What’s the movie Forrest Gump about?
Stupid is as stupid does, says Forrest Gump (played by Tom Hanks in an Oscar-winning performance) as he discusses his relative level of intelligence with a stranger while waiting for a bus. Despite his sub-normal IQ, Gump leads a truly charmed life, with a ringside seat for many of the most memorable events of the second half of the 20th century. Entirely without trying, Forrest teaches Elvis Presley to dance, becomes a football star, meets John F. Kennedy, serves with honor in Vietnam, meets Lyndon Johnson, speaks at an anti-war rally at the Washington Monument, hangs out with the Yippies, defeats the Chinese national team in table tennis, meets Richard Nixon, discovers the break-in at the Watergate, opens a profitable shrimping business, becomes an original investor in Apple Computers, and decides to run back and forth across the country for several years. Meanwhile, as the remarkable parade of his life goes by, Forrest never forgets Jenny (Robin Wright Penn), the girl he loved as a boy, who makes her own journey through the turbulence of the 1960s and 1970s that is far more troubled than the path Forrest happens upon. Featured alongside Tom Hanks are Sally Field as Forrest's mother, Gary Sinise as his commanding officer in Vietnam, Mykelti Williamson as his ill-fated Army buddy who is familiar with every recipe that involves shrimp, and the special effects artists whose digital magic place Forrest amidst a remarkable array of historical events and people.

I love the old lady's reaction. She thought she was getting a entertaining story, turned out it was true.
"shit. maybe I am sitting next to a millionaire"
Similar to watching a horror movie and seeing in the end titles "based in a true story".
Tragically, the actress that played the old lady passed away only a few months after this movie was released. Her name was Nora Dunfee.
Her face when she saw the magazine was both shock and awe lol
I thought her reaction was because how LT Dan looked like lol
Gary was born to play this role. The character of lieutenant Dan inspired him so much that he became actively involved with war veterans and started his own foundation. Forget an Oscar; this man deserves the presidential medal of freedom 🙌❤️
Not to mention he has a band called the Lt. Dan band and plays bass.
you'd have thought it would have inspired him to work for peace instead.
@@vladtepes97helping vets is peace, man. It's not like he's giving them weapons to fight again, he's helping them vets who are in need. Not every vets goes home to meet luxury, alot doesn't even have a home to go home to.
@@siphonophoreskinda sucks how the government uses up the lives of young men and then leaves them to look after each other when it has no more use for them...
@@siphonophores working for peace precludes the "need" for war. Of course, modern "war" is rarely actually war anyway.
Only just realised now that Lt Dan was not just thanking Forrest for saving his life in Vietnam but also by unknowingly saving him from alcoholism and depression. From this point on Lt Dan is at peace with his life.
Thanks, I missed that second part until you spelled it out. Saved his life twice ..
exactly, glad people noticed it.
In vietnam, he just prevented his death.
The crazy thing is this is actually a thing. In a bad enough storm boats along the shore/in the harbor are often destroyed. Boats that fight it out and brave the weather in open water survive.
Sometimes, just as often the storm is bad enough to sink it in open ocean. And not just the boat the people on it. Boats can be replaced, your life can't.
Makes sense, crashing against a wave hits alot less hard than crashing against the shore.
Multiply that by however many times a wave rocks your boat off the coast and it's alot less surprising.
You just have to dare God to kill you lmao i love this scene
Clearly you never watched Perfect Storm.
@@DomWeasel And I don't recommend him too. He should read the book, it didn't translate in the movie.
The ship is called Jenny, because it's always wet, smells like fish and has another man on it.
Whoopsie daisies.
I just died. That's hilarious
It's also riddled with diseases.
wow, very funny. you're a sexist. haha. how hilarious.

Seeing Lt. Dan yelling at God at the top of boat in the middle of a storm while the American flag is waving gotta be one of the most badass scenes ever filmed

More like the most american thing I've seen

@@Mr0901 Thank you good Sir!
And he oppose god himself...
I’m a 64 year old man but it always makes me tear up when Lt. Dan says “ Forrest, I never thanked you for saving my life “
Me too.
Did not thank him til the end
I'm 28. I find I tear up easier the older I get. And I'm not embarrassed of my emotions anymore.
@@christophersanders3252 cringe.. you should be.
I'm 29 btw.
