- In the early 1990s, Bhutanese of Nepali origin suddenly found themselves stripped of their citizenship. Bhutan enacted a royal decree of single national identity, forcing more than 100,000 ethnic Nepalese to leave. For the next two decades, they lived in refugee camps in eastern Nepal. Almost two decades later, Bhutan remains silent on their repatriation.

Now the refugee camps are emptying with the majority of people resettled in the west. But some want to stay -- clinging on to the hope of returning home, despite reports that Bhutan’s discriminatory policies have left a percentage of its population grossly unhappy.
Bhutan is known to many as the Last Shangri-la; the country of "Gross National Happiness". But behind the façade of a peaceful nation is a state that forcefully drove out a sixth of its population -- an act which has been described as a systematic "ethnic cleansing".
Sabitra Bishwa is one of more than 100,000 Lhotsampas or Bhutanese of Nepalese origin, who found themselves stateless. In the 1980s, Bhutan introduced the policy of "one nation, one people" and alienated the Lhotsampa culture. This was followed by a revision of citizenship laws. Many Lhotsampas found they did not qualify and in the early 1990s, many were forced to leave, reaching the border with India.
But India's government also rejected them, taking them to the border with Nepal. In the 22 years since, the refugees have been unable to return to Bhutan. Without India's support, the Nepalese government has been unable to influence Bhutan.
In the first of two special programmes, "Bhutan’s forgotten people" follows Sabitra Bishwa and her family from a refugee camp in eastern Nepal to their departure for a new life in the US. Around them, the camp is emptying fast. Ninety thousand people have already left, leaving behind empty shacks and their abandoned dreams of returning home. It’s a difficult choice to make, and many are heartbroken.
For refugees like Sabitra, relocating to the US is a relief. Her sister moved there one year ago and is keen to see her again and give a better future to her family.
From the camp, we follow Sabitra to Kathmandu where the refugees are given an orientation on air travel -- from how to go through security to how to find your seat.
The films ends with Sabitra and her family boarding the plane, ready to start a new chapter in their lives in a new country, one that is completely foreign to them, and which we will explore in the show's part two, beginning on May 29th, at 2230 GMT.

My ancestors plowed those fields, their blood sweat and tears still fertilize that land to this day. It aches my heart to see Bhutan being painted as this noble and peaceful nation bubbling with happiness and prosperity when I know for a fact that the riches they drown in today came at the cost of the lives of my people. The happiness they measure themselves with today came from an overbearing depression of my people. The fruits they enjoy today were worked for and ripened by the restless effort of my people. To this day my people aren’t allowed to step foot inside our own land me included, but I promise you Grandpa, I will go there, one way or another I will make sure your ashes are scattered throughout the land you once called home either that or I will die trying.

I work with a lot of Nepali kids at my job here in the United States. Asked one of them where in Nepal she was from one day. "A refugee camp, because my parents got kicked out of Bhutan."

It's so touching, this story is identical to mine, I was refugee after the regime changed in Laos, I spent almost 3 years in Ubon Thailand refugee camp, the process of transiting to The US is almost the same except these new comer had more training and preparation more than us in late late 1979, thank you Aljezeera for this documentary

Forcing people to wear a certain kind of traditional clothing, which does not belong to their ethnic group, is wrong. Kicking them out from where they were born even more so.

I'm from NEPAL 🇳🇵 I had two bhutanese refugee teacher in my school . I wish our country could've given them citizenship. They were thrown for being nepali cultured we should've accepted them as ours .

the main thing is: Nothing justifies the removal of a citizen(many of them had Bhutanese citizenship) international law does not allow the removal of a stateless person but they did.

this is the truth behind the Bhutan government and its King. Behind the seemingly innocent facade and luring "Last Shangri-la" and "Gross National Happiness" appeal to the west, there's a reason why all Bhutanese are portrayed like that: it kicked out a fifth to a quarter of its own citizens just because they're not ethnically the same as the majority group. This is the WORST ethnic cleansing of recent time that is the most underrated and unreported by the west.
I strongly disagree with you, it seems you don't know that half of the story as I do, but we never intend to give a justification as we know what was right and wrong. you only believe them coz you only knew side of their story which was fake and misleading.

