My couch rating system:
5 - A must-watch - do not pass this one up
4 - It's really good, you should see it
3 - It's OK - maybe good for a rental
2 - It's not that good and I wouldn't recommend it
1 - It's terrible and I definitely don't recommend it
0 - Cutting off a finger is better than watching this
#netflix #the8show #squidgame - Розваги
8 - Billionaire, owns just about the entire system, decides the fate of those beneath her, shovels accountability onto others and presents as a careless personality and later a hypocrite.
7- Senior CEO, understands the struggles with the lower levels and empathizes with them (likely comes from the bottom), agrees that nobody should be oppressing anybody.
6 - Junior CEO, only self-interested. Craps on those beneath him, only spends time with those above him, seeks to oppress lower levels, especially the regular worker.
5 - Middle Manager - Strong empathy, fears lack of control, mentally ill but capable.
4 - Intern - Seeking to rise in the system, sucks up to others, rises quickly in the favor of the higher levels but is still technically a lower level.
3 - Lead Worker - Trying to reach the end, empathizes with everyone until beginning to be oppressed, just wants a fair shake.
2 - Regular Worker - Hardened by life, strong moral compass, hates Junior CEO for oppressive behaviors, doesn't blame middle manager until the end when the manager lets the Junior CEO 'off the hook' for his past misconduct.
1 - Disabled(/Unemployed) - Unable to be as effective as others in the system, considered 'foolish' as he dresses often as a clown.
Well-done.
That's actually a great way to look at it
I had made a comment how I saw all these floors and positions reflecting the nuances of a capitalist society . I really like your breakdown , as a disabled person myself , it really hit home .
I definitely agree.
solid analysis
I never felt so consumed with someone harming a character, but number 8 needed a serious ass whooping lol
This show was so frustrating to watch sometimes, especially when she unties that guy near the end. Some of the characters just acted down right stupid.
Edit: also now I think about it, why did they not do all of their toilet business outside in the communal area instead of giving it all to number 1?
Well it was established early on that the nurse is susceptible to mental illness.
yeah i thought so myself. But then I realised, that the game "makers" probably chosed every person for who he/she is. So i guess that Number 5 was just mentally ill. If you look carefully number 5 has been hallucinating and seeing weird things since the beginning. Number 4 has always been submissive and wasn't able to take the lead role (Which is my guess why she didn't knock out number 8 any time sooner). Everything actually does make sense, if you really to get in their mindset. After being tortured for weeks, you either become super aggressive to the people who tortured you, or you don't. Except number 1 everyone like 2,3,5 were scared to revenge themselves like hit or kill 6 or 8...
This show got me so mad haha. I had to remind myself that it's better to feel anger at the characters then boredom. Number 5 let her 'superior' in the show off the hook and it came back to haunt her and everyone else beneath her in the end.
what got me pissed was that the only time 8 show really got a beating was the time floor 5 hit her with the golf club that's literally it after everything she did to them :|
@@ribman_S to be fair, it’s just depicting how real rich people get off the hook :/ I mean, how many elite’s have you seen take real responsibilities and consequences from their actions? Very little. That’s the thing… They just find a way out either by money or sympathy, and even then, they get a “lesser” sentence because they either hold power/money/influence and “it will be a great loss to the world if they disappear”
This series was EVERYT HING... kept me going..im only pissed that no one tortured number 8. She was pure evil
This sentiment is whats behind the production 👁️
Exactly. She was NEVER held accountable for anything. When they tried to shovel the crap on to her, she refused it and was able to do so because she was at the top. Moving the crap around is synonymous with dodging accountability. It's easier to blame the lower floors, or the first floor, then to put the blame (poop) on the eighth floor that has almost complete control over the entire system.
@@Floridablaze97 Well Said. Sadly, it is conveying a real truth that the ones at the top will always be untouchable, will never suffer the consequences of their cruelty. If this narrative is true, it is time to be consciously aware that this show is indeed a replica of what is really happening in our society. most of us are HELPLESS
@@plymakkayestudio1827 You're right, but they aren't untouchable. Hence the "revolution" scenes. They were able to band together and hold them accountable by force. That's the only way these people ever experience true accountability. The masses have to come together and collectively decide to enforce it on them. Otherwise, they can always talk their way out of it.
