    Glad to see you again! Great video as always! I have never been a fan nor saw the point of mini kits or Altoids kits. However, after discovering your channel, I see them as totally viable stealth option or back-up to ones main kit. While I've never made any out and out survival kits using your tins, I have adopted the philosophy other ways- colds and flus tend to hit me hard and fast, and almost always when I'm at work or otherwise out. If you'v ever tried to move a mattress or a computer tower in the middle of a scorching hot day when you've got a fever, a raging sore throat and a throbbing headache, you'll know it's not fun. So I threw together a little EDC medtin with enough medicine, strepsils and multivitamins to keep me as happy as possible until I can get home to a bed. While the kit's probably not terribly helpful for corona, it's definitely saved the day from less nasty bugs a few times already.

      @@edwardfletcher7790 I don't even have that car anymore but even if I did, just knowing the key pin pattern doesn't tell you the internal RFID chip code it holds for the starter/ignition lock/immobilizer so at best it would only be useful to break in and steal my cheap factory radio. Plus wouldn't you need to know things like my name, address, what color Civic I drive, and what street I'm parked on? This theft technology, called "key teleduplication", is essentially an internet paranoid myth based on fictional TV show episodes. It is not that the technology doesn't exist; its that not a single incident of an actual car break-in using key teleduplication has ever occurred. Slim jims, tennis ball popping VW locks, door bending, coat hangers, smashing the window with ninja rocks, etc. works right in any crook's own backyard and they don't have to buy an airliner ticket for hundreds of dollars to travel across country to where I live, not that they even know my name/address/car color in the first place.

    You should probably mark the amount the water tab disinfects on your water bag to take some of the guess work out of treating the water.
    That could be done by filling a second water bag with the amount of water the tablet is intended for and making a mark at that level, then straighten that bag out again and lay a fresh one over it so you can transfer the fill line through.
    Also, I´d imagine you´d massively buff your fire lighting capabilities with adding some sort of flame extender to the kit.
    A birthday candle would already be a convenient source of light and warmth in itself, but for fire lighting something like a piece of waxed toilet paper roll/cotton canvas would be more usable, as they both can be fluffed up and ignited with just a ferro rod.
    Some signalling items beyond the mirror and the ability to light fire might be useful as well.
    TOPS and some other brands make very flat multi-tone whistles (more difficult to overhear between background noises like wind/ rain/ running water) that you could store on the outside of the kit under the paracord wrap, with the business end uncovered so that they´re usable without having to open the kit.
    Another possibility would be a white LED (with intact long legs!) and two CR 2032 batteries. You can store them as components to save space, and when you need light you can assemble them into a light source with a strip of tape: either all around with both batteries between the legs of the LED so it shines constantly, or leave a space to bend one leg up so that it can act as a momentary switch.
    Reflecting that lamp off your unfolded space blanket will increase its visibilty as a signal, but you can also reflect it from the folded up space blanket if you want to see better with it, e.g. by stuffing it back into the container in front of the space blanket.
    You could also put the lamp assembly inside the container with some kind of opalescent material (the water bag or some tissue paper) around it to get more of a lantern that will also be seen better from all directions. If you tie that to the end of a string you should get a "buzz saw" that´s more visible than one you´d make with even a full size glow stick, and it adds movement to make it just that more visible.

    rewatched again. I really love this video and concept. BTW the glow stick gives you another C -- Candling - if I am not mistaken. and my prior comment about duct tape. I think it is one of the next 5 C's in canterbury system. So this kit is at list a 7 C kit. ... but you actually have another C also ... when you magnitize the needle you have Compass. So we are at 8 C's. Another see is Cloth Sail Needle. You do have a needle, bu it is small ... but the kit is lite. sooo I would give you another of C. so now we have 9 C. So can we get to 10 ... we can if you carry a cloth bandana on your person. So I think this is actually a 10 C Kit.
    You should do an updated video and call it 10C lite.

      Thanks. During my experimentation phase I tried tightly wrapping a bandana around the exterior but decided it looked funny. Ultimately I decided the bandana and even actually the paracord should travel separately. They can be tethered all together to make it all "one" thing you stuff in your pocket or bag, but putting all the layers on the exterior makes it hard to get to the interior quickly and easily and a survival kit should not be that way. A survival kit may be needed in an emergency situation which is dark, wet, cold, and one of your hands may be broken from the, say, plane/car crash you just experienced hence the need for the kit. The contents should ideally be easily accessible even under such adverse conditions.

    • @MeZillch
      @MeZillch  3 роки тому

      Thanks. Although slightly bulkier, I now prefer Oven Roaster Turkey Bags used to cook turkeys. They can accept boiling water temperatures whereas produce bags I assume would melt.
      Careful with those wire saws. They get finger burning hot in use. Also they can bind, especially when used wrapped around a branch being sawed, so instead it is best to keep them taut in a straight line in use. Building a bow saw from one using a small sapling with deep notched sawed into the ends is often recommend to keep the wire in the desirably straight line; it is mentioned in several survival manuals I've read.