3:28 This line, the music and the scene of Dan swimming at peace in an Ocean... made me cry. Still tears my eyes up. Damn
he finally make a peace with god. the most beautiful scene, made me so peace too. and my tear coming. i want to feel like that too. cause my life had a "Shit happen" mostly time. and i stil trying to made a peace for my self and god also world too
The scene symbolizes Dan Baptizing and cleansing himself of all his sins.
The sky, the clouds and the sun rays. It truly feels divine
Such a beautiful scene, and the message is truly inspiring.
The storm represents Lt. Dan confronting his demons and all the angry and misery that is in his life. Unlike in previous scenes, he is not trying to hide from his troubles with alcohol or women; he is facing them head on and telling them that they can either kill him or leave him, but, either way, he will not let them torment him anymore. This is further supported calm and success after the storm. He has triumphed and rid himself of his demons. Lt. Dan jumping into the water represents his baptism - his rebirth, the start of his new life.
Amen! Brilliant summation & analysis. Very much like a baptism.
You perfectly described it indeed!!!I love it!!!!!
Wow. Amen!
And that he doesn't need legs where he is at. He is not a cripple in the ocean.
Well now, that's about the best interpretation of that scene I've ever heard. Thank you for putting it into words.
2:45 I feel like not enough people appreciate the genius of this scene as a subversion of all expectations.
How so?
@@juanmanuelpenaloza9264 Up to that point, we listen to these stories--and like the gentleman that walked away, we just believe that he's telling these stories because he doesn't even really know any better. Then after the man walked away, the older woman sits next to him and says that she enjoys the stories. Then Forrest produces the magazine with him on the cover. The woman then realizes that these aren't just stories, anymore. These are things that actually happened to him.
@@or10nsharkfin But how is that subverting expectations? We know these things happened to him. Nothing was subverted
@@_Cato_ Idk I guess if the audience had been doubting Forrest the whole time as well/were expecting a plot twist
@@_Cato_ we as the audience aren't doubting him, but the people on the bench don't believe him. The guy even says he's heard some whoppers and laughs at the fact this simpler man is claiming to be the founder of a massive well-known corporation (the guy even says you're the Bubba-Gump Shrimp corporation and laughs walking away). Wouldn't you be shocked to find the guy you were sitting with on a bus stop bench was the founder of UA-cam or something?
Forrest is so humble he doesn't even think to prove it. He asks the lady if she wants to see Lt. Dan - just continuing his story. When he uses Fortune magazine to show her simply what Dan looks like, she's shocked because everything he said was true.
Shows how humble Forrest is. Even when someone is making fun of him, and he can easily prove it, he's too humble/simple to care. "Are you stupid or something?"
0:15 has anyone noticed that storm sounded like the T-Rex from Jurassic park lol
Get the heck out of here you're right!
Yep. Guess they like Jurassic Park so much.
last time I bumped into T-Rex he stole my sandwich...!
And then he invested in a fruit company. "Thats good!"
APPLE! 😂
One less thing!
One less thing!
One less thing
"Bubba-Gump Shrimp. It's a household name" the way he talks is just so funny!
Tom said he mimicked Michael Conner Humphreys who played the young Forrest.
That woman is the only person in Forrest's life who owed him nothing yet treated him with the decency he deserved his whole life.
The best scene of the movie is when lieutenant dan realizes how blessed he is to be alive.
I like to think him jumping in that water, the lord baptized him himself.
Dan: "Where the hell's this God of yours?"
God: "You called?"
Gary Sinise portraying Lt. Dan is the all time best supporting character ever.
Forest gump is one of the best motion pictures ever made
This movie is and forever will be one of the most beautiful films ever made. It really is something special that cannot be replicated
Remember what Forest says when he runs through sh*t it happens🤣
They don't make movies like this anymore.
I watched this movie with my Father when it came out in 1994. 1st time seeing Gary Sinise in a movie. Thought his legs really were amputated. After watching the Oscar's realized that it was a visual effect.(Won) Sadly my Dad isn't here anymore. I'll never forget watching this fantastic movie with my fantastic Dad.
Did you think the earlier scenes of him walking in vietnam were CGI?
@@dspsblyuth I assumed it was after watching the full movie
Lt. Dan: Where the hell is this God of yours??
(Wind blows for an upcoming storm)
"It's funny Lt. Dan said that cos right then, God showed up."
