The Last One (PBS Special with Popcorn Sutton / 2022 remaster)

- Опубліковано 28 вер 2024
- The Last One is the Emmy award-winning PBS television special on moonshine in Appalachia, featuring Popcorn Sutton and JB Rader, who were relatively unknown outside of Maggie Valley at the time of filming. The film relies on source footage that was also used for the cult classic This is the Last Dam Run of Likker I'll Ever Make. Both films were produced by Neal Hutcheson (also camera and editing), while the original concept for the project was created by Popcorn Sutton. The similar titles have caused a lot of confusion ever since.
The primary filming was done in June 2002. Hutcheson gave "The Last Run" to Sutton to sell on VHS copies in the fall of that year and produced his own documentary version for film festivals, where it failed to attract any interest whatsoever. He then produced a new version for television, adding interviews and illustrations for greater context. It first appeared on SCETV in South Carolina in November 2008, then on UNCTV in North Carolina in early 2009, after which it was distributed to PBS markets around the United States and remained an audience favorite for many years.
* The Last One was originally letterboxed to a 16x9 image. It is here remastered to the full frame of the source material.
Prior to the release of the Last One, Sutton had fallen on hard times with a high-profile arrest in 2007 following a fire at his still house in East Tennessee, and another high-profile arrest in 2008 as the result of a sting operation. By the time The Last One was gaining traction and introducing large television audiences to the affable moonshiner, Sutton had taken his own life-following years of declining health-in order to remain free from prison. Sutton and Hutcheson had remained close after the filming of The Last One and Hutcheson sporadically documented Sutton's activities over the years up to 2009, which resulted in a second film "Popcorn Sutton-A Hell of a Life" (2014). "A Hell of a Life" arguably regards Sutton more as an individual whereas "The Last One" presents him as an icon, emblematic of Appalachian culture. However, as Hutcheson acknowledges, Sutton's personality transcended any of the filmmaker's designs. For the full story, see Hutcheson's book, The Moonshiner Popcorn Sutton (2021).

Popcorn reminds me of my Grandpa. I love listening to his adventures in his life's journey. I always loved listening to my Grandpa when I was just a kid. My grandpa made moonshine and would hunt ginseng in the hills of West Virginia. He rolled his own cigarettes with Prince Albert tobacco from a can. I'm now 62 yo myself and am so Blessed to have the memories of my grandparents and my parents. They survived life by working hard and playing hard. I'm also Blessed that they instilled their morals and values in me and I passed them on to my children. I have pics of all my grandparents and of 1 of my great grandma. I have 1 son who was truly interested in his family history, his father had no real documentation of his family (they immigrated here from Ireland) but he does have the pics of his grandparents, great grand parents and his great great grandmother on my side. They were Native American (Cherokee). This is an awesome documentary of real life history versus the BS hollywood puts out. BTW .... Lester Flatt, Earl Scruggs and Carter and Ralph Stanley used to play music with my Uncle Buddy at my Grandma and Grandpas when I was just a small kid. My Uncle was Buddy Moore he used to sing and play with Ralph after Carter died. Memories are really all we have in life that can never be taken away by anyone ♥

@@AliciaAmun I don't think he had his operation set up behind his shop, they usually use land that isn't owned by them so they don't face prosecution when caught. My pops recently passed in March, so I don't have many other stories unfortunately. Next time I'm visiting my mom near Asheville I'll ask her about him. Oh wait, I do remember one time we were standing out front of his shop and a semi truck that was driving way too fast on these windy 2 lane roads. Well, when were talking, someone said he's probably gonna end up hitting the side of the mountain at those speeds and I swear on my pops. When we left we drove up the road about 2 miles and sure enough the semi was head on into the mountain side. It was the first time I ever saw a bad accident where the driver was just sitting with his door open and he was just sitting in the driver's seat facing the road with his feet and legs out and he had blood all over his face and front windshield was shattered. Man, thanks for being interested in my stories, it's very humbling, I think I only visited the shop twice, because my parents were trying to be slick and hide the fact they were getting twisted when we were on vacation. If you want, go on here youtube and check out the video of Johnny Knoxville when he befriended Popcorn. I think he gives a tour to Johnny and you can see some of his property, I do believe they go to where he had his operation. It was 94 the last time I ever got to meet Popcorn, but he left a forever lasting impression because he was such an odd but funny character. The best way to describe him would be like he was a cartoon character. I think he was so closed off from the outside world that's why he didn't think twice about showing my dad and I at age 11 his adult sex lair! I wish I could talk to my pops one more time, he was a very hard working Englishman that taught me everything I know about life. 😢Thanks guys for appreciating some of the stories. Hey, this is my grandpas background for many years. course it was before I was born, but the story's were great. I'm in my late 70s, but I still remember. Grandpa spent time in prison. Once for chopping of a a knee cap of a nosey man. Set up again after he got out, lasted a long time. Once they came to him said we know your still making. My grandpa was getting older and tired. He pointed at a pine grove on the high mountain, and said that's where it is. the man just laughed said yea ok. well that's where it was. After the men left, Grandpa went up on the mountain broke it down did away with all of it. Never mooned again. this is one story of many. Great memories. Watching this brings it all back.

