I love when the "experts" talk about how long it takes to grow flowers before Jane the gardener gets them. I certainly have a better understanding of why things cost what they do. I've learned a lot from your channel and appreciate the effort you put into your videos. Most videos don't tell how long something takes to get the flowers you are craving for without getting boring.. You always seem to give us just information but not to much. I bought a standard Pinkie Winkie last year on sale for $100 and didn't pass out from the cost. Yesterday I saw that it is starting to get buds - do happy.
Wow! I just planted all of my peonies from Costco a few days ago in full sun and I live in Southern California! So, I will be digging them up and moving them to my front yard where they will only get a few hours of morning sun. I’m so happy you asked Eileen all the questions I needed to know answers to! Thank you Janey! I moved into my house 1 month after you moved into yours and I had a blank slate to plan from, as well. Your videos have been a huge inspiration to me. I’ll be posting some videos of my progress on my UA-cam channel soon! Hugs! 🥰🌸💝🙌🏻
I had no idea it takes that long for the bare roots to flower!! Well now I know it’s not me 😂😂 I definitely learned so much about growing peonies. They are such gorgeous plants.
I'm right there with the girls on loving bunnies. Love it when you girls go out on gardening outings! Love learning when you take those gardening tours. 💚💗
I watched one of your videos yesterday and now its 130 in the morning and I woke up thinking of your garden. I woke up at the overwhelming thought of the size of your yard. I love gardening , but have a normal size front and back yard... my back is more like a courtyard , with lots of plants and trees in pots. My yard is more like your old one. I can't even relate to the task before you, Its like having to design, and plant and maintain a park all by yourself! It would consume every waking moment. But , you obviously must love the challenge. Maybe if the entire center circle was a pond with large boulders surrounded by trees and paths and benches... like a park. But all landscaping is beyond my capabilities. You are amazing!
Love it when the experts give plant advice, very helpful... Ilene said Napa gets hot , your area even hotter but I think it gets even hotter up here in far northern CA, it can go for weeks over 100 , so very intense, my plants don't like it anymore than the ppl do, so part shade here means pretty much full shade and water in early mornings.
Over and over I say thank you for starting your Best of the West garden, I have really struggled to find plants that will survive, and how to help them survive :), our harsh CA summers.
All my peonies (both herbaceous and itoh) have been purchased bare root and I’ve always gotten 1-3 blooms the first year and many blooms the second year.
I was so depressed to hear that lady say that it would take 5-7 years to get a bare root to bloom…I bought some at Costco and I’m in zone 9 but it literally sprouted in 3 days. All 3 of them are at least a foot tall. I hope next year I get blooms. Definitely trying the ice trick.
I’m in zone five northeast Illinois, peonies are my favorites!!! I have grown all three types. At my last garden I had a red tree peony and a purple one-that purple tree peony was one of the most beautiful flowers I have ever grown! I wish I had dug it up and brought it with me to my current home. Last year I bought my first Itoh peonies,, I have Bartzella and one I think is called Olivia Rose, I hope to see some blooms this year but I probably won’t. My two favorite herbaceous peonies are Sarah Bernhardt even though her stems aren’t very strong but my Coral Charm is an absolute knockout!
I am up here in WI with peonies that don’t bloom. We limbed up a nearby tree last year, so hopefully that will help a bit this year. Do you fertilize yours with anything right now as they start to pop up?
@@tinah8065 peonies don’t love fertilizer and they usually do best with some compost and you will see different recommendations on timing, but less is more. Hollingsworthpeonies has a good article on this. I fertilize after blooming late summer. If yours aren’t blooming at all- if they are young may need time can take years for a first bloom. If they are mature that stopped blooming make sure you haven’t let soil or mulch build up too deep around eyes. Clear away every now and then. Don’t cut back your foliage too soon bc they need to recharge after they bloom. It probably is needing the sun and cutting back your tree will help.
@tinah8065 make sure that your peony roots are close to the surface! They should be planted like bearded iris, where there is one inch or less of soil covering them. This is a common reason why they don't bloom.
Wow, this is a most fascinating video - I LOVE peonies but never knew the work it takes to grow them. Now, the pricing makes so much more sense. Props to you, Janey for this most informative video!
I love peonies too. I have many herbaceous peonies. My mom had heirloom varieties in her garden. I was able to get one of each from her. I would put one in your shade garden under Shea’s window.
Love your peony selection. We live in southern VT, have about 4 tree peonies. We had to wait about 3 years for our first bloom for almost all of them. . They came in a container from a local greenhouse similar to the one you purchased here. I was told -The adage for peonies is “1st year sleep, 2nd year creep, 3rd year leap! Good luck with yours!!