The attitude of Forrest Gump.. Seeing good in all.. And the result? He became a millionaire.. Forrest Gump wasn't just a movie but a life lesson..
2:24 Comes by the next week and the old lady tells him "You should have stuck around for 30 more seconds. Turns out he was a millionaire".
I was nine years old when my mom and dad took me to see this movie and it brought me to tears then and now I’ve aged and seen it several times this is still one of the greatest movies of my lifetime.
And think it lost best pitcher to pulp fiction, Although Tom Hanks dead win best actor rightfully deserved
The lady sitting next to Forrest on that bench looks a lot and reminds me of my Grandma Fleming. She was an incredible woman and it was an honor to know her. I really miss her.
RIP Grandma Fleming! You may not know me, but I know you once existed, thanks to Mr Purdie.
Lt. Dan: "where the hell's this God of yours?
God: you called?
One of the best movies ever made, I love the woman's reaction when he shows her the cover of Fortune. If only he had showed the man who just walked away too
You know, for someone who was only a sailor for a short while Forrest handled that hurricane really well.
I swear to God, when I saw this the first time I thought he swam off as an act of suicide. He finally let go of his anger and was ready to die with peace.
I'm really glad I was wrong.
Forest gump is the definition of living life to the fullest
Love that woman's reaction when she realises she is actually sat next to a guy with like $100m+ net worth.
Right she knew he wasn't lying 💯
i really think dan is only one who really would do everyting for gump,he is his true friend ,and he is never gona betray him
This has to be one of the greatest movies ever made, all American and priceless. People will be watching this 50 years from now
When i first seen the scene with Lt. Dan, i thought he commited suicide. Like ''I never said thank you for saving my life... Bye!''
“Forrest. I never thanked you for saving my life.” And still doesn’t thank Forrest for saving his life 😂
Props to that lady, who thought she was hearing some fairy tale story..... but still tried to encourage Forrest and not make him feel embarrassed for telling it.
my dad saved my life when i was two years old, and i never thought to thank him , but in his last days i was there for him. At least i have that, in his last two decades of life only one thing mattered , his four boys . He had made peace with his creator
I like how that one dude wasn't waiting on a bus, he was just listening to Forrest's story and then walked off.
This is one of the few movies ever made where everybody has strong character development and multiple character arcs with powerful resolutions that are beyond relatable. Every character is relatable, and everyone knows someone like them in real life, or we can recognize ourselves in any of them. Pure Magic.
One of the most beautiful scene ever exist on hollywood movies
I have lost count of how many times I have seen this movie and without fail everytime it makes me just wow
People say Forrest is an inspirational character but I will die on the hill that Lieutenant Dan is the best character in the movie
I love how Jenny didn’t look frustrated or put off when he asked “he got a daddy named Forrest too?” She had accepted him by then. She did finally grow up
I always thought Lt.Dan was trying to commit suicide, but I just realized he effectively baptized himself and became born again. He's an unnecessarily complex and powerful character to the point where you can make a film about his life alone and I would be just as fascinating as Forest Gump.
very perceptive comment. thanks
The T-Rex sound effect always gets me.
Tom looks so young here. He looks like he's in his late twenties in this movie.
Right after Forrest said, "God showed up," (0:14) I swear I heard a T-rex scream.
hahaha! True!
@@gillall4828 now I can't un-hear that
Dan probably had the wits to expand the operation
He jumped in sea to hide his tears
That last moment in the scene, the sky was so beautiful, the scene was perfect.
Dan: Where's this god of your's?
God: oh no I almost forgot to give Forest what he deserves, everything.
When I was a kid I thought Dan swimming off into the sea was him killing himself for some reason, but it was confusing because why would he thank Forest for saving him and then kill himself? It didn't make sense to me until years later I rewatched it a little older and a little smarter and finally understood the scene lol.
Lt Dan is there in Forrest's wedding at the back standing. See it carefully. He lived and was enjoying his life even without legs.
I love how Lt. Dan is basically like a version of Captain Ahab, except Lt. Dan just hated everything. But it was heartwarming at the end when he shows back up, he’s finally got prosthetics, and he’s engaged and seems happy.
When Lt.Dan thanks Forrest for saving his life, get me every time.
He didn't.
@@nitetrane98 he didn't say it, he showed it by staying by forrest's side for so long
@@nitetrane98 That's what gets me, Lt.Dan did thru his actions and eventually his body language.
