How To Fix Your Elgato 4K X Not Working On Your Mac And iPad Pro After Updating To macOS 14.5

  • If your Elgato 4K X is not working with your Apple Silicon Mac computer such as your MacBook Pro M1 M2 M3 or your Mac desktop such as your Mac Studio M1 M2 after updating to the latest macOS 14.5 Sonoma. Then this workaround "fix" suggested by Elgato should get you back to some semi-working condition.
    Now I say semi-working condition because this "fix" only takes you back to your 4K X being usable in 5Gb/s mode, which will allow it to be seen by you iPad Pro again, if your 4K X had previously been set to 10Gb/s, which makes it incompatible with the iPad Pro. Plus you "should" now be able to use it again in OBS on your Apple Silicon Mac but only in 5Gb/s mode.
    On this point of the 5Gb/s mode. This means that you will be missing certain functionality that the 4K X was designed to do at 10Gb/s. Plus, the issues of lack of rec.709, MJPEG being used when it's not indicated and a bunch of other issues, still remain.
    Here's the suggestion that was made by elgato_james and Thank You 👍 elgato_james for your help.
    Try this - Disconnect 4K X and reboot your mac. Once it boots, do NOT open any video apps. Open Capture Device Utility an see if you can disable 10 Gbps support.

    There appears to be a new article on the Elgato 4K X Help site now acknowledging the MacOS 14.5/10Gbps issue and working on a fix

      Hi, Phil. Elgato are really late with this notification. Plus, they really should be more proactive in communicating issues and workarounds with their Mac users and use their UA-cam channel to show clear examples of workarounds etc. Also, Elgato simply aren’t thorough enough in their explanations, in that article on their website they don’t even say to reconnect the 4K X back to the Mac or more importantly, at what point to connect it back to the Mac. Cheers, Dave.

    This video has just saved my 4K X from being swiftly chucked back to Elgato at high speed after only 1 day off ownership. I'll be sticking with 5gb until I see a confirmed fix video from you, hopefully with a major firmware update and all features fixed, and ticking over smoothly.
    I'm completely baffled by how this product was released in the first place with so many issues and features missing, got to wonder who they've employed in the product QA testing department at Elgato for this to have happened, madness.

      @@F34RTEHR34PER Ah, Ok. But that was actually James from Elgato’s suggestion. I’ve added more to his suggestion as he wasn’t quite as thorough as he could have been. I also suspect that it’s a lot more than the video software running that he suggested was causing the problem. I noted issues with connected devices, Thunderbolt and USB, which Elgato don’t seem to be aware of. Anyway it was good of James to make the suggestion as I’m sure this video will be useful to someone out there. BTW. Going back to our previous conversation on Reddit, it would appear that the reason why you didn’t have the same issues I was, was because you were in 5Gb/s, which is why your Mac worked after the 14.5 update and why your iPad was working. I say working, they both still have issues but at least they record a picture.

    Hi David i have been following your videos rather religiously regarding Elgato 4K X issues with silicon macs. But still i went ahead with purchasing 4k x. I have M1 Macbook pro 14 inch base model. It might sound stupid but my only intention to buy 4k x is to play ps5 games on my mac, not interested in streaming, though many people dislike playing with the preview window. Since you have already used the 10 gbps firmware before the sonoma 14.5 suck up i have few questions.
    1) Have you found any latency difference between 10 gbps and 5 gbps in the OBS preview?
    2) is there any difference in the OBS preview smoothness and latency if you plug your mac to power or without power?
    I am seriously waiting for the 10 gbps and rec 709 firmware update though. Elgato guys need to live up to the reputation if that matters.

    • @DavidHarry
      @DavidHarry  3 місяці тому +1

      Hi. I've never really paid much attention to the latency in OBS, as I'm always monitoring the passthrough. However, I don't think there was any difference between 5 and 10Gb/s. It may sound logical that the latency may halve by doubling the bandwidth but in this instance the bandwidth is only accomodating higher bitrate video transport streams from the 4K X to the host computer. Depending on your OS you can try this for yourself. After updating the Elgato software you still get the option to switch back to 5Gb/s, so it may be worth trying it out. However, if you are still on an older software/OS setup where you are getting rec.709, then I would not recommend doing the update. Although I usually have my MacBook closed, under my work desk and have it connected to a Thunderbolt dock on my work desk (for connecting to my monitor, internet, drives etc.). Which means that I am on mains power. I have used the MacBook on its own with its battery and cant say that I've noticed any difference with latency, overlay etc. Within OBS. That said, I have my power settings on "High Power" even when on battery. BTW, I have been sent an interface by Accsoon that allows you to monitor a HDMI signal on an iPhone. It's basically a HDMI to USB C interface. I have not tested it yet but if it works well on the iPhone with low latency, I will see if the iOS App can be transferred to the Mac and test it. I'll do a video about that interface soon. Cheers, Dave.

