This tune is one of my all-time favourites. At my 21st Birthday Party, I played this and the crowd went WILD! Thanks so much for posting this, very appreciative :) DM.
...Education TIME! ...this came out (March?) 1984, and was the FIRST instance of a 'Big Gal' GETTIN' DOWN, in a Music Video! ...Patti was always throwin' down on stage, as others were (Cheryl Lynn, Rochelle Fleming of First Choice, etc.) but they were never filmed in a big budget 'extravaganza', if you will....The Weather Girls (feat. Martha Wash) changed that, with "It's Raining Men", but THAT video had a $29.95 budget.... : ( ...but, THIS VIDEO?! ...Very BIG budget, and Patti, as a hip nightclub owner, was in her ELEMENT, and YES, it's dated a bit, but, LOOK at Miss Patti, here...(1:53)....NO 'Big Gal' was doing THAT in a Video, in 1984!! YES, tastes were changing FAST then...this was released the same time as 'Self Control' from Laura Branigan, & 'Give Me Tonight' by Shannon, which left this song in the dust, but left us a JAMMIN' Video, showing that skinny gals get the attention AT the Club, but the 'Big Gals' OWN it!!! ...GET IT, Miss Patti!! (...oh, and RIP, Phyllis Hyman 2:42!!)
You are sooooooo on point here! Patti Austin is a treasure! She rocked this video and let us know she can move and groove and keep it classy all the way. I adore her and miss her.
@@BrendaLaMour I'm sorry but there's so much going on that i don't see her . Is she the one standing in the doorway at the 1:34 mark when Patti sings liberty comes of age ? But then i see another lady at the 1:48 mark who might be her but i don't know .....Can you time stamp it because i'm curious to see thank you !
When I was a teen this was one of my favorite songs from her. When I saw the video I was like ger down pattie,but the big surprise was the ending. I said that part is not on the album I have. I just love, love it.
Great song, awesome video. And keep in mind music videos were still in their infancy. I think this was 1983 or 1984. I moved to Philadelphia around that time to start my life and I met so many people who claimed they were in this video. It was filmed on the Main Line in Philadelphia. Not crazy about some of choreography, but who the hell am I to complain?
My buddy Michael Gorman danced in this video, dancing behind Patti a lot, romancing the gal in the doorway over Patti's right shoulder at 1:33, to her left outside at 3:38 & on the ground in front of her at 4:39. According to him, he and the other main dancers got bussed down from NYC and were paid $100 for all this work. He said there wasn't really a choreographer, that the director simply said, "I want something like this.." and the dancers just made something up. It's apparent that they did this on the fly as you can see all of them aren't executing the movements exactly the same way. In any event, the video is full of action and makes me get up and move. Fun!
I am in this video. I'm the guy on his knees (with the bald spot) in front of Patti at the very end. Of course I'm dancing throughout as well and I agree with you, not the greatest choreography but it worked. I believe this was 1984 and as dancers we didn't have opinions, we did our jobs. And this was a fun little job. The dancers were from NYC and I was paid $100 I assume the other dancers were as well. As you wrote above, music videos were in their infancy and I was thrilled to be in it and I needed the hundred bucks. I was 30 years old, I'd done a couple of Broadway shows but nothing on film. The director and crew were very excited, they were using a gyroscope camera which was new. I'm pretty sure there were 100 extras and, as I understand it, they worked for free. I was wearing my own pair of fairly new white bucks from Brooks Brothers. I remember I trashed them doing that last section take after take. It was worth it. Patti Austin was/is a doll and a joy to be around.
@@porterp I have to clarify. We had a choreographer (I don't remember her name but I rarely remember my own name.) and she made up the steps. As I remember, she wasn't a dancer which I thought was odd. I probably didn't explain clearly. 🙃
Patti is a natural actress, she really should have had her own show whether talk or music, I remember her guest hosting I think an episode of video soul an needles to say Donnie Simpson who, she is truly a natural, her voice impeccable an really greatful she was apart of Quincy Jones camp, THE DUDE album wouldn't survive without her😚😚😚😚😚😚😚😚😚😚
My mommy and uncle Ricky was in this video. My mommy is the one in the orange flapper dress as Patti is coming down the steps. AWWE Love ❤️ my mom!!! And Uncle Ricky was one of the gangsters walking by in the beginning in the beige colored
And not to mention since it’s in Philly strawberry mansion area we would walk my dogs there about 5 years ago. I just wanted to see my moms face on her memory when we walked by that mansion. ❤️

The just dont make it like this anymore! God Bless Patti.
What a beautiful eye!!!
Yes! Ms. Pattie
The best!!
great video
Narada Michael Walden!
What year did this video come out? early 80's?
Bran Banks early to middle ‘84
Narada Michael Walden. Producer. Patti Austin was fantastic! Only a gay producer can do this sort of entertainment.
Does anybody know the outro song "Videodrome"?
Anyone knows the lyric of this song please
Sure do. But just one line: "Fill me with the rhythm of the street"!
3 'people' have no soul.
yall do know who her godfather is right
What's the lyrics please
At my feet
Bittersweet
Song of the city life
Caught between love and strife
Junkies' dream
School kids scheme
Picturing limousines
Makin' the stairway scene
{Bridge:}
Something's got to be exploding
Shake it loose and set it free
{Chorus 1:}
The rhythm of the street
Let the music carry me
Fill me with the rhythm of the street
Mother cries and the
Young girl flies
Out of her rusty cage
Liberty comes of age
Ten o'clock
On any block
See how the players change
But the song always stays the same
{Bridge}
{Chorus 2:}
The rhythm of the street
Open hearted symphony
Fill me with the rhythm of the street
The rhythm of the street
Let the music carry me
Fill me with the rhythm of the street
{Bridge}
{Chorus 2}