I find it so interesting to hear "part shade to shade" for peonies here in California because the peonies planted by the previous owner of our home were in shade & struggling horribly vs an absolutely gorgeous peonie growing a few blocks over was in full sun & had stunning blooms. My experience so far is that peonies can take the hot summer sun here in Sacramento area but they need more water, kinda like hydrangeas need more water the more sun they get. My peonies do get some dappled shade from mid afternoon but they are definitely in full sun for 6-8 hours during the summer.
Thank you!!!!!! I’ve been dying to grow peonies here in 8B almost 9 and I feel so much better about the investment because of this video!!! Thank you!!!
My word, she not only knows everything you need to know about the plants, she even knows what your soil is like. I'm thinking, I really hate to wish summer away, but I'm really looking forward to seeing the garden in July/Aug. And I too, remember hanging at the mall, I'm old enough to remember when malls were the new big shopping experience, well in Md anyway.
Janey, your garden is looking so pretty. You and Jason should be very proud of what you have accomplished in such short time. Thank you for your channel. Love it!
The Japanese have a winter peony festival where they force them into cold houses during the summer and since the winters are mild enough, they build little huts for them and let them bloom with snow on the ground!
Your a great inspiration to all us gardeners and your garden has transformed like crazy overnight, such color and plant growth. Can't wait to see what's next.
Oh, yay! You're planting peonies again! I was wondering if you were going to grow one on your new property. Peonies were the whole reason I subscribed to your channel at first, but now I just watch because your new property is looking stunning! You, your family, and friends work beautifully together to make your dream garden come to life. I find it exciting to watch your progress.
Peonies are my FAVORITE perennials! For once, people in warmer zones can be jealous of my Midwest, zone 5a growing conditions. I have at least ten varieties. Still, I learned some things from this video. Thanks, Janey.
What a great choice on your peonies. But honestly you can’t go wrong with neither one of those colors. You picked the right spot in your garden for your peonies it’s going pop there. Everything is coming along nicely. 👍🏽 Happy Gardening 🪴🪻
I loved this video today. Always enjoy when you visit VanWinden's. And, love watching what you are planting and doing at the house. Everything is looking so good! I'm planing like a crazy person too here in Texas. You would think I had a UA-cam Channel too. I may have to get a job to support my habit! :)
Glad you did this video my daughter gave me some barefoot I can't think of name of hand but I don't think I will be doing them after hearing about the work I'm in your county so I'll see how yours do first 😊They are such a beautiful bloomer and I have heard they can last 30 yrs or more if taken care of.
I have 40 peonies planted at my house in Los Molinos. They are full day sun and shaded after 3 to 4ish p.m. The roots are just barely 1 inch covered with dirt, They are so beautiful!!
Ilene should write a book lol I’ve planted about 15 bareroot peonies from Home Depot the last 3 years and that would explain why they haven’t bloomed yet 🤦♀️ (I had two Itoh peonies bloom) if I would have known they take so long I definitely would have invested in bigger roots!
Hi , live in S.California and love your channel. I thought you were going plant your peony in your shade garden. I would also like to see you plant a gardenia & aloestemeria in your garden.
I am in Georgia,a little NW of Atlanta and I have a hard time with peonies 😢 Deer 🦌 try to eat them , even though " they" say that they are "deer resistant" None of the deer around here are hesitant about anything !! 😢 I spend lots of money 💸 on deer fence!! I will have to talk to a peony expert around here! From Georgia with love ❤
I bought 10 peony tubers from Costco and Lowe’s, planted them up Feb 1 and I already have 1 bud on one of the plants and all have leaves/fingers growing. I do live in TN so it gets colder here, perhaps that’s why.
Here in Central Oklahoma, I have my peonies planted in a raised bed where they get morning sun and afternoon shade. They do very well with no attention over than watering and mulch. The flowers never last more than a day or two because we never fail to get a heavy rain right after they bloom. I’m going to start picking them and bringing them inside.😊
Thank you for sharing this information! I just started gardening last year and would watch Garden Answer when I learned about zones I looked for someone in my zone and found you. I've enjoyed watching you grow and I'm always learning from you. 💜
You made a great choice with buying the Duchesse de Nemours peony! About 10 years ago, I was at a greenhouse in September, and the perennials were on clearance. I bought the Duchesse de Nemours because it was only $5.00! It has become my favorite performer among my dozen peonies. You will love it!
