of been handing out more Stanley Cups.
5:18 - I laughed so god damn hard...
It's kinda old but I would like if you did the trade tree that brought the Leafs their first 50 goal scorer, Rick Valve. Amazing that this trade was made by Leafs owner Harold Ballard when he served as GM.😀
Omg when you made the joke about the leafs tying Curtis Mchillenny to the crossbar I died🤣🤣🤣
This video really made me realize how key Jared McCann will be to the Kraken's first Stanley Cup.
6 years later
How the Marco scandella trade helped the habs get Chris cross
Keep them coming
That is Norwegian sensation Mathias Olimb thank you very much!
1:42 Jeremy Jacobs doesn’t feel like paying for much does he...😬
Probably one of the reasons why the bruins have so many under paid players. Pastrnak and Marchand have the best team contracts in the league. If the season continues we might see both hit 100 points for the same price is mcdavid.
Probably the reason they won’t pay there employee staff during a pandemic and lays everyone off and boosts his own salary
Owen Alderson bingo
Jeremy Jacobs is basically Eugene Melnyk BUT with amazing management/scouts and he isn't as involved as Melnyk in the trades
Time to update the tree with Kapanen going back to Pittsburgh
I had to laugh when Steve brought up the Ayres game in his Hamilton story because the team that the Leafs lost to in that game also happens to have......Dougie Hamilton
I guess we are going to have to update this tree with the new Kappy deal
5:16 Adding insult to injury is the fact that the 42-year-old zamboni driver was in net for the team that had Dougie Hamilton.
Although Dougie sadly didn't play, it is true
@@mrutherford1106 I know, I'm still upset by the injury even though he's recovered by now
I love the Say Anything movie reference!
Good example why trading futures usually doesn't work out. Look at the roster the leafs could have had. Develop prospects, sign free agents , win cup.
dude, youre amazing
These videos are the best
Seguin had issues in Boston that’s why he was traded
When it comes to the Dougie trade, 2 things worth noting; Dougie wanted out of Boston and wouldnt have signed there anyways so Boston scrambled to get as good of a trade out of him as possible. And 2, that senyshyn pick could (SHOULD) have been either Matthew Barzal, Kyle Connor, or Thomas Chabot as Senyshyn went 15, and the 3 players ive just mentioned went 16 17 and 18...
Really good
man this host is great, made a complex 17 minute video very interesting to watch
Since I'm from the future, I'll tell you that Kessel wasn't traded from the Coyotes. He did sign a contract for 2022 with the Golden Knights, and officially broke the games played streak in the process.
You should do the Wayne Gretzky deal to L.A
More trade trees! 👌🏼
they could have had Seguin.....
And Hamilton and rask and.... keep it going
Freddie wasn't back-up in Anaheim, he started as one in 13/14, but even in that year, he has most play off appearances out of three Anaheim goalies at the time - him, Hiller (who overshadowed Giguere few years before that, so not a weak competition) and very young Gibson. In 14/15 and 15/16 seasons, Freedie was number one goalie and Gibson was mostly his back up - even though they played similar amount of games in 15/16 regular season, Freddie was still first choice for the play-offs. And his record in that three years in Anaheim was pretty good. Too bad they didn't manage to finish Chicago in 2015 conference finals, they were 3:2 up in that series and then lost game six and home game seven.
A year later this tree has extended a bit more. Fun tree!
oh phil kessel 2 time Stanley cup champion and leafs legend ... not at the same time and the leafs have been paying him a million dollars every year for the penguins to use him to help them win cup and now hes living in Arizona. how does brian burke have any credibility after the disaster of the leafs and his short time with the flames. tyler seguin is a legend.
Justin Koster because he brought the twins to Vancouver every GM makes bad trades and every GM makes good trades. For every Kessel to Toronto there’s a Sedin twins to Vancouver.
I still can’t believe Pittsburgh traded kessel!
dude Steve Dangle Rocks i love the Videos he does
Forgot that Polak ever left the Leafs organization. He still haunts my dreams every night, playing on the first powerplay unit with Marincin and Hainsey
Ceci is in net in this recurring dream
This trade tree going to be still active for a long time to come. Especially if you keep including all of kessels parts.
This was fun to watch. Are there any other player trades worth covering in this format?
LOTS!
You're doing amazing Steve! Thanks for the content :)
Ovechkin 2005-6 106pts 2nd in the team 57pts 3rd 44pts
Ovechkin 2007-8 112pts 2nd in the team 69pts 3rd 56 pts
And now, Sam and Maxime are some of my favorite ducks and can't wait to see what they can do for the team
All this trade tree tells me is that Tyler seguin is an absolute legend 😂😂😂
I liked very much you do a great 👍 job. What about Dion Phaneuf trade. Could you do Trevor Linden which will most likely make me cry but that’s ok I could use a good cry 😢 right about now. Here some other ones that might be interesting Cam Neely, Pavel Bure , Gilmore.
As a bruins fan it hurts how many times we traded stars like seguin and Dougie Hamilton
Did anybody notice how he has 3 dots straight down his neck btw nice 👍 work on the vid!
Thanks a lot, intern Tom.
Comtois was great this year on a team with a stale offense
Update the tree now plz!
Kasperi Kapanen was selected 22nd overall. Not in the 3rd round.
This trade tree needs updating now that Kapanen is gone back to Pittsburg 😜
And galchenyuk is a Leaf
Me in 2021 watching this knowing Kapanen gets traded back to Pittsburgh just wishing this video would have been made this year.
What's funny is that Toronto ended up trading Kapanen back to Pittsburgh. I forget what they got in return or what else was sent to Pittsburgh, though.
It's truly amazing Leaf fans continue to think the Kessel acquisition was smart. Most everyone thought Burke lost his mind giving up 2 1st's and a 2nd. And he did. Burke failed miserably in his quick rebuild attempt. Another lost natural rebuild gone bad. Yes, Burke is a colleague, but he bares responsibility!
Aaaaaand youre a coiler fan!
Steve, as a Stars fan I hated that trade because the team gave up Loui Eriksson, but Tyler Seguin was pretty good as a Star.
I NEED MORE
Good stuff Good stuff
Jesus Christ Steve, I know we all have plenty of time to ourselves right now but damn, you went full Charlie Kelly on that flow chart minus the cigarette between your fingers 16:06
Steve, it's Friday! Go fire up NHL and play with the Dr. and Drew! 😁
I never thought I’d ever hear the name Ponikarovsky ever again.
some day there will be a long complicated alex galchenyuk trade tree and i, for one, am excited
Welp this is gonna need to be expanded with Kapanen and Kessel both getting traded
watching this at the end of november 2021 and sean durzi just scored his first career NHL goal against the leafs 😂😂 YOU CANT MAKE THIS STUFF UP
You should do NHL what if’s
