Janey, your zig zag planter is looking STUNNING!!! We live in a valley against the north side of the rocky mountains, amending with cardboard and compost has been saving us for sure! Our soil is chock FULL of shale, iron heavy, and impossible to dig without an auger. But it's incredibly nutrient-rich, so no-dig amending for the win!

Silver bush morning glory (Convolvulus cneorum) blooms once per year from spring to early summer, at the same time as your star jasmine. The rest of the year, it's a fantastic foliage plant that can withstand the most brutal heat. I grow them in here Las Vegas, where today's high will be 117! Over time, it will develop a woody understructure and deep blue-green foliage on the older parts of the plant with metallic-silver new growth frosting the tips. Your patience will be rewarded with a truly gorgeous display next year and I can't wait to see your reaction!

Absolutely beautiful gardens. I love seeing the progress. Get a couple "barn cats" that live outside. They are great at keeping the small animals away. My cat brought us 4 gophers this spring that he caught. They keep the squirls, bunnies, mice and gophers under control without digging massive holes ruining plants trying to get at the gophers.

Regarding the compost wow, just wow! Roots and Refuge just did a similar video but hers were a comparison on four Greenstalks. The ones with old amended soil were performing superiorly to the ones with brand new bagged soil. This information is so important to me, the home gardener, and I appreciate your investment AND taking the time to show us the impact of proper amending or lack of it.

It's all filling in so beautifully! If you want to keep the look of the red fountain grass in the zig zag planter, they do have a dwarf variety out now that might work and then they don't turn into giant monsters. I found some last year and they are perfect 😗🤌

A word of CAUTION…I was taking progress photos of a Robin family, and I startled the three babies right out of the nest, probably 2 days before they were to fledge. Stunning Janey! I was so relieved the other day when you showed the gopher damage cause I had 3 plants including a lantana that basically came off clean at the dirt line and I was like how does one kill a lantana??? 😂 when I dug at the dirt underneath there was nothing. No roots. Now I’m convinced it wasn’t anything I did wrong it was a gopher! I’m glad to know it wasn’t me but they are so frustrating!

About the Gardenmeister Fuchsia, I live 10 miles west of Dallas/ Fort Worth in hot, hot, sticky, humid Texas. And when I have put plants in a spot where they are scorching because they need a little extra shade, I cover them with these black crates I have that only allow half the sun that they've been getting till I can move them to a better location and they can stabilize more. They still get the breeze and pollinators. Maybe this can will help.

Janey, your garden looks awesome! Question: have you considered eventually having the driveway next to the orchard and in front of the zig-zag planters removed? It seems like a lot of driveway and I bet it would look so much more natural and lush if you planned to remove that part eventually. I know cost is a consideration, but I also think you’re very good at thinking about long-term goals. You and Jason should be so proud of what you’ve already accomplished in less than a year! 😮

I can't believe no one's ever mentioned it but your front yard is a leech field. The big flat Rock covers your access point to your holding tank. The last thing you ever want to do is put a watering system or sprinklers on top of your leach field or any kind of plant that has long extending roots. Just trying to warn you before your back feel your septic.

    The garden is simply beautiful!
Love the zig-zag planter colors...really cool things off in the hot weather. And those heliotrope!!
But, I also love those saturated colors...blues with oranges and that lemon coral sedum...wow!!!
I wanted to suggest a plant that I love...Agastache 'Blue Boa " combines well with all colors and has fluffy violet-blue spires that bees and butterflies just love. And the foliage smells like minty root beer. And I can smell the wonderful flowers of verbena lilacina! Another nice Salvia to try is "African Sky" with sky blue flowers and fresh green leaves...new in nurseries this year (found in New Zealand!).
Hopefully, Brian and Cruickshanks will be gopher hunters!! In San Francisco, I plant everything in gopher baskets (I buy them wholesale!)
Janey, how did your bearded iris do for you earlier this year?
Also, can you plant alstroemeria in any of your half-sun areas? Or would those work better for you in containers with drip lines?
Thank you for the tour!!! Keep cool!!!

I'm growing an annual that's perfect for your "Black and White" garden - - Zulu Prince Daisy. White petals surround a black center with a narrow orange ring. I bought the seeds from Siskiyou Seeds and started them under lights in late winter. I moved the tiny seedlings to the garden nearly 2 month ago and they've been blooming ever since. Planted in full sun with sporadic water, they are surviving our nasty heat (Zone 9B, Davis CA). It would be great if they self seed, but I'll have to wait and see about that.

I live in San Diego Calif. For your front fence for street noise plant Tacoma cape honey suckle! It attracts humming birds and other birds it has a beautiful orange flower and grows extremely fast it gets at least 10ft tall or more and can be controlled easily! It’s a perfect hedge plant, great for privacy and it will be a beautiful green back drop to your garden instead of the fence it looks beautiful if you want to keep it shaped into a hedge form or it can be left Willy hilly but looks better if more formed, it’s somewhat like Esperanza but more compact, Esperanza is more lacy. I have a gopher story for you. My MIL lived in Oklahoma City in the country. She lived alone, and as her dementia got worse, she had to leave her home and be with family in another state. She used to say she heard noises in the bathroom wall, and that her bathroom wall was almost damp. The house was vacant for several months until family put it on the market to sell. The house was cleaned and empty, and ready to sell. A young man purchased the house, and before closing, he did a final walk through with the realtor, where everything was fine. He signed the papers, got the keys and went back to the house. As he walked by the bathroom, he was shocked to see a hole in the bathroom wall with dirt all over the floor. A gopher tunneled under the house, which was built on a slab. There was not concrete around the shower drain under the tub, so he came up through the space, got inside the wall, and scratched or dug his way through the drywall and into the house. The family paid for repairs to the bathroom and the buyer agreed to get rid of the gophers. It was unbelievable, that was a very strange call to get from the realtor. And the poor buyer! I promise the story is 100% true.

If you’re going to plant Oleanders , please plant on the outside of your fence, they are so poisonous to your pets. They do have beautiful flowers. Your garden looks so beautiful

Janey, we had a birds nest on our front door wreath too and a neighborhood cat jumped up and knocked it off and ate them AND we caught it all on the ring camera 😅 it was awful! 😣

When you take out your purple grass from your zigzag planter, maybe what you should be planting is some white Gara or pink Gara that will give you the nice wispy look. I wonder if that would be more of a perennial for you. Only reason I suggest that is because I have that grass you are suggesting and I am a zone five and it dries out in the summer, it looks terrible if it doesn’t get lots of water and the centres will die out or one half and you are left with a partial growth in the end. Mine are about 5-6 years old and they don’t look great. I’m thinking of pulling mine and putting something else. I guess I’m too OCD. I see your Dantis Falls and I just want to trim them back something fierce. They are becoming a carpet. That’s just my craziness going overboard. But your garden is looking beautiful. I’m like you. I like bright colours and lots of it the better it stands out the more I like it. I’ve had some bad weather lately and I really want to video my garden for you and show you my good and bad. I can do that today and send it to you. I pray I won’t be too late.

I was always turned off by the color on the tag of the Blood Sweat and Tears lilies but yours are really pretty.. I agree with you about the yarrow , very dull color and yes you need a lot more gladiolas. Your mass plantings are very impressive. A little side dress of fertilizer would probably save your strugglers until you can get the soil properly amended.

I have the garden mister plant you said maybe in the wrong spot. I am also in zone 9b central California. Mine is in only morning sun and deep shade the rest of the day. Plenty of water, but not to much because it can get powdery mildew. Mine is about 5 years old. Cut it back hard in the winter and springs back up every year. Maybe in your side yard would be best... idk.