Good morning from Livermore CA! Have a wonderful girls day. I have four beautiful daughters who are all grown with families of their own. I sure miss those days, but now I get to play with my grand babies. 💙❤️
Hi Janey, Love this video on Peonies, I've had mine for 22yrs it was A Mother's Day gift ( there a beautiful pink) from my Husband, still doing great just wish the flowers would last longer can't remember the name of it, I give mine coffee (cold) it seems to help it so green and the flowers are huge, last yr. Had lots of rain it weighted the flowers down they got so wet that the flowers turned brown it was so sad, BUT this year I'm prepared got my huge umbrella read, lol. Can't wait to see yours in its full glory crossing my fingers for you. Your Walk path is looking great. Spending time with your daughters is a gem, that brought back memories fot me. Thank you for your knowledge an inspiration, have a great rest of the day, 🌱 🙂 👋
Nice informative video, fun day out with your girls and looks like the path is about finished can’t wait for your next walk about the garden and to see all the blooms 😊
You got the name Nemours right 👏 in French duchesse is pronounced more like « sh » than « tch » but she won’t mind will she 😁😉 I think it’s one I got in a very small container last year and almost lost it and now she’s back but I have a coral one in another pot and I’m not sure which one is which so I’m hesitant to plant it 😅 I love peonies, even if they flower less longer than roses. This year I’ll do a special garden tour just about them so I can look back at them when I miss them 😊 good information from Eyleen ( sorry not sure how to spell it), I wonder if in my south west of France she would recommend shade too . I agree with you, breeders should do more peonie trees and it oh. Here they are less expensive than where you live but they are still pricey.
Girls day! You educate us with Ilene. 9B Central Florida, too hot I think. But. I live for your blooming display! I LOVE your Camilla and oh my heart, Daisies and Daffodils and tulips! I found a variety of Daffodils that grow well here and will be ordering soon for next year. Daisies going in asap. Flowers to me are the best beauty ever! Thank you for sharing.
Just want to say your garden is looking so beautiful. I cannot get over how much your land and garden has changed since the beginning. Maybe time to show before and after shots for the new people that have started watching because it is such a transformation. Have a wonderful day in your garden!! 🥰
Hi Janey🌺 . Wonderful tour with the girls to Napa and good infomation from Eileen about peonies .I will plant peoney in the same area like you because we have hot weather and your peoney will be amazing in your garden it's flowers look so beautiful . Have a fantastic day . 🌻🌺🌻
I bought one peony every year for 6 years and then I stopped because I usually don’t get any blooms. One of my peonies is really big this year so I am hoping it will create some gorgeous blooms! Thanks for the video! I love Aileen’s expertise! I am definitely interested in getting an Itoh Peony now! And the progress you are making on the new property is just incredible! Mind-blowing how fast it’s coming along!
I love peonies but cannot grow them in Southeast Florida. As a child in NJ, my mom grew a glorious peony hedge all across the back of our yard. As for Eileen, she is priceless, right? The path is looking so good and the shot of Jason thru the Daffys and Tulips and Daisies was pretty creative. As always, thanks Janey.
Some peonies are $80 here where i live in zone 3/4 and are easy to grow! $80 is VERY reasonable for all that work. 😊 Most common peonies are about $25, but other less common ones can be $110 (and that’s Canadian Dollar). So excited for you, i LOVE peonies & have 10…so far.
My forever favorite plants are peonies.... all different colors. I love the white you chose, the burgundy Eileen chose and the different shades of pinks. Growing up (MI) , my father had planted them along the driveway and throughout the landscape. It was a beautiful sight and now a beautiful memory ❤
So good to find out more about peonies. I lucked out moving into a house with 7, but want to learn more. I have white, rose, and pink blooms. They typically bloom at the end of May. Looking forward to seeing that whole pathway when completed! Thanks for showing us the blooms too. It is the time of year we can hardly wait.
You should plant sweet autumn clematis by your fence. It's beautiful when late july-August time in my Michigan garden., it will look great on the northwest side of garden fence., I've just moved to Reno and got a rude surprise on soil here..
I bought all my herbaceous peonies as tubers and I got flowers in the second year. The third year I could already cut some and pair them with my roses as bouquet. They are not expensive and grow fast here. But I don´t live in such a hot zone as you do. I love my peonies. But I have to deal with our winters for it. 😁
Thank you so much for this video!! I planted a peony 4 days ago in full sun. I’m going to need to move it!!! So thankful I saw this before it had a chance to root in! I know they don’t like being moved.
@@gardenandjoy hi neighbor! last year I did because it was such a wet season. This year I will spray copper fungicide once the foliage emerges for black spot and powdery mildew. I’m on IG with this name too if you want to connect there.
I’m really hoping my peonies bloom this year in Sacramento. I planted a bulb 3 years ago and it’s finally come up after I ignored it! Thank you for this tutorial. I’m making sure they get shade in the afternoon and hoping for the best since it’s my favorite flower. I’ll toss some ice on them!!