@@Floridablaze97 right 👍 on
I found this show incredibly interesting at times for the strong analogies and parallels to how western capitalism works . I don’t know what the intentions of the creators were, but as a disabled American watching, it really resonated with me about how America is structured and it’s history of inequality.
you do realize capitalism works like this everywhere and not just in the western countries right? so they're not making parallels to the western capitalism. they're only showing their own, korean capitalism, and you just found similarities because you live in a similar society.
People seem to not get that this isn't a game, this is reality itself and the series does not need to develop the carachters because they just need to represent their social class! This movie is full of theese metaphors just like squid game but this, ladies and gentlemen, this was so straight to the point! There's a lot of study behind every scene and you need a second rewatch to understand everything even because it needs a lot of """marxist""" based point of view to get everithing. Just remember that coreans tend to feel more theese kind of class oppression and ofc they are going to absolutly gonna talk about it.
The big issue with basing it around class struggle, which seem to be the initial intention, is that it immediately falls apart after the revolution. The characters make non-sensical choices and overall (especially after 6 is released and it goes back to the original structure) it just falls further and further from any analogy of class. You can kind of see it with 8 enjoying the torture, but that kind of falls flat with the 'artistic' element of it.
The idea of the interactions of class and money as a pseudo-unit of power is interesting, but is either ignored or just falls apart as it continues.
Also, the oppression of the higher floors on the lower takes place far too late and for far too little time to be proper. And everything before that isn't really to do with the class of the people, but character, sure they still conflict because of material needs, but that's not really because of a developed class, just their innate characteristics. You can generally see that best in the interactions between 2 and 6.
And sure, they don't need to develop the characters, but the problem was that they did, and they did so in a way completely antithetical to the classes established.
8 grew more emotional, even when in positions of power.
7 didn't really have concrete development, but he acted entirely against his theoretical class.
6 kinda worked, an upper middle class that gets eventually tossed away by higher powers.
5 kinda worked too, a middle class that becomes soulless because of the contradictions of class interaction.
4 acts as a sheep led by a shepherd, at least much until the end, but because of the timing it didn't really work.
3 kinda worked, he stayed as a largely unimportant figure until the time of revolution, but he should, at least theoretically, be much more productive and helpful after the fact (his character development, the melancholy and large unimportance (until shooting the cameras I guess but honestly, that can barely be considered, it happens right at the end and had no indication throughout the rest of it)) his character much better suited a lower number (1, or maybe 2 at a push).
2 did alright, but she should've been 3 or maybe 4, she was the workhorse, 2 (at least in terms of class) should be the undesirables, the largely unhelpful to all until the very end (so swapping 2 and 3 probably wouldn't have been that bad).
And 1 was easily the largest mis-characterisation when talking in terms of class, he worked perfectly at the start, being almost useless, an actual leech on their resources, but that just vanished in the second half, especially after the reveal. It was simply appalling if you wish to talk solely in class.
TLDR; I think it was trying to do a class analogy, a human nature question, and a greed question all in one, and subsequently failing at all 3.
@@ewlum hmmm when you think of their classes, do you think about before the game and during the game? Or only one? I think who they were before affected how they behaved in their new class. Ex no 7 and 6 was stable in their role. No 8 was chaotic…
@@RA-ly2yp both, and honestly, they were more like their 'classes' before they interacted with each other. It would've made more sense for it to not just be their individual characteristics but more defined parts of those 'class characteristics' and become rigid hierarchical roles (which it did form a rigid hierarchy, but not one in accordance with class)
If you think about it, none of them are really rich. Like eight floor! She was a street performer, she isn't rich so I don't think they're supposed to represent their social class. I think the floor numbers are just really random representing the luck of people. I think the series is about how different people handle their money and the stupid decisions they make with it or to have it.
One thing i want to point out is how 8 said she wanted to paint her feelings while seeing the other floors suffering, this is exactly how a majority, if not all, of the millionaires/billionaires do to "help" the lower class and the poor, they put on a show, they paint stuff, they make "art" but doesn't really do anything to actually help the others, its just to boost their egos.
THE PLATFORM! That’s the movie you were thinking of.
I said the same thing as soon as he said he didn't want to give it away LOL
How about you not spoil it for others who haven't seen it? He literally said he didn't want to name it as it would spoil that movie for others. So, cool.
@@quinnhall8205 your the one who went into the comments fam, should have expected this ik people are like also giving their thoughts and review for movie but again you should have expected this
I hear what you are saying. My theory is 7 is responsible with his business partner. I feel like if I were to watch it back the things he says and does would make sense to that theory.