Thanks for posting this re-mastered video, Neal. The quality is great, and there's some footage in there I don't recall seeing before. Always interesting to hear how it was done down your way. Moonshine making was pretty common up in northern Alberta & northern Saskatchean in Canada, right up until the outbreak of WWII. It was all pretty much small-scale local stuff, as far as I know. One of the main reasons for it was that the Provincial governments in both Provinces held a monopoly on the sale of spirits. However, in may places in those northern areas, there wasn't a "government store" within 2-300 miles; roads were pretty poor and not many of them. I'm sure there are a lot of families farming up there still whose parents or grandparents had a hand in running off a batch from time to time. It never got any attention in the press and very little from the Mounties, so it's not well documented, except in family journals & such. Anyway, thanks for posting this new re-master.

Moonshine is still made in Saudi Arabia where of course any Liquor is illegal. However, the Authorities turn a blind eye to Westerners making their own "Sidiqui" (friend in the bottle) as long as you don't sell it. Potato mash is made into pure spirit and then cut by 5 (5 parts water to one part Sid) to make it just over whisky strength. There are no side effects like hangover as it is totally pure alcohol. The Ladies of the house make their own wine using bottles of grape juice from the local shop and tip it into a big plastic dustbin then add yeast and some water. The natural sugar in the grape juice is enough to cause fermentation to produce a dry wine. Adding some sugar in the per-fermentation part makes a slightly sweeter and stronger wine but it takes a little longer to finish the process. Cheers!

Way he walked, talked, joked round, the overalls , the hat, the reputation for making the shine round, getting ratted out and doing his time without telling on nobody else. I've heard "make your tongue beat your brains out" and a couple of other sayings that weren't exactly the same but damn near. Grandaddy been dead 30 yrs and on the rare occasion I get out and socialize if there's any oldtimers there I'm probably going to hear bout how good his shine was followed by a crazy story. Black or white everybody seemed to like and admire him. Except the police.lol. his Grandaddy was from the mountains but not sure which state. Never met my other Grandaddy. He was a moonshine runner in South Carolina and got killed in a running gunfight with the law. I been locked up in 6 counties but never stole been to prison but never hurt nobody that didn't beg for it lied to the police but never lied to my wife. Never hit someone smaller than me but never lost a fight. Stubborn as hell with a smart mouth. So are my brothers and cousins but I guess we got it honest.
You seem to be quite a storyteller yourself, sir! I really enjoyed your comment.
@James Sutton : MUCH Love & respect for your great comment. Kind'a feel the Holy smells of true American traditions, Human Rights, Freedom, etc., versus crooked 'govts' officials...
May the Lord Bless Popcorn & family, as well as ALL the ppl from the mountains!!..

