Oh. I was convinced they were British. I mean the song is over a decade old and whenever it plays at a party in the UK, all of the students start to dance and sing
OK I'm genuinely curious, can someone please explain to me why this song is soo massively popular in Britain? I'm American and this song along with the rest of Hot Fuss was absolutely huge here when it came out, and it's still a beloved classic to this day. But I'm just curious why THIS particular band and THIS particular song seems to speak to you Britons the most and elevate it above any other American (or indeed English) alternative rock/pop song? What separates it from all the others? Is it the lyrics? The melody/ instrumentation? What is it about the song that makes it quintessentially British? I really would like to hear an English perspective on this as it's just rather fascinating to me
Mr Brightside should become the British National Anthem. No matter where you are, no matter what country, the moment that songs comes out in a club, Brits chant to it and know every single word.

Their debut album, Hot Fuss, was so Brit coded though! I can see why the Brits embraced them fully first. However, as an American, I'm proud to call them the best American rock band of the past 20 years. Most of my favorite bands over the years have all been British, but I'm glad to say the Killers are my favorite modern rock band. It also helps that Brandon Flowers is such a great front man that is very easy on the eyes, hahaha.
As a Brit I think I speak for all of us in welcoming them as honourary Brits. They may not have been born here but they can be one of us because of Mr Brightside

@@Shadow-In-The-East I'm not really sure? I feel like it's most likely the music, it's a catchy rhythm that quickly and easily draws you in. But the lyrics are also a part of why we love it so much: the heartache of missing out on love, and the jealousy of losing that love to someone else, is a feeling that a lot of people are likely able to relate to, and the fact that both verses are the same lyrics means it easy to remember if you feel like singing along. However, a lot of people nowadays, especially my age, have a sort of nostalgia when listening to this song also: when it first released, Mr Brightside was a massive hit in the UK, and so it was played often at parties, weddings, celebrations etc. Anyone my age listening to it is immediately brought back to that era of their life, when times were easy. And I think that's essentially what makes it such the cultural hit that it is in the UK: not only is it a catchy alt rock song with lyrics that people can relate to, but it's also got a sense of nostalgia for the good days, when things weren't so difficult in life and you could just have fun.

I'm an American that has lived in Britain for the last 20 years... I honestly thought The Killers were British. I am somehow a little tiny bit happier knowing they are fellow Yanks that are just as home in Britain as they are in the USA... perhaps a bit more so actually!
I went thru a rather similar experience only just a couple of years ago in regards to Stanley Kubrick. I'd apparently all these years never managed to hear him ever actually speak (or it was so little so long ago I just forgot), one day I found some documentary footage on here from The Shining's shoot and my jaw just hit the floor when he spoke with a general American accent. There was just something about him that always just sent me a message that he was British.
Actually the memory of him hearing Dont Look Back in Anger makes a lot of sense. That anthemic character of so much of what we went on to write. That's a cool story, and I can totally see how Mr Brightside was conceived as an 'answer' to that song.
This song is just an epic symbol of various factors of the generation who were lucky enough to grab it 1st time round. It was a student's night out floor basher, it was a festival goers chant, it was the high energy song that made the dance floor jump, it was everywhere, because it was fucking brilliant!!! It is anthemic ❤
The Killers definitely filled the gap for me when I was in high school and didn’t want to listen to pop anymore or the shitty rock music that was coming out of America in the early 2000s. The Killers were my guide to Alternative Rock music, which led me to the exact bands they mentioned. Their first album will always be in my top favorite albums for that reason, and I will always have a soft spot for this amazing band.
I think the Killers really connected both sides of the pond. At the time you had the pop-punk scene here in the states and that great British rock scene on the other end which had a following here but not as big then Mr. Brightside came and brought those two groups of fans together. I remember all the punk/emo kids in school liked it and all the alt/indie rock kids liked it. Great times.
I watched the Killers when they warmed up for U2 and it was like watching 2 concerts, I then went to a Killers concert a few years later and left equally as chuffed!! The only band I’ve seen twice!!
