- In the early 1990s, Bhutanese of Nepali origin suddenly found themselves stripped of their citizenship. Bhutan enacted a royal decree of single national identity, forcing more than 100,000 ethnic Nepalese to leave. For the next two decades, they lived in refugee camps in eastern Nepal. Almost two decades later, Bhutan remains silent on their repatriation.

Now the refugee camps are emptying with the majority of people resettled in the west. But some want to stay -- clinging on to the hope of returning home, despite reports that Bhutan’s discriminatory policies have left a percentage of its population grossly unhappy.
Bhutan is known to many as the Last Shangri-la; the country of "Gross National Happiness". But behind the façade of a peaceful nation is a state that forcefully drove out a sixth of its population -- an act which has been described as a systematic "ethnic cleansing".
Sabitra Bishwa is one of more than 100,000 Lhotsampas or Bhutanese of Nepalese origin, who found themselves stateless. In the 1980s, Bhutan introduced the policy of "one nation, one people" and alienated the Lhotsampa culture. This was followed by a revision of citizenship laws. Many Lhotsampas found they did not qualify and in the early 1990s, many were forced to leave, reaching the border with India.
But India's government also rejected them, taking them to the border with Nepal. In the 22 years since, the refugees have been unable to return to Bhutan. Without India's support, the Nepalese government has been unable to influence Bhutan.
In the first of two special programmes, "Bhutan’s forgotten people" follows Sabitra Bishwa and her family from a refugee camp in eastern Nepal to their departure for a new life in the US. Around them, the camp is emptying fast. Ninety thousand people have already left, leaving behind empty shacks and their abandoned dreams of returning home. It’s a difficult choice to make, and many are heartbroken.
For refugees like Sabitra, relocating to the US is a relief. Her sister moved there one year ago and is keen to see her again and give a better future to her family.
From the camp, we follow Sabitra to Kathmandu where the refugees are given an orientation on air travel -- from how to go through security to how to find your seat.
The films ends with Sabitra and her family boarding the plane, ready to start a new chapter in their lives in a new country, one that is completely foreign to them, and which we will explore in the show's part two, beginning on May 29th, at 2230 GMT.

she's very lucky to have gone to same city as her city and other friends. She has immediate support and won't have to suffer as much from the depression and loneliness others have had to face. And to think, there are millions of refugees around the world just like these Napali Bhutanese.
Just thought I would share my long story short: I am a Nepali Bhutanese refugee and is a u.s citizen now. I was just a 12 year old kid when I left Nepal. I was sad to leave my friends behind but also excited to see new country. Back in Nepal, we were taught English, Nepali , dzonkha etc in school. I never understood why we had to learn Dzongkha. I always had this thing in my mind that if the king of Bhutan, father of the now king, don’t know their names but whoever the king was at that time. He chased ppl out and that’s how my parent and grandparents had to leave Bhutan. I never understood why their language was given a priority when they didn’t want us in their country. My parents always talked good about bhutan and it’s places. I won’t lie, to be honest, I used to curse the king who chased ppl out of the country. I used to curse him because we were in so poor state . Some Nepali ppl would call us with horrible names, bully us, just becayse we were a refugee. As a kid, this things could affect you, you know. And I used to think if it wasn’t for the king who chased ppl out, we wouldn’t have gone through difficult situations. Somehow my dad got separated with his sisters who are still in Bhutan. Maybe it was the part of the reason why I hated Bhutan’s king at such a young age but I also liked listening to my moms story : her entire youth spent in Bhutan. How their lifeStyle was etc etc I used to get curious of how beautiful bhutan is as she would tell me. At times I didn’t like the way they adored Bhutan so much but now I know why they love it so much. They were born there, spent their entire childhood there just like I was born in Nepal and I spent half of my childhood in Nepal. They have so much love for their birthplace just like I do. Now that I’m 24 years old, I don’t hate Bhutan’s king, I guess I have matured a well enough now lol. Now I think that He had his own reasons to kick the ppl out. I don’t blame him nor India or Nepal. Ppl had their own reasons to leave Bhutan whether of fear of losing life or their wives/daughters being raped or just because of the clothes that they made it mandatory to wear.
Now I’ve come to completely different country and it’s been so freaking long years, I don’t care about what happened in the past but at the same time This kinda documentary brings back memories. We didn’t have enough money back in Nepal but somehow we were still happy in little things that we used to find joy in. It’s been 12 years that I haven’t been to Nepal. I’ve wondered how much have changed, maybe completely. But I will definitely go back to visit someday. P.S thanks to the internet. my dad gets to see and talk to his sisters through fb.