Hi Janey! I am so happy that the peony went in the ground right away! I was about to ask why you were collecting canned plants and not planting them😂😂😂😂
I bought one in bloom, followed all the instructions for planting & it was beautiful. Watched it come up with great foliage for the next three years, no flowers 😫 In TN 7a, so should’ve gotten plenty cold enough. Too finicky for me!
Morning. I love the talk about peonies. I was wondering why did you not place it by hosta and water fountain at the side of your house? The pairing of hosta, peonies and ferns is absolutely lovely in a shade garden
Question Janey, why not plant it in your “ shade garden” ? I love Ilene, so much great information! Peonies are definitely a favorite of mine! Your progress is something much fun to watch!

Your orchard bed is looking so pretty. The footage of Jason at 21:27 shows pretty spring blooms. That must make you excited!
It's starting to look like home! Love seeing you enjoying the results of these last months of effort - and getting to enjoy them along with you here!

I thought it would be going in there too. It would have been a great up close spot to enjoy all the blooms

Yes Peonies are so beautiful.
Peony so pretty😊
I bought one peony every year for 6 years and then I stopped because I usually don’t get any blooms.
One of my peonies is really big this year so I am hoping it will create some gorgeous blooms!
Thanks for the video! I love Aileen’s expertise! I am definitely interested in getting an Itoh Peony now!
And the progress you are making on the new property is just incredible! Mind-blowing how fast it’s coming along!
Afternoon Everyone 🪴🌷🪴
I love peonies but cannot grow them in Southeast Florida. As a child in NJ, my mom grew a glorious peony hedge all across the back of our yard. As for Eileen, she is priceless, right? The path is looking so good and the shot of Jason thru the Daffys and Tulips and Daisies was pretty creative. As always, thanks Janey.
Some peonies are $80 here where i live in zone 3/4 and are easy to grow! $80 is VERY reasonable for all that work. 😊
Most common peonies are about $25, but other less common ones can be $110 (and that’s Canadian Dollar).
Girls day 💕plus plants 💚
The Duchess will be stunning! Great choice! I live in the Midwest and had no idea how much work they are for you in west! Get ready for the beauty!
The Duchess is one of the most beautifully scented peonies. Great choice!
I have 26 varieties of peonies and keep adding more (in RI). The one you purchased is lovely and has a fragrance. ❤
26 is incredible! I'm just over the border in MA. Do you deal with powdery mildew?
@@gardenandjoy hi neighbor! last year I did because it was such a wet season. This year I will spray copper fungicide once the foliage emerges for black spot and powdery mildew. I’m on IG with this name too if you want to connect there.
@Peoniesandpinks awesome copper fungicide. I tried neem oil in the past but felt I was spaying constantly!
Zone 10 gardener where it doesnt get anywhere below 35-40 F in Winter. Janey please make a video on how you ice your peony.
Janey has already. December 6, 2022.
@lindasomerville4450 Thanks I wanna go see that. Lemme go check that video out.
Hi Janey! I am so happy that the peony went in the ground right away! I was about to ask why you were collecting canned plants and not planting them😂😂😂😂
I loved this video! (As usual) 😁
I appreciate so much that you put the names and pictures of the plants on screen! 🙏
E erything looks so pretty.
Hope it does well🤞❤️
2:30 I have that yoga frog statue, my sister bought it for me for my birthday a few years ago
My favorite flower in all the world thank you for all the information I have one and yes it took 4 years for my to bloom and I'm in Georgia!!!!
Peonies are my favorite flowers. I have probably 30. They grow very well in NC. There are some in a local graveyard that are close to 100 yrs old.
I’m in NC too. What graveyard?
@@cindybaer3365 Central NC near Raleigh.
Love peonies! I have a very old variety, name unknown, growing in my garden. Love you Janey and love Eileen too! Amanda in Salem MA
Thank you, thank you! I appreciate all of the information peonies. I was not aware of the three types.
Beautiful choice! They really are everywhere here in WI and some call them “overused”. But I love them….even though mine don’t bloom much!
Good morning!!
I love peonies!! Where I live they are very rare, I might need to ask a garden center to import some!
Special great thank you!!! Just plant at November tree peony, itoh peony and herbaceous. Will see how it goes. Houston. Zone 9B
Question Janey, why not plant it in your “ shade garden” ? I love Ilene, so much great information! Peonies are definitely a favorite of mine! Your progress is something much fun to watch!
Love peonies, such beautiful flowers. I cut and bring them in with ants and all 😂
Hi Janey. Here in zone 5b in Newfoundland, Canada we plant them deep and in full sun.
I'm in zone 9 Texas, Peonies are my favorite!
I love peonies but they won’t come back next year in my zone 10 garden. I’m attempting to place them in the fridge during winter time this year.
Good morning
Now I’m worried, I planted 12 at the Community Garden in Rocklin. One of them is the Duchess