I love that Brandon singled out Don't Look Back In Anger as an inspiration to their songwriting, that song is like the national anthem of 90s British kids whereas Mr. Brightside is like the national anthem of 2000s British kids. 😄
Its between Don't Look Back In Anger, Live Forever and The Masterplan. Think of the reaction when a song is played on a night out, Don't Look Back In Anger is one of them where everyone loses their voice
I used to work in a hotel that held weddings, proms and parties, and at every single one of them (without fail) the DJ would play Mr Brightside and the whole room would go wild.
Honestly, The Killers are with my favourites (i mostly listen too British bands) The Beatles,Oasis,Joy Divison,New order, Blue mondays, stone roses and Kasabian etc Tyese lads are just as class
As long as Nirvana’s “Nevermind”, Led Zeppelin IV and Dark Side of the Moon exist, it will never be “ever” for those first six on Hot Fuss. Some great songs though!
Mr. Brightside is literally the best example of cross-cultural trade. I'm from America and I love it, people from Great Britain love it, we can all love it regardless of where we live and it's great
I remember the killers concert I went to 8 yrs ago in New Zealand, like it was yesterday. It felt like everyone sang Mr Brightside together when it came on. Its an anthem in every country that these guys play in.
“JEALOUSY TURNING SAINTS INTO THE SEA, CHOKiNG ON YOUR ALIBIS,SWIMMING THROUGH SICK LULLABIES!!!!” Then people wonder why they can’t speak the following morning
I bought Hot Fuss in early 2003, my mates hated it...had it in my 'CD Case' and I lost it.... found it again when they got massive a few months later and then there literally not being enough copies in circulation for people to buy the album. I gave it to the DJ at my work to play. Wild times.
The night clubs in 2006 when I was 17...Mr Brightside was THE song. Nice to see Americans speak so fondly of British influence, it's normally us Brits singing in fake American accents and talking about Hollywood.
I was bopping to this when 29 and just turned 50 and rock out still so it’s a song that’s v much stood test of time. A lot of us Gen Xers were the first to rock out to this back in the day and we love it because it just reminds you of those great times and it’s amazing how it still brings all the ages and teenagers onto the dance floor at the end of any good night out!
The British: “What!? They aren’t British, they’re American? But every British person knows Mr. Brightside by heart.” Me (an American): “I knew I wasn’t an American”
in 2004 I was really into alternative music that was hot in the uk because we had mtv2 uk on cable. so glad to witness in real time the birth of mr brightside, especially as someone their age

Brandon flowers is literally one of the most underrated minds in music. Dude is a genius
Actually the memory of him hearing Dont Look Back in Anger makes a lot of sense. That anthemic character of so much of what we went on to write. That's a cool story, and I can totally see how Mr Brightside was conceived as an 'answer' to that song.
This was lovely.
Yazeed Abdulrahman A (Saudi) Alharbi
shut up "rosianna"
This song is just an epic symbol of various factors of the generation who were lucky enough to grab it 1st time round. It was a student's night out floor basher, it was a festival goers chant, it was the high energy song that made the dance floor jump, it was everywhere, because it was fucking brilliant!!! It is anthemic ❤
In the uk Mr brightside is the song that’s played at the end of a club night that makes everyone sing along like we’re all family
Mr Brightside has the ability to turn a room full of strangers into what feels like a family 😂
Sounds gay
*Half of The Killers
meh, the other two can fuck off. Like The Shins is to James Mercer, the Killers is to Flowers.
It's mostly just him doing everything.
no, Ronnie is the amazing
Adam Majorcsik I miss Mark and Dave. Their replacements suck ass.
Yes they are hard working half. #respect
The killers and other guy that seems to play the drums
I think the Killers really connected both sides of the pond. At the time you had the pop-punk scene here in the states and that great British rock scene on the other end which had a following here but not as big then Mr. Brightside came and brought those two groups of fans together. I remember all the punk/emo kids in school liked it and all the alt/indie rock kids liked it. Great times.
I will forever be in love with The Killers and Brandon Flowers
I watched the Killers when they warmed up for U2 and it was like watching 2 concerts, I then went to a Killers concert a few years later and left equally as chuffed!!
The only band I’ve seen twice!!