Loved reading every single word of your comment @RoseLimbu. You along with all the Nepalese-speaking people who had to leave Bhutan sure have endured a lot at such an early age. There are many Nepalese-speaking Bhutanese here in Canada too and I never thought much about this topic. But after watching a couple of documentaries in succession, I learned a lot even though I used to hear a lot in news during my early youth about the problem while never paying much attention. Kudos to you for having matured so well! I hope you go back to Nepal for a visit, after all, birthplace has a special meaning.
Sad man it was done bcs some of the bhutanese nepali esxpically the tribe leaders poisned their peoples mind making them revolt we all know bhutan is small country our identity is wht keeping us a idenpendent fountry but many of nepali where not understanding that's wgy my king took a big step but rest assured there are still many nepali living here we are like brothers we love each other and they follow hindusim but also respecting buddhism

the main reason for the depression is a cultural difference that they could not adjust... please allow them to have their own culture and religion...
They weren't invited here to have their own culture, it's a shady business of cheap labor funded by Big Corps, Mega Churches, and so on. Big corporations will have 2 generations or 3 generations of their families working like a donkey for them and earning barely anything. They would not send any money back to their "so-called country" because they got no one there. They pay taxes and many don't even have any idea of filing their taxes back for years. Whenever there are more factories opening in the West or they need some cheap labor, they will come up with this design.
The Nepalese preacher of that church is so stupid, Nepal give him a shelter for 25 years but as soon as he reached there begin to criticized the land and culture where he live for several years. He should know Bhutan through him out because of the cultural and religion differences. So try to be inclusive and learn to respect all culture so again you should have to face any problem in your life, for the Nepalese origin Bhutanese who are there i would like to say learn to enjoy the life be happy holding american citizenship, work hard for you and your family. life will definitely good there then in camp, be in touch with Nepal.

Benu Khatri money isn't important to most refugee a sense of purpose and identy is way more important. I truely hope eveyone will find some sort of closure and live happy lives and not forget their culture or who their are.

Well being from Rochester, I left a long time ago because there is no economy there anymore sadly. Most of the city itself is a ghetto, with the suburbs livable but aren't what they used to be. I can understand why they get depressed. Frankly I'm surprised they don't get settled in more rural places with mountains. They would probably be happier.

I was shocked as to why India rejected these Bhutanse of Nepali descent.
India usually accepts refugees.
That is cause India is a hypocrite sometimes. They could have easily resettled these refugees in Nepali-speaking areas of India and since most are Hindus and since India is hindu majority they could have easily assimilated and would have no cultural issues. But they did not. Yet millions of illegal Bangladeshis live in India and the govt is not doing much.
Simple, they don't want Nepalese power growing around north east India. Sikkim Darjeeling Bhutan Assam goes Nepalese it's hard for them to control

Beautiful and touching. I know America is hard to adapt, but I have high hope for the children. I just feel sad that many of them converted to Christianity, but I understand their decisions in the strange land. I just did not want them to lose too much of themselves in America. I didn’t understand the history of why so many Nepali refugees came to settled in my home state Minnesota until I watched this video. As a nurse, I’ve worked with some Nepalis and they are very nice people. They tell me they are from Bhutan and tried to explained to me why they are refugees, but I didn’t understand the whole story. Now I do thanks to this wonder video.

First, USA took you in does not mean you have to change the religion. There are folks who try to take advantage of you but stay strong. Be proud of what you are. I have been to Church, Mosque many times but I am what I am. A proud Hindu!! I respect all religion and their beliefs, so does Christians should.
I think the young kid who committed suicide was -- may be they were coercing him to change his religion. Not everybody is sellout, give these innocents a break and don't force or make them discard what they are and they believed in for generations. I wish there were some Nepalese (or Hindu) community to reach out to them. Perhaps, that would help them a little bit. Stay strong my Nepalese speaking folks, it's just few years. Once you get hang of it, all will be fine. Don't stop learning languages, and American culture, but stay away from converting.

Here in US, except older or Bhutan born refugees people they all are known and have identity as Nepali American citizens ( not Nepalese merican) for youths who were born in Nepal as refugee. They wouldn’t called as Bhutanese American ( youths that born in Nepal) since they were born as refugee. So they( Nepal born youths) called as Nepali American other than their Bhutan born parents because of their origin.
It made me sad to see them convert after watching them dance to their own songs. I can see why they'd take their lives. The emptiness of it all. You are what you are and can be nothing else not even for money a house and a car.

Though, it's sad for those refugees but they shouldn't go against our king and government. Here in Bhutan there are 100k plus lhosampa( Nepali ) living here in Bhutan peacefully. They didn't go against our country. They are immigrants in Bhutan in 1960s. Lemme ask the question those who are reading this comment, “will you be happy if your own son and daughter trying to kill you ? ”. Relate this situation and judge. Don't look down bad on us ( Bhutanese ). We are not bad person, they deserve this. If we let them have their own cultural, they will let our country under big countries. The reason why they refused to leave their country (Bhutan) is because they cannot follow the Bhutanese traditional custom, and religion and so on. But what are they doing in United States ?

