I hate when ginseng videos pop up, theres a nasty side and a deadly side to some of these pickers who will trespass, intimidate and kill for your natural ginseng. They do not care about giving them the proper time to regrow and its terrible,i have met very few pickers who respect property, and the land itself.

I live in Pennsylvania. I live on the very first mountain ridge going east from Pittsburgh. It's one of the largest forests within a hundred miles. It's a mix of private and public land. The private side of it logs it for timber, and they just logged an old growth section that had ginseng growing everywhere. Not only did they log it, they fucking clear cut it. It would take a thousand years for that ginseng to come back. We need to protect our old growth forests- we need new legislation that if you find such and such flora and fauna- it gains automatic protection.

It was people such as Daniel Boone who destroyed the ginseng, not the poor people of the Appalachian mountains. In his time he was one of the largest distributors of ginseng to China. He lost ships at sea with thousands of pounds on board on several occasions. Notice though its the man on the bottom that Vice points the finger at...I know many good elderly people who to this day still dig ginseng just to make ends meet...

American ginseng(Panax quinquefolius) is not the same speices as asian ginseng(Panax ginseng). Also the biggest ginseng importer is switzerland, not china. And korean ginseng is the most expensive one. Cultivated ginseng has no same value as a wild ginseng. Korea alone cultivate 2,630 tons of ginseng every year.

ginseng takes forever to grow, 3 year-old ginseng can just be about 2 inches long, which is still tiny, so you have to have some real patience to grow ginseng. Its why the Asians cultivate them too but cant satisfy demand. Also wild ginseng is more highly valued for the same reason wild chicken is valued.

How do I know we'll its not exactly hard to know where it grows and I've also been picking it since I was about 13 years old! Since I could leave my house and spend the night in the woods with friends and or by myself. Now I take my daughter looking for ginsing! Mature plants are far and few between, but they are still here! If I could buy seeds I would plant everywhere and in 20 years my area would be a gold mine! I would plant the seeds for anyone to find not just myself!