I love that Brandon singled out Don't Look Back In Anger as an inspiration to their songwriting, that song is like the national anthem of 90s British kids whereas Mr. Brightside is like the national anthem of 2000s British kids. 😄
Mr Brightside has links to Don't look back in anger. The 2 best songs ever!
So Live Forever and Champagne Supernova? What about them?
Sebastian Elytron Good songs but i was just pointing out how two great songs had links.
K's Clan Live Forever is oasis' best tune. Fact.
Its between Don't Look Back In Anger, Live Forever and The Masterplan. Think of the reaction when a song is played on a night out, Don't Look Back In Anger is one of them where everyone loses their voice
James Brady In that case We Are the Champions is the greatest song ever written?
Mr Brightside is my personal anthem of my life...hello from South Africa
I'm glad I'm not the only one who thought these guys were British. When I first heard their interviews I was like wtf. Mind blown
We love the Killers here in the UK. Best band ever imho!
I used to work in a hotel that held weddings, proms and parties, and at every single one of them (without fail) the DJ would play Mr Brightside and the whole room would go wild.
Honestly, The Killers are with my favourites (i mostly listen too British bands)
The Beatles,Oasis,Joy Divison,New order, Blue mondays, stone roses and Kasabian etc
Tyese lads are just as class
The first six tracks of Hot Fuss may be the greatest opening of any album since 2000, maybe ever.
Nope, although wonderful.. I have to give this honour to the entire 'Permission to Land' album 🙌
This song won’t go away and will never get old! That you so so much for music my grandchildren will love in years to come x
0:46 made me immediately think he was gonna say “coming out of my cage” i think i need help
I swear, anyone who has ever worked at a bar or live venue that had karaoke or open mic nights suffers with PTSD from this song.
The first thing of the baby to develop in the womb is the lyrics to Mr Brightside.
Still remember seeing them in 2005 in Magna, Utah at a small venue. They blew me away. I was 18 and obsessed!
When I sing this song on the karaoke it absolutely unleashes something else In me. LOL absolute belter✌🏼🏴🇬🇧🇺🇸
Long live the special relationship
"Mr. " is missing in the title.
No no, they're definitely just called 'The Killers'
“JEALOUSY TURNING SAINTS INTO THE SEA,
CHOKiNG ON YOUR ALIBIS,SWIMMING THROUGH SICK LULLABIES!!!!”
Then people wonder why they can’t speak the following morning
Oop look at me I have my political compass on my pfp I’m so quirky
Oscar keevash “ooo, look at me trying to start an argument on UA-cam because I have nothing better to do an my life sucks” piss off and get a life
BUT IT'S JUST THE *PRICE I PAY*
I'm hoarse just thinking about it 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Mr Brightside is such a timeless song that has so much meaning for anyone that hears it.
I bought Hot Fuss in early 2003, my mates hated it...had it in my 'CD Case' and I lost it.... found it again when they got massive a few months later and then there literally not being enough copies in circulation for people to buy the album. I gave it to the DJ at my work to play. Wild times.
Discovered them on lste night Channel 4, just like Bloc Party and Libertines. WTF happened to that shit
I think England is their city now. TAKE THAT NICK
King Milo huni England’s a country
You don’t get it do you
Lol,good one mate.
The killers the best British American band in the world . Hands down .
I can’t think of Mr Brightside without picturing Cameron Diaz bopping around the cottage in The Holiday.
And she seems to be singing it with a British accent too 😂
That song helped me through many a break up on nights out, you belt that out and feel so much better.
Just happy to be here...
Im British and I was born 2 years after mr brightside i literally just knew the words. Its like evolution but more useful
Who else is going to play Mr. Brightside after this interview? 😂😂😂
Thea Atanasova it’s not even that great compared to there other songs
Omg he stil looks just as beautiful ....
Brightside by heart.”
Me (an American): “I knew I wasn’t an American”
I like Mr Brightside because when I hear it on a night out, I know thats my cue to go home.
I'M MR. BRIGHTSIDE
keyboard solo
i love that mr brightside is like call back to don't look back in anger, listening to them now just feels so surreal, like I get what they intended
in 2004 I was really into alternative music that was hot in the uk because we had mtv2 uk on cable. so glad to witness in real time the birth of mr brightside, especially as someone their age
