  • This video shows what I have in my altoids fire starter tin. I have multiple fire sources as well as tinder. This kit would be a great addition to any camp kit, bugout bag, SHTF bag, or hiking gear. THis allows you to start a fire in pretty much any weather condition.

Dip the heads of the matches in clear fingernail polish to make them waterproof and prevent the material on the match heads from flaking off over time. Add a couple of alcohol prep pads in the bottom of the tin. Excellent fire starters and take up almost no room. Add a flat plastic fresnel lens in the bottom of the tin. Takes up almost no space. Add a couple of guitar picks, take up minimal space and are excellent tinder.

3:16 Razor blade. Replacing this with something like a Stanley cutter blade would be more durable. It's also quite easy to improvise a knife from a Stanley blade.
3:44 I recently saw a guy pack this cotton/jelly stuff into 3 cm pieces of drinking straw, then sealing off the ends with a jet lighter while crimping the end with a Leatherman pliers. One straw tinder like this will burn for several minutes and they are small, and waterproof. I was impressed!
4:38 The wetfire looks a bit bulky for that tin. I'd put in a tea light or two.
7:30 I like that magnesium block fire starter! Great idea in very little space.
One thing I learned in my scouts days is to never be without a school plastic pencil sharpener! With it one can shave masses of very fine shavings from twigs, or wood dowels cut from bigger sticks or wood cores. Very easy to ignite.
    Thanks for a great video.
Note: why does everyone always use an Altoids tin? A tin maybe 1cm longer and wider, and a bit deeper, won't be any harder to carry/pack and would double its versatility! One could even use a Tupperware container of just about any shape/size that suits, and they are nearly indestructible! And waterproof, without all the tape around it!
I would probably keep all the separate gear in separate Tupperware containers in the pack, or cargo pants pockets. What do you think?

Where did you see the straw /cotton jelly one ? I'd like to check that out I'm making my own survival fire start kit and would like to add these into it they sound good. Some good tips I've took from this comment I wouldn't have thought of I'm going to add in the guitar pick and magnifying glass and try out the clear nail polish tip also for the matches 👍 some good tips thanks.

Is that magnesium block one of the made in china ones? Because they suck, I've tried them. I forget the brand that makes a good one, I'll have to look in my kit. I would just put a thick regular ferro rod in and that would free up space for a small lighter.
Edit: Doan mach & equip co. Was the brand for the good one.

@bassp 2005 oui les magnésium block from China are no good . Here in Quebec they are Well under the Coleman name but under Goldman China is write.
For the other one the good one mine is from USA write in a canoë with oar
" CAMP" . One way to distinct them is tu the rod the Chinese one you can see that the glue is not put cleanly contrary at the good one.
I wonder if we can scratch a bit of magnésium and put this powder in a empty pill capsule to use it later. Or if there is another way To keep that magnésium powder.
Sorry for my English I am from Quebec and speak French so I do mistake in English
