Alex Steen went to my school in Winnipeg...he was 3 years younger than me, so it's not like we hung out, but I did know who he was (because I followed the Jets, and at the time his dad was one of my favourite players). He didn't have an aura of fame around him though...thankfully, people treated him pretty normally, from what I could tell.
I remember how mad I was when they made that trade. I was watching Pierre McGuire say Steen would never be a goal scorer or anything other than a bottom 6 guy. And I thought, Pierre McGuire would never make it as an analyst on TSN.
I didn't even like the trade when it was made. "Trader Cliff's" last move as Leafs GM handed the Blues a core forward for a decade and gave the Leafs squat. What a joke.

I appreciate that you pointed out Steen's all around game, especially defensively. One of the best 2 way players I've ever seen. Not a superstar, but the kind of player every team wants.