I would say the rationale of the show is to simply show human nature at its core. What is anyone willing to do for money? What does money mean to individuals? Is it something to hold onto or something to throw away with no fear of consequence?
In comparison to squid game this show was more of a psychological thriller and played on a lot more on our emotions I think. Definitely more of an artistic approach.
End credit scene debunks 7 had anything to do with it
You're just wrong. Did you watch the end credit scene?
@@kc_h7h exactly. 7 writes a screenplay about his experience in the show. That does not mean he had a hand in creating the show.
This serie shows so many levels that is similar topics to our real world: gap between rich and poor, time is money, concept of money, suffering from Hunger, sadistical and violent behaviour, torture, do anything for views, concept of entertainment like movie screens but also social media screens, working together like countries do against other countries, money can buy u anything except happiness, sewage system, double crossing, trust issues, revenge, mental health, greed, desperation, i loved this show and it stays very down to earth, especially the ending
Exactly !!
Remind me of standford prison experiment with some similar mechanic in platform.
Brilliance or madness...maybe a bit of both! Good review!👍👍👍
5 releasing 6 in a delusional state was the hardest part to watch and to me was the biggest stretch. Fantastic series overall though. Very disturbing at times.
Agreed!!
Whenever she was triggered by any kind of stress…She would totally lose touch with reality and have hallucinations of what she “wanted” to see and believe.
She was the absolute worst person to be babysitting 4,6 and 8…2 should have locked her up in her room as well. 🤦♂️
I already knew things were gonna go bad when 5 got left in charge of babysitting. 🤦♂️
I feel like it really made sense. Floor 5 was in her delusional state during that time so floor 6 took the advantage and seduced her into freeing him. Her past was all about affection. Her husband never loved her, so she met a love swindler at a club and got scammed financially, but she still hopes for affection; why it was so easy for floor 6 to manipulate her. And her character is a part of society where they believe the goods in everyone and trust thy system.
It was the small ideas of what direction this story was going, that kept keeping me engaged in the series.
Episodes 1&2 did their job in capturing the audience, as it kept us asking questions. The middle episodes answered while giving more us more questions to think about. Awesome show.
i honestly think this shown is better than squid game
Binge watched it last night! I enjoyed it initially due to its sophisticated plot and, as you mentioned, I really liked the idea that the structure unfolded gradually as well. But I was disappointed by the ending, it left many questions unanswered, and some things seemed to be illogical in the end. For example, I was troubled by the portrayal of the character from the 8th floor. Initially depicted as a narcissistic and unscrupulous woman, she was later revealed to be an artist. Like what was the intended “lesson”? Was her intention to observe cruelty merely for the sake of her art? Or widening boundaries in terms of art leads to becoming desensitized to normal human emotions and getting pleasure from cruelty? This portrayal seems to cast artists in a rather negative light, doesn't it?
Even reason given for her to loose her billions is childish. Apparently she destroyed art gallary with crane coz she felt it was not art 😂😂😂
She Is the representation of the Rich spoiled Kids, She Is very well done and doesn't need to be logical because this is a critic to society itself, this series just wants to make you want kill rich people, see it like socialist propaganda.
number 8 represent when artis go to far for their inspiration.
@@plymakkayestudio1827I think this is the correct interpretation.
@@plymakkayestudio1827 that's ridiculous.
It was definitely a binge. What was so funny was that the slow moments of the show was when they keep running up and down for more time, and eventually that amounted to nothing. Which was a direct comparison to the viewer watching the show for entertainment.
Great review, I couldn’t agree more with all of your points
Also it's from the manga money game and pie game so there's going to be a sequel
Saw Past Lives this week. Oh boy, talk about raw, in-your-face melancholy! It somehow managed to evoke powerful feelings of childhood memories, past r/ships, all the 'what could have beens', and did it masterfully, with very little action or dialogue. I kind of want to hate it for that, but just can't...
I give it 6 rooms out of 8
tbh this series is reminiscent of the irl story of 'nasubi', the japanese guy who unbeknownst to him was livestreamed 24/7, in several scrapping situations
I'm hyped to watch this now. Thanks!
It is similar to that of the movie platform….anyways it portrays the power of money and the problems between social classes
This reminded me allot of the Stanford prison experiment
Same
Great review! Thank you
My wife hated it coz she thought it was just all violence and torture, but I quite liked it. It made me uncomfortable but also memorable.
human dramas --> The Glory. Holy Moly that was a ride.
oh my! thank you!