But this totally belies the historical fact that upto a quarter of a MILLION people of Nepalese ethnic background (mind you majority of which were legal Bhutanese- living there for generations and generations) were evicted. If you think what I am saying is incorrect then do correct me, tell me the truth! I mean one person or even a hundred people would have the motive to lie and conspire against your king and the government through these videos, but the truth as seen through these reports and numerous UN-approved studies time and time again is that hundreds of thousands of truly innocent and born and bred Bhutanese citizens have been saying that they were forcefully evicted from their own country. I just hope one day his majesty the 5th King takes back people living in the camp, just 6,000 remainings. I am just worried they will die in refugee camps without having fulfilled their dream to return to their home and breath their last breath there. I also hope the Bhutan government makes changes in the tourist policy of 250 a day for Resettled Bhutanse. It would be great kindness on the king's part. I would love to visit Bhutan, the Land of my father, grandfather, great-grandfather, great-grandfather's father. 🥰

I was just interested if they had any documentaries for Bhutanese Nepali people and i surprisingly ran into one, but there really isn’t much out there. All in all, my parents, grandparents, and great great grandparents were living in Bhutan until they fled to Nepal. Nepal is the country I was born. However, when I turned 4, me and my family left Nepal to move over to the United States. We had to leave behind the rest of the family members like my aunt uncle grandma and etc. Overall, it took hardships to come where I am now and I am living a good life. I’m actually glad I came to the United States and had a stable roof over my head and got the proper education I needed.

it's fact that Bhutan gevermnet surpressed ethnic Nepali people In favour of Drukpa people even though both were immigrant way back. Nepali were taken to Bhutan by 1st King of Bhutan during the reign of legendary King of Gorkha aka Ram Shah for farming in Southern Areas of Bhutan. If you do not believe, visit Gorkha Museum located in Gorkha District of Nepal, there we have safely preserved the stone-agreement between King of Gorkha(Nepal) and King of Bhutan where it has clearly been mentioned both Gorkha(Nepal) and Bhutan had an agreement to accept Nepali Immigrant in South of Bhutan for farming.

I am frm nepal , and m not disappointed with the bhutan’s decision to exile our people. Any country in this situation would act the same, if the trait of dividing the country is looming high anyone would do the same. Every country has right to protect its people , their identity and their heritage inorder to make sure their nation and people remain united. We cant be butthurt just because its our people. If we think bhutan is wrong , then what about rohinga in manmar ??? I think both the case is quite similar , the trait was similar, and they act similarly. If our nation has to go through similar situation in future, i would accept same treatment frm our government as well, cuz i cant see my nation being divided!!!!!

As you said, every country has the right to protect its people, then why weren't 1/6 of these Bhutanese citizens protected by Bhutan, but rather chose to exile them? Rohingya is totally different case compared to Bhutanese refugee situation. Rohingyas were mostly stateless Muslim settlers living in Myanmar for generations without any direct linkage to Nepal compared to nationality card and property certificate holding Bhutanese refugees.
Our monarch didn’t tell them to go away from Bhutan and they went against our culture. They are rebel of our country. It’s in 1970s southern part of Bhutan majority of Nepalese reside there and they don’t want to wear our National dress and don’t want to follow the culture. And why you have to be ashamed off, Our King told them to stay and they are main treason of our Country. But then we have humanitarian heart and you are welcomed here in our country. Ethnic cleansing in Bhutan refers to a series of initiatives to remove Lhotshampa, or ethnic Nepalis, from Bhutan. Inter-ethnic tensions escalated in Bhutan, resulting in the flight of many Lhotshampa from Bhutan to Nepal, many of them expelled by the Bhutanese military.

Well I am an Indian who has lived in Bhutan and has seen these disturbance and expulsion of Nepali origin Bhutanese. I have seen the census happening. I feel the action of Bhutanese government was natural reaction to a feeling of takeover by Nepali. The king also felt his position threatened. The decision was really very harsh and unjust on the poor people who had lived there for generations. The video is wrong that India didn't help these unfortunate people initially they were based in India, near Siliguri, however when an immediate resolution became almost impossible and some militant activities did indeed take place India had no option but to transport them to Nepal so that India doesn't become a base for militant activities. In this whole episode i feel that the Bhutanese government is to blame 100 %. First it allowed migration and settlement and also issues them ID Cards latter when someone has lived there for generation , tilled the soil and made areas like Samchi, Gelegphug etc fertile suddenly one fine day it decides to expel them. IT WAS WRONG. Bhutan's name has been soiled for good in International community. Later Bhutan adopted a tough stand some flexibility like a Green Card system or citizenship without voting rights etc could have helped these people as well as Bhutan which needs industrious people to develop their country, which these people are.