Bubba was definitely with Forrest on his shrimp boating journey.
The people who listened to Forest are all very kind.
Still to this day, one of the most unexpected moments in the movie.
Me when I’m trying to play Rainbow six siege: “Alright boys let’s for a cohesive plan and go in there quietly”.
That one teammate: 0:50
Lt. Dan isn’t really thanking him for saving his life in Vietnam. He’s thanking him for giving his life back to him in Louisiana.
Everytime I see lieutenant Dan swim away, I always think he's just swimming away to his death. And every time he shows up again, I realize he's found happiness again, just being alive :P
Me, I was scared. But Lieutenant Dan - he was batshit crazy.
. . '' WE were sitting next to a millionaire. '' . . .UH . . YES YOU WERE !
great movie, acting, directing, production, story, tempo, writing. fantastic.
"Cuz right then....Gawd showed up"...This movie better be in the Congressional Library for posterity. A Treasure.
Leutenant Dan, you got legs
I always thought this movie was over hyped, until I watched it 20 times I’m in one month.
It was a privilege to grow up in the 90’s.
Gump; Mentor of Elvis, All-American college star, Vietnam veteran, ping pong Olympian, activist, entrepreneur, and multi-billionaire.
A man without his two legs and fishing shrimps, nowadays a man is missing just one finger and is applying for governmental help.
I always tell my friends never to see this movie without a handkerchief, or at least wear a long sleeved shirt.
Lt. Dan jumps into the gulf and get eaten by a tiger shark!
Nah. He just loses his arms :)
Top film and acting. Laughter and tears in one movie, just like real life.
This happened to my grandmother. She was on a shrimping boat with Bernard Arnault and she didn't have legs.
I make Million dollar Paintings with my face and sell them by the price of a 1 buck a minute and been on the news.
You will be on that Fortune Magazine after watching your Channel
2:01 wen u realize you probably talk to multimillionaires everyday, you just dont know or realize it....
Lt. Dan was legit calling out God because he had a death wish. Taking a swim in the river, without his legs, was a powerful scene.
Gary Sinise must have had a lot of upper body strength to sell his lack of legs so convincingly
I'm curious about a question. If you lose a part of your body like a leg or arm. Lose about 10%~20% of your body mass.
But you still have a complete 100% digest system. Will the rest of your body get extra nutrition and get healthier? Because the body part that used to need those are not there anymore.
Not really. You don't need as many calories as before, so eating the same amount as before can lead to diabetes and obesity.
@KINGofGUNS Oh~~nice to know about these. Thanks for ur reply. :]
It really depends on the person. I'd say the healthier choice would be to train your upper muscles and your arms to support the rest of your body, which could in theory demand even more calories. However this isn't true for most people, as depression really takes away all motivation to excercise, so they end up using less calories, and eating less. So the stomach shrinks.
Forrest Gump will go down in History as a Classic to be preserve for our future generations!
The first time I watched this movie, when Lieutenant Dan jumped into the water and started swimming into the ocean, I got really confused because I thought he actually went off and killed himself.
Arguably the best movie I ever saw.
“I never thanked you for saving my life.” Still doesn’t lol
Notice that the water was like glass when Lt Dan jumped in and the next frame it's choppy with a storm in the background.
0:15 t-rex roar from jurassic park
2:19 little did he know 😂😂😂
That T. rex sound didn’t go unnoticed
I bet the old lady felt stupid after seeing Forrest's face on the Fortune magazine
i was the assistant marine coordinator on gump. was right there for all of these scenes. got even better stories
We even oppened up a couple of restaurants in the real life universe
“We were sitting next to a millionaire” No. A Bilionaire, with a B
They sacrificed over a thousand shrimp for the movie
0:14 isn't that the TREX sound from Jurassic park?
Hahaha he's with his eyes closed on the magazine.
"... right then, God showed up"
For a moment, I was afraid the storm would wreck Forrest's boat, as some form of Divine Vengeance.
I feel like the lady in her realization of "Oh shit he wasn't lying" also realized not once was Forrest aware of the guy walking off meant he didn't believe him, so she wasn't about to clue him in and potentially make him upset.
God be like: "I've already shown you 37 different sign on where to shrimp shrimp. BUT OKEY THEN.
"Bayou le Batre." That was Bubba's hometown. Forrest's was "Greenbow."
His eyes were closed on the fortune magazine cover 😂
