      I don't think scores define a person. Her personality and curiosity are one of a kind. Although I have higher scores, I am nowhere near to her determination, courage, and curiosity.

    We love a strong woman of color striving toward such a grand higher education! I know you (probably) haven't started at Stanford yet, but do you know what mixed-race/POC representation looks like at the university? In other words, have you experienced the full-scale diversity of what Stanford offers? If so, pls elaborate. I'm a junior, so this info. is vv impt. to me as I research uni and where I think is a good fit for my future. Thanks!

    why are so many people applying to 10+ colleges....isnt just 3 or 4 enough ....you can only go to 1 college...1

    • @cyand
      @cyand  6 років тому +24

      Mike Suzio each college I applied to, I applied for a different reason. Each of them had a very specific program that I was interested in. The schools in the UK were all fine art programs that featured a different learning style. There was only one application for all 5 of them so that made sense considering I had no idea which ones I would be accepted at as they all had different portfolio review and interview processes. The only US school I had heard back from before the regular decision process was Stanford, which I loved but I wasn’t 100% sold on yet both program-wise and financially, as I knew I was still waiting to hear back from USC about the Iovine and Young Academy and about their merit-based scholarships. Choosing between an art-based program and a traditional college was one of my biggest concerns so when I was applying to the Brown/RISD dual degree I knew it was the perfect middle ground, so I knew that would be a huge decision point if I were to get in there. Program-wise it was perfect, and USC, B/RISD, and Stanford were the schools I was constantly struggling between up until the final enrollment decision deadline. Financially, I needed some more options in schools so that is also where GA Tech comes in as it is my in-state school. Duke and Harvard are both amazing programs who traditionally are able to provide good financial aid so I applied there both because I loved the schools and so that I would have more financial options to weigh and consider. I think the amount of schools I applied to was perfect to my situation because I had no idea which school and program would best fit me and my family’s needs in the end.

      @Mcs Capital yeah i can see if you want to go to an ivy league applying to all eight... Princeton harvard yale have 5 or 6% acceptance columbia and upenn a little easier

    • @Houseofnyxrecords
      @Houseofnyxrecords 5 років тому +10

      columbia and upenn are not a little easier. People apply to multiple schools due to the fact that many of these elite schools are essentially random whether or not you'll get in. It's not uncommon to hear about students who get into schools like MIT, but get rejected from Dartmouth or Cornell. By applying to multiple schools, you maximize your chances of getting into at least one good school. Similarly, in my case, I'm applying to many schools because not all financial aid packages are equal, and its important that us poor people can actually afford to go to college.

    Can you explain more about your ISEF experience? How were you able to do research at universities in only 9th grade?

    • @cyand
      @cyand  6 років тому +5

      Michael Wang absolutely! A lot of the research I did took a lot of persistence. First, I created an initial proposal for a treatment process, which came mainly from researching the capacities of new medical technologies, and then I theorized based on their uses how they could be used to treat localized areas without harming surrounding healthy cells. Once I had the process, I went to the universities where they were actively researching the technologies and contacted each of the professors and showed them my theory, asking if I would be able to work with them. So I ended up being able to work with Georgia Tech’s Biological Sciences lab with Prof. John McDonald. I think the most important part of the process was to be able to show the work that was put in before hand to show that it was a serious pursuit. Afterwards, I was able to test each step of the theory, it was really rewarding to see the results :)

    How on earth did your parents let you apply to so many universities? You easily racked up over $1000 of application fees.

    • @cyand
      @cyand  2 роки тому +1

      You’re 100% right, the application fees for colleges are incredibly expensive, esp when considering having to send SAT, ACT, etc. scores to each school as well. I am personally lucky that we had the means for this, but I acknowledge this is a privilege many people aren’t afforded. It’s another example of how the admissions process is riddled with inequities that allow people who have more access to resources to have an easier time navigating the process/having more options. I definitely want to recognize that I have always been in an incredibly fortunate situation where these haven’t been obstacles for me, but I think drastic change needs to happen to make the system more accessible in general.

    Stanford doesn't give two fucks about stats. That's what they even say in their common data set. They place way more importance on your essays and non quantifiable aspects of an applicant. Thus your central focus is way more important to achieving admission. I focused my app for example on my passion for everything related to language. So writing was an activity which I demonstrated through my leadership positions heading the writers group at my school. Then there was Spanish club which I was President of.
    Then I founded and led the first ever NACLO preparation team senior year of highschool.
    I didn't get a perfect score on Tue SAT--superscored it was barely 2200. And took it twice...I figured I wouldn't gain much from taking it a third time. The ACT was better for me...34. Yeah I didn't dip poorly on either but it wasn't n like buddies of lime who scored perfectly on the both of them.
    My GPA was pretty good almost perfect 3.93 final 4.6 weighted. Highest GPA outta my highschool history tho hell yeah boiii.
    I know my intended major is really a bump for me. Linguistics isn't a common field of study and sure enough there are only like 12 others majoring in it.
    I got two glowing recommendations from two teachers I knew well. Coincidentally they were BOTH graduates of uc Berkeley. And here they were giving me their all in rec for Berkeley's rival, Stanford. It hurt them I'm sure; I now regret my choice of Stanford.
    I got a likely letter from Stanford fwiw. They apparently found me particularly compelling bc I was poor as dirt yet accomplished as much as anyone else richer than I. Shit I was the brilliant poor schmuck tutoring the rich kids when they couldn't understand a subject.
    Oh yeah and I tutored in every subject to pay for electricity. Yeah I was poor af.
    Thinking of returning now after having been on a leave of absence for 7 years now. Think it's worth the debt I'd endure...$200k basically. So full price when before I was on a full ride...
    Oh how the great have fallen...

    So let us be real here.. for those asking how she got in?? She is Black and affirmative action is real. Her stats is subpar. I am done. LOL

    • @cyand
      @cyand  5 років тому +43

      artem leon thank you for your comments! Affirmative Action is definitely one aspect of what they keep into consideration and that definitely played a role, I'm sure! However, similarly, stats are also not the end all, be all of the application process. I realize that I haven't yet had the time to upload my extracurriculars video, but personally I believe that aspect of my application played the largest role. I'm going to try to get that up soon because I think seeing the full extent of the application is super important. I would say my stats are average. Yes, my APs could be considered subpar but 35 on the ACT I was actually pretty happy with. I think it's important to emphasize that not one portion of the application is more important than any other, the most important is the story everything paints as a collection of information. When I spoke to my admissions counselor he mentioned that when he reads apps the ones that stick out the most are the ones in which he can see the most personality and drive in their collective story. Remember, when they are creating their class, they are looking for students that they would most like to have in their classrooms and who the professors will most want to teach and discuss with. I hope that helps explain a little bit! It might take a bit for the video to go up, but if you want you can DM me on Instagram or email me and I'd be more than happy to share the rest of my application with you!

      Something that is important to remember is that they don’t compare your scores to the average nationwide, they compare them to the average at your school. so they are looking at how well you possibly could have done relative to your education and experience and resources available. This is also one large reason that gpa is not as “important” or can vary widely across most admitted students.