During the time of those days, Bhutan didn't chased them from the country. Bhutan only asked them to wear gho and kirAa(national dress)in school and in office as everyone does in the country. Instead they caused huge violation leading to enormous death of innocent people, not only that, the bridges were crackdown, some burned the houses and many more things that wasn't really acceptable. So there wasn't any option left for the government rather than chasing them.
Even after their bad impression and was been against to countries law, Bhutan's government official went to talk and regain the refugees but was being chased by refugees by throwing stones on them. That's the true story. Don't judge by hearing one side story, we should even know the other side story.

This reminds me of the Egyptian Pharaoh from the book of Exodus. This is a true life event, where ethnic Nepali origin were chased out from Bhutan based on their ethnic race and culture. This racial and ethnic discrimination resulted in the policy of one people one culture (something like this) which led to a rebellion and forced many individuals to flee Bhutan living everything behind, their home, land, house, cows, etc. Speaking one's language, wearing one's dress and following one's culture is a fundamental human right, and no matter where they are, they have the right to follow their ethnic culture and religion which they self recognize!

The first king of Bhutan Nawang(probably, not sure about name) visited Nepal and very impressed by Nepali people and their hard work. He took 60 nepali family including all caste and sect to migrate to Bhutan as citizen. so Nepalese history is that much old as Bhutan history. Nepali community has long history in Sikkim than their king who was tibbetian setteller. so not to be confused about Nepalese Lothsamba's history in Bhutan.

This is so sad, I can't even image loosing my citizenship from the country I was born in and lived in all my life. I bet it is very scary to move to a foreign country with foreign food, language, and culture! Our culture is very different from their culture. The way they went about expelling Nepalese people in Bhutan was not the right way to do it though. Simply limiting immigration of non native peoples would have been better. I'm not saying a multi-ethnic or multi-racial state is not possible (look at America, or somewhat Brazil). Moreover, it is just simply difficult to keep one united or functioning at a good capacity. Look at the majority of African nations, or even Nepal itself. A lot of ethnic turmoil, not to mention nobody would want to move there. Bhutan has even a higher GDP than Nepal. Simply put, homogenous nations generally have an easier time forming & advancing their nations due to shared beliefs, ethnicity, race, or religion (ex: Japan, Iceland, South Korea).

I have a kinda similar story so Me and my sister moved from bhutan to the USA and when we were waiting in line at airport(JFK) there was one Asian man(kinda like security) and he saw us and he straight away asked us are you guys from nepal. We then said no we are from bhutan and his was stunned to speak and he spoke one line Bhutanese. He kinda said like, wait you guys are from bhutan before we could answer him one of the security came and said let them go to check their passport but he was didn’t want us to go but we went straight to the passport checking area and got out of the airport. After 4 years, I still remember his face, his reaction, and the way he speak. Now I kinda realizing that may be he was nepali refugee or could be Bhutanese I am not sure. I feel weird now thinking about it cause why he was shocked and wanted to know more about me. Anyways, I just wanted to share my experience even tho it’s not that related but somehow it is.

For many generations Bhutan government have provided so many things to Bhutanese people including Nepali speaking Bhutanese citizens such as land, education, home n so on. But in early 1990s some groups of anti national were formed and went against the nation by threatening n disobeying the rules and Bhutanese code of conduct n were protesting for separate state n democracy which led to violence. So many lifes were lost at that time by the heads of their won people who refused to join the group so because of some of their own ethnic and race many innocent Nepali Bhutanese had to suffer who use to love Bhutan. How Bhutanese govt could let that happen. How Bhutanese govt could let the country get divide. They had no choice but to make them leave the nation. Otherwise so many Bhutanese life could have lose. To those I must tell who went against the nation is very shamefull even after the government have done so much for them for many generations. Today there are still Nepali speaking Bhutanese citizens living in Bhutan who r now the proud citizen of Bhutan have cosider so luck n r happy in Bhutan because all r given equal priority n opportunity. Before this documentary all I heard about Bhutan was a peace loving and environmentalist country which is good but the media should do their job and report the bad side as well.

This is the reason why Bhutan tours weren't including the South. They put tour packages in almost all directions, except the south.
The south is still occupied by ethnic nepali bro 😊 it is not in the tour package because there is not much to see there
Bhutan has become peacefull and a happy nation because it has solved its biggest problem which is the revolt of the bad nepali people that tryed to overthrw the country and make their separate state if they were really bhutanese then they will have coexisted and be unitfied but they have different plan

A very different and sad story from their side..and I heard and read very sad and different stories in Bhutan..many Bhutanese were killed by them and they demanded their own government and country..

Does anyone know of Dr. Bhampa Rai's current condition? There were several articles in 2018 reporting he was ill, and the most recent interview was in mid-2019. I haven't been able to find any new information.