What a wonderful fellow and a great story. My grandfather made Chili Wine up until he died 20 odd years ago in coastal NSW Australia. It looked like almost clear like metho and had a 'belt' to it like nothing else. My best mate made Wheat Wine in the Central Tablelands of NSW Australia. It was pretty much clear as water, it also had a big 'belt to it. We were both "Shearers" back in those days and drank the Wheat Wine at the Cut Out parties at the completion of the Sheep Shearing on his various family members farms. Watchin this wonderf story makes me miss my old grandfather, who was a real Australian aboriginal "Bushman" and "Brumby Runner". I guess that the various "clear wines" all may well have been similar to the American Moonshine. Love the music and singing - I wish we had that type here in Australia.
Never heard a story like that. Love knowing that moonshining is a global thing.
And funny that “brumby running” is almost identical to the American “rum running”.
@@zlinedavid "Brumby Running" is actually catching wild horses in the bush of Australia. During the 2nd world war a lot of the "Brumby's" caught in Australia were put into "Bully Beef" cans for the meat supplement for the soldiers fighting in the war. I believe Australian "Brumby's" are the equivalent of the wild "Mustang" in America.
My grandfather was also a "Timber Cutter" carting timber from the bush, for railway sleepers and building lumber. He and my mum's people lived out in the scrub in tents for most of their lives. When my sister and I were born in the 1960's my grandfather built his first house out of the timber he was cutting from the bush. I have refurbished the original "claw foot" cast iron bathtub from that house into my home in 2005, some of the family including great great grandchildren bath in that bath when they visit our home. That bath is the starter of many stories of adventure of their ancestor that the family share and pass on to the new generations.
This edit is really good, several things that weren't in even the long edit. Thank you for that.
I used to cook whiskey at the end of the last century. I had a smaller pot and ran smaller batches, infusing different flavors. It was unique in my area at the time. I'm amazed when I visit the moonshine section of the liquor store and see the different flavors available. The only ingredients I used were peach, apple, and peppermint. I never imagined apple pie and dill pickle flavor would be a thing. I'm 61 and the last member of my family to cook whiskey. I still make elderberry wine and the infrequent batch of beer. Hard work, but very rewarding...
What a fantastic slice of the good old ways! Thanks for sharing this amazing content
I'll watch and listen to old school legendary outlaws anytime. So much knowledge to soak up
When I was in kindergarten I had a project for school and we didn't have glue and used rice to stick the pieces together. It is so good to remember that because of watching when they made the paste
He's simple folk, leave them alone. Some folks in the mountains still live the simple life and just want to be left alone. City folks just don't understand anything about just leave me alone and mind your own business!!!
I was on vacation in Gatlinburg Tennessee and had a guy take me on some trails in the hills. He told me about how his great grandpa made shine in there and just blew my mind. It's amazing the way things were back then. I really love hearing about the history of it all.
There are so many good stories left out of this version. Popcorn telling the story where he took his mother's lipstick to a cat's asshole is gold. Making himself a pot of beans right on the still.... using the overflow from the worm to wash some dishes. Man was and still is a legend.
@happy. Where is the uncut: eraion..

That mans laugh brought a smile to my face every time.
Popcorn is a legend and was a well liked man in his town okay.
Popcorn is an American treasure. His knowledge is gold.
I remember watching this the summer of 2008 on the documentary channel and thought it was one of the best films. If I remember correctly either his wife or daughter was able to create a legal distillery with Popcorn’s name on it
What an artform.... This should not end up as being past tense!
VERY well done docu, thank you so much
I found these videos and truly love them. The land, and people are beautiful, wonderfully peaceful to live completely off of the land and with a lot of freedom. Thank you for doing these amazing documentaries. My great grandparents were moonshiners as well. I have a great old picture of them standing next to the still in the prairies. Part of my heritage as well! Keep up the great work and please do more great documentaries!✌❤👌🙏
We are lucky to live in North Carolina
I was fortunately enough to enjoy some of popcorns shine 30 years ago near Knoxville.. Excellent !
Superb. My sister introduced me to a couple of guys who made their own for friends and family. That was at least 40 years ago in the hills near Dahlonega. They gave me a shot out of a jar set in "the crick to cool". Had a punch like a hammer. What a thrill.
I have never understood why the law messes with these good people, they aren't hurting anyone, seems to be they are just living life on their own terms, and providing for their families, just like anyone else. Popcorn Sutton, to me is a good, honest and decent man.
ALWAYS A TWINKLE IN HIS EYE..... A GREAT SMILE & A STORY TO SHARE.
MY KIND OF FOLK
Man this brings back good memories miss talking to him at the store in Maggie valley great stories about his adventures a man that always said what he had on his mind and didn't care about your feelings I learned cuss words that I didn't know rest easy my friend.
I love him as well as you.
God bless
There are still folks out here keeping the tradition alive.
Was he in Western NC?
Yes. Born and raised in the most beautiful area of Maggie Valley, NC. Later on, he moved to TN.
All my people (ancestors) are from Kentucky. I was born in 1957 and every spring we went to my Grreat Grandma's where she owned multiple properties and acreage, we'd sift through bottles in good shape, the women washed and steamed them clean whilst the men gathered around two or three stills. Food was aplenty, made homemade taffy and is one of my most heartfelt favorites. One year we put whole peaches in Mason jars and labeled them ourselves. Up until the 80s then I moved to Texas for work. You may think he's the last but I doubt it.
Na, he ain't THE last. Thank God Almighty for the hills
I absolutely love Popcorn Sutton and his family!
Wished I grew up around these beautiful people 😔

I can proof by eye, like them, took me 2 yrs.

NOPE. May the politicians burn in HELL for all eternity to come. Joe, nancy....your time is almost up!
Yup! The Fed Gov. has to get their piece of the pie. They can't just leave simple country folks alone!
Damn right hell with them
Absolutely brother. I agree.
It goes on 1 generation to another, as a Native Eskimo from Alaska our Elders told us stories to let us understand the land and earth and how to live in it
That man has more joy and life in him than any person his age I've ever seen. He and people like him are the last of what America used to be when it came to freedom and common sense.