These people had to languish their life in the makeshifts in Nepal for decades. Bhutanese government is one of the oppressive govt in the world. They heavily dependent with India and an Indian puppet country.These people were demanding for democracy,transparency and basic human rights because of that the king felt threaten. Bhutan has an autocratic ruler.Also these people were culturally and linguistically suppressed from the state machinery. Shame to Bhutan for this kind of atrocities and brutality.

P C Nepalese people are a mix of Tibeten and indian ancestry. That’s why some look tibeten/Bhutanese/Chinese while some look Indian or some look mixed. This video focused on pretty much one family (brahmin/chettri family) so they looked more Indian so you can’t really generalise all Nepalese based of the one family you saw here.
As for culture Bhutanese Buddhism is the same as Tibetan Buddhism, the same Buddhism followed in Nepal so you’re wrong. Some ethnic groups of Nepal follow Buddhism, some follow Hinduism, some follow both so you can’t really say their culture is different.

Those refugees abandoned their own country and they insult the country who gave shelter for 20 years. If they have stayed in Bhutan they would not been through all these problems. Bhutan government never forcefully chased them. They refused to obey their own country's culture. They were bhutanese right from first citizenship act of Bhutan 1958. May be few not. Their ancestors were from Nepal, Sikkim, Darjeeling not they. If they were Nepalese they would have live in their home or their uncle, brothers home in Nepal not in refugee camp..if tomorrow usa deport all Indians from USA will they live in refugee camp ..no they will come to own home. Cuz they r Indian who have home in India. But if today usa will deport American with Indian root, they will live in refugee camp in India cuz they already lost root in India.

Some lohtsampa leaders might be wrong in way to handle the crisis. But majority of refugee were common citizens. N lhotsampa did not opposed to follow rule of country but we're against culture n dress imposition which was done feeling they will support India like sikkims merger if did not come to mono culture . But Sikkim was princely state of British n british had put option to merge in future with referendum while Bhutan was Already full independent like Nepal from British era. Which was not possible to merge with India under UNO charter through any referendum. Leaders of lhotsampa n bhutanese govt could have find out way to solve crisis with understanding with commitment towards national integrity with open discuss n with commitment from lhotsampa to find out who is not citizen of Bhutan n to deport peacefully. May be there was some outer political force also which was barrier between govt n lhotsampa.
It’s important to look after their mental health issues as the cultural differences is too overwhelming for them! And the stigma about mental health issues is prevalent everywhere and it’s sad and disappointing.

Since i am really intrested in digging past and as per what i know about this case is that those people's real origin is from nepal. That's the reason why they have same language and celebrates every festival Nepal does. Back then india invited many workers from across the india-nepal border to their country. As during the time of 2nd king in Bhutan, Bhutan started development and construction of motor roads.
India and Bhutan have such a good relationship and india invited those people to Bhutan during that days to help Bhutan construct many motor roads and other development as side worker. Our beloved kind king let those people stay in our country; the sourthern part of Bhutan. Thus they are called as "LHOTSHAMPAS". (LHO= SOUTHERN, TSHAMPAS = SETTLERS).
It's been long that they have stayed in our country. Yet we Bhutanese plus the king and the government had no restrictions for them. But then every country got their own rules and regulations. And in Bhutan there are various types of people yet to preserve the culture and traditions of the country we are and have to wear our national dress in SCHOOL, MONSATRIES, OFFICE and DURING SPECIAL OCCASIONS. During our 4th kings time. Since we have high respect to our culture and tradition. Our king came up with a idea called " One people, One nation." Where all people living in Bhutan will be united as one having national language as "DZONGKHA" NATIONAL DRESS GHO FOR BOYS AND KIRA FOR GIRLS. When all the people living in EAST,WEST AND NORTHERN BHUTAN accepted the idea of our 4th king many of the LHOTSHAMPAS started to revolt.
They went against and wore their own dress. They rebelled and told that the want whole sourthern part of Bhutan. They told that they will have their own national dress and national language. The came as side worker, we accepted them as pur family and they try'na take advantage of it. Do you think it is fair??
[ ] Many of the LHOTSHAMPAS left BHUTAN WILINGLY because of them many of our LHOTSHAMPAS are chased as well. This is the ugly truth. And the FACT for Bhutan in not accepting them back in our country.

A team from Bhutan went to their place to get them. But Bhutanese OFFICIALS GOT INJURED AND ATTACKED by them at their place. Luckily Those BHUTANESE officials reach back Bhutan.
