Derwood....what an underrated guitarist....absolutely one of my fave guitarists of all time...this is great...Valley Of The Dolls guitar parts are even better....!!!...Mark Laff also incredible....used to see him play with Twenty Flight Rockers....
I used to go to those 20FR gigs too, they were good...although obviously another attempt by Bernie Rhodes to put together another identikit Punky boyband like he did with the Clash.
IMO Generation X was an excellent band! Each member had superb talent alone then together they were brilliant! As for all the lame comments complaining about his hair or lip synching or they weren't punk bla bla bla. It was the 70s & lip syncing was Rules of TOTP. They were definitely post punk rock, they just took it to a new & different level as Billy said punk lacked emotion among other things so he gave it that! The fact that every member of that band went on to have their own sucess in different endeavors says something. Billy is still rockin & touring right now, 40 yrs after TOTP. SO........

Thanks for that. I was watching and listening and thinking this reminds me of something. The drum beat, Billy's, look to camera and the wailing voice. You're spot on.
When I read John Lydon's autobiography, what surprised me about Billy Idol is that he is actually good friends with Lydon to this day. I always saw him as this "hanger on" who rode the fame of The Sex Pistols to become famous himself. But it's not the case at all. He was part of the Sex Pistol's entourage in 1976 and 1977 because he was friends with Lydon/Vicious, and they remained friends. And Lydon was very happy when Billy went on to have his own success - they used to attend eachother's shows, in the 1980s
Saw Generation X the time this was in the charts...great track and deserves more recognition..I loved Valley of the dolls LP..for me..this is Billy Idol !
I'm so sick of people arguing and calling each other posers and shit. Just shut the fuck up and enjoy the music. There are no posers, there are just individuals who are at different varying levels of falling in love with something. Get over yourselves. You can own everything a band ever did, but you still don't own the band or their music. You don't get to decide who is a "real" fan and who's a poser.
loved them. was something about that album that just made sense to me and it clicked. back when punk was really just good rock. like the clash. to me punk was minor threat or dead Kennedys. Genx was just great solid rock n roll
The thing that's so humorous at least to me is how totally perfect his voice and the music are, even though they look like Stewart Copeland's nightmare.
Billy's been a bottle blonde for a loooong time! And I'm starting to think he was born with that lip curling sneer, lol. Imaging his father with others, standing before the glass looking at the newborns in the hospital. "Which one is yours, bloke?" "The one sneering, yelling, and raising his fist."
Liverpool Johnny rocks out round Paul's place... Quarry street kids take Hamburg.... took me years to realise the rocker fighting Elvis was John Lennon!
Holy cow, reading this 11 years later I realize he's now 66, & still recording and performing and touring!! 💪 I can only hope to be as vital as Idol at that age. Go, man, go! 🤘
Although he was one of the legendary Bromley Contingent, Billy Idol did not appear on the 'Today' programme with the Sex Pistols when they did the Bill Grundy interview, the fans present were Steve Severin, Souixsie Souix, Simone Thomas and Simon Barker.
Even at this early stage on his career he was a fucking natural Frontman.
What s great record. My wife and I wore this one out when we were kids. She has "Ready Steady Go" as her ringtone for me and the kids now.

Full respect to that punk rocker in the audience trying to keep it real with the pogo👍
We weren't allowed into Top of The Pops. You were vetted - no true punks allowed; too risky.
First punk record I listened to. I was about 8 years old. Never heard of Sex Pistols. They were the gateway drug.
Me to then UK subs angelic upstarts
Well, yes, when you're an 8 yr old 🙄
I first heard Gw
Generation X at 16 years old. Wow!
Something about this always reminds me of Adam and the Ants before their time. Even got it's very own rap.
Agreed! Its got a very "Dirk Wears White Sox" sound to it.
seventiesmusicisbest Maybe ant was inspired?
Adam Ant was punk first😉🥰
Thanks for that. I was watching and listening and thinking this reminds me of something. The drum beat, Billy's, look to camera and the wailing voice.
You're spot on.
I can hear Adam Ant in his voice and phrasing.
So highly underrated.
This song is just plain tight.
¨Go Johnny go use your electric...while he had the cutest smile on his face!
Crazy man crazy;D
Hannah Pingi looks like Brad Pitt
used to sing this at Abec 1979 to phil rocker no1 and phil rocker no 2, some of the best memories
Billy rocked it even in the late 70s

And in Billy's book he talks about how much he respected and admired Siouxsie Sioux, none of the usual I slept with her or wanted to stuff.
@@monicawood9942 He's not exactly known for just respecting and admiring women.
@@alukuhito Yet here he is, respecting and admiring Siouxsie Sioux.
@@jenny2tone242 Yet he's still been an asshole to women.
@@alukuhito Didn't say he hasn't. How much of that behaviour was his personality and how much was the drugs though 🤷🏻♀️
Love Generation X
Awesome Billy Idol, greatness right there.
Outstanding that he was in the Biz for so long
He still is.
David Bowie hairstyle....and rap in there too ....better than I remembered
he's so cute, was so funny but interpretation and voice is verry good! great billy idol
Beautiful💋😎💖💦
Top tune
Derwood Andrews and Danny Kustow - best guitarists of the punk/new wave era.
@@gmantramp404
Not necessarily technically, but different yes.
@@yassassin6425 definitely as good as imo. McGeoch was very versatile with a guitar. Better was a wrong choice of word as it's demeaning in a sense 👍👍

Sure you did... That would mean you're probably 60+ years old, meaning you don't know what the internet is. Explain that!

everytime he looks into the camera, i die a little! ^.^
Love Billys hair at this time,it was like a cross between a raggedy Ziggy Stardust and an outgrown Mac Curtis Flat-Top Rockabilly cut.
Teddy boy mullet
The Valley Of The Dolls album was an absolute monster! It might have arrived too soon and it deserved a much higher chart position. Give it a listen.
VOTD album was almost the end for the band as they pursued a Mott the Hoople direction.
loved them. was something about that album that just made sense to me and it clicked. back when punk was really just good rock. like the clash. to me punk was minor threat or dead Kennedys. Genx was just great solid rock n roll
@@flipnap2112 I always thought Kiss me Deadly was their best album ask it gave us Dancing with myself.
@@VincentRE79 kiss me deadly was amazing
@@flipnap2112 Agree but it came out too late in the band's career.
Came from an absolutely fucking stunning LP.
You are so right!..and 'Running with the boss sound' was my standout track.. LP was great from start to finish
Happy birthday Sir Billy!

This is The Music
the info table on the video is incorrect. i think he moved to NY after gen x and not LA.
Wow, punk rock when it had basslines!
an ass line
This was 3 years after punk. More rockabilly influenced in 1979.
Best Punk is all the bass. If you listen closely enough to go deaf!
ya gotta luv that hair!
Excelente.
Love the way the video starts

this is gayer than fuk
Totally channelling Elvis Presley.
He wasn't on the Bill Grundy Show when The Sex Pistols were interviewed.
It's a big mistake...
Rest of Bromley contingent were (siouxsie, etc)
Had he dyed his hair and become a punk by then,or had was he still thinking about it.?
Ez nagyon tetszik!!!!
could he be any nicer looking?
Yes there is the haircut problem haha
Lustbutler - that hairstyle wasn't unusual in 78. Billy still looked good no matter the hair
Fucking gorgeous 🖤
Izzy _ Bowie style 😉
He looks like my lesbian gym teacher from the early 90s
Definitely not live.
Still fun to watch.
