I hate when ginseng videos pop up, theres a nasty side and a deadly side to some of these pickers who will trespass, intimidate and kill for your natural ginseng. They do not care about giving them the proper time to regrow and its terrible,i have met very few pickers who respect property, and the land itself.
I live in Pennsylvania. I live on the very first mountain ridge going east from Pittsburgh. It's one of the largest forests within a hundred miles. It's a mix of private and public land. The private side of it logs it for timber, and they just logged an old growth section that had ginseng growing everywhere. Not only did they log it, they fucking clear cut it. It would take a thousand years for that ginseng to come back. We need to protect our old growth forests- we need new legislation that if you find such and such flora and fauna- it gains automatic protection.
There is a law now, it’s illegal to disrupt it, but who will say anything? It’s the land surveyors or land inspectors job to see it before destroying it
@@susdad Yes, that's a problem. Though, we actually ran into the surveyor on the land in question. That's actually who told us about the ginseng. This was maybe 10 years ago though.
Where are you from? Latrobe? Mount pleasant, connellsville? First mountain range east of Pittsburgh. You have yourself some competition that's for sure!
Thats how we do it in new york. Law mandates us to to plant berries within 50ft of the patch where it was found. Everyone should do that so we can teach our kin how to do it the right way
My grandfather was growing his own in a special garden he made. Some how he replicated the growing conditions. I was little but I remember I couldn't play around his "garden" lol
It was people such as Daniel Boone who destroyed the ginseng, not the poor people of the Appalachian mountains. In his time he was one of the largest distributors of ginseng to China. He lost ships at sea with thousands of pounds on board on several occasions. Notice though its the man on the bottom that Vice points the finger at...I know many good elderly people who to this day still dig ginseng just to make ends meet...
I have a bunch of ginseng growing under two spruce trees. They are thriving. I didn't know anything about the market for it, nor did I know that people were harvesting it like this. I just thought they were annoying weeds. Now that I know they are endangered, I am going to just leave them alone.
That's the same trick gold plays on people. It sounds great that so little pays so much, but part of that high cost is that it takes a lot of work to get it. It they could do it easily and cheap, the prices would go down. Rarely a quick buck.
Ham,I personally don’t know about gensing but I’m interested in lots of plants..I have been watching about this plant..n I think I saw this plant in swiss..not many part but before where I was living in the refugee camp..the forest is moist all the time..
American ginseng(Panax quinquefolius) is not the same speices as asian ginseng(Panax ginseng). Also the biggest ginseng importer is switzerland, not china. And korean ginseng is the most expensive one. Cultivated ginseng has no same value as a wild ginseng. Korea alone cultivate 2,630 tons of ginseng every year.
Lol the word 'Ginseng' itself is wrong. No asian country calls the plant as 'ginseng'. It's either Renshen(chinese), Insam(korean) or Ninjin(japanese).
ginseng takes forever to grow, 3 year-old ginseng can just be about 2 inches long, which is still tiny, so you have to have some real patience to grow ginseng. Its why the Asians cultivate them too but cant satisfy demand. Also wild ginseng is more highly valued for the same reason wild chicken is valued.
Grows too fast. Needs be slow. Wildcrafted form is indistinguishable to wild. Simulated is pretty close too. Eluthra (siberian "ginseng") is about as good as ginseng too.
Can you buy seeds? I know thousands of acres here in Pennsylvania that will sustain ginsing. How do I know we'll its not exactly hard to know where it grows and I've also been picking it since I was about 13 years old! Since I could leave my house and spend the night in the woods with friends and or by myself. Now I take my daughter looking for ginsing! Mature plants are far and few between, but they are still here! If I could buy seeds I would plant everywhere and in 20 years my area would be a gold mine! I would plant the seeds for anyone to find not just myself!
Damn no wonder I can't ever find this medicine, my great grandpa used this to cure strokes on people. Those ginseng come in families if you look at them male female and children plus the way they are used
U need u a real poacher,I got a gang of hooligans who will live out there on jerky and raw oatmeal and peanut butter, and water .I've put em on a hunt that lasted 47days straight,I went in and made contact one time to redirect the hunt on a tip.but in all in 47 days they found112 dry pounds.
Please guys stop buying from Walmart as most of them are not authentic. They are mass produced. If you’ve been to Korea and had ginseng, you’ll feel the difference in what you get here in USA. There are only a few dealers on Amazon who are authentic and curewithearth.com is the one I tried last time and they are superb. They get the ginseng directly from the farmlands.
I was one of the idiots that thought I could do it without learning. I had no idea there was a season. I only pulled one and bragged that I found one.I quickly got told you have to respect it like I respect everything else. I didn't know I could kill them off over being careless. I haven't went yet. I'm going to try this season coming. I wanted to learn. Plus my full time job I had was hell. I was trying to find out if it grows on certain sides of the mountains? If it grows higher up or lower? I found that one lower down. We were 4wheeler driving and practice shooting. Odd combo lol
yeah but like... has it been proven to actually do anything? I know they say it's a traditional Chinese medicine but has it got any medicinal properties? in traditional Chinese medicine mercury was also considered a medicine too
Are they bullshitting? I just checked Canadian ginseng price and the most per Kilogram is $75. And these guys selling them for more than $1000 a pound? Wow!

It’s important to keep ginseng a secret so let’s make a video about it and talk about how lucrative it is so more people will just go dig up the woods
Its nice how much they truly care isn't it
so weird
I like when he said he wont shoot anyone over the roots. Very nice very touching indeed.
I’m from Nc and hunted sang since I was 8 years old going on 40 now it never gets old

Ginseng coffee will create a large market for this plant.
For some reason the *Ginseng makes coffee* to taste more mild and sweet.
THEY ALL LOOKS SO YOUNGISH AND HEALTHY!
This is the type of globalization nations can both benefit from in trade. These people really enjoy their jobs!
Won't last if they over harvest, though.
wouldnt you enjoy it too, walking thru the woods destroying local fauna for cash
Harvesting ginseng under globalization would be ecological suicide
tolbiac not if you are smart about it, one could have said the same about the truffle industry a few decades ago.
A Better Tomorrow I think they want to push people out and monopolize it.
These guys act like we're moonshining around here when they find good spots the way they keep the spots so secret 😂
Good stuff Vice. I like it when you do actual news stories. Keep it up.
This herb is so good I once interrupted my friend who was talking about his dead son to pick some up.
Less about ginseng and more about the people your friend hangs out with, tbh.
Wouldn't think planting it under pine trees like that guy did would work very well, almost never find wild sang under pines.
Pine would killI think. Pine sap and Resin not good to eat.

Ginseng can wake up a person on the death bed to leave his last words.
Doesn't Monster Energy Drink and Red Bull etc have Ginseng in them?
yes and no. No because they use Panax ginseng which comes from Korea, China, Siberia, Vietnam, and Japan not America.

We should sell the berries to asia.
Why not buy acres legally and grow them.

they value the woods grown, it takes years for ginseng to grow, and in that time, your field of seng would be wiped out by man or nature
Work on a ginseng farm in Canada, can confirm it takes years to mature, we harvest at year 4, 5 if we get lucky.