I was really enjoying the show, but the ultraviolence put me off of it. Decided not to finish it, it was just too unpleasant for me :/
Have you seen Alice in border that came first then the squid games but nobody ever seen which sucks cuz it's pretty good you should see it and give your rating
No
@@slee2695Incredible show. I enjoyed it even more than squid game. I believe they’re making a season 3…
they were always mad at everyone else, but 8 and 6 were always the bad guys from the start, nobody was angry at the them.. (until it escalated) soooo weird to me
Dont forget to wait until the end of last episode 8, post credit scene.
Thanks for this comment. I didn't know there was one! 😮
@@blunt3862 You are welcome. Yea that caught me by surprise. Usually i just skip credit scene. Lucky for me ^_^
I loved this. And in standard Korean show fashion, starts out slow, turns our expectations of characters on their heads, and ultimately once ramped up never lets their foot off the gas OR the viewer's neck.
The social critique was a bit too heavy handed
It was still solid
true...so clunky
This show didn't automatically show up for me on Netflix. I'd never heard of it until I watched this review and then I had type it into the Netflix search bar. And I'm not happy I did. I binged this which I guess means they got what they needed out of me but I hated it so much! And there was no reward (for this viewer) for sticking it out to the end.
btw those yellow rails at 6:00 dosn't take too much time to take of.
When the other team get the power and want to finish. Why do just don't buy anything?
8 show was great
I'd like to see a review with spoilers to hear all your thoughts because not enough people are talking about this show
I agree
And I felt like the contestants are tiktok celebrities while the masterminds are the tiktok viewers 😅
It was fun to binge but with several annoying plot holes. SPOILER: Just the fact alone that 1st floor paid for a room change but got sent a pricing sheet instead made no sense to me since that’s not what he asked for!
The sub is slightly inaccurate, in Korean he asks if he can change rooms and they answered, if he said I want to change rooms, maybe it would have been different.
@@ChoppzzOG Oh ok that makes more sense ! Thanks ☺️
Its very sinple the name of series is infinite(8) show : the show of life. We don't know who created earth or its resources.
After few episodes scrnes of torture are monotonous
Yeah, especially since they were mainly supposed to entertain the audience, and I have a really hard time rationalizing why somebody would be eager to watch somebody being tortured. I can see how some people might like the fights and even the tazering to a lesser extend but the torture would likely go too far for the vast majority of the audience
[plot spoilers from this point]
I also found it really weird that Floor 2 even trusted Floor 5 to tend to 4 6 and 8, because she already locked everybody in their rooms to prevent the crimes but she didn't even consider that 5 could be the culprit. I can sort of understand why 5 set 4, 6 and 8 free because she had impaired judgement due to low/high blood sugar levels combined with the alcohol.
All of this would have easily been prevented if 2 just fed 4 6 and 8 herself or even better if they just kept 4, 6 and 8 in the common area to ensure that they would be punished by only receiving half of the price money for not being in their room at night (I wonder if breaking the rule twice would deduct 75% instead of 50%).
This was a brilliant show, touched on dark themes, and extremely subtle foreshadowing.
Edit: also I liked how the showrunners and audience were left out of the story. It left the players to their own devices.
In real life, when shit hits the fan, no one is going to step in and correct our mistakes. There isn’t a grown up to make things fair. That is what Squid Game did, the masked man made it fair for everybody. Here, the players were treated like adults. In Squid Game they were treated like children, quite literally.
binged it att the way
You can just easily turn the heirarchy upside down by fasting.
How can I describe people like Floor 8 with one phrase in English?? NPD? or an attention seeker??
I met a lot of that kinda people who never care about others a bit but only their reputation or spotlight. Most of them are talentless but not even tryna make efforts to improve their skills or abilities.
While watching the episodes, I was so nauseous, because it was like watching old myself. Looking down other people or their mistakes to ease my anxiety. I even couldn't feel any remorse for death of my family members but did care about how people see me.
at last, every character, even floor six showed us growth of maturity and overcoming their weaknesses but Floor 8 was still Floor 8 in real world. I feel the show displays how those kind of people are pure evils and how impossible to fix their insanities
Spoiler
The sleep deprivation scene, and the part where 1 dies, 8 showed no remorse, psychopaths don’t feel anxiety or remorse, she didn’t care about the harm inflicted on others, she found excitement in dominance.
plaid shirts are baaaccckkkk
I thought it was a spin off Squid Game. It was a live action adaptation of a WEBTOON. It's kinda different from the original material but I think it's better than it
It’s hard to do super direct 1 for 1 adaptations of cartoons/manga or even anime to live action without some significant changes. A lot of stuff translates really poorly between different mediums without taking some creative liberties.