    A few thoughts: spectra 100 lb test fishing line superior to dental floss - superior strength/low weight/size. Water purification tablets not requiring boiling water. Chemical heaters - Thermacare has a 16 hr heater you can cut-up for numerous body locations to provide warmth. Triple antibiotic stored in 1" cosmetic container. Why no flashlight? Alcohol and bug spray stored in small cylindrical spray containers. I fold a PET 20 oz container w/cap for water. A plastic bag is easily punctured but useful if of sufficient size for numerous purposes. A real compass is far better than spending time magnetizing a needle, putting it on a leaf, placing it on a body of water and hoping to know where north/south are located. I have a few wrist band types that I mod. to achieve an even smaller device. What your tins do not support is a water resistant/proof breathable heat reflective bivy and tarp. Using your space blanket for a tarp is insufficient for practical coverage to prevent wind, cold wind, rain, snow and land/air critter penetration. If you hike in pine or spruce tree terrain, set it up under the tree. In a forested section no wind, minor snow and rain penetrates. It is also absolutely silent and the best place to camp. Otherwise, depending on the temperature you may need a hefty fire to keep you warm in cool/cold climates. But you won't get much sleep due to the need to tend the fire through the night. Unfortunately, those tins do not support a sufficient number of items and of size needed for survival. No disrespect however as you did a your best at the challenge.

    Thanks for your video. About $280 for a personal locator beacon so you don't have to crawl for 8 hours with a broken ankle/leg? Sounds like a pretty good deal to me. Also, the older I get, the more inclined I am to reduce my kit to the absolute minimum. So, I only carry the bare essentials ("bare" is highly subjective, of course): contractor garbage bag, ziplocks with water purification tabs, full Scripto lighter, a couple KIND bars, and my current pocket knife and Surefire Sidekick pocketlight. Less than a pound and fits in a pants pocket. A few really solid 100% reliable and useful items in a ziplock bag that will get me through almost any emergency and are easy to deploy. Oh, and a PLB. ;-) And finally, I'm assuming you already discovered that cheaper mylar reflectorized "survival" blankets are almost worthless in a breeze because they shred very quickly. Everyone considering using one to save their lives should thoroughly test them first.

    Y'know, the space blanket thing makes wonder, how much fabric one could squeeze into an Altoids tin :) . 'Could come in handy, for emergency clothing repair/manufacture
    Edit: assuming the same dimensions as the blanket, I mean.

    • @MeZillch
      @MeZillch  4 роки тому +1

      For Tic Tac storage a "Z" fold works best but for the slightly thicker Altoids tin, held clamped shut with a duct tape "squash clamp" at least, I use a "W" fold held tightly together with a taped band of paper like a cloth napkin ring, although it's a tight fit and won't stay shut without the outer squash clamp. I may make a vid about it some day. Even ignoring their heat reflective properties mylar sheets are great for tent building and rain water collection purposes; so they're great for survival kits. They cost less than a dollar each: www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000GCRWCG/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1

      I looked through my Amazon buying history [a nice feature which comes in handy for times like this and why I often use Amazon] and it says the ones I bought in 2013 when I made this kit are 54 inches x 84 inches, so that's probably the correct answer but I can't be 100% sure. Unlike what I said verbally in the video the CORRECTED size in the on screen text mentions 4.25 X 3 inches is the folded size as they are packed by the manufacturer. I then folded that into a Z shape to stuff in the kit.

    I have a small sling pack. I don’t carry it on me everywhere I go but it’s in my car. If I need it I can go to the car and get it. If you need to bug out you will have your vehicle right? I know this tin is supplemental but no sense in having something so small that it loses function in a real word situation.

    • @MeZillch
      @MeZillch  2 роки тому

      This is not a bug out kit. This is a supplemental "hiking in the woods and you trip over a root, your backpack irretrievably tumbles down a cliff, and you break your ankle miles away from help or cellphone reception, kit". There was a survival kit designer who died this way having left his state of the art kit in his car because he didn't want to bother lugging it on his hike.

    If you can fit one without too much trouble then go for it, but if you have to buy something or get creative without taking up much space you could better use then just forget it.

    • @MeZillch
      @MeZillch  9 місяців тому

      Wow, in addition to carrying a backpack you'd suggest additionally strapping to it a secondary backpack as your backup? I'd think that would be too heavy for me personally. As I state in the opening sentence of the notes: "Here's my bare bones, backup. . . " I never claimed this kit alone contains everything one needs to survive, indefinitely, but if you are of the mind the best approach for a backup is a second backpack, so be it.

      In an emergency situation you want to HAVE a knife, HAVE a flashlight, and HAVE a lighter/matches. Although knowing the means to fabricate this stuff is nice as a backup I personally don't think real survival kits should be based on relying on raw materials to fabricate these key devices because you have to assume your conditions are bad: car accident, broken hand, cold, windy, dark, etc.. Thanks for your post though. I'll check it out.