    Hi Dave, when I follow your steps of shutting my Mac off and turning it back on and then connect the 4K X, it appears on the capture device utility, but there isn’t an option to turn off 10gbps. The last thing on my screen is “input EDID mode”

    • @Creeamzz
      @Creeamzz 2 місяці тому

      You have to hold down the "option" button on your keyboard inside of the capture device utility for the 10 Gbps setting to show up.

  • @rhoderzau
    @rhoderzau 2 місяці тому +1

    Hey David, have you figured out how to add custom EDID's to it? Elgato say that using "Internal" allows you to use custom EDID's but I can't figure out how to actually make use of them. I'd love to see a video on it if you know how.
    I'm trying to get the 4K X to work at a 4:3 resolution (2064 x 2752 for the iPad Pro).

    • @DavidHarry
      @DavidHarry  2 місяці тому

      @@rhoderzau Hi, I have not had any need so far so haven’t tried any EDID manipulation. However, this is not something that will make a difference for recording your iPad Pro output. Your iPad will be outputting in 16:9 with pillarbox (black bars to the sides) if in mirroring mode or it will be in full screen 16:9 if in Stage Manage mode. In any event, both output types are native 16:9 in either 4K/UHD or 1080, depending on your USB C dock or USB C/HDMI cable and not the actual resolution of the iPad’s screen. Just record the 16:9 output from your iPad and if it’s in screen mirrored mode, with the black bars at the sides, create a video project with the same resolution or aspect ratio as the iPad Pro screen and then centre cut/fit to height the recording. This will create an output form your editor that will be the exact same aspect ratio as your iPad. You can’t record at the exact same resolution as your iPad screen because the iPad will only output in a standard SMPTE TV resolution such as 1080, UHD. I do this a lot with my iPad Pro. It sounds like you are using the 13” iPad Pro as your resolution and aspect ratio are different to mine, I’m on the 11” and they are different. The 11” is more of a 3:2 aspect ratio, whereas the 13” is basically 4:3. When I record my iPad in mirroring mode it’s in 4K/UHD in 16:9 with black bars at the sides. The active picture are in the centre of the 4K/UHD 16:9 capture is 3092x2160, so I create a project that’s 3092x2160 and when I add the 16:9 recording to the timeline I do it as fit to height, this then aligns the centre of the 16:9 recording to the project and the actually visible screen area is correct. Just work out the 4K/UHD equivalent of your iPad’s native screen native resolution, by using its aspect ratio and scale that to 4K/UHD and then do the same as I do. Here’s an example on my gaming channel. If you were on an 11” iPad Pro and played this back in full screen in an appropriate browser it would fill screen properly. It won’t for you as I think you’re on a 13” ua-cam.com/video/uw8mzxyMXUA/v-deo.html Cheers, Dave.

      @@DavidHarry Thanks David, I really appreciate your detailed reply.y I should have been clearer however. I’m trying to get a native iPad resolution to be captured from a source such as a macOS or Windows machine so that the UVC capture preview can displayed on an iPad. I.e. using the iPad as a high refresh rate, HDR, OLED portable monitor. I often use Moonlight/Sunshine for this which runs amazingly from Windows to iPad (and a custom resolution set) but Sunshine runs terribly on macOS and I’d like to not need a network.
      After some tinkering with BetterDisplay resolution overrides I’ve been able to get it outputting to the capture card resolution, and I’ve also overridden the EDID to add support for the custom resolution, but all UVC capture apps on the iPad stick to 16:9 or 16:10 resolutions and most don’t even allow for 120hz.
      However, when the captured image is shown in FaceTime, it uses the correct 4:3 (iPad 13”) aspect ratio, just not mirrored so it’s being passed through correctly. I’m going to work on an iPad app today that accepts custom resolutions.
      Assuming that works I’ll give this all a go with the HD 60 X too, which would be cheaper and have very slightly improved latency for the preview. It could be that there’s enough bandwidth there for 2752 X 2064 @ 120hz although half the resolution with MetalFX upscaling added could work nicely too.