@@maddiewantsbagels I don't want it to be direct adaptation. I don't like the original that much because it's torture and trauma pörn starting from some point. Show kept the good balance
Nice
i mean even after i see that briefs backstory of 6 and 8 im still hate them and think they are monsters xD
And when it comes to the all 8 characters, i think they are all a fucking idiots to the point i dont like any of them xD especially idiots when it comes to fighting/revolting xD
Mentally ill 4 and 5 xD
Somehow mentally ill and idiot 3 xD
Strong and reasonable but stupid 2 xD
Humble but fox like 1 xD
Brutal 6 who is just brutal xD
Humble 7 but still an idiot xD
And then is 8, i dont even know how to describe her especially in last episodes xD Fucked up in head at least xD
The payoff was money. It was actually very simple i think. The depravity that comes with more wealth. And how it can become addictive. They struggled to choose an end amount.
I loved the show, my only critique was the fantasies lasted too long and I found myself fast forwarding til it got back to the “real” parts
This show is the mixture of movie the plateform abd suid game show.. But is more brutal, emotional, suspenseful, voilence...
🔥show
авторы фильма понимают что такое удар битой по голове? :( как люди после такого выжили? или бита была пенопластовая???
Thought it started strong but then became boring, shallow and too repetitive. No real investment in the characters as we only are given a very cursory view of their background. Ending sloppy and rushed. Time should have been spent on the character development rather than repeated torture depictions
True. Well said. If any, the show writers tried to romanticised stupid senseless tortures one too many times.
yeah they kept throwing the (character imagines one thing but then it doesn't happen) and it doesn't keep the viewer engaged cuz they senselessly torture the lower floor characters until ep 5 and many would have quit the show by then because of the mere violence
@@RawMediaArchive Idk, I was fine with the violence in the way that it was varied enough and built up enough that it made sense to me. To me, I guess the sheer violence was the point and that getting emotionally exhausted of all that was what they were going for, cause they really did a good job, get oppressed, spend some scenes enjoying that freedom, then when you don't expect it, they somehow get oppressed again but it's worse this time, it's damn bipolar. In my view, I guess I was just fine with feeling tired of the violence and cheated by it when it happened enough to keep watching, doesn't mean I was uncomfortable or didn't feel depressed but I guess feeling all that just stuck to me, that being said if you don't want to or stop watching the show cause of that, that's valid too
That's the intent. We are not supposed to get alot of character development. Were just supposed to see how all these individuals that we know nothing about navigate the game.
@@RawMediaArchive 💯
Number 8 😍
It was pretty good.
I loved it😂😂. It was funny and sad..
That was waste of my time. Awfoul series, it made me goes mad for how the participants are soooo stupid, man, you will find yourself yelling at the screen "No stupid thats not answer". i probably say that this is like a Dora the Explorer for adults, but like 10 times worst.... if you want to get mad, watch it, its not entreteining, its not fun, its not inteligent, its just anoying....
The show went good then great then naaahh
To the people who think the show gets boring and that the characters become shallow while making bad decisions: I'm sorry that you don't understand the the influence of Korean culture on the writing, small details, psychological nuances, and dark abstract concepts of this how. Some of the best writing I've seen in years if you actually know what's happening.
Right? I kinda like the wrong decisions they made. Because it also happens in reality, people make the wrong decisions especially when it comes to money. We all do stupid shit.
this is possibly one of the worst i've ever watched.
cinematography is insanely good, good series but dumb character
Spolier alert, though trying my best not to spoil
The tragedy was there's are point where they could've discussed pooling their monies so as to help others so they can leave early with everyone leaving with as much money as possible. That discussion was never had. In the end, that's what basically happened. Though that's a good example of capitalism forcing us to be individualistic even at the cost of our own life and well being. Class solidarity would've had all of them "win" had they shared their winnings as one floor volunteered to do to get out early. And another floor eventually did but too late.
The show was okay. It’s definitely worth a watch, but I don’t think I’d watch it again. 6/10.
