Fun fact: Matt Damon was cast because he was relatively unknown at the time the film started filming, but Good Will Hunting was released a few months earlier in 1997 and he was a big star by the time SPR released in theaters. Talk about perfect timing lol.

Matt Damon talks about this in a video here on UA-cam. (Where he recaps his biggest roles.)
I can't remember it all, word for word. But I hope it's easy enough to find and hear his words.
He was passed on initially. In the photo they had he was looking too thin/malnourished.
Robin Williams invited him to some event... thing... And introduced him to Spielberg.
This is (apparently) when Spielberg saw that he was perfect for the role.
I recall that he points out that this is the second big opportunity he got because of Robin Williams.

    • @Telruin

@Marcelo Naveira Rainmaker released after they had finished shooting the movie. (I think at least)
I don't know how long before that they did their casting. I believe Matt Damon comments on this in the interview. That he had a couple of titles releasing in between working on the movie.
(I also don't think the original comment were stating that he became a big star because of SPR. Just that he was a big name by the time it released. And I think it's true that Spielberg were looking for relatively unknown actors. In that case it would have been up to him if they were unknown enough.)

What I love about this scene is it really shows the amazing character and integrity Ryan has. Throughout the whole journey the team and us have wondered if this Ryan is worth the lives of Wade and Carpazo. When we finally do see Ryan we can tell he is a man of honor and is loved by his men. The team also sees this too and though they don't say it you can see on their faces they respect the man despite who they have lost.

You do remember that the other Ryan's brothers are all in GRADE school, so fucking shit he would react that way to his CIVILIAN brothers who were still children all suddenly dying when they are supposed to be far away from the obvious dangers of war. At least the main Ryan knew that his brothers had a high chance of dying being soldiers in combat zones. Already knowing about several sets of brothers where most if not all died serving, the Juneau that had the Sullivan brothers also had around 29 other sets of brothers, and remember only 10 out of a crew of 697 were pulled out of the water alive.

But after seeing that Ryan is just as brave a soldier who refuses to be relieved from a dangerous place in the battlefield makes him respect him... In a later scene we see him nodding towards Ryan before the tanks start to come at them, as if saying "I understand your stance...you have my respect" and later saves his life when he physically sits on top of Ryan for stopping him from moving/getting hit... Former Air Force here. Yeah, orders are orders but I actually side with Private Ryan. He gave a simple but persuasive reason when he told Capt. Miller to tell his mom he would stay “with the only brothers he has left”. THAT is devotion to duty and in time of war it means even more than the comfort of family. That is also a choice that any true red-blooded American mom would wear like a badge of honor for the rest of her life. This is a movie, and a phenomenal one at that, but staying until reinforcement arrives is the right answer.

Officers are in charge of operating the pumps which means we are on full watch duty once every 4 weeks. When it is our watch turn, we have a radio with us and can't leave the town for the week, can't even get passed 8 miles from the station. It restricts what you can do with your life during that week, and highly frustrated our wives when it started (limit possibility of going out). Yeah. And in many cases, Hollywood scriptwriters did work hard to extract extensive historical details and real-life accounts to come up with screenplays as realistic as possible.
That's how films like this one and others like Pearl Harbour, Letters from Iwo Jima, Thirteen Days etc were crafted.

This is an excellent lesson in leadership. The decision that Captain Miller is faced with is very difficult to answer. It proves that there is not often a clear cut black and white answer to such situations. Miller has his orders, and they are to get Ryan out of there. However, when Ryan refuses to leave, what does Miller do then? He can't just sack Ryan up and take him anyway. He also can't leave without him because he would fail in his mission if he did so. So he changes his mission, he and his unit stay to protect the bridge and, even though most of Miller's men die, they are succssful in protecting the bridge and Ryan obviously survives.
It is a great lesson that orders sometimes can't be carried out exactly as expected when they are given.

You have to admire James here. He's being ordered to go home because he lost his brothers in a relatively short amount of time and the Chief of Staff doesn't want his mother to get another folded American flag. But James not only has concern for the 2 who were killed trying to find him but for his unit as well. They all have mothers too. He's no better than them the Chief of Staff be damned. Even at the end when he is an old man at Capt. Miller's grave he can't contain his grief and asks his wife if he was a good man, a man deserving of the chance he got and the sacrifices made on his behalf. Just an overall powerful movie and I don't care what anyone says, Steven Spielberg is the greatest director Hollywood has ever known.

The basis of this story I find troubling, personally. Every mother in America didn't want their private Ryan, their son, to get killed in the war. It's kind of like the General saying that killing three of the four brothers is OK, as long as the fourth doesn't get killed. It makes no sense to me. But then, war makes no sense anyway. The only person who needed to get killed during the whole damned thing was Hitler, as the sniper so rightly observed.

      @shawnheidingsfelder8179 2 роки тому +48

No, the death of three brothers is not ok, and the movie didn't say that. There's a reason the military does their best to separate family when they serve at the same time. It's so a mother doesn't have to lose an entire family in one battle. The Chief of Staff decided that one family suffered more than enough, and they were going to do everything in their power to make sure they didn't suffer more loss. Yes, it's very improbable (not impossible) that three brothers would all die around the same time in three separate locations, and that three letters would have to be delivered at the same time informing the family of their deaths, but that's the only part that is Hollywood. The higher ups would have tried to make sure the last brother got sent home before he died too, and if they found out he and his squad was missing, they'd want to know what happened to them, too. They took some men from a unit that could spare them, not knowing how bad Pvt Ryan's situation really was. Plausible enough for a movie.
