Love Love Love !!! this song pattie was trying to all of us way back in the 80s, but it took me years to understand this song !!! This song got me through a lot of horrible relationships... Thank you Pattie for your help love you always ❤️❤️❤️❤️🙏
Warner Brother's was hoping for a crossover hit with this immensely talented lady, hence the colours of the rainbow. There was a VIP from LA on set with us every day.It was a joy to work with Patti , but ....got to be honest.....Patti's Mom was the most fun & the sweetest. In this time of necessary scrutiny I think this song would have been on the pop charts. It is so catchy & Patti's voice is so amazing. This was filmed in Toronto by Total Eclipse Prod. & we all had a blast. Patti personally picked who would play "the other woman" & I was thrilled that it was me!
This song definitely had potential to become a massive Pop hit unfortunately, Meatloaf released his version round the same time and Euclid Patti's version.
Thanks for the upload! I only saw the last 15 seconds of this video once when I was channel surfing back in the 80's. I kept hoping that it would be played again, but that never happened so I never saw the whole thing until now. And, by the way, I used to have a crush on Patti Austin back in the 80's, especially with the way she looked on the cover of the album this song was featured on. I still think she looks great.
.... I am SHOCKED they made a video for this song!! ...SHOCKED! (cont.) ...and, I see the 'problems' that Patti had, at the time (85-87), about being a 'BBW' in the pop / R&B scene, (then), in this video; The comedic side is being played up to make Patti look endearingly goofy (..TRUE Patti fans know she's a cutup), but, really...it was to downplay the 'size' issue; she's GORGEOUS regardless, but.... Whitney Houston hit BIG that Year, & Patti didn't 'throw' down, like the OTHER Patti (Labelle), So.... (I do like Patti's, ' helllll NO!!..' response (1:18), when she sees the 'other' Woman wearing HER bathrobe...) ...And, the 'Mae West' play-up, is to indicate a 'take no mess' kinda broad, but....I may get in trouble here....it seems like it's to 'white'-wash' Patti, in an instance, so she can 'cross over,' if she 'looks' a certain way (2:40), and ALSO, given a (white) Lothario Llover....hmmm... ...Then, R&B radio was serviced 'Only A Breath Away' as the follow-up to the MASSIVE Club / R&B hit 'The Heat Of Heat,' in early 1986, and I always wondered WHY it never got a Video...THIS was why; servicing 'Gettin..' to POP radio, at a time when Whitney ('How Will I Know') came out, then, Janet Jackson's 'Control' Album, afterwards....Patti didn't stand a chance.... She could take GREAT solace in the album cover photo (..used here at 1:22), which REMAINS my ALL-TIME favorite Patti photo...it should've been on the FRONT, not the back, of the album! ...they STILL be 'Gettin' Away With Murder'!! >: (
It's odd since she was on Quincy's label. Besides this one and "Rhythm of the Streets," she really didn't have video support. "The Heat of Heat" did very well and could've certainly benefitted from a video. Personally, this is one of my least favorite cuts from the album (I much prefer Randy Crawford's version-vocally and production-wise). The concept here was amusing; but the less-than-thrilling ending of Patti sticking her tongue out, I always found kind of disappointing. I think the clip for "Rhythm of the Streets" did a much better job of showcasing her all-around talent.
Interracial couples weren't as taboo in the 80s as all that. Hell Diana Ross married an entire Swiss mountain climber that year and Tina was dating her soon to be second husband a very white very German younger man. Before that she had affairs with David Bowie, and Mick Jagger. And of course Quincy Jones was with a white South African woman.
Back in the day Patty Austin approved a point that once a cheater is not always a cheater when he gets caught and get in the dog house for his punishment 👍
Patti as Mae West is lovely
Radio slept on this classic

She has trimmed down a whole lot since then.
Right cause on the front cover of the album was a black cat.

You either like or not. I like it.
There’s no reason to dissect the whole damn video second by second. What does that say about you?!

Meat Loaf covered this song a year later.
